Grassmann-Gaussian integrals and generalized star products

In quantum scattering on networks there is a non-linear composition rule for on-shell scattering matrices which serves as a replacement for the multiplicative rule of transfer matrices valid in other physical contexts. In this article, we show how this composition rule is obtained using Berezin integration theory with Grassmann variables.

Perturbative test of single parameter scaling for 1D random media

Products of random matrices associated to one-dimensional random media satisfy a central limit theorem assuring convergence to a gaussian centered at the Lyapunov exponent. The hypothesis of single parameter scaling states that its variance is equal to the Lyapunov exponent. We settle discussions about its validity for a wide class of models by proving that, away from anomalies, single parameter scaling holds to lowest order perturbation theory in the disorder strength. However, it is generically violated at higher order. This is explicitely exhibited for the Anderson model.

Stabilization not for certain and the usefulness of bounds

Stabilization is still a somewhat controversial issue concerning its very existence and also the precise conditions for its occurrence. The key quantity to settle these questions is the ionization probability, for which hitherto no computational method exists which is entirely agreed upon. It is therefore very useful to provide various consistency criteria which have to be satisfied by this quantity, whose discussion is the main objective of this contribution. We show how the scaling behaviour of the space leads to a symmetry in the ionization probability, which can be exploited in the mentioned sense. Furthermore, we discuss how upper and lower bounds may be used for the same purpose. Rather than concentrating on particular analytical expressions we obtained elsewhere for these bounds, we focus in our discussion on the general principles of this method. We illustrate the precise working of this procedure, its advantages, shortcomings and range of applicability. We show that besides constraining possible values for the ionization probability these bounds, like the scaling behaviour, also lead to definite statements concerning the physical outcome. The pulse shape properties which have to be satitisfied for the existence of asymptotical stabilization is the vanishing of the total classical momentum transfer and the total classical displacement and not smoothly switched on and off pulses. Alternatively we support our results by general considerations in the Gordon-Volkov perturbation theory and explicit studies of various pulse shapes and potentials including in particular the Coulomb- and the delta potential.

Existence criteria for stabilization from the scaling behaviour of ionization probabilities

We provide a systematic derivation of the scaling behaviour of various quantities and establish in particular the scale invariance of the ionization probability. We discuss the gauge invariance of the scaling properties and the manner in which they can be exploited as consistency check in explicit analytical expressions, in perturbation theory, in the Kramers-Henneberger and Floquet approximation, in upper and lower bound estimates and fully numerical solutions of the time dependent Schroedinger equation. The scaling invariance leads to a differential equation which has to be satisfied by the ionization probability and which yields an alternative criterium for the existence of atomic bound state stabilization.

Two-particle scattering theory for anyons

We consider potential scattering theory of a nonrelativistic quantum mechanical 2-particle system in R^2 with anyon statistics. Sufficient conditions are given which guarantee the existence of wave operators and the unitarity of the S-matrix. As examples the rotationally invariant potential well and the delta-function potential are discussed in detail. In case of a general rotationally invariant potential the angular momentum decomposition leads to a theory of Jost functions. The anyon statistics parameter gives rise to an interpolation for angular momenta analogous to the Regge trajectories for complex angular momenta. Levinson's theorem is adapted to the present context. In particular we find that in case of a zero energy resonance the statistics parameter can be determined from the scattering phase.

Analytical Treatment of Stabilization

We present a summarizing account of a series of investigations whose central topic is to address the question whether atomic stabilization exists in an analytical way. We provide new aspects on several issues of the matter in the theoretical context when the dynamics is described by the Stark Hamiltonian. The main outcome of these studies is that the governing parameters for this phenomenon are the total classical momentum transfer and the total classical displacement. Whenever these two quantities vanish, asymptotically weak stabilization does exist. For all other situations we did not find any evidence for stabilization. We found no evidence that strong stabilization might occur. Our results agree qualitatively with the existing experimental findings.

Ionization Probabilities through ultra-intense Fields in the extreme Limit

We continue our investigation concerning the question of whether atomic bound states begin to stabilize in the ultra-intense field limit. The pulses considered are essentially arbitrary, but we distinguish between three situations. First the total classical momentum transfer is non-vanishing, second not both the total classical momentum transfer and the total classical displacement are vanishing together with the requirement that the potential has a finite number of bound states and third both the total classical momentum transfer and the total classical displacement are vanishing. For the first two cases we rigorously prove, that the ionization probability tends to one when the amplitude of the pulse tends to infinity and the pulse shape remains fixed. In the third case the limit is strictly smaller than one. This case is also related to the high frequency limit considered by Gavrila et al.

On the Influence of Pulse Shapes on Ionization Probability

We investigate analytical expressions for the upper and lower bounds for the ionization probability through ultra-intense shortly pulsed laser radiation. We take several different pulse shapes into account, including in particular those with a smooth adiabatic turn-on and turn-off. For all situations for which our bounds are applicable we do not find any evidence for bound-state stabilization.

On the absence of bound-state stabilization through short ultra-intense fields

We address the question of whether atomic bound states begin to stabilize in the short ultra-intense field limit. We provide a general theory of ionization probability and investigate its gauge invariance. For a wide range of potentials we find an upper and lower bound by non-perturbative methods, which clearly exclude the possibility that the ultra intense field might have a stabilizing effect on the atom. For short pulses we find almost complete ionization as the field strength increases.

Hilbert Spaces for Nonrelativistic and Relativistic "Free" Plektons (Particles with Braid Group Statistics)

Using the theory of fibre bundles, we provide several equivalent intrinsic descriptions for the Hilbert spaces of $n$ ``free'' nonrelativistic and relativistic plektons in two space dimensions. These spaces carry a ray representation of the Galilei group and a unitary representation of the Poincaré group respectively. In the relativistic case we also discuss the situation where the braid group is replaced by the ribbon braid group.

A quantum group version of quantum gauge theories in two dimensions

For the special case of the quantum group $SL_q (2,{\bf C})\ (q= \exp πi/r,\ r\ge 3)$ we present an alternative approach to quantum gauge theories in two dimensions. We exhibit the similarities to Witten's combinatorial approach which is based on ideas of Migdal. The main ingredient is the Turaev-Viro combinatorial construction of topological invariants of closed, compact 3-manifolds and its extension to arbitrary compact 3-manifolds as given by the authors in collaboration with W. Mueller.
