Bounds on Spreads of Matrices related to Fourth Central Moment. II

We derive some inequalities involving first four central moments of discrete and continuous distributions. Bounds for the eigenvalues and spread of a matrix are obtained when all its eigenvalues are real. Likewise, we discuss bounds for the roots and span of a polynomial equation.

The Expanded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope

With 30 antennas and a maximum baseline length of 25 km, the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) is the premier low-frequency radio interferometer today. We have carried out a study of possible expansions of the GMRT, via adding new antennas and installing focal plane arrays (FPAs), to improve its point-source sensitivity, surface brightness sensitivity, angular resolution, field of view, and U-V coverage. We have carried out array configuration studies, aimed at minimizing the number of new GMRT antennas required to obtain a well-behaved synthesized beam over a wide range of angular resolutions for full-synthesis observations. This was done via two approaches, tomographic projection and random sampling, to identify the optimal locations for the new antennas. We report results for the optimal locations of the antennas of an expanded array (the "EGMRT"), consisting of the existing 30 GMRT antennas, 30 new antennas at short distances, $\leq 2.5$ km from the array centre, and 26 new antennas at long distances, $\approx 5-25$ km from the array centre. The collecting area and the field of view of the proposed EGMRT array would be larger by factors of, respectively, $\approx 3$ and $\approx 30$, than those of the GMRT. Indeed, the EGMRT continuum sensitivity and survey speed with 550-850 MHz FPAs installed on the 45 antennas within a distance of $\approx 2.5$ km of the array centre would be far better than those of any existing interferometer, and comparable to the sensitivity and survey speed of Phase-1 of the Square Kilometre Array.

Exploring the stellar properties of M dwarfs with high-resolution spectroscopy from the optical to the near-infrared

Context. Being the most numerous and oldest stars in the galaxy, M dwarfs are objects of great interest for exoplanet searches. The presence of molecules in their atmosphere complicates our understanding of their atmospheric properties. But great advances have recently been made in the modeling of M dwarfs due to the revision of solar abundances. Aims. We aim to determine stellar parameters of M dwarfs using high resolution spectra (R = 90 000) simultaneously in the visible and the near-infrared. The high resolution spectra and broad wavelength coverage provide an unique opportunity to understand the onset of dust and cloud formation at cool temperatures. Furthermore, this study will help in understanding the physical processes which occur in a cool atmospheres, particularly, the redistribution of energy from the optical to the near-infrared. Methods. The stellar parameters of M dwarfs in our sample have been determined by comparing the high resolution spectra both in the optical and in the near-infrared simultaneously observed by CARMENES with the synthetic spectra obtained from the BT-Settl model atmosphere. The detailed spectral synthesis of these observed spectra both in the optical and in the near-infrared helps to understand the missing continuum opacity. Results. For the first time, we derive fundamental stellar parameters of M dwarfs using the high resolution optical and near-infrared spectra simultaneously. We determine Teff , log g and [M/H] for 292 M dwarfs of spectral type M0 to M9, where the formation of dust and clouds are important. The derived Teff for the sample ranges from 2300 to 4000 K, values of log g ranges from 4.5 geq log g leq 5.5 and the resulting metallicity ranges from -0.5 geq [M/H] leq +0.5. We have also explored the possible differences in Teff , log g and [M/H] by comparing them with other studies of the same sample of M dwarfs.

Analysis of 3D plasma motions in a chromospheric jet formed due to magnetic reconnection

Within the framework of resistive MHD, implementing the C7 equilibrium atmosphere model and a 3D potential magnetic field realistic configuration, we simulate the formation of a plasm jet with the morphology, upward velocity up to 130 km/s and timescale formation between 60 and 90 s after beginning of simulation, similar to those expected for Type II spicules. Initial results of this simulation were published in Paper (e.g., González-Avilés et al. 2018) and present paper is devoted to the analysis of transverse displacements and rotational type motion of the jet. Our results suggest that 3D magnetic reconnection may be responsible for the formation of the jet in Paper (González-Avilés et al. 2018). In this paper, by calculating times series of the velocity components $v_x$ and $v_y$ in different points near to the jet for various heights we find transverse oscillations in agreement with spicule observations. We also obtain a time-distance plot of the temperature in a cross-cut at the plane $x=$0.1 Mm and find significant transverse displacements of the jet. By analyzing temperature isosurfaces of $10^{4}$ K with the distribution of $v_x$, we find that if the line-of-sight (LOS) is approximately perpendicular to the jet axis then there is both motion towards and away from the observer across the width of the jet. This red-blue shift pattern of the jet is caused by rotational motion, initially clockwise and anti-clockwise afterwards, which could be interpreted as torsional motion. From a nearly vertical perspective of the jet the LOS velocity component shows a central blue-shift region surrounded by red-shifted plasma.

First search for short-baseline neutrino oscillations at HFIR with PROSPECT

This Letter reports the first scientific results from the observation of antineutrinos emitted by fission products of $^{235}$U at the High Flux Isotope Reactor. PROSPECT, the Precision Reactor Oscillation and Spectrum Experiment, consists of a segmented 4 ton $^6$Li-doped liquid scintillator detector covering a baseline range of 7-9 m from the reactor and operating under less than 1 meter water equivalent overburden. Data collected during 33 live-days of reactor operation at a nominal power of 85 MW yields a detection of 25461 $\pm$ 283 (stat.) inverse beta decays. Observation of reactor antineutrinos can be achieved in PROSPECT at 5$σ$ statistical significance within two hours of on-surface reactor-on data-taking. A reactor-model independent analysis of the inverse beta decay prompt energy spectrum as a function of baseline constrains significant portions of the previously allowed sterile neutrino oscillation parameter space at 95% confidence level and disfavors the best fit of the Reactor Antineutrino Anomaly at 2.2$σ$ confidence level.

Discovery of OH absorption from a galaxy at z~0.05: implications for large surveys with SKA pathfinders

We present the first detection of OH absorption in diffuse gas at $z>0$, along with another eight stringent limits on OH column densities for cold atomic gas in galaxies at $0 $13.6) to be $n_{\rm OH}$ = $0.008^{+0.018}_{-0.008}$ at $z\sim0.1$. Based on this we expect to detect 10$^{+20}_{-10}$ such OH absorbers from the MeerKAT Absorption Line Survey. Using HI 21-cm and OH 1667 MHz absorption lines detected towards Q0248+430, we estimate ($ΔF/F$) = (5.2$\pm$4.5)$\times 10^{-6}$, where $F \equiv g_p (α^2/μ)^{1.57}$, $α$ $-$ the fine structure constant, $μ$ $-$ the electron-proton mass ratio and $g_p$ $-$ the proton gyromagnetic ratio. This corresponds to $Δα/α$($z=0.0519$) = (1.7 $\pm$ 1.4)$\times 10^{-6}$, which is among the stringent constraints on the fractional variation of $α$.

Description of Nuclei with Magic Number Z(N) = 6

Encouraged with the evidence for Z = 6 magic number in neutron-rich carbon isotopes, we have performed relativistic mean-field plus BCS calculations to investigate ground state properties of entire chains of isotopes(isotones) with Z(N) = 6 including even and odd mass nuclei. Our calculations include deformation, binding energy, separation energy, single particle energy, rms radii along with charge and neutron density profile etc., and are found in an excellent match with latest experimental results demonstrating Z = 6 as a strong magic number. N = 6 is also found to own similar kind of strong magic character.

Model Predictive BESS Control for Demand Charge Management and PV-Utilization Improvement

Adoption of battery energy storage systems for behind-the-meters application offers valuable benefits for demand charge management as well as increasing PV-utilization. The key point is that while the benefit/cost ratio for a single application may not be favorable for economic benefits of storage systems, stacked services can provide multiple revenue streams for the same investment. Under this framework, we propose a model predictive controller to reduce demand charge cost and enhance PV-utilization level simultaneously. Different load patterns have been considered in this study and results are compared to the conventional rule-based controller. The results verified that the proposed controller provides satisfactory performance by improving the PV-utilization rate between 60% to 80% without significant changes in demand charge (DC) saving. Furthermore, our results suggest that batteries can be used for stacking multiple services to improve their benefits. Quantitative analysis for PV-utilization as a function of battery size and prediction time window has also been carried out.

Means Moments and Newton's Inequalities

It is shown that Newton's inequalities and the related Maclaurin's inequalities provide several refinements of the fundamental Arithmetic mean - Geometric mean - Harmonic mean inequality in terms of the means and variance of positive real numbers. We also obtain some inequalities involving third and fourth central moments of real numbers.

Constraints on Large Extra Dimensions from the MINOS Experiment

We report new constraints on the size of large extra dimensions from data collected by the MINOS experiment between 2005 and 2012. Our analysis employs a model in which sterile neutrinos arise as Kaluza-Klein states in large extra dimensions and thus modify the neutrino oscillation probabilities due to mixing between active and sterile neutrino states. Using Fermilab's NuMI beam exposure of $10.56 \times 10^{20}$ protons-on-target, we combine muon neutrino charged current and neutral current data sets from the Near and Far Detectors and observe no evidence for deviations from standard three-flavor neutrino oscillations. The ratios of reconstructed energy spectra in the two detectors constrain the size of large extra dimensions to be smaller than $0.45\,μ\text{m}$ at 90% C.L. in the limit of a vanishing lightest active neutrino mass. Stronger limits are obtained for non-vanishing masses.

A search for flavor-changing non-standard neutrino interactions using $ν_{e}$ appearance in MINOS

We report new constraints on flavor-changing non-standard neutrino interactions from the MINOS long-baseline experiment using $ν_{e}$ and $\barν_{e}$ appearance candidate events from predominantly $ν_μ$ and $\barν_μ$ beams. We used a statistical selection algorithm to separate $ν_{e}$ candidates from background events, enabling an analysis of the combined MINOS neutrino and antineutrino data. We observe no deviations from standard neutrino mixing, and thus place constraints on the non-standard interaction matter effect, $|\varepsilon_{eτ}|$, and phase, $(δ_{CP}+δ_{eτ})$, using a thirty-bin likelihood fit.

Search for time-independent Lorentz violation using muon neutrino to muon antineutrino transitions in MINOS

Data from the MINOS experiment has been used to search for mixing between muon neutrinos and muon antineutrinos using a time-independent Lorentz-violating formalism derived from the Standard-Model Extension (SME). MINOS is uniquely capable of searching for muon neutrino-antineutrino mixing given its long baseline and ability to distinguish between neutrinos and antineutrinos on an event-by-event basis. Neutrino and antineutrino interactions were observed in the MINOS Near and Far Detectors from an exposure of 10.56$\times10^{20}$ protons-on-target from the NuMI neutrino-optimized beam. No evidence was found for such transitions and new, highly stringent limits were placed on the SME coefficients governing them. We place the first limits on the SME parameters $(c_{L})^{TT}_{μμ} $ and $(c_{L})^{TT}_{ττ}$ at $-8.4\times10^{-23} < (c_{L})^{TT}_{μμ} < 8.0\times10^{-23}$ and $-8.0\times10^{-23} < (c_{L})^{TT}_{ττ} < 8.4\times10^{-23}$, and the world's best limits on the $\tilde{g}^{ZT}_{μ\overlineμ}$ and $\tilde{g}^{ZT}_{τ\overlineτ}$ parameters at $|\tilde{g}^{ZT}_{μ\overlineμ}| < 3.3\times 10^{-23}$ and $|\tilde{g}^{ZT}_{τ\overlineτ}| < 3.3\times 10^{-23}$, all limits quoted at $3σ$.

Measurement of single $π^0$ production by coherent neutral-current $ν$ Fe interactions in the MINOS Near Detector

Forward single $π^0$ production by coherent neutral-current interactions, $ν\mathcal{A} \to ν\mathcal{A} π^0$, is investigated using a 2.8$\times 10^{20}$ protons-on-target exposure of the MINOS Near Detector. For single-shower topologies, the event distribution in production angle exhibits a clear excess above the estimated background at very forward angles for visible energy in the range~1-8 GeV. Cross sections are obtained for the detector medium comprised of 80% iron and 20% carbon nuclei with $\langle \mathcal{A} \rangle = 48$, the highest-$\langle \mathcal{A} \rangle$ target used to date in the study of this coherent reaction. The total cross section for coherent neutral-current single-$π^0$ production initiated by the $ν_μ$ flux of the NuMI low-energy beam with mean (mode) $E_ν$ of 4.9 GeV (3.0 GeV), is $77.6\pm5.0\,(\text{stat}) ^{+15.0}_{-16.8}\,(\text{syst})\times10^{-40}\,\text{cm}^2~\text{per nucleus}$. The results are in good agreement with predictions of the Berger-Sehgal model.

Search for Sterile Neutrinos Mixing with Muon Neutrinos in MINOS

We report results of a search for oscillations involving a light sterile neutrino over distances of 1.04 and $735\,\mathrm{km}$ in a $ν_μ$-dominated beam with a peak energy of $3\,\mathrm{GeV}$. The data, from an exposure of $10.56\times 10^{20}\,\textrm{protons on target}$, are analyzed using a phenomenological model with one sterile neutrino. We constrain the mixing parameters $θ_{24}$ and $Δm^{2}_{41}$ and set limits on parameters of the four-dimensional Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata matrix, $|U_{μ4}|^{2}$ and $|U_{τ4}|^{2}$, under the assumption that mixing between $ν_{e}$ and $ν_{s}$ is negligible ($|U_{e4}|^{2}=0$). No evidence for $ν_μ \to ν_{s}$ transitions is found and we set a world-leading limit on $θ_{24}$ for values of $Δm^{2}_{41} \lesssim 1\,\mathrm{eV}^{2}$.

Charged compact stellar model in Finch-Skea spacetime

In this paper a compact charged stellar model in the Finch and Skea background spacetime [{\it Class. Quantum Gravity} {\bf6}, 467 (1989)] is presented. The model has been developed by assuming a particular charge distribution within the stellar interior. The model is well behaved and can describe a large class of compact stars. Physical features of the model are studied and in particular we show how the presence of charge can have a non-negligible impact on the mass-radius ($M-R$) relationship of such class of stars.

Measurement of the Multiple-Muon Charge Ratio in the MINOS Far Detector

The charge ratio, $R_μ= N_{μ^+}/N_{μ^-}$, for cosmogenic multiple-muon events observed at an under- ground depth of 2070 mwe has been measured using the magnetized MINOS Far Detector. The multiple-muon events, recorded nearly continuously from August 2003 until April 2012, comprise two independent data sets imaged with opposite magnetic field polarities, the comparison of which allows the systematic uncertainties of the measurement to be minimized. The multiple-muon charge ratio is determined to be $R_μ= 1.104 \pm 0.006 {\rm \,(stat.)} ^{+0.009}_{-0.010} {\rm \,(syst.)} $. This measurement complements previous determinations of single-muon and multiple-muon charge ratios at underground sites and serves to constrain models of cosmic ray interactions at TeV energies.
