Inductively-protected Andreev (IPA) spin qubit

The spin of a quasiparticle trapped in a quantum dot Josephson junction forms the basis of an Andreev spin qubit (ASQ): a semiconductor-superconductor device where the interplay between a localized spin degree of freedom and superconductivity leads to a spin-resolved Josephson potential. In this work, we show that shunting an ASQ with a linear inductor enhances its relaxation time by separating the spin-qubit states into distinct potential wells in phase space, nearly eliminating wavefunction overlap. The resulting inductively protected Andreev (IPA) spin qubit is equivalent to two fluxoniums in the heavy regime, one for each spin. Thus, the IPA qubit combines the long coherence times, low-frequency ground-state manifold, and large anharmonicity of a protected superconducting qubit with the operational advantages of a spin degree of freedom.

Optimal Majoranas in Mesoscopic Kitaev Chains

Kitaev chains realized in quantum dots coupled via superconducting segments provide a controllable platform for engineering Majorana zero modes (MZMs). In these systems, subgap states in the hybrid region mediate the effective coupling between quantum dots and determine the emergence of sweet-spots where MZMs are strongly localized. However, existing minimal treatments often oversimplify the mesoscopic hybrid region. We perform a full microscopic treatment of this hybrid segment, capturing the quasiparticle continuum and spin-split Andreev bound states (ABSs), and show that it fundamentally alters the minimal picture. We derive analytical expressions for the renormalized couplings and sweet-spot conditions, establishing a direct link between microscopic chain parameters and Majorana optimization and identifying experimentally relevant regimes for improved device performance. Critically, we find that parity-crossings of the ABS, marking the onset of an odd-parity spin-polarized regime in the segment, identify the optimal operating windows where MZMs are simultaneously well localized with a large gap to excited states.

Biharmonic-Drive Tunable Josephson Diode

The superconducting diode effect has garnered significant interest due to its prospective applications in cryogenic electronics and computing, enabling directional supercurrent transport. This phenomenon has been demonstrated across various superconducting platforms, which typically necessitate unconventional materials with broken spatial symmetries or external magnetic fields, posing scalability and integration challenges. This work introduces an innovative method to realize the superconducting diode effect by disrupting spatiotemporal symmetries in a conventional Josephson junction utilizing a biharmonic alternating-current (AC) drive signal. We achieve wireless modulation of the diode's polarity and efficiency with an antenna. Our findings indicate a diode efficiency reaching the ideal $100%$ over a broad frequency range, with a temperature resilience of up to 800 mK, and efficient AC signal rectification. This versatile and platform-independent superconducting diode signifies a promising component for advancing future superconducting digital electronics, including efficient logic gates, ultrafast switches, and dynamic half-wave supercurrent rectifiers.

Percolative supercurrent in superconductor-ferromagnetic insulator bilayers

We report tunneling spectroscopy and transport measurements in superconducting Al and ferromagnetic-insulator EuS bilayers. The samples display remanent spin-splitting, roughly half the superconducting gap, and supercurrent transport above the average paramagnetic limit. We interpret this behavior as arising from the interplay between two characteristic length scales: the superconducting coherence length, $ξ$, and the magnetic domain size, $d$. By comparing experimental results to a theoretical model, we find $ξ/d \approx 10$. In this regime, spin-averaging across the micromagnetic configuration can locally suppress superconductivity, resulting in percolative supercurrent flow.

Majorana modes in quantum dots coupled via a floating superconducting island

Majorana modes can be engineered in arrays where quantum dots (QDs) are coupled via grounded superconductors, effectively realizing an artificial Kitaev chain. Minimal Kitaev chains, composed by two QDs, can host fully-localized Majorana modes at discrete points in parameter space, known as Majorana sweet spots. Here, we extend previous works by theoretically investigating a setup with two QDs coupled via a floating superconducting island. We study the effects of the charging energy of the island and the properties of the resulting minimal Kitaev chain. We initially employ a minimal perturbative model, valid in the weak QD-island coupling regime, to derive analytic expressions for the Majorana sweet spots and the splitting of the ground state degeneracy as a function of tunable physical parameters. The conclusions from this perturbative approximation are then benchmarked using a microscopic model that explicitly describes the internal degrees of freedom of the island. Our work shows the existence of Majorana sweet spots, even when the island is not tuned at a charge-degeneracy point. In contrast to the Kitaev chains in grounded superconductors, these sweet spots involve a degeneracy between states with a well-defined number of particles.

Supercurrent transport through 1$e$-periodic full-shell Coulomb islands

We experimentally investigate supercurrent through Coulomb islands, where island and leads are fabricated from semiconducting nanowires with fully surrounding superconducting shells. Applying flux along the wire yields a series of destructive Little-Parks lobes with reentrant supercurrent. We find Coulomb blockade with 2$e$ peak spacing in the zeroth lobe and 1$e$ average spacing, with regions of significant even-odd modulation, in the first lobe. Evolution of Coulomb-peak amplitude through the first lobe is consistent with a theoretical model of supercurrent carried predominantly by zero-energy states in the leads and the island.

Supercurrent reversal in ferromagnetic hybrid nanowire Josephson junctions

We report supercurrent transport measurements in hybrid Josephson junctions comprised of semiconducting InAs nanowires with epitaxial ferromagnetic insulator EuS and superconducting Al coatings. The wires display a hysteretic superconducting window close to the coercivity, away from zero external magnetic field. Using a multi-interferometer setup, we measure the current-phase relation of multiple magnetic junctions and find an abrupt switch between $π$ and 0 phases within the superconducting window. We attribute the 0-$π$ transition to the discrete flipping of the EuS domains and provide a qualitative theory showing that a sizable exchange field can polarize the junction and lead to the supercurrent reversal. Both $0$ and $π$ phases can be realized at zero external field by demagnetizing the wire.

Fusion rules in a Majorana single-charge transistor

A demonstration of the theoretically predicted non-abelian properties of Majorana bound states (MBSs) would constitute a definite proof of a topological superconducting phase. Alongside the nontrivial braiding statistics, the fusion rules are fundamental properties of all non-abelian anyons. In this work, we propose and theoretically analyze a way to demonstrate MBS fusion rules in a Majorana single-charge transistor. Our proposal reduces both the number of operations and the device complexity compared to previous designs. Furthermore, we show that the fusion protocol can be adapted to pump a quantized amount of charge in each cycle, providing a straightforward method to detect fusion rules through a DC current measurement. We analyze the protocol numerically and analytically and show that the required operational timescales and expected measurement signals are within experimental capabilities in various superconductor-semiconductor hybrid platforms.

Evidence for spin-polarized bound states in semiconductor-superconductor-ferromagnetic insulator islands

We report Coulomb blockade transport studies of semiconducting InAs nanowires grown with epitaxial superconducting Al and ferromagnetic insulator EuS on overlapping facets. Comparing experiment to a theoretical model, we associate cotunneling features in even-odd bias spectra with spin-polarized Andreev levels. Results are consistent with zero-field spin splitting exceeding the induced superconducting gap. Energies of subgap states are tunable on either side of zero via electrostatic gates.

Transient dynamics of a magnetic impurity coupled to superconducting electrodes: exact numerics versus perturbation theory

Impurities coupled to superconductors offer a controlled platform to understand the interplay between superconductivity, many-body interactions, and non-equilibrium physics. In the equilibrium situation, local interactions at the impurity induce a transition between the spin-singlet to the spin-doublet ground state, resulting in a supercurrent sign reversal ($0-π$ transition). In this work, we apply the exact time-dependent density matrix renormalization group method to simulate the transient dynamics of such superconducting systems. We also use a perturbative approximation to analyze their properties at longer times. These two methods agree for a wide range of parameters. In a phase-biased situation, the system gets trapped in a metastable state characterized by a lower supercurrent compared to the equilibrium case. We show that local Coulomb interactions do not provide an effective relaxation mechanism for the initially trapped quasiparticles. In contrast, other relaxation mechanisms, such as coupling to a third normal lead, make the impurity spin relax for parameter values corresponding to the equilibrium $0$ phase. For parameters corresponding to the equilibrium $π$ phase the impurity converges to a spin-polarized stationary state. Similar qualitative behavior is found for a voltage-biased junction, which provides an effective relaxation mechanism for the trapped quasiparticles in the junction.

Topological superconductivity in semiconductor-superconductor-magnetic insulator heterostructures

Hybrid superconductor-semiconductor heterostructures are promising platforms for realizing topological superconductors and exploring Majorana bound states physics. Motivated by recent experimental progress, we theoretically study how magnetic insulators offer an alternative to the use of external magnetic fields for reaching the topological regime. We consider different setups, where: (1) the magnetic insulator induces an exchange field in the superconductor, which leads to a splitting in the semiconductor by proximity effect, and (2) the magnetic insulator acts as a spin-filter tunnel barrier between the superconductor and the semiconductor. We show that the spin splitting in the superconductor alone cannot induce a topological transition in the semiconductor. To overcome this limitation, we propose to use a spin-filter barrier that enhances the magnetic exchange and provides a mechanism for a topological phase transition. Moreover, the spin-dependent tunneling introduces a strong dependence on the band alignment, which can be crucial in quantum-confined systems. This mechanism opens up a route towards networks of topological wires with fewer constraints on device geometry compared to previous devices that require external magnetic fields.

Signatures of odd-frequency pairing in the Josephson junction current noise

Odd frequency (odd-$ω$) electron pair correlations naturally appear at the interface between BCS superconductors and other materials. The detection of odd-$ω$ pairs, which are necessarily non-local in time, is still an open problem. The main reason is that they do not contribute to static measurements described by time-local correlation functions. Therefore, dynamical measurements, which depend on non-local time correlations, are suitable for detecting these pairs. In this work, we study the signatures of odd-$ω$ pairs in the supercurrent noise through a weak link between two superconductors at different superconducting phases. We show that the finite frequency current noise can be decomposed into three different contributions coming from even frequency (even-$ω$), odd-$ω$ pair amplitudes, and electron-hole correlation functions. Odd-$ω$ pairing, which is inter-lead (between electrons at different sides of the junction), provides a positive contribution to the noise, becoming maximal at a superconducting phase difference of $π$. In contrast, intra-lead even-$ω$ pair amplitude tends to reduce the noise, except for a region close to $π$, controlled by the transmission of the junction.

Time scales for charge-transfer based operations on Majorana systems

In this article we analyze the efficiency of operations based on transferring charge from a quantum dot (QD) to two coupled topological superconductors, which can be used for performing nonabelian operations on Majorana bound states (MBSs). We develop a method which allows us to describe the full time-evolution of the system as the QD energy is manipulated. Using a full counting statistics analysis, we set bounds to the operation time scales. The lower bound depends on the superconducting phase difference due to a partial decoupling of the different MBSs parity sectors, while the upper bound is set by the tunneling of quasiparticles to the MBSs. Using realistic parameters, we find the existence of a regime where the operation can be carried out with a fidelity close to unity. Finally, we propose the use of a two operations protocol to quantify the effect of the dephasing and accumulated dynamical phases, demonstrating their absence for certain superconducting phase differences.

Transient dynamics in interacting nanojunctions within self-consistent perturbation theory

We present an analysis of the transient electronic and transport properties of a nanojunction in the presence of electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions. We introduce a novel numerical approach which allows for an efficient evaluation of the non-equilibrium Green functions in the time domain. Within this approach we implement different self-consistent diagrammatic approximations in order to analyze the system evolution after a sudden connection to the leads and its convergence to the steady state. These approximations are tested by comparison with available numerically exact results, showing good agreement even for the case of large interaction strength. In addition to its methodological advantages, this approach allows us to study several issues of broad current interest like the build up in time of Kondo correlations and the presence or absence of bistability associated with electron-phonon interactions. We find that, in general, correlation effects tend to remove the possible appearance of charge bistability.

Quench dynamics in superconducting nanojunctions: metastability and dynamical Yang-Lee zeros

We study the charge transfer dynamics following the formation of a phase or voltage biased su- perconducting nano-junction using a full counting statistics analysis. We demonstrate that the evolution of the zeros of the generating function allows one to identify the population of different many body states much in the same way as the accumulation of Yang-Lee zeros of the partition function in equilibrium statistical mechanics is connected to phase transitions. We give an exact expression connecting the dynamical zeros to the charge transfer cumulants and discuss when an approximation based on "dominant" zeros is valid. We show that, for generic values of the parameters, the system gets trapped into a metastable state characterized by a non-equilibrium population of the many body states which is dependent on the initial conditions. We study in particular the effect of the switching rates in the dynamics showing that, in contrast to intuition, the deviation from thermal equilibrium increases for the slower rates. In the voltage biased case the steady state is reached independently of the initial conditions. Our method allows us to obtain accurate results for the steady state current and noise in quantitative agreement with steady state methods developed to describe the multiple Andreev reflections regime. Finally, we discuss the system dynamics after a sudden voltage drop showing the possibility of tuning the many body states population by an appropriate choice of the initial voltage, providing a feasible experimental way to access the quench dynamics and control the state of the system.

Andreev bound states formation and quasiparticle trapping in quench dynamics revealed by time-dependent counting statistics

We analyze the quantum quench dynamics in the formation of a phase-biased superconducting nanojunction. We find that in the absence of an external relaxation mechanism and for very general conditions the system gets trapped in a metastable state, corresponding to a non-equilibrium population of the Andreev bound states. The use of the time-dependent Full Counting Statistics (FCS) analysis allows us to extract information on the asymptotic population of even and odd manybody states, demonstrating that a universal behavior, dependent only on the Andreev states energy, is reached in the quantum point contact limit. These results shed light on recent experimental observations on quasiparticle trapping in superconducting atomic contacts.

Transient dynamics and waiting time distribution of molecular junctions in the polaronic regime

We develop a theoretical approach to study the transient dynamics and the time-dependent statistics for the Anderson-Holstein model in the regime of strong electron-phonon coupling. For this purpose we adapt a recently introduced diagrammatic approach to the time domain. The generating function for the time-dependent charge transfer probabilities is evaluated numerically by discretizing the Keldysh contour. The method allows us to analyze the system evolution to the steady state after a sudden connection of the dot to the leads, starting from different initial conditions. Simple analytical results are obtained in the regime of very short times. We study in particular the apparent bistable behavior occurring for strong electron-phonon coupling, small bias voltages and a detuned dot level. The results obtained are in remarkable good agreement with numerically exact results obtained by Quantum Monte Carlo methods. We analyze the waiting time distribution and charge transfer probabilities, showing that only a single electron transfer is responsible for the rich structure found in the short times regime. A universal scaling (independent of the model parameters) is found for the relative amplitude of the higher order current cumulants in the short times regime, starting from an initially empty dot. We finally analyze the convergence to the steady state of the differential conductance and of the differential Fano factor at the inelastic threshold, which exhibits a peculiar oscillatory behavior.

Dressed tunneling approximation for electronic transport through molecular transistors

A theoretical approach for the non-equilibrium transport properties of nanoscale systems coupled to metallic electrodes with strong electron-phonon interactions is presented. It consists in a resummation of the dominant Feynman diagrams from the perturbative expansion in the coupling to the leads. We show that this scheme eliminates the main pathologies found in previous simple analytical approaches for the polaronic regime. The results for the spectral and transport properties are compared with those from several other approaches for a wide range of parameters. The method can be formulated in a simple way to obtain the full counting statistics. Results for the shot and thermal noise are presented.
