Boundary-reducing surgeries and bridge number

Let $M$ be a $3$--dimensional handlebody of genus $g$. This paper gives examples of hyperbolic knots in $M$ with arbitrarily large genus $g$ bridge number which admit Dehn surgeries which are boundary-reducible manifolds.

Bridge numbers of knots in the page of an open book

Given any closed, connected, orientable $3$--manifold and integers $g\geq g(M), D > 0$, we show the existence of knots in $M$ whose genus $g$ bridge number is greater than $D$. These knots lie in a page of an open book decomposition of $M$, and the proof proceeds by examining the action of the map induced by the monodromy on the arc and curve complex of a page. A corollary is that there are Berge knots of arbitrarily large genus one bridge number.

Thin Tree Position

We introduce a method for creating a special type of tree, called a tree position, from a weighted graph. Leaves of the tree correspond to vertices of the original graph, and the tree edges contain information which can be used to partition these vertices. By repeatedly applying reducing operations to the tree position we arrive at a special type of tree position we call thin, and we show that partitions arising from thin tree positions have especially nice properties. The algorithm is based the topological notion of thin position for knots and 3-manifolds and builds on the previously defined idea of a Topological Intrinsic Lexicographic Order (TILO).

Bridge spectra of twisted torus knots

We compute the genus zero bridge numbers and give lower bounds on the genus one bridge numbers for a large class of sufficiently generic hyperbolic twisted torus knots. As a result, the bridge spectra of these knots have two gaps which can be chosen to be arbitrarily large, providing the first known examples of hyperbolic knots exhibiting this property. In addition, we show that there are Berge and Dean knots with arbitrarily large genus one bridge numbers, and as a result, we give solutions to problems of Eudave-Muñoz concerning tunnel number one knots.

PhysicsGP: A Genetic Programming Approach to Event Selection

We present a novel multivariate classification technique based on Genetic Programming. The technique is distinct from Genetic Algorithms and offers several advantages compared to Neural Networks and Support Vector Machines. The technique optimizes a set of human-readable classifiers with respect to some user-defined performance measure. We calculate the Vapnik-Chervonenkis dimension of this class of learning machines and consider a practical example: the search for the Standard Model Higgs Boson at the LHC. The resulting classifier is very fast to evaluate, human-readable, and easily portable. The software may be downloaded at: http://cern.ch/~cranmer/PhysicsGP.html
