First experimental determination of the $^{40}$Ar($n,2n$)$^{39}$Ar reaction cross section and $^{39}$Ar production in Earth's atmosphere

The cosmogenic $^{39}$Ar(t$_{1/2}$= 268 years) isotope of argon is used for geophysical dating and tracing owing to its appropriate half-life and chemical inertness as a noble gas; $^{39}$Ar serves also in nuclear weapon test monitoring. We measured for the first time the total cross section of the main $^{39}$Ar cosmogenic production reaction in the atmosphere, namely $^{40}$Ar$(n,2n)^{39}$Ar, using 14.8$\pm0.3$ MeV neutrons. The neutrons, produced by a deuterium-tritium generator, impinged on a stainless steel sphere filled with Ar gas highly enriched in the $^{40}$Ar isotope. The reaction yield was measured by atom counting of $^{39}$Ar with noble gas accelerator mass spectrometry and, independently, by decay counting relative to atmospheric argon. A total $^{40}$Ar$(n,2n)^{39}$Ar cross section of 610$\pm100$ mb was determined. This result serves as a benchmark for recent theoretical calculations and evaluations, found to reproduce well the experimental total cross section. We use these energy-dependent theoretical cross sections together with experimental spectra of cosmogenic neutrons at different altitudes to calculate the global average rate of neutron-induced $^{39}$Ar atmospheric production, resulting in $770\pm240$ $^{39}$Ar atoms/cm$^2$/day. The secular equilibrium between the $^{39}$Ar calculated production rate and radioactive decay rate leads to a partial isotopic abundance $^{39}$Ar/Ar$= (5.9\pm 1.8) \times 10^{-16}$, showing that $\approx$73% of atmospheric $^{39}$Ar is produced by cosmogenic neutrons. The $^{40}$Ar($n,2n$)$^{39}$Ar cross section at 14 MeV is also a key parameter for quantifying the anthropogenic contribution to atmospheric $^{39}$Ar produced during the thermonuclear tests of the 1960s. We estimate that anthropogenic $^{39}$Ar accounts for roughly 20% of the present atmospheric inventory.

Cosmic-ray current-driven instabilities -- revisiting environmental conditions

The growth of magneto-hydrodynamic fluctuations relevant to cosmic ray confinement in and near their sources, and the effects of local plasma conditions is revisited. We consider cases where cosmic rays penetrate a medium which may contain a fraction of neutral particles, and explore the possible effects of high-order cosmic-ray anisotropies. An algorithm for calculating the dispersion relation for arbitrary distributions, and anisotropies is presented, and a general solution for power-law cosmic-ray distributions is provided. Implications for the resulting instabilities near to strong Galactic cosmic-ray sources are discussed. We argue that cosmic-ray streaming in weakly ionised plasmas eliminates the need for the existence of an evanescent band in the dispersion relation, a conclusion which may be confirmed by gamma-ray observations. The necessity for additional multi-scale numerical simulations is highlighted, as understanding the non-linear behaviour is crucial.

Collisionless shock acceleration in the corona of an inertial confinement fusion pellet with possible application to ion fast ignition

Two-dimensional Particle-In-Cell simulations are used to explore collisionless shock acceleration in the corona plasma surrounding the compressed core of an inertial confinement fusion pellet. We show that an intense laser pulse interacting with the long scale-length plasma corona is able to launch a collisionless shock around the critical density. The nonlinear wave travels up-ramp through the plasma reflecting and accelerating the background ions. Our results suggest that protons with characteristics suitable for ion fast ignition may be achieved in this way.

Pump-Depletion Dynamics and Saturation of Stimulated Brillouin Scattering in Shock Ignition Relevant Experiments

As an alternative inertial confinement fusion scheme with predicted high energy gain and more robust designs, shock ignition requires a strong converging shock driven by a shaped pulse with a high-intensity spike at the end to ignite a pre-compressed fusion capsule. Understanding nonlinear laser-plasma instabilities in shock ignition conditions is crucial to assess and improve the laser-shock energy coupling. Recent experiments conducted on the OMEGA-EP laser facility have for the first time demonstrated that such instabilities can $\sim$100\% deplete the first 0.5 ns of the high-intensity laser pump. Analysis of the observed laser-generated blast wave suggests that this pump-depletion starts at 0.01--0.02 critical density and progresses to 0.1--0.2 critical density. This pump-depletion is also confirmed by the time-resolved stimulated Raman backscattering spectra. The dynamics of the pump-depletion can be explained by the breaking of ion-acoustic waves in stimulated Brillouin scattering. Such strong pump-depletion would inhibit the collisional laser energy absorption but may benefit the generation of hot electrons with moderate temperatures for electron shock ignition [Shang et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 119 195001 (2017)].

Stellar $^{36,38}$Ar$(n,\gamma)^{37,39}$Ar reactions and their effect on light neutron-rich nuclide synthesis

The $^{36}$Ar$(n,\gamma)^{37}$Ar ($t_{1/2}$ = 35 d) and $^{38}$Ar$(n,\gamma)^{39}$Ar (269 y) reactions were studied for the first time with a quasi-Maxwellian ($kT \sim 47$ keV) neutron flux for Maxwellian Average Cross Section (MACS) measurements at stellar energies. Gas samples were irradiated at the high-intensity Soreq applied research accelerator facility-liquid-lithium target neutron source and the $^{37}$Ar/$^{36}$Ar and $^{39}$Ar/$^{38}$Ar ratios in the activated samples were determined by accelerator mass spectrometry at the ATLAS facility (Argonne National Laboratory). The $^{37}$Ar activity was also measured by low-level counting at the University of Bern. Experimental MACS of $^{36}$Ar and $^{38}$Ar, corrected to the standard 30 keV thermal energy, are 1.9(3) mb and 1.3(2) mb, respectively, differing from the theoretical and evaluated values published to date by up to an order of magnitude. The neutron capture cross sections of $^{36,38}$Ar are relevant to the stellar nucleosynthesis of light neutron-rich nuclides; the two experimental values are shown to affect the calculated mass fraction of nuclides in the region A=36-48 during the weak $s$-process. The new production cross sections have implications also for the use of $^{37}$Ar and $^{39}$Ar as environmental tracers in the atmosphere and hydrosphere.

Design Development for the Beam Dump Facility Target Complex at CERN

CERN has launched a study phase to evaluate the feasibility of a new high-intensity beam dump facility at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron accelerator with the primary goal of exploring Hidden Sector models and searching for Light Dark Matter, but which also offers opportunities for other fixed target flavour physics programs such as rare tau lepton decays and tau neutrino studies. The new facility will require - among other infrastructure - a target complex in which a dense target/dump will be installed, capable of absorbing the entire energy of the beam extracted from the SPS accelerator. In theory, the target/dump could produce very weakly interacting particles, to be investigated by a suite of particle detectors to be located downstream of the target complex. As part of the study, a development design of the target complex has been produced, taking into account the handling and remote handling operations needed through the lifetime of the facility. Two different handling concepts have been studied and both resulting designs are presented.

On the Cosmic Ray Driven Firehose Instability

The role of the non-resonant firehose instability in conditions relevant to the precursors of supernova remnant shocks is considered. Using a second order tensor expansion of the Vlasov-Fokker-Planck equation we illustrate the necessary conditions for the firehose to operate. It is found that for very fast shocks, the diffusion approximation predicts that the linear firehose growth rate is marginally faster than its resonant counterpart. Preliminary hybrid MHD-Vlasov-Fokker-Planck simulation results using young supernova relevant parameters are presented.

A Shorter 146Sm Half-Life Measured and Implications for 146Sm-142Nd Chronology in the Solar System

The extinct p-process nuclide 146Sm serves as an astrophysical and geochemical chronometer through measurements of isotopic anomalies of its alpha-decay daughter 142Nd. Based on analyses of 146Sm/147Sm alpha-activity and atom ratios, we determined the half-life of 146Sm to be 68 \pm 7 (1sigma) million years (Ma), which is shorter than the currently used value of 103 \pm 5 Ma. This half-life value implies a higher initial 146Sm abundance in the early solar system, (146Sm/144Sm_0 = 0.0094\pm0.0005 (2sigma), than previously estimated. Terrestrial, Lunar and Martian planetary silicate mantle differentiation events dated with 146Sm-142Nd converge to a shorter time span and in general to earlier times, due to the combined effect of the new 146Sm half-life and (146Sm/144Sm)_0 values.

The 40Ca(alpha,gamma)44Ti reaction in the energy regime of supernova nucleosynthesis

The 44Ti(t1/2 = 59 y) nuclide, an important signature of supernova nucleosynthesis, has recently been observed as live radioactivity by gamma-ray astronomy from the Cas A remnant. We investigate in the laboratory the major 44Ti production reaction, 40Ca(alpha,gamma)44Ti (E_cm = 0.6-1.2 MeV/u), by direct off- line counting of 44Ti nuclei. The yield, significantly higher than inferred from previous experiments, is analyzed in terms of a statistical model using microscopic nuclear inputs. The associated stellar rate has important astrophysical consequences, increasing the calculated supernova 44Ti yield by a factor ~2 over previous estimates and bringing it closer to Cas A observations.

The stellar (n,gamma) cross section of 62Ni

The 62Ni(n,gamma)63Ni(t_1/2=100+-2 yrs) reaction plays an important role in the control of the flow path of the slow neutron-capture (s-) nucleosynthesis process. We have measured for the first time the total cross section of this reaction for a quasi-Maxwellian (kT = 25 keV) neutron flux. The measurement was performed by fast-neutron activation, combined with accelerator mass spectrometry to detect directly the 63Ni product nuclei. The experimental value of 28.4+-2.8 mb, fairly consistent with a recent theoretical estimate, affects the calculated net yield of 62Ni itself and the whole distribution of nuclei with 62<A <90 produced by the weak s-process in massive stars.

Fundamental Groups of Blow-ups

Many examples of nonpositively curved closed manifolds arise as blow-ups of projective hyperplane arrangements. If the hyperplane arrangement is associated to a finite reflection group W, and the blow-up locus is W-invariant, then the resulting manifold M will admit a cell decomposition whose maximal cells are all combinatorially isomorphic to a given convex polytope P. In other words, M admits a tiling with tile P. The universal covers of such examples yield tilings of R^n whose symmetry groups are generated by involutions but are not, in general, reflection groups. We begin a study of these ``mock reflection groups'', and develop a theory of tilings that includes the examples coming from blow-ups and that generalizes the corresponding theory of reflection tilings. We apply our general theory to classify the examples coming from blow-ups in the case where the tile P is either the permutohedron or the associahedron.

Small Covers of the Dodecahedron and the 120-cell

Let P be the right-angled dodecahedron or 120-cell in hyperbolic space, and let W be the group generated by reflections across codimension-one faces of P. We prove that if Gamma is a torsion-free subgroup of minimal index in W, then the corresponding hyperbolic manifold H^n/Gamma is determined up to homeomorphism by Gamma (modulo symmetries of P).
