A relativistic description of the A(pi+,K+)_ΛA reaction

We investigate the A$(π^+,K^+){_Λ}$A reaction within a covariant model. We consider those amplitudes which are described by creation, propagation and decay into relevant channel of $N^*$(1650), $N^*$(1710), and $N^*$(1720) intermediate baryonic resonance states in the initial collision of the incoming pion with one of the target nucleons. The bound state nucleon and hyperon wave functions are obtained by solving the Dirac equation with appropriate scalar and vector potentials. Expressions for the reaction amplitudes are derived taking continuum particle wave function in the plane wave approximation. Numerical calculations are presented for reactions on $^{12}$C, $^{40}$Ca, $^{51}$V and $^{89}$Y target nuclei. The predictions of our model are in reasonable agreement with the available experimental data.

Dilepton production in nucleon-nucleon collisions around 1 GeV/nucleon: a theoretical update

We present a fully relativistic and gauge invariant framework for calculating the cross sections of dilepton production in nucleon-nucleon (NN) collisions which is based on the meson-exchange approximation for the NN scattering amplitudes. Predictions of our model are compared with those of other covariant models that have been used to describe this reaction. We discuss the comparison of our calculations with the old DLS and the recent HADES data.

The associated photoproduction of K+ meson off proton within a coupled-channels K-matrix approach

We investigate the p(gamma,K+)Lambda and p(gamma,K+)Sigma^0 reactions within a coupled-channels effective-Lagrangian method which is based on the K-matrix approach. The two-body final channels included are pi-N, eta-N, phi-N, rho-N, gamma-N, K-Lambda, and K-Sigma. Non-resonant meson-baryon interactions are included in the model via nucleon intermediate states in the s- and u-channels and meson exchanges in the t-channel amplitude and the u-channel resonances. The nucleon resonances S11 (1535), S11 (1650), S31 (1620), P11 (1440), P11 (1710), P13 (1720), P33 (1232), P33 (1600), D13 (1520), D13 (1700), and D33 (1700) are included explicitly in the calculations. With a single parameter set which was derived earlier from our analysis of the eta meson photoproduction, the model describes well all the available cross section and polarization data of the SAPHIR collaboration for the two investigated channels. The description of the data of the CLAS collaboration, however, is not of the same quality. In contrast to some previous studies, we do not find any compelling need for including a D13 state with mass of around 2.0 GeV in order to reproduce the data for the p(gamma,K+)Lambda reaction at photon energies corresponding to the invariant mass around 1.9 GeV.

Photoproduction of hypernuclei within the quark-meson coupling model

We study the photoproduction of the ^12{_Lambda}B hypernucleus within a fully covariant effective Lagrangian based model, employing Lambda bound state spinors derived from the latest quark-meson coupling model. The kaon production vertex is described via creation, propagation and decay of N*(1650), N*(1710), and N*(1720) intermediate baryonic resonant states in the initial collision of the photon with a target proton in the incident channel. The parameters of the resonance vertices are fixed by describing the total and differential cross section data on the elementary gamma (p, K+) Lambda reaction in the energy regime relevant to the hypernuclear production. It is found that the hypernuclear production cross sections calculated with the quark model based hyperon bound state spinors differ significantly from those obtained with the phenomenological Dirac single particle wave functions.

Dilepton production in nucleon-nucleon collisions reexamined

We present a fully relativistic and gauge invariant framework for calculating the cross sections of dilepton production in nucleon-nucleon ($NN$) collisions which is based on the meson-exchange approximation for the $NN$ scattering amplitudes. Predictions of our model are compared with those of other covariant models that have been used earlier to describe this reaction. Our results are also compared with those of the semiclassical models which are employed to get the input elementary cross sections in the transport model calculations of the dilepton production in nucleus-nucleus collisions. It is found that cross sections obtained within the semiclassical and quantum mechanical models differ noticeably from each other.

Photoproduction of eta meson within a coupled-channels K-matrix approach

We investigate photoproduction of eta mesons off protons and neutrons within a coupled-channels effective-Lagrangian method which is based on the K-matrix approach. The two-body final channels included are pi-N, eta-N, phi-N, rho-N, gamma-N, K-Lambda, and K-Sigma. Non-resonant meson-baryon interactions are included in the model via nucleon intermediate states in the s- and u-channels, meson exchanges in the t-channel amplitude and the u-channel resonances. The nucleon resonances S_{11}(1535), S_{11}(1650), S_{31}(1620), P_{11}(1440), P_{11}(1710), P_{13}(1720), P_{33}(1232), P_{33}(1600), D_{13}(1520), D_{13}(1700), and D_{33}(1700) are included explicitly in calculations. Our model describes simultaneously the available data as well on total and differential cross sections as on beam and target asymmetries. This holds for the p(gamma, eta)p reaction for photon energies ranging from very close to threshold to up to 3 GeV. The polarization observables show strong sensitivity to resonances that otherwise contribute only weakly to the total cross section. It is found that the pronounced bump-like structure seen in the excitation function of the n(gamma, eta)n cross section at gamma energies around 1 GeV, can be explained by the interference effects of S_{11}, P_{11} and P_{13} resonance contributions.

Coulomb dissociation of 9Li and the rate of the 8Li(n,g)9Li reaction

We calculate the Coulomb dissociation of 9Li on Pb and U targets at 28.5 MeV/A beam energy within a finite range distorted wave Born approximation formalism of the breakup reactions. Invoking the principle of detailed balance, these cross sections are used to determine the excitation function and subsequently the rate of the radiative capture reaction 8Li(n,g)9Li at astrophysical energies. Our method is free from the uncertainties associated with the multipole strength distributions of the 9Li nucleus. The rate of this reaction at a temperature of 10^9K is found to be about 2900 cm^3 mole^{-1} s^{-1}.

Hypernuclear production by ($γ, K^+$) reaction within a relativistic model

Within a fully covariant model based on an effective Lagrangian picture, we investigate the hypernuclear production in photon-nucleus interaction on $ ^{16}$O target. The explicit kaon production vertex is described via creation, propagation and decay into relevant channel of $N^*$(1650), $N^*$(1710), and $N^*$(1720) intermediate baryonic resonance states in the initial interaction of the incident photon with one of the target protons. Bound state nucleon and hyperon wave functions are obtained by solving the Dirac equation. Using vertex parameters determined in the previous studies, contributions of the $N^*$(1710) baryonic resonance dominate the total production cross sections which are found to peak at photon energies below 1 GeV. The results show that photoproduction is the most appropriate means for studying the unnatural parity hypernuclear states, thus accessing the spin dependence of the hyperon-nucleon interaction.

Production of hypernuclei with hadronic and electromagnetic probes

We present an overview of a fully covariant formulation of describing the hypernuclear production with hadronic and electromagnetic probes. This theory is based on an effective Lagrangian picture and it focuses on production amplitudes that are described via creation, propagation and decay into relevant channel of N*(1650), N*(1710) and N*(1720) intermediate baryonic resonance states in the initial collision of the projectile with one of the target nucleons. The bound state nucleon and hyperon wave functions are obtained by solving the Dirac equation with appropriate scalar and vector potentials. Specific examples are discussed for reactions which are of interest to current and future experiments on the hypernuclear production.

Eta meson production in nucleon-nucleon collisions within an effective Lagrangian model

We investigate the pp --> pp eta and pn --> pn eta reactions within an effective Lagrangian model for laboratory kinetic energies ranging from very close to eta meson production threshold to about 10 GeV. Production amplitudes include contributions from the mechanism of excitation, propagation and decay of N*(1535), N*(1650), and N*(1710) baryonic resonances. The initial interaction between two incoming nucleons is modeled by the exchange of pi, rho, omega and sigma mesons where the vertex parameters are taken to be the same as those used in the previous applications of this model. Parameters of the resonance vertices also have been taken from our earlier studies wherever applicable. Calculations have been done for total as well as differential eta production cross sections. To describe the data for energies closer to the production threshold final state interactions among the out-going particles have been included by means of a generalized Watson-Migdal method. Terms corresponding to the excitation of N*(1535) resonance and pion exchange process dominate the cross sections. With a single set of vertex parameters our model is able to describe the available data well on total cross sections for beam energies ranging from close to threshold to upto 10 GeV.

A fully relativistic description of Hypernuclear production in proton- and pion-Nucleus Collisions

Exclusive A(p,K^+){_Λ}B and A(π,K^+){_Λ}B^\prime reactions leading to two body final states, have been investigated in a fully covariant model based on an effective Lagrangian picture. The explicit kaon production vertex is described via creation, propagation and decay into relevant channel of N*(1650), N*(1710) and N*(1720) intermediate baryonic resonance states, in the initial collision of the projectile with one of the target nucleons. The bound state wave functions are obtained by solving the Dirac equation with appropriate scalar and vector potentials. The calculated cross sections show strong sensitivity to the final hypernuclear state excited in the reaction. Cross sections of 1 - 2 nb/sr are obtained at peak positions of favored transitions in case of the A(p,K^+){_Λ}B reaction on heavier targets.

Astrophysical S_{17}(0) factor from a measurement of d(7Be,8B)n reaction at E_{c.m.} = 4.5 MeV

Angular distribution measurements of $^2$H($^7$Be,$^7$Be)$^2$H and $^2$H($^7$Be,$^8$B)$n$ reactions at $E_{c.m.}\sim$~4.5 MeV were performed to extract the astrophysical $S_{17}(0)$ factor using the asymptotic normalization coefficient (ANC) method. For this purpose a pure, low emittance $^7$Be beam was separated from the primary $^7$Li beam by a recoil mass spectrometer operated in a novel mode. A beam stopper at 0$^{\circ}$ allowed the use of a higher $^7$Be beam intensity. Measurement of the elastic scattering in the entrance channel using kinematic coincidence, facilitated the determination of the optical model parameters needed for the analysis of the transfer data. The present measurement significantly reduces errors in the extracted $^7$Be(p,$γ$) cross section using the ANC method. We get $S_{17}$~(0)~=~20.7~$\pm$~2.4 eV~b.

A relativistic two-nucleon model for $A(p,K^+){_Λ}B$ reaction

We investigate the $A(p,K^+){_Λ}B$ reaction within a covariant two nucleon model. We focus on amplitudes which are described by creation, propagation and decay into relevant channel of $N^*$(1650), $N^*$(1710), and $N^*$(1720) intermediate baryonic resonance states in the initial collision of the projectile nucleon with one of its target counterparts. This collision is modeled by the exchange of $π$ as well as $ρ$ and $ω$ mesons. The bound state nucleon and hyperon wave functions are obtained by solving the Dirac equation with appropriate scalar and vector potentials. Expressions for the reaction amplitudes are derived taking continuum particle wave functions in both distorted wave and plane wave approximations. Detailed numerical results are presented in the plane wave approximation; estimates of the effects of the initial and final state interactions are given in the eikonal approximation. Cross sections of 1 - 2 nb/sr at the peak positions, are obtained for favored transitions in case of heavier targets.

Structure of $^8$B and astrophysical $S_{17}$ factor

Nuclear structure data are of crucial importance in order to address important astrophysical problems such as the origin of chemical elements, the inner working of our Sun, and the evolution of stars. We demonstrate this by investigating the ground state structure of $^8$B and $^7$Be nuclei within the Skyrme Hartree-Fock framework and by calculating the overlap integral of $^8$B and $^7$Be wave functions. The latter is used to calculate the astrophysical S factor ($S_{17}$) for the solar fusion reaction $^{7}$Be($p, γ)^{8}$B.

Exclusive $K^+$ production in proton-nucleus collisions

The exclusive $K^+$ meson production in a proton-nucleus collision, leading to two body final states, is investigated in a fully covariant two-nucleon model based on the effective Lagrangian picture. The explicit kaon production vertex is described via creation, propagation and decay into relevant channel of $N^*$(1650), $N^*$(1710) and $N^*$(1720) intermediate baryonic states in the initial collision of the projectile nucleon with one of its target counterparts which is modeled by the one-pion exchange process. The calculated cross sections show strong sensitivity to the medium effects on pion propagator and to the final hypernuclear state excited in the reaction.

Baryon Interactions in Nuclear and Hypernuclear Matter

The production and structure of Λ hypernuclei are investigated in field theoretical models. The production in coherent p+A reactions is investigated by means of a resonance model. Results of exploratory calculations for associated strangeness production are presented for proton reactions on 40Ca. The target single particle wave functions are obtained from DDRH theory with density dependent Dirac-Brueckner meson-baryon vertices. The dependence of the in-medium vertices on density is discussed.

Breakup Reactions of Drip Line Nuclei

The formal theory of breakup reactions is reviewed. The direct breakup mechanism which is formulated within the framework of the post form distorted wave Born approximation is discussed in detail. In this theory, which requires the information about only the ground state wave function of the projectile, the fragment-target interactions are included to all orders while fragment-fragment interaction is treated only in the first order. The general applicability of this theory to describe the breakup of halo nuclei is demonstrated by comparing the calculations with data for total, as well as energy and angle integrated cross sections and momentum distributions of fragments in reactions induced by a number of halo nuclei. We investigate the role played by the pure Coulomb, pure nuclear and the Coulomb-nuclear interference terms. Postacceleration effects in the Coulomb breakup of neutron halo nuclei is also studied.
