Unitarity of the Higher Dimensional Standard Model

We study the unitarity of the standard model (SM) in higher dimensions. We show that the essential features of SM unitarity remain after compactification, and place bounds on the highest Kaluza-Klein (KK) level N_KK and the Higgs mass m_H in the effective four-dimensional (4d) low-energy theory. We demonstrate these general observations by explicitly analyzing the effective 4d KK theory of a compactified 5d SM on S^1/Z_2. The nontrivial energy cancellations in the scattering of longitudinal KK gluons or KK weak bosons, a consequence of the geometric Higgs mechanism, are verified. In the case of the electroweak gauge bosons, the longitudinal KK states also include a small mixture from the KK Higgs excitations. With the analyses before and after compactification, we derive the strongest bounds on N_KK from gauge KK scattering. Applying these bounds to higher-dimensional SUSY GUTs implies that only a small number of KK states can be used to accelerate gauge coupling unification. As a consequence, we show that the GUT scale in the 5d minimal SUSY GUT cannot be lower than about 10^{14} GeV.

Flavor Physics and Fine-Tuning in Theory Space

Recently a new class of composite Higgs models have been developed which give rise to naturally light Higgs bosons without supersymmetry. Based on the chiral symmetries of ``theory space,'' involving replicated gauge groups and appropriate gauge symmetry breaking patterns, these models allow the scale of the underlying strong dynamics giving rise to the composite particles to be as large as of order 10 TeV, without any fine tuning to prevent large corrections to Higgs boson mass(es) of order 100 GeV. In this note we show that the size of flavor violating interactions arising generically from underlying flavor dynamics constrain the scale of the Higgs boson compositeness to be greater than of order 75 TeV, implying that significant fine-tuning is required. Without fine-tuning, the low-energy structure of the composite Higgs model alone is not sufficient to eliminate potential problems with flavor-changing neutral currents or excessive CP violation; solving those problems requires additional information or assumptions about the symmetries of the underlying flavor or strong dynamics. We also consider the weaker, but more model-independent, bounds which arise from limits on weak isospin violation.

Electroweak Symmetry Breaking by Strong Dynamics and the Collider Phenomenology

We discuss the possible signatures in the electroweak symmetry breaking sector by new strong dynamics at future hadron colliders such as the Tevatron upgrade, the LHC and VLHC, and $e^+e^-$ linear colliders. Examples include a heavy Higgs-like scalar resonance, a heavy Technicolor-like vector resonance and pseudo-Goldstone states, non-resonance signatures via enhanced gauge-boson scattering and fermion compositeness.

Unitarity of Deconstructed Five-Dimensional Yang-Mills Theory

The low-energy properties of a compactified five-dimensional gauge theory can be reproduced in a four-dimensional theory with a replicated gauge group and an appropriate gauge symmetry breaking pattern. The lightest vector bosons in these "deconstructed" or "remodeled" theories have masses and couplings approximately equal to those of the Kaluza-Klein tower of massive vector states present in a compactified higher-dimensional gauge theory. We analyze the unitarity of low-energy scattering of the massive vector bosons in a deconstructed theory, and examine the relationship between the scale of unitarity violation and the scale of the underlying chiral symmetry breaking dynamics which breaks the replicated gauge groups. As in the case of compactified five-dimensional gauge theories, low-energy unitarity is ensured through an interlacing cancellation among contributions from the tower of massive vector bosons. We show that the behavior of these scattering amplitudes is manifest without such intricate cancellations in the scattering of the would-be Goldstone bosons of the deconstructed theory. Unlike compactified five-dimensional gauge theories, the amplitude for longitudinal vector boson scattering in deconstructed theories does grow with energy, though this effect is suppressed by 1/(N+1), with N+1 being the number of replicated gauge groups.

Unitarity of Compactified Five Dimensional Yang-Mills Theory

Compactified five dimensional Yang-Mills theory results in an effective four-dimensional theory with a Kaluza-Klein (KK) tower of massive vector bosons. We explicitly demonstrate that the scattering of the massive vector bosons is unitary at tree-level for low energies, and analyze the relationship between the unitarity violation scale in the KK theory and the nonrenormalizability scale in the five dimensional gauge theory. In the compactified theory, low-energy unitarity is ensured through an interlacing cancellation among contributions from the relevant KK levels. Such cancellations can be understood using a Kaluza-Klein equivalence theorem which results from the geometric ``Higgs'' mechanism of compactification. In these theories, the unitarity violation is delayed to energy scales higher than the customary limit through the introduction of additional vector bosons rather than Higgs scalars.

Limits on the Mass of a Composite Higgs Boson: an Update

We discuss the bound on the mass of the Higgs boson arising from precision electroweak measurements in the context of the triviality of the scalar Higgs model. We show that, including possible effects from the underlying nontrivial dynamics, a Higgs boson mass of up to 500 GeV is consistent with current data.

Two-gluon coupling and collider phenomenology of color-octet technirho mesons

It has recently been suggested that gauge invariance forbids the coupling of a massive color-octet vector meson to two gluons. While this is true for operators in an effective Lagrangian of dimension four or less, we demonstrate that dimension six interactions will lead to such couplings. In the case of technicolor, the result is a technirho-gluon-gluon coupling comparable to the naive vector meson dominance estimate, but with a substantial uncertainty. This has implications for several recent studies of technicolor phenomenology.

Limits on a Composite Higgs Boson

Precision electroweak data are generally believed to constrain the Higgs boson mass to lie below approximately 190 GeV at 95% confidence level. The standard Higgs model is, however, trivial and can only be an effective field theory valid below some high energy scale characteristic of the underlying non-trivial physics. Corrections to the custodial isospin violating parameter T arising from interactions at this higher energy scale dramatically enlarge the allowed range of Higgs mass. We perform a fit to precision electroweak data and determine the region in the (m_H, Delta T) plane that is consistent with experimental results. Overlaying the estimated size of corrections to T arising from the underlying dynamics, we find that a Higgs mass up to 500 GeV is allowed. We review two composite Higgs models which can realize the possibility of a phenomenologically acceptable heavy Higgs boson. We comment on the potential of improvements in the measurements of m_t and M_W to improve constraints on composite Higgs models.

Flavor Gauge Bosons at the Tevatron

We investigate collider signals for gauged flavor symmetries that have been proposed in models of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking and fermion mass generation. We consider the limits on the masses of the gauge bosons in these models which can be extracted from Tevatron Run I data in dijet production. Estimates of the Run II search potential are provided. We show that the models also give rise to significant signals in single top production which may be visible at Run II. In particular we study chiral quark family symmetry and SU(9) chiral flavor symmetry. The Run I limits on the gauge bosons in these models lie between (1.5-2) TeV and should increase to about 3 TeV in Run II. Finally, we show that an SU(12) enlargement of the SU(9) model, including leptonic interactions, is constrained by low energy atomic parity violation experiments to lie outside the reach of the Tevatron.

Bounds on Flavor Gauge Bosons from Precision Electroweak Data

Gauged flavor symmetries at low energies have been proposed in models of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking and fermion mass generation. The massive flavor gauge bosons give rise to corrections to precisely measured electroweak quantities. We perform a fit to collider electroweak data and place indirect limits on such new physics. In particular we study several models from the literature: universal coloron; chiral top color; chiral, quark family symmetry; SU(9) and SU(12) chiral, flavor symmetry. The 95% exclusion limits on the mass of the heavy gauge bosons for these models, at their critical coupling for chiral symmetry breaking, typically lie between 1-3 TeV. We discuss the robustness of these bounds with respect to changes in higgs mass, b-quark asymmetry data, the SLD left right asymmetry data, or additional new physics.

Triviality and the Precision Bound on the Higgs Mass

The triviality of the scalar sector of the standard one-doublet Higgs model implies that this model is only an effective low-energy theory valid below some cut-off scale Lambda. For a heavy higgs this scale must be relatively low (10 TeV or less). Additional interactions coming from the underlying theory, and suppressed by the scale Lambda, give rise to model-dependent corrections to precisely measured electroweak quantities. Dimension six operators arising from the underlying physics naturally contribute to the S and T parameters, and their effects should be included in a global fit to the precision data that determines any limit on the Higgs mass. Using dimensional analysis, we estimate the expected size of these corrections in a custodially-symmetric strongly-interacting underlying theory. Taking these operators' coefficients to be of natural size gives sufficiently large contributions to the T parameter to reconcile Higgs masses as large as 400-500 GeV with the precision data.

Top Quark Seesaw Theory of Electroweak Symmetry Breaking

We study electroweak symmetry breaking involving the seesaw mechanism of quark condensation. These models produce a composite Higgs boson involving the left-handed top quark, yet the top mass arises naturally at the observed scale. We describe a schematic model which illustrates the general dynamical ideas. We also consider a generic low-energy effective theory which includes several composite scalars, and we use the effective potential formalism to compute their spectrum. We develop a more detailed model in which certain features of the schematic model are replaced by additional dynamics.

Effective Field Theory of Vacuum Tilting

Simple models of topcolor and topcolor-assisted technicolor rely on a relatively strong U(1) gauge interaction to ``tilt'' the vacuum. This tilting is necessary to produce a top-condensate, thereby naturally obtaining a heavy top-quark, and to avoid producing a bottom-condensate. We identify some peculiarities of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio approximation often used to analyze the topcolor dynamics. We resolve these puzzles by constructing the low-energy effective field theory appropriate to a mass-independent renormalization scheme. We construct the power-counting rules for such an effective theory. By requiring that the Landau pole associated with the U(1) gauge theory be sufficiently above the topcolor gauge boson scale, we derive an upper bound on the strength of the U(1) gauge-coupling evaluated at the topcolor scale. The upper bound on the U(1) coupling implies that these interactions can shift the composite Higgs boson mass-squared by only a few per cent and, therefore, that the topcolor coupling must be adjusted to equal the critical value for chiral symmetry breaking to within a few per cent.

Saturating the Bound on the Scale of Fermion Mass Generation

Recently, Jaeger and Willenbrock have shown that the Appelquist and Chanowitz bound on the scale of top-quark mass generation can formally be saturated in a particular limit of a two-Higgs doublet model. In this note I present an alternate derivation of their result. I perform a coupled channel analysis for f fbar to V_L V_L and V_L V_L to V_L V_L scattering and derive the conditions on the parameters required for f fbar to V_L V_L scattering to be relevant to unitarity. I also show that it is not possible to saturate the bound on fermion mass generation in the two-Higgs model while maintaining tree-level unitarity in Higgs scattering at high energies.
