Observation of Radially Inward Turbulent Particle Flux in ETG dominated Plasma of LVPD

Radially inward turbulent particle flux is observed in the core region of target plasma of Large Volume Plasma Device(LVPD). The region satisfy conditions for ETG turbulence, i.e. threshold condition, $ η_e = L_{n_e} / L_{T_e} > 2/3 $ , where density scale length, $ L_{n_e} \sim 300 cm $ and temerature scale length, $ L_{T_e} \sim 50cm $[S.K. Mattoo et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., 108, 255007(2012)\cite{Mattoo_PRL}]. The measured flux is dominantly electrostatic ($Γ_{es} \approx 10^{5} Γ_{em}$) although the nature of the measured turbulence is electromagnetic($β\approx 0.6 $). The turbulence has been established as a consequence of electron temperature gradient (ETG) driven modes. Experimental observations of phase angle between density ($ n_e $) and potential ($ϕ$) fluctuations, $ θ_{\tilde{n}_e, \tildeϕ} $ and electrostatic particle flux, $ Γ_{es} $ shows good agreement with the corresponding theoretical estimates for ETG turbulence.

Cotangent Bundle to the Flag Variety - I

We show that there is a ${SL_n}$-stable closed subset of an affine Schubert variety in the infinite dimensional Flag variety (associated to the Kac-Moody group ${\widehat{SL_n}}$) which is a natural compactification of the cotangent bundle to the finite-dimensional Flag variety ${SL_n/B}$.

Stellar kinematics across the Hubble sequence in the CALIFA survey: General properties and aperture corrections

We present the stellar kinematic maps of a large sample of galaxies from the integral-field spectroscopic survey CALIFA. The sample comprises 300 galaxies displaying a wide range of morphologies across the Hubble sequence, from ellipticals to late-type spirals. This dataset allows us to homogeneously extract stellar kinematics up to several effective radii. In this paper, we describe the level of completeness of this subset of galaxies with respect to the full CALIFA sample, as well as the virtues and limitations of the kinematic extraction compared to other well-known integral-field surveys. In addition, we provide averaged integrated velocity dispersion radial profiles for different galaxy types, which are particularly useful to apply aperture corrections for single aperture measurements or poorly resolved stellar kinematics of high-redshift sources. The work presented in this paper sets the basis for the study of more general properties of galaxies that will be explored in subsequent papers of the survey.

A quasi-linear analysis of the impurity effect on turbulent momentum transport and residual stress

We study the impact of impurities on turbulence driven intrinsic rotation (via residual stress) in the context of the quasi-linear theory. A two-fluid formulation for main and impurity ions is employed to study ion temperature gradient modes in sheared slab geometry modified by the presence of impurities. An effective form of the parallel Reynolds stress is derived in the center of mass frame of a coupled main ion-impurity system. Analyses show that the contents and the radial profile of impurities have a strong influence on the residual stress. In particular, an impurity profile aligned with that of main ions is shown to cause a considerable reduction of the residual stress, which may lead to the reduction of turbulence driven intrinsic rotation.

Effect of dilution of both A- and B- sites on the multiferroic properties of spinal Mott insulators

The structural, magnetic, electrical and transport properties of FeV2O4, by doping Li and Cr ions respectively in A and B sites, have been studied. Dilution of A-site by Li doping increases the ferri-magnetic ordering temperature and decreases the ferroelectric transition temperature. This also decreases the V-V distances which in effect increases the A-V coupling. This increased A-V coupling dominates over the decrease in A-V coupling due to doping of non-magnetic Li. On the other hand, Cr doping increases the ferri-magnetic ordering temperature but does not alter the ferroelectric transition temperature which is due to the fact that the polarization origin to the presence of almost non-substituted regions.

Effect of Li doping on magnetic and transport properties of CoV2O4 and FeV2O4

The structural, magnetic and transport properties have been studied of Li doped CoV2O4 and FeV2O4. Li doping increases the ferri-magnetic ordering temperature of both the samples but decreases the spin-glass transition temperature of CoV2O4. The Li-doping decreases the V-V distance which in effect increases the A-V coupling. Thus the increased A-V coupling dominate over the decrease in A-V coupling due to doping of non-magnetic Li.

CALIFA, the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area survey. III. Second public data release

This paper describes the Second Public Data Release (DR2) of the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area (CALIFA) survey. The data for 200 objects are made public, including the 100 galaxies of the First Public Data Release (DR1). Data were obtained with the integral-field spectrograph PMAS/PPak mounted on the 3.5 m telescope at the Calar Alto observatory. Two different spectral setups are available for each galaxy, (i) a low-resolution V500 setup covering the wavelength range 3745-7500 Å with a spectral resolution of 6.0 Å (FWHM), and (ii) a medium-resolution V1200 setup covering the wavelength range 3650-4840 Å with a spectral resolution of 2.3 Å (FWHM). The sample covers a redshift range between 0.005 and 0.03, with a wide range of properties in the Color-Magnitude diagram, stellar mass, ionization conditions, and morphological types. All released cubes were reduced with the latest pipeline, including improved spectrophotometric calibration, spatial registration and spatial resolution. The spectrophotometric calibration is better than 6% and the median spatial resolution is 2.5". Altogether the second data release contains over 1.5 million spectra. It is available at http://califa.caha.es/DR2.

Field dependent Anisotropic Micro Rheological and Microstructrual properties of Ferrofluids

We have measured micro-rheological and micro-structural properties of a super paramagnetic ferrofluid made of Mn$_{0.75}$Zn$_{0.25}$Fe$_2$O$_4$ (MZF) nanoparticles, using passive microrheology in a home built inverted microscope. Thermal motion of a probe microsphere was measured for different values of an applied external magnetic field and analysed. The analysis shows anisotropy in magnetoviscous effect. Additional microrheological properties, such as storage modulus and loss modulus and their transition is seen. Following the analysis given in \cite{Oliver Muller, Stefan Mahle}, we have obtained microstructural properties such as elongational flow coefficient $λ_2$, relaxation time constant $τ$, coefficient of dissipative magnetization $α$ etc. From a single set of viscosity data, all the above parameters could be obtained. Our values for the above parameters are in agreement with earlier theoretical calculations and macro-rheological experimental measurements.

The nature of LINER galaxies: Ubiquitous hot old stars and rare accreting black holes

Galaxies, which often contain ionised gas, sometimes also exhibit a so-called low-ionisation nuclear emission line region (LINER). For 30 years this was attributed to a central mass-accreting supermassive black hole (AGN) of low luminosity, making LINER galaxies the largest AGN-sub-population, dominating in numbers over higher luminosity Seyfert galaxies and quasars. This, however, poses a serious problem. While the inferred energy balance is plausible, many LINERs clearly do not contain any other independent signatures of an AGN. Using integral field spectroscopic data from the CALIFA survey, we aim at comparing the observed radial surface brightness profiles with what is expected from illumination by an AGN. Essential for this analysis is a proper extraction of emission-lines, especially weak lines such as the Balmer Hb line which is superposed on an absorption trough. To accomplish this, we use the GANDALF code which simultaneously fits the underlying stellar continuum and emission lines. We show for 48 galaxies with LINER-like emission, that the radial emission-line surface brightness profiles are inconsistent with ionisation by a central point-source and hence cannot be due to an AGN alone. The most probable explanation for the excess LINER-like emission is ionisation by evolved stars during the short but very hot and energetic phase known as post-AGB. This leads us to an entirely new interpretation. Post-AGB stars are ubiquitous and their ionising effect should be potentially observable in every galaxy with gas present and stars older than ~1 Gyr, unless a stronger radiation field from young hot stars or an AGN outshines them. This means that galaxies with LINER-like emission are in fact not a class defined by a property, but rather by the absence of a property. It also explains why LINER emission is observed mostly in massive galaxies with old stars and little star formation.

Exciton-Trion Coherent Interactions in a CdTe/CdMgTe Quantum Well

We present a collection of zero-, one- and two-quantum two-dimensional coherent spectra of excitons and trions in a CdTe/(Cd,Mg)Te quantum well. The set of spectra provides a unique and comprehensive picture of the exciton and trion nonlinear optical response. Exciton-exciton and exciton-trion coherent coupling is manifest as distinct peaks in the spectra, whereas signatures of trion-trion interactions are absent. Excellent agreement using density matrix calculations is obtained, which highlights the essential role of many-body effects on coherent interactions in the quantum well.

Linear Polarization Measurements for High-Spin States in 146Gd

A γ-ray linear polarization measurement has been performed to directly determine the parities for the levels in 146Gd nucleus. High-spin states in this nucleus were populated in a reaction 115In + 34S at 140 MeV incident energy. Linearly polarized γ - rays emitted from oriented states were measured using a Compton polarimeter consisting of an array of 8 Compton-suppressed Clover detectors. Unambiguous assignments of the spin and parity have been made for most of the observed levels and changes made in the previously reported spin-parity assignments for a few levels. Shell model calculations performed with judicious truncation over the π(gdsh) valence space interpret the structure of only the low-lying levels up to Jπ = 19+ and 9-. N = 82 neutron-core breaking is found to be essential for high spin states with excitation energies Ex > 7 MeV.

CALIFA, the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area survey. II. First public data release

We present the first public data release of the CALIFA survey. It consists of science-grade optical datacubes for the first 100 of eventually 600 nearby (0.005<z<0.03) galaxies, obtained with the integral-field spectrograph PMAS/PPak mounted on the 3.5m telescope at the Calar Alto observatory. The galaxies in DR1 already cover a wide range of properties in color-magnitude space, morphological type, stellar mass, and gas ionization conditions. This offers the potential to tackle a variety of open questions in galaxy evolution using spatially resolved spectroscopy. Two different spectral setups are available for each galaxy, (i) a low-resolution V500 setup covering the nominal wavelength range 3745-7500A with a spectral resolution of 6.0A (FWHM), and (ii) a medium-resolution V1200 setup covering the nominal wavelength range 3650-4840A with a spectral resolution of 2.3A (FWHM). We present the characteristics and data structure of the CALIFA datasets that should be taken into account for scientific exploitation of the data, in particular the effects of vignetting, bad pixels and spatially correlated noise. The data quality test for all 100 galaxies showed that we reach a median limiting continuum sensitivity of 1.0x10^-18erg/s/cm^2/A/arcsec^2 at 5635A and 2.2x10^-18erg/s/cm^2/A/arcsec^2 at 4500A for the V500 and V1200 setup respectively, which corresponds to limiting r and g band surface brightnesses of 23.6mag/arcsec^2 and 23.4mag/arcsec^2, or an unresolved emission-line flux detection limit of roughly 1x10^-17erg/s/cm^2/arcsec^2 and 0.6x10^-17erg/s/cm^2/arcsec^2, respectively. The median spatial resolution is 3.7", and the absolute spectrophotometric calibration is better than 15% (1sigma). We also describe the available interfaces and tools that allow easy access to this first public CALIFA data.

Interpretation of transverse tune spectra in a heavy-ion synchrotron at high intensities

Two different tune measurement systems have been installed in the GSI heavy-ion synchrotron SIS-18. Tune spectra are obtained with high accuracy using these fast and sensitive systems. Besides the machine tune, the spectra contain information about the intensity dependent coherent tune shift and the incoherent space charge tune shift. The space charge tune shift is derived from a fit of the observed shifted positions of the synchrotron satellites to an analytic expression for the head-tail eigenmodes with space charge. Furthermore, the chromaticity is extracted from the measured head-tail mode structure. The results of the measurements provide experimental evidence of the importance of space charge effects and head-tail modes for the interpretation of transverse beam signals at high intensity.

Phase Stability of Multiferroic GaFeO3 up to 1368 K from In situ Neutron Diffraction

We report a detailed high-temperature powder neutron diffraction investigation of the structural behavior of the multiferroic GaFeO3 between 296 and 1368 K. Temperature dependent neutron diffraction patterns do not show any appreciable change either in intensity or appearance/disappearance of the observed peaks upto 1368 K, ruling out any structural transition in the entire temperature range. The lattice parameters and volume exhibit normal thermal expansion behaviour, indicating the absence of any structural changes with increasing temperature. The origin of the magnetoelectric couplings and multiferroicity in GaFeO3 is known to be influenced by the site disorder from Ga/Fe atoms. Our analysis shows that this disorder remains nearly the same upon increase of temperature from 296 to 1368 K. The structural parameters as obtained from Rietveld refinement of neutron diffraction data are used to calculate the interatomic distances and distortions of the oxygen polyhedra around the Ga1, Ga2, Fe1 and Fe2 cations. Evolution of the distortion of the oxygen polyhedra around these sites suggests that the Ga1-O tetrahedron is least distorted and Fe1-O is most distorted. Structural features regarding the distortion of polyhedral units would be crucial to understand the temperature dependence of the microscopic origin of polarizations. The electric polarization has been estimated using a simple ionic model and its value is found to decrease with increasing temperature.

Fifth-order nonlinear optical response of excitonic states in an InAs quantum dot ensemble measured with 2D spectroscopy

Exciton, trion and biexciton dephasing rates are measured within the inhomogeneous distribution of an InAs quantum dot (QD) ensemble using two-dimensional Fourier-transform spectroscopy. The dephasing rate of each excitonic state is similar for all QDs in the ensemble and the rates are independent of excitation density. An additional spectral feature -- too weak to be observed in the time-integrated four-wave mixing signal -- appears at high excitation density and is attributed to the $χ^{\textrm{(5)}}$ biexcitonic nonlinear response.

Semiconductor quantum dots with light-hole exciton ground state: fabrication and fine structure

Quantum dots (QDs) can act as convenient hosts of two-level quantum szstems, such as single electron spins, hole spins or excitons (bound electron-hole pairs). Due to quantum confinement, the ground state of a single hole confined in a QD usually has dominant heavy-hole (HH) character. For this reason light-hole (LH) states have been largely neglected, despite the fact that may enable the realilzation of coherent photon-to-spin converters or allow for faster spin manipulation compared to HH states. In this work, we use tensile strains larger than 0.3% to switch the ground state of excitons confined in high quality GaAs/AlGaAs QDs from the conventional HH- to LH-type. The LH-exciton fine structure is characterized by two in-plane-polarized lines and, ~400 micro-eV above them, by an additional line with pronounced out-of-plane oscillator strength, consistent with theoretical predictions based on atomistic empirical pseudopotential calculations and a simple mesoscopic model.

CALIFA, the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area survey: I. Survey presentation

We present here the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area (CALIFA) survey, which has been designed to provide a first step in this direction. We summarize the survey goals and design, including sample selection and observational strategy. We also showcase the data taken during the first observing runs (June/July 2010) and outline the reduction pipeline, quality control schemes and general characteristics of the reduced data. This survey is obtaining spatially resolved spectroscopic information of a diameter selected sample of $\sim600$ galaxies in the Local Universe (0.005< z <0.03). CALIFA has been designed to allow the building of two-dimensional maps of the following quantities: (a) stellar populations: ages and metallicities; (b) ionized gas: distribution, excitation mechanism and chemical abundances; and (c) kinematic properties: both from stellar and ionized gas components. CALIFA uses the PPAK Integral Field Unit (IFU), with a hexagonal field-of-view of $\sim1.3\sq\arcmin'$, with a 100% covering factor by adopting a three-pointing dithering scheme. The optical wavelength range is covered from 3700 to 7000 Å, using two overlapping setups (V500 and V1200), with different resolutions: R\sim850 and R\sim1650, respectively. CALIFA is a legacy survey, intended for the community. The reduced data will be released, once the quality has been guaranteed. The analyzed data fulfill the expectations of the original observing proposal, on the basis of a set of quality checks and exploratory analysis. We conclude from this first look at the data that CALIFA will be an important resource for archaeological studies of galaxies in the Local Universe.

Terahertz metamaterial with asymmetric transmission

We show for the first time that a planar metamaterial, an array of coupled metal split-ring resonators with a unit cell lacking mirror symmetry, exhibits asymmetric transmission of terahertz radiation (0.25-2.5 THz) propagating through it in opposite directions. This intriguing effect, that is compatible with Lorentz reciprocity and time-reversal, depends on a directional difference in conversion efficiency of the incident circularly polarized wave into one of opposite handedness, that is only possible in lossy low-symmetry planar chiral metamaterials. We show that asymmetric transmission is linked to excitation of enantiomerically sensitive plasmons, these are induced charge-field excitations that depend on the mutual handedness of incident wave and metamaterial pattern. Various bands of positive, negative and zero phase and group velocities have been identified indicating the opportunity to develop polarization sensitive negative index and slow light media based on such metamaterials.
