FLAG Review 2024

We review lattice results related to pion, kaon, $D$-meson, $B$-meson, and nucleon physics with the aim of making them easily accessible to the nuclear and particle physics communities. More specifically, we report on the determination of the light-quark masses, the form factor $f_+(0)$ arising in the semileptonic $K \to \pi$ transition at zero momentum transfer, as well as the decay-constant ratio $f_K/f_\pi$ and its consequences for the CKM matrix elements $V_{us}$ and $V_{ud}$. We review the determination of the $B_K$ parameter of neutral kaon mixing as well as the additional four $B$ parameters that arise in theories of physics beyond the Standard Model. For the heavy-quark sector, we provide results for $m_c$ and $m_b$ as well as those for the decay constants, form factors, and mixing parameters of charmed and bottom mesons and baryons. These are the heavy-quark quantities most relevant for the determination of CKM matrix elements and the global CKM unitarity-triangle fit. We review the status of lattice determinations of the strong coupling constant $\alpha_s$. We review the determinations of nucleon charges from the matrix elements of both isovector and flavour-diagonal axial, scalar and tensor local quark bilinears, and momentum fraction, helicity moment and the transversity moment from one-link quark bilinears. We also review determinations of scale-setting quantities. Finally, in this review we have added a new section on the general definition of the low-energy limit of the Standard Model.

$α_s$(2019): Precision measurements of the QCD coupling

This document collects a written summary of all contributions presented at the workshop "$α_s$(2019): Precision measurements of the strong coupling" held at ECT* (Trento) in Feb. 11--15, 2019. The workshop explored in depth the latest developments on the determination of the QCD coupling $α_s$ from the key categories where high precision measurements are available: (i) lattice QCD, (ii) hadronic $τ$ decays, (iii) deep-inelastic scattering and parton distribution functions, (iv) event shapes, jet cross sections, and other hadronic final-states in $e^+e^-$ collisions, (v) Z boson and W boson hadronic decays, and (vi) hadronic final states in p-p collisions. The status of the current theoretical and experimental uncertainties associated to each extraction method, and future perspectives were thoroughly reviewed. Novel $α_s$ determination approaches were discussed, as well as the combination method used to obtain a world-average value of the QCD coupling at the Z mass pole.

The strong coupling from a nonperturbative determination of the $Λ$ parameter in three-flavor QCD

We present a lattice determination of the $Λ$ parameter in three-flavor QCD and the strong coupling at the Z pole mass. Computing the nonperturbative running of the coupling in the range from $0.2\,$GeV to $70\,$GeV, and using experimental input values for the masses and decay constants of the pion and the kaon, we obtain $Λ_{\overline{\rm MS}}^{(3)}=341(12)\,$MeV. The nonperturbative running up to very high energies guarantees that systematic effects associated with perturbation theory are well under control. Using the four-loop prediction for $Λ_{\overline{\rm MS}}^{(5)}/Λ_{\overline{\rm MS}}^{(3)}$ yields $α^{(5)}_{\overline{\rm MS}}(m_{\rm Z}) = 0.11852(84)$.

The $Λ$-parameter in 3-flavour QCD and $α_s(m_Z)$ by the ALPHA collaboration

We present results by the ALPHA collaboration for the $Λ$-parameter in 3-flavour QCD and the strong coupling constant at the electroweak scale, $α_s(m_Z)$, in terms of hadronic quantities computed on the CLS gauge configurations. The first part of this proceedings contribution contains a review of published material \cite{Brida:2016flw,DallaBrida:2016kgh} and yields the $Λ$-parameter in units of a low energy scale, $1/L_{\rm had}$. We then discuss how to determine this scale in physical units from experimental data for the pion and kaon decay constants. We obtain $Λ_{\overline{\rm MS}}^{(3)} = 332(14)$ MeV which translates to $α_s(M_Z)=0.1179(10)(2)$ using perturbation theory to match between 3-, 4- and 5-flavour QCD.

Extraction of the bare form factors for the semi-leptonic $B_s$ decays

The computation of the form factors for the $B_s \to K \ell ν$ decay is presented. The b quark is treated by means of Heavy Quark Effective Theory, currently in the static approximation. In these proceedings we discuss the extraction of the bare matrix elements from lattice data through a combined fit to two- and three-point correlation functions, as well as by considering suitable ratios. The different methods agree concerning the extracted form factors and approximately 2% accuracy is reached. The non-perturbative renormalization and matching to QCD is described in accompanying proceedings PoS(LATTICE2016)292.

Review of lattice results concerning low-energy particle physics

We review lattice results related to pion, kaon, D- and B-meson physics with the aim of making them easily accessible to the particle physics community. More specifically, we report on the determination of the light-quark masses, the form factor f+(0), arising in the semileptonic K -> pi transition at zero momentum transfer, as well as the decay constant ratio fK/fpi and its consequences for the CKM matrix elements Vus and Vud. Furthermore, we describe the results obtained on the lattice for some of the low-energy constants of SU(2)LxSU(2)R and SU(3)LxSU(3)R Chiral Perturbation Theory. We review the determination of the BK parameter of neutral kaon mixing as well as the additional four B parameters that arise in theories of physics beyond the Standard Model. The latter quantities are an addition compared to the previous review. For the heavy-quark sector, we provide results for mc and mb (also new compared to the previous review), as well as those for D- and B-meson decay constants, form factors, and mixing parameters. These are the heavy-quark quantities most relevant for the determination of CKM matrix elements and the global CKM unitarity-triangle fit. Finally, we review the status of lattice determinations of the strong coupling constant alpha_s.

Decay constants of B-mesons from non-perturbative HQET with two light dynamical quarks

We present a computation of B-meson decay constants from lattice QCD simulations within the framework of Heavy Quark Effective Theory for the b-quark. The next-to-leading order corrections in the HQET expansion are included non-perturbatively. Based on Nf=2 gauge field ensembles, covering three lattice spacings a (0.08-0.05)fm and pion masses down to 190MeV, a variational method for extracting hadronic matrix elements is used to keep systematic errors under control. In addition we perform a careful autocorrelation analysis in the extrapolation to the continuum and to the physical pion mass limits. Our final results read fB=186(13)MeV, fBs=224(14)MeV and fBs/fB=1.203(65). A comparison with other results in the literature does not reveal a dependence on the number of dynamical quarks, and effects from truncating HQET appear to be negligible.

The b-quark mass from non-perturbative $N_f=2$ Heavy Quark Effective Theory at $O(1/m_h)$

We report our final estimate of the b-quark mass from $N_f=2$ lattice QCD simulations using Heavy Quark Effective Theory non-perturbatively matched to QCD at $O(1/m_h)$. Treating systematic and statistical errors in a conservative manner, we obtain $\overline{m}_{\rm b}^{\overline{\rm MS}}(2 {\rm GeV})=4.88(15)$ GeV after an extrapolation to the physical point.

B-physics with $N_f=2$ Wilson fermions

We report the final results of the ALPHA collaboration for some B-physics observables: $f_B$, $f_{B_s}$ and $m_b$. We employ CLS configurations with 2 flavors of $O(a)$ improved Wilson fermions in the sea and pion masses ranging down to 190 MeV. The b-quark is treated in HQET to order $1/m_b$. The renormalization, the matching and the improvement were performed non-perturbatively, and three lattice spacings reaching $a=0.048$ fm are used in the continuum extrapolation.

$|V_{ub}|$ determination in lattice QCD

The 2012 PDG reports a tension at the level of $3 σ$ between two exclusive determinations of $|V_{ub}|$. They are obtained by combining the experimental branching ratios of $B \to τν$ and $B \to πl ν$ (respectively) with a theoretical computation of the hadronic matrix elements $\fB$ and the $B \to π$ form factor $f_+(q^2)$. To understand the tension, improved precision and a careful analysis of the systematics involved are necessary. We report the results of the ALPHA collaboration for $\fB$ from the lattice with 2 flavors of $O(a)$ improved Wilson fermions. We employ HQET, including $1/m_b$ corrections, with pion masses ranging down to $\approx$ 190 MeV. Renormalization and matching were performed non-perturbatively, and three lattice spacings reaching $a^{-1}\approx 4.1$ GeV are used in the continuum extrapolation. We also present progress towards a computation of $f_+(q^2)$, to directly compare two independent exclusive determinations of $|V_{ub}|$ with each other and with inclusive determinations. Additionally, we report on preliminary results for $\fBq{s}$, needed for the analysis of $B_s \to μ^+μ^-$.}

B-physics from HQET in two-flavour lattice QCD

We present our analysis of B physics quantities using non-perturbatively matched Heavy Quark Effective Theory (HQET) in Nf= 2 lattice QCD on the CLS ensembles. Using all-to-all propagators, HYP-smeared static quarks, and the Generalized Eigenvalue Problem (GEVP) approach with a conservative plateau selection procedure, we are able to systematically control all sources of error. With significantly increased statistics compared to last year, our preliminary results are mb (mb) = 4.22(10)(4)z GeV for the MS b-quark mass, and fB = 193(9)stat (4)_χMeV and fBs = 219(12)stat MeV for the B-meson decay constants.

Workshop on Precision Measurements of alphas

These are the proceedings of the "Workshop on Precision Measurements of alphas" held at the Max-Planck-Institute for Physics, Munich, February 9-11, 2011. The workshop explored in depth the determination of alphas(mZ) in the MS-bar scheme from the key categories where high precision measurements are currently being made, including DIS and global PDF fits, tau-decays, electroweak precision observables and Z-decays, event-shapes, and lattice QCD. These proceedings contain a short summary contribution from the speakers, as well as the lists of authors, conveners, participants, and talks.

Efficient use of the Generalized Eigenvalue Problem

We analyze the systematic errors made when using the generalized eigenvalue problem to extract energies and matrix elements in lattice gauge theory. Effective theories such as HQET are also discussed. Numerical results are shown for the extraction of ground-state and excited B-meson masses and the ground-state decay constant in the static approximation.

Preparing for N_f=2 simulations at small lattice spacings

We discuss some large effects of dynamical fermions. One is a cutoff effect, others concern the contribution of multi-pion states to correlation functions and are expected to survive the continuum limit. We then turn to the preparation for simulations at small lattice spacings which we are planning down to around a=0.04fm in order to understand the size of O(a^2)-effects of the standard O(a)-improved theory. The dependence of the lattice spacing on the bare coupling is determined through the Schr"odinger functional renormalized coupling.

The B-meson mass splitting from non-perturbative quenched lattice QCD

We perform the non-perturbative (quenched) renormalization of the chromo-magnetic operator in Heavy Quark Effective Theory and its three-loop matching to QCD. At order 1/m of the expansion, the operator is responsible for the mass splitting between the pseudoscalar and vector B-mesons. These new computed factors are affected by an uncertainty negligible in comparison to the known bare matrix element of the operator between B-states. Furthermore, they push the quenched determination of the spin splitting for the Bs-meson much closer to its experimental value than the previous perturbatively renormalized computations. The renormalization factor for three commonly used heavy quark actions and the Wilson gauge action and useful parametrizations of the matching coefficient are provided.
