Dirac, Majorana, Weyl in 4d

This is a review of some elementary properties of Dirac, Weyl and Majorana spinors in 4d. We focus in particular on the differences between massless Dirac and Majorana fermions, on one side, and Weyl fermions, on the other. We review in detail the definition of their effective actions, when coupled to (vector and axial) gauge fields, and revisit the corresponding anomalies using the Feynman diagram method with different regularizations. Among various well known results we stress in particular the regularization independence in perturbative approaches, while not all the regularizations fit the non-perturbative ones. As for anomalies, we highlight in particular one perhaps not so well known feature: the rigid relation between chiral and trace anomalies.

Parity Breaking Medium and Squeeze Operators

The transition between a Minkowski space region and a parity breaking medium domain is thoroughly discussed. The requirement of continuity of the field operator content across the separating boundary of the two domains leads to Bogolyubov transformations, squeezed pairs states and squeeze operators that turn out to generate a functional SU(2) algebra. According to this algebraic approach, the reflection and transmission probability amplitude across the separating boundary are computed. The probability rate of the emission or absorption of squeezed pairs out of the vacuum (generalization of the Sauter-Schwinger-Nikishov formula) is obtained.

Propagation of photons and massive vector mesons between a parity breaking medium and vacuum

The problem of propagation of photons and massive vector mesons in the presence of Lorenz and CPT invariance violating medium is studied when the parity-odd medium is bounded by a hyperplane separating it from the vacuum. The solutions in both half-spaces are carefully discussed and in the case of space-like boundary stitched on the boundary with help of the Bogolubov transformations provided by the space-like Chern-Simons vector. The presence of two different Fock vacua is shown and the probability amplitude for transmission of particles from vacuum to parity breaking medium is calculated. We have also found classical solutions and showed that the results are consistent with ones obtained by canonical quantization formalism. In the cases, both of entrance to and of escaping from parity-odd medium, the probabilities for reflecting and passing through were found for each polarization using the classical solutions. Finally, the propagator for each polarization is obtained in the momentum space. Boundary effects under consideration are of certain importance for registration of local parity violation in the finite volume of heavy ion fireball and/or of a star with cold axion condensate.

Bare and Induced Lorentz and CPT Invariance Violations in QED

We consider QED in a constant axial vector background (Æther). Further Lorentz invariance violations (LIV) might occur owing to radiative corrections. The phenomenology of this model is studied, clarifying issues related to the various regularizations employed, with a particular emphasis on the induced photon mass. To this concern, it is shown that in the presence of LIV dimensional regularization may produce a radiatively induced finite photon mass. The possible physical role of the large momentum cutoff is elucidated and the finite temperature radiative corrections are evaluated. Finally, various experimental bounds on the parameters of the model are discussed.

Symmetries and the cosmological constant puzzle

We outline the evaluation of the cosmological constant in the framework of the standard field-theoretical treatment of vacuum energy and discuss the relation between the vacuum energy problem and the gauge-group spontaneous symmetry breaking. We suggest possible extensions of the 't Hooft-Nobbenhuis symmetry, in particular, its complexification till duality symmetry and discuss the compatible implementation on gravity. We propose to use the discrete time-reflection transform to formulate a framework in which one can eliminate the huge contributions of vacuum energy into the effective cosmological constant and suggest that the breaking of time--reflection symmetry could be responsible for a small observable value of this constant.

On the consistency of Lorentz invariance violation in QED induced by fermions in constant axial-vector background

We show for the first time that the induced parity--even Lorentz invariance violation can be unambiguously calculated in the physically justified and minimally broken dimensional regularization scheme, suitably tailored for a spontaneous Lorentz symmetry breaking in a field theory model. The quantization of the Lorentz invariance violating quantum electrodynamics is critically examined and shown to be consistent either for a light--like cosmic anisotropy axial--vector or for a time--like one, when in the presence of a bare photon mass.

Brane world generation by matter and gravity

We present a non-compact (4 + 1) dimensional model with a local strong four-fermion interaction supplementing it with gravity. In the strong coupling regime it reveals the spontaneous translational symmetry breaking which eventually leads to the formation of domain walls, or thick 3-branes, embedded in the AdS-5 manifold. To describe this phenomenon we construct the appropriate low-energy effective Action and find kink-like vacuum solutions in the quasi-flat Riemannian metric. We discuss the generation of ultra-low-energy (3 + 1) dimensional physics and we establish the relation among the bulk five dimensional gravitational constant, the brane Newton's constants and the curvature of AdS-5 space-time. The plausible relation between the compositeness scale of the scalar matter and the symmetry breaking scale is shown to support the essential decoupling of branons, the scalar fluctuations of the brane, from the Standard Model matter, supporting their possible role in the dark matter saturation. The induced cosmological constant on the brane does vanish due to exact cancellation of matter and gravity contributions.

Decay in a uniform field: an exactly solvable model

We investigate the time evolution of the decay (or ionization) probability of a D-dimensional model atom (D=1,2,3) in the presence of a uniform (i.e., static and homogeneous) background field. The model atom consists in a non-relativistic point particle in the presence of a point-like attractive well. It is shown that the model exhibits infinitely many resonances leading to possible deviations from the naive exponential decay law of the non-decay (or survival) probability of the initial atomic quantum state. Almost stable states exist due to the presence of the attractive interaction, no matter how weak it is. Analytic estimates as well as numerical evaluation of the decay rates are explicitly given and discussed.

Domain wall generation by fermion self-interaction and light particles

A possible explanation for the appearance of light fermions and Higgs bosons on the four-dimensional domain wall is proposed. The mechanism of light particle trapping is accounted for by a strong self-interaction of five-dimensional pre-quarks. We obtain the low-energy effective action which exhibits the invariance under the so called τ-symmetry. Then we find a set of vacuum solutions which break that symmetry and the five-dimensional translational invariance. One type of those vacuum solutions gives rise to the domain wall formation with consequent trapping of light massive fermions and Higgs-like bosons as well as massless sterile scalars, the so-called branons. The induced relations between low-energy couplings for Yukawa and scalar field interactions allow to make certain predictions for light particle masses and couplings themselves, which might provide a signature of the higher dimensional origin of particle physics at future experiments. The manifest translational symmetry breaking, eventually due to some gravitational and/or matter fields in five dimensions, is effectively realized with the help of background scalar defects. As a result the branons acquire masses, whereas the ratio of Higgs and fermion (presumably top-quark) masses can be reduced towards the values compatible with the present-day phenomenology. Since the branons do not couple to fermions and the Higgs bosons do not decay into branons, the latter ones are essentially sterile and stable, what makes them the natural candidates for the dark matter in the Universe.

Lorentz and CPT violations from Chern-Simons modifications of QED

The possibility of a small modification of spinor Quantum Electro-Dynamics is reconsidered, in which Lorentz and CPT non-covariant kinetic terms for photons and fermions are present. The corresponding free field theory is carefully discussed. The finite one-loop parity-odd induced effective action is unambiguously calculated using the physical cutoff method, which manifestly encodes the maximal residual symmetry group allowed by the presence of the Lorentz and CPT breaking axial-vector. This very same induced effective action, which is different from those ones so far quoted in the Literature, is also re-derived by means of the dimensional regularization, provided the maximal residual symmetry is maintained in the enlarged $D$-dimensional space-time. As a consequence, it turns out that the requirement of keeping the maximal residual symmetry at the quantum level just corresponds to the physical renormalization prescription which naturally fixes the one-loop parity-odd induced effective action.

Bose-Einstein condensation in the presence of a uniform field and a point-like impurity

The behavior of an ideal $D$-dimensional boson gas in the presence of a uniform gravitational field is analyzed. It is explicitly shown that, contrarily to an old standing folklore, the three-dimensional gas does not undergo Bose-Einstein condensation at finite temperature. On the other hand, Bose-Einstein condensation occurs at $T\neq 0$ for $D=1,2,3$ if there is a point-like impurity at the bottom of the vessel containing the gas.

Spontaneous CPT asymmetry of the Universe

The extended QED with renormalizable interactions breaking the Lorentz and CPT symmetry is considered and the phenomenological consequences of such a symmetry breaking are illuminated in view of recent discussion of large scale anisotropy of the Universe. Other physical effects in QED with CPT violation are examined, in particular, mass splitting between electrons of different helicities and decay of very high energetic electrons into lower energy electrons and positrons.

Consistent Perturbative Light Front Formulation of Yang-Mills Theories

It is shown how to obtain the consistent light front form quantization of a non-Abelian pure Yang-Mills theory (gluondynamics) in the framework of the standard perturbative approach. After a short review of the previous attempts in the light cone gauge $A_-=0$, it is explained how the difficulties can be overcome after turning to the anti light cone gauge $A_+=0$. In particular, the generating functional of the renormalized Green's functions turns out to be the same as in the conventional instant form approach, leading to the Mandelstam-Leibbrandt prescription for the free gluon propagator.

Non-trivial Behaviour of the Scattering Amplitude of Contact-interacting Anyons

It is shown that the scattering amplitude for contact-interacting anyons does exhibit a genuine non-perturbative sector. This means that the corresponding perturbative field theoretical formulation, based on the {\it 2+1} non-relativistic Chern-Simons gauge model coupled to self-interacting complex scalar field, is not generally able to reproduce, order by order in perturbation theory, the exact result. It is proven that the full agreement between the exact scattering amplitude and the resummation of the perturbative expansion of the renormalized 1PI amplitude actually occurs only for some continuous sub-family of self-adjoint extensions of the quantum Hamiltonians, which entail the absence of bound states. A comparison with previously obtained results is carefully worked out.

Dynamical Lorentz simmetry breaking from 3+1 Axion-Wess-Zumino model

We study the renormalizable abelian vector-field models in the presence of the Wess-Zumino interaction with the pseudoscalar matter. The renormalizability is achieved by supplementing the standard kinetic term of vector fields with higher derivatives. The appearance of fourth power of momentum in the vector-field propagator leads to the super-renormalizable theory in which the $β$-function, the vector-field renormalization constant and the anomalous mass dimension are calculated exactly. It is shown that this model has the infrared stable fixed point and its low-energy limit is non-trivial. The modified effective potential for the pseudoscalar matter leads to the possible occurrence of dynamical breaking of the Lorentz symmetry. This phenomenon is related to the modification of Electrodynamics by means of the Chern-Simons (CS) interaction polarized along a constant CS vector. Its presence makes the vacuum optically active that has been recently estimated from astrophysical data. We examine two possibilities for the CS vector to be time-like or space-like, under the assumption that it originates from v.e.v. of some pseudoscalar matter and show that only the latter one is consistent in the framework of the AWZ model, because a time-like CS vector makes the vacuum unstable under pairs creation of tachyonic photon modes with the finite vacuum decay rate.

Patterns of Lorentz symmetry breaking in QED by CPT-odd interaction

A tiny Lorentz symmetry breaking can be mediated in Electrodynamics by means of the Chern-Simons (CS) interaction polarized along a constant CS vector. Its presence makes the vacuum optically active that has been recently estimated from astrophysical data. We examine two possibilities for the CS vector to be time-like or space-like, under the assumption that it originates from v.e.v. of some pseudoscalar matter. It is shown that: a) a time-like CS vector makes the vacuum unstable under pairs creation of tachyonic photon modes with the finite vacuum decay rate, i.e. it is unlikely realized at macroscopic time scales; b) on the contrary, the space-like CS vector does not yield any tachyonic modes and, moreover, if its dynamical counterpart is substantially described by a scale invariant interaction, then the QED radiation effects induce the dynamical breaking of Lorentz symmetry, i.e. the occurrence of space-like CS vector appears to be rather natural.

Dynamical Lorentz Symmetry Breaking from 3 + 1 Renormalizable Model with Wess-Zumino Interaction

We study the renormalizable abelian vector-field models in the presence of the Wess-Zumino interaction with the pseudoscalar matter. The renormalizability is achieved by supplementing the standard kinetic term of vector fields with higher derivatives. The appearance of fourth power of momentum in the vector-field propagator leads to the super-renormalizable theory in which the beta-function, the vector-field renormalization constant and the anomalous mass dimension are calculated exactly. It is shown that this model has the infrared stable fixed point and its low-energy limit is non-trivial. The modified effective potential for the pseudoscalar matter leads to the occurrence of the quantum dynamical breaking of Lorentz symmetry.
