Two-Gap Time Reversal Symmetry Breaking Superconductivity in Non-Centrosymmetric LaNiC2

We report a $μ$SR investigation of a non-centrosymmetric superconductor (LaNiC$_2$) in single crystal form. Compared to previous $μ$SR studies of non-centrosymmetric superconducting polycrystalline and powder samples, the unambiguous orientation of single crystals enables a simultaneous determination of the absolute value of the magnetic penetration depth and the vortex core size from measurements that probe the magnetic field distribution in the vortex state. The magnetic field dependence of these quantities unambiguously demonstrates the presence of two nodeless superconducting energy gaps. In addition, we detect weak internal magnetic fields in the superconducting phase, confirming earlier $μ$SR evidence for a time-reversal symmetry breaking superconducting state. Our results suggest that Cooper pairing in LaNiC$_2$ is characterized by the same interorbital equal-spin pairing model introduced to describe the pairing state in the centrosymmetric superconductor LaNiGa$_2$.

Magnetic structure of Cd-doped CeIrIn$_5$

We report the magnetic structure of nominally 10% Cd-doped CeIrIn$_5$, CeIr(In$_{0.9}$Cd$_{0.1}$)$_5$, determined by elastic neutron scattering. Magnetic intensity was observed only at the ordering wave vector $Q_{AF} = (1/2,1/2,1/2)$, commensurate with the crystal lattice. A staggered moment of 0.47(3)$μ_B$ at 1.8 K resides on the Ce ion. The magnetic moments are found to be aligned along the crystallographic $c$ axis. This is further confirmed by magnetic susceptibility data, which suggest the $c$ axis to be the easy magnetic axis. The determined magnetic structure is strikingly different from the incommensurate antiferromagnetic ordering of the closely related compound CeRhIn$_5$, in which the magnetic moments are antiferromagnetically aligned within the tetragonal basal plane.

High-Field Ultrasonic Study of Quadrupole Ordering and Crystal Symmetry Breaking in CeRhIn5

We performed an ultrasonic measurement for the heavy-fermion compound CeRhIn$_5$ to investigate the origin of the field-induced anisotropic phase in high magnetic fields. The transverse elastic constant $C_\mathrm{T} = (C_{11} - C_{12})/2$ and the ultrasonic attenuation coefficient $α_\mathrm{T}$ show clear anomaly at $B^\star = 28.5$ T, which was discussed as the electronic nematic transition point. In addition, $C_\mathrm{T}$ exhibits acoustic de Haas-van Alphen oscillation below 28.5 T. These elastic anomalies around $B^\star$ indicate an electric quadrupole ordering of $O_{x^2-y^2}$ accompanied by $B_\mathrm{1g}$ crystal symmetry breaking and Fermi surface reconstruction due to the quadrupole-strain coupling, which results from itinerant $4f$ electrons and the $p$-$f$ hybridized state.

Quasi-two-dimensional Fermi surfaces with localized $f$ electrons in the layered heavy-fermion compound CePt$_2$In$_7$

We report measurements of the de Haas-van Alphen effect in the layered heavy-fermion compound CePt$_2$In$_7$ in high magnetic fields up to 35 T. Above an angle-dependent threshold field, we observed several de Haas-van Alphen frequencies originating from almost ideally two-dimensional Fermi surfaces. The frequencies are similar to those previously observed to develop only above a much higher field of 45 T, where a clear anomaly was detected and proposed to originate from a change in the electronic structure [M. M. Altarawneh et al., Phys. Rev. B 83, 081103 (2011)]. Our experimental results are compared with band structure calculations performed for both CePt$_2$In$_7$ and LaPt$_2$In$_7$, and the comparison suggests localized $f$ electrons in CePt$_2$In$_7$. This conclusion is further supported by comparing experimentally observed Fermi surfaces in CePt$_2$In$_7$ and PrPt$_2$In$_7$, which are found to be almost identical. The measured effective masses in CePt$_2$In$_7$ are only moderately enhanced above the bare electron mass $m_0$, from 2$m_0$ to 6$m_0$.

Determination of the magnetic structure of CePt$_2$In$_7$ by means of neutron diffraction

The magnetic structure of the heavy fermion antiferromagnet CePt$_2$In$_7$ is determined using neutron diffraction. We find a magnetic wave vector $\mathbf{q}_M = (1/2,1/2,1/2)$, which is temperature independent up to $T_N =$ 5.5 K. A staggered moment of 0.45(1)$μ_B$ at 2 K resides on the Ce ion. The nearest-neighbor moments in the tetragonal basal plane are aligned antiferromagnetically. The moments rotate by 90$^\circ$ from one CeIn$_3$ plane to another along the $c$ axis. A much weaker satellite peak with an incommensurate magnetic wave vector $\mathbf{q}_M = (1/2,1/2,0.47)$ seems to develop at low temperature. However, the experimental data available so far are not sufficient to draw a definitive conclusion about the possible co-existence of commensurate and incommensurate magnetic structures in this material.

Superconductivity and quantum criticality in heavy fermions CeIrSi$_3$ and CeRhSi$_3$

Superconductivity and magnetism are mutually exclusive in most alloys and elements, so it is striking that superconductivity emerges around a magnetic quantum critical point (QCP) in many strongly correlated electron systems (SCES). In the latter case superconductivity is believed to be unconventional and directly influenced by the QCP. However, experimentally unconventional superconductivity has neither been established nor directly been linked to any mechanism of the QCP. Here we report measurements in the heavy-fermion superconductors CeIrSi$_3$ and CeRhSi$_3$. The measurements were performed with a newly developed system, first of its kind, that allows high-resolution studies of the superconducting gap structure under pressure. Superconductivity in CeIrSi$_3$ shows a change from an excitation spectrum with a line-nodal gap to one which is entirely gapful when pressure is close but not yet at the QCP. In contrast, CeRhSi$_3$ does not possess an obvious pressure-tuned QCP and the superconducting phase remains for all accessible pressures with a nodal gap. Combining both results suggests that unconventional behaviours may be connected with the coexisting antiferromagnetic order. This study provides a new viewpoint on the interplay of superconductivity and magnetism in SCES.

Three-dimensional critical phase diagram of the Ising antiferromagnet CeRh$_2$Si$_2$ under intense magnetic field and pressure

Using novel instrumentation to combine extreme conditions of intense pulsed magnetic field up to 60~T and high pressure up to 4~GPa, we have established the three-dimensional (3D) magnetic field - pressure - temperature phase diagram of a pure stoichiometric heavy-fermion antiferromagnet (CeRh$_2$Si$_2$). We find a temperature- and pressure-dependent decoupling of the critical and pseudo-metamagnetic fields, at the borderlines of antiferromagnetism and strongly-correlated paramagnetism. This 3D phase diagram is representative of a class of heavy-fermion Ising antiferromagnets, where long-range magnetic ordering is decoupled from a maximum in the magnetic susceptibility. The combination of extreme conditions enabled us to characterize different quantum phase transitions, where peculiar quantum critical properties are revealed. The interest to couple the effects of magnetic field and pressure on quantum-critical correlated-electron systems is stressed.

Specific heat in high magnetic fields and magnetic phase diagram of CePt$_2$In$_7$

We report specific heat measurements on a high quality single crystal of the heavy-fermion compound CePt$_2$In$_7$ in magnetic fields up to 27 T. The zero-field specific heat data above the Néel temperature, $T_N$, suggest a moderately enhanced value of the electronic specific heat coefficient $γ= 180 \; \rm{mJ/K^2mol}$. For $T<T_N$, the data at zero applied magnetic field are consistent with the existence of an anisotropic spin-density wave opening a gap on almost entire Fermi surface, suggesting extreme two-dimensional electronic and magnetic structures for CePt$_2$In$_7$. $T_N$ is monotonically suppressed by magnetic field applied along the $c$-axis. When field is applied parallel to the $a$-axis, $T_N$ first increases at low field up to about 10 T and then decreases monotonically at higher field. Magnetic phase diagram based on specific heat measurements suggests that a field-induced quantum critical point is likely to occur slightly below 60 T for both principal orientations of the magnetic field.

Possibility of valence-fluctuation mediated superconductivity in Cd-doped CeIrIn$_5$ probed by In-NQR

We report on a pressure-induced evolution of exotic superconductivity and spin correlations in CeIr(In$_{1-x}$Cd$_{x}$)$_5$ by means of In-Nuclear-Quadrupole-Resonance (NQR) studies. Measurements of an NQR spectrum and nuclear-spin-lattice-relaxation rate $1/T_1$ have revealed that antiferromagnetism induced by the Cd-doping emerges locally around Cd dopants, but superconductivity is suddenly induced at $T_c$ = 0.7 and 0.9 K at 2.34 and 2.75 GPa, respectively. The unique superconducting characteristics with a large fraction of the residual density of state at the Fermi level that increases with $T_c$ differ from those for anisotropic superconductivity mediated by antiferromagnetic correlations. By incorporating the pressure dependence of the NQR frequency pointing to the valence change of Ce, we suggest that unconventional superconductivity in the CeIr(In$_{1-x}$Cd$_{x}$)$_5$ system may be mediated by valence fluctuations.

Effect of magnetic field in heavy-fermion compound YbCo$_2$Zn$_{20}$

Inelastic neutron scattering experiments on poly crystalline sample of heavy-fermion compound YbCo$_2$Zn$_{20}$ were carried out in order to obtain microscopic insights on the ground state and its magnetic field response. At zero field at 300 mK, inelastic response consists of two features: quasielastic scattering and a sharp peak at 0.6 meV. With increasing temperature, a broad peak comes up around 2.1 meV, whereas quasielastic response gets broader and the peak at 0.6 meV becomes unclear. By applying magnetic field, the quasielastic response exhibits significant broadening above 1 T, and the peak at 0.6 meV is obscure under fields. The peaks in inelastic spectra and its temperature variation can be ascribed to the suggested crystal-field model of ${Γ_6}$ - ${Γ_8}$ - ${Γ_7}$ with the overall splitting of less than 3 meV. The observed quasielastic response and its rapid broadening with magnetic field indicates that the heavy-electron state arises from the ground state doublets, and are strongly suppressed by external field in YbCo$_2$Zn$_{20}$.

Spin Susceptibility of Noncentrosymmetric Heavy-fermion Superconductor CeIrSi3 under Pressure: 29Si-Knight Shift Study on Single Crystal

We report 29Si-NMR study on a single crystal of the heavy-fermion superconductor CeIrSi3 without an inversion symmetry along the c-axis. The 29Si-Knight shift measurements under pressure have revealed that the spin susceptibility for the ab-plane decreases slightly below Tc, whereas along the c-axis it does not change at all. The result can be accounted for by the spin susceptibility in the superconducting state being dominated by the strong antisymmetric (Rashba-type) spin-orbit interaction that originates from the absence of an inversion center along the c-axis and it being much larger than superconducting condensation energy. This is the first observation which exhibits an anisotropy of the spin susceptibility below Tc in the noncentrosymmetric superconductor dominated by strong Rashba-type spin-orbit interaction.

Sign reversal of field-angle resolved heat capacity oscillations in a heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn$_5$ and $d_{x^2-y^2}$ pairing symmetry

To identify the superconducting gap symmetry in CeCoIn5 (Tc=2.3 K), we performed angle-resolved specific heat (C_ϕ) measurements in a field rotated around the c-axis down to very low temperatures 0.05Tc and detailed theoretical calculations. In a field of 1 T, a sign reversal of the fourfold angular oscillation in C_ϕhas been observed at T ~ 0.1Tc on entering a quasiclassical regime where the maximum of C_ϕcorresponds to the antinodal direction, coinciding with the angle-resolved density of states (ADOS) calculation. The C_ϕbehavior, which exhibits minima along [110] directions, unambiguously allows us to conclude d_{x^2-y^2} symmetry of this system. The ADOS-quasiclassical region is confined to a narrow T and H domain within T/Tc ~ 0.1 and 1.5 T (0.13Hc2).

Magnetic penetration depth and gap symmetry of the noncentrosymmetric superconductors CePt3Si and LaPt3Si

We report on measurements of the temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth of a very high quality single crystal of nonmagnetic superconductor LaPt3Si without inversion symmetry. The results are compared with those previously reported for the isostructural antiferromagnetic superconductor CePt3Si. At low temperatures, the penetration depth follows a BCS exponential behavior that implies an isotropic energy gap in LaPt3Si, in contrast to a linear response that indicates line nodes in CePt3Si. These line nodes have been argued to be protected by symmetry or accidentally generated by parity mixing. The present results provide support for the viewpoint that parity mixing alone does not seem to lead to unconventionality in CePt3Si and that it requires the antiferromagnetic order to be included.

Evolution of the Fermi surface of BaFe_2(As_{1-x}P_x)_2 on entering the superconducting dome

Using the de Haas-van Alphen effect we have measured the evolution of the Fermi surface of BaFe_2(As_{1-x}P_x)_2 as function of isoelectric substitution (As/P) for 0.41<x<1 (T_c up to 25 K). We find that the volume of electron and hole Fermi surfaces shrink linearly with decreasing x. This shrinking is accompanied by a strong increase in the quasiparticle effective mass as x is tuned toward the maximum T_c. It is likely that these trends originate from the many-body interaction which give rise to superconductivity, rather than the underlying one-electron bandstructure.

Novel phase diagram for antiferromagnetism and superconductivity in pressure-induced heavy-fermion superconductor Ce$_2$RhIn$_8$ probed by In-NQR

We present a novel phase diagram for the antiferromagnetism and superconductivity in Ce$_2$RhIn$_8$ probed by In-NQR studies under pressure ($P$). The quasi-2D character of antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations in the paramagnetic state at $P$ = 0 evolves into a 3D character because of the suppression of antiferromagnetic order for $P > P_{\rm QCP}\sim$ 1.36 GPa (QCP: antiferromagnetic quantum critical point). Nuclear-spin-lattice-relaxation rate $1/T_1$ measurements revealed that the superconducting order occurs in the $P$ range 1.36 -- 1.84 GPa, with maximum $T_c\sim$ 0.9 K around $P_{\rm QCP}\sim$ 1.36 GPa.

Strong Coupling between Antiferromagnetic and Superconducting Order Parameters in CeRhIn$_5$ Studied by In-NQR Spectroscopy

We report on a novel pressure ($P$)-induced evolution of magnetism and superconductivity (SC) in a helical magnet CeRhIn$_5$ with an incommensurate wave vector $Q_i=({1/2},{1/2},0.297)$ through the $^{115}$In nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements under $P$. Systematic measurements of the $^{115}$In-NQR spectrum reveal that the commensurate antiferromagnetism (AFM) with $Q_c=({1/2},{1/2},{1/2})$ is realized above $P_m \sim$ 1.7 GPa. An important finding is that the size of SC gap and $T_c$ increase as the magnitude of the AFM moment decreases in the $P$ region, where SC uniformly coexists with the commensurate AFM. This result provides evidence of strong coupling between the commensurate AFM order parameter (OP) and SC OP.

Point-contact spectroscopy of the heavy-fermion superconductor CePt$_{3}$Si

Differential resistance spectra (${\rm d}V/{\rm d}I-V$ characteristics) have been measured for point-contacts between the heavy-fermion superconductor (HFS) CePt$_{3}$Si and a normal metal. Some contacts show a peak at V=0 that is characteristic of HFS coexisting with a magnetic order such as UPd$_2$Al$_3$, UNi$_2$Al$_3$ and URu$_2$Si$_2$. The evolution of the peak occurs well above the antiferromagnetic transition temperature $T_{\rm N}\sim$ 2.2 K, so that the direct relationship with the magnetic transition is questionable. The half-width of the peak seems to reflect the crystal field splitting or the spin-wave gap as observed for the above-mentioned HFSs, possibly suggesting that some common scattering process induces the zero-bias peaks in these materials.

Multiband Superconductivity in Heavy Fermion Compound CePt3Si without Inversion Symmetry: An NMR Study on a High-Quality Single Crystal

We report on novel superconducting characteristics of the heavy fermion (HF) superconductor CePt3Si without inversion symmetry through 195Pt-NMR study on a single crystal with T_c= 0.46 K that is lower than T_c= 0.75 K for polycrystals. We show that the intrinsic superconducting characteristics inherent to CePt3Si can be understood in terms of the unconventional strong-coupling state with a line-node gap below T_c= 0.46 K. The mystery about the sample dependence of T_c is explained by the fact that more or less polycrystals and single crystals inevitably contain some disordered domains, which exhibit a conventional BCS s-wave superconductivity (SC) below 0.8 K. In contrast, the Neel temperature T_N= 2.2 K is present regardless of the quality of samples, revealing that the Fermi surface responsible for SC differ from that for the antiferromagnetic order. These unusual characteristics of CePt3Si can be also described by a multiband model; in the homogeneous domains, the coherent HF bands are responsible for the unconventional SC, whereas in the disordered domains the conduction bands existing commonly in LaPt3Si may be responsible for the conventional s-wave SC. We remark that some impurity scatterings in the disordered domains break up the 4f-electrons-derived coherent bands but not others. In this context, the small peak in 1/T_1 just below T_c reported in the previous paper (Yogi et al, 2004) is not due to a two-component order parameter composed of spin-singlet and spin-triplet Cooper pairing states, but due to the contamination of the disorder domains which are in the s-wave SC state.
