Sheet model description of spatio-temporal evolution of upper-hybrid oscillations in an inhomogeneous magnetic field

Spatio-temporal evolution of large amplitude upper hybrid oscillations in a cold homogeneous plasma in the presence of an inhomogeneous magnetic field is studied analytically and numerically using the Dawson sheet model. It is observed that the inhomogeneity in magnetic field which causes the upper hybrid frequency to acquire a spatial dependence, results in phase mixing and subsequent breaking of the upper hybrid oscillations at arbitrarily low amplitudes. This result is in sharp contrast to the usual upper hybrid oscillations in a homogeneous magnetic field where the oscillations break within a fraction of a period when the amplitude exceeds a certain critical value. Our perturbative calculations show that the phase mixing (wave breaking) time scales inversely with the amplitude of magnetic field inhomogeneity ($Δ$) and amplitude of imposed density perturbation ($δ$), and scales directly with the ratio of magnetic field inhomogeneity scale length to imposed density perturbation scale length ($(α/k_L)^{-1}$ ) as $ω_{pe}τ_{mix} \sim \left( 1+β^2 \right) ^{3/2}k_L/(β^2δΔα)$, where $β$ is the ratio of electron cyclotron frequency to electron plasma frequency. Further phase mixing time measured in simulations, performed using a 1-1/2 D code based on Dawson sheet model, shows good agreement with the above mentioned scaling. This result may be of relevance to plasma based particle acceleration experiments in the presence of a transverse inhomogeneous magnetic field.

Absolute Flux Density Calibration of the Greenland Telescope Data for Event Horizon Telescope Observations

Starting from the observing campaign in April 2018, the Greenland Telescope (GLT) has been added as a new station of the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) array. Visibilities on baselines to the GLT, particularly in the North-South direction, potentially provide valuable new constraints for the modeling and imaging of sources such as M87*. The GLT's location at high Northern latitudes adds unique challenges to its calibration strategies. Additionally, the performance of the GLT was not optimal during the 2018 observations due to it being only partially commissioned at the time. This document describes the steps taken to estimate the various parameters (and their uncertainties) required for the absolute flux calibration of the GLT data as part of the EHT. In particular, we consider the non-optimized status of the GLT in 2018, as well as its improved performance during the 2021 EHT campaign.

Photometric calibrations and characterization of the 4K$\times$4K CCD Imager, the first-light axial port instrument for the 3.6m DOT

In the present work, recent characterization results of the 4K$\times$4K CCD Imager (a first light instrument of the 3.6m Devasthal Optical Telescope; DOT) and photometric calibrations are discussed, along with measurements of the extinction coefficients and sky brightness values at the location of the 3.6m DOT site based on the imaging data taken between 2016 and 2021. For the 4K$\times$4K CCD Imager, all given combinations of gains (1, 2, 3, 5, and 10 e$^-$/ADU) and readout noise values for the three readout speeds (100 kHz, 500 kHz, and 1 MHz) are verified using the sky flats and bias frames taken during early 2021; measured values resemble well with the theoretical ones. Using color-color and color-magnitude transformation equations, color coefficients ($α$) and zero-points ($β$) are determined to constrain and examine their long-term consistencies and any possible evolution based on $UBVRI$ observations of several Landolt standard fields observed during 2016-2021. Our present analysis exhibits consistency among estimated $α$ values within the 1$σ$ and does not show any noticeable trend with time. We also found that the photometric errors and limiting magnitudes computed using the CCD Imager data follow the simulated ones published earlier. The average extinction coefficients, their seasonal variations, and zenith night-sky brightness values for the moon-less nights for all ten Bessell and SDSS filters are also estimated and found comparable to those reported for other good astronomical sites.

CCR and CAR flows over convex cones

Recently it is proved in arXiv:1906.05493v1 [math.OA] that CCR flows over convex cones are cocycle conjugate if and only if the associated isometric representations are conjugate. We provide a very short, simple and direct proof of that. Using the same idea we prove the analogous statement for CAR flows as well. Further we show that CCR flows are not cocycle conjugate to the CAR flows when the (multi-parameter) isometric representation is `proper', a condition which is satisfied by all known examples.

Infinite Mode Quantum Gaussian States

Quantum Gaussian states on Bosonic Fock spaces are quantum versions of Gaussian distributions. In this paper, we explore infinite mode quantum Gaussian states. We extend many of the results of Parthasarathy in \cite{Par10} and \cite{Par13} to the infinite mode case, which includes various characterizations, convexity and symmetry properties.

VHE Gamma-ray Observation of Crab Nebula with HAGAR Telescope Array

HAGAR is a system of seven Non-imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes located at Hanle in the Ladakh region of the Indian Himalayas at an altitude of 4270 meters {\it amsl}. Since 2008, we have observed the Crab Nebula to assess the performance of the HAGAR telescopes. We describe the analysis technique for the estimation of $γ$-ray signal amidst cosmic ray background. The consolidated results spanning nine years of the Crab nebula observations show long term performance of the HAGAR telescopes. Based on about 219 hours of data, we report the detection of $γ$-rays from the Crab Nebula at a significance level of about 20$σ$, corresponding to a time averaged flux of (1.64$\pm$0.09) $\times10^{-10}$ photons cm$^{-2}$ sec$^{-1}$ above 230 GeV. Also, we perform a detailed study of possible systematic effects in our analysis method on data taken with the HAGAR telescopes.

E-semigroups over closed convex cones

We initiate a study of E-semigroups over convex cones. We prove a structure theorem for E-semigroups which leave the algebra of compact operators invariant. Then we study in detail the CCR flows, E$_0$semigroups constructed from isometric representations, by describing their units and gauge groups. We exhibit an uncountable family of $2-$parameter CCR flows, containing mutually non-cocycle-conjugate E$_0$-$semigroups.

Modeling of eddy current distribution in the SST-1 tokamak

The time varying currents in the Ohmic transformer in the SST-1 tokamak induce voltages that drive large eddy currents in the passive structures like the vacuum vessel and cryostat. Since the vacuum vessel and the cryostat are toroidally continuous without electrical breaks in SST- 1, this leads to a shielding effect on the flux penetrating the vacuum vessel. This reduces the magnitude of the loop voltage seen by the plasma as also delays its buildup. Also the induced currents alter the null location of magnetic field. This will have serious implications on the plasma breakdown and startup and corrective measures may be required in case of an insufficient loop voltage or an improper null. Further, the eddy currents distribution will be vital for the plasma equilibrium and need to be considered while reconstructing the equilibrium. Evolution of the toroidal eddy currents in SST-1 passive structures has been studied using a toroidal-filament model. The model calculations are compared with the measured signals in the magnetic diagnostics like the toroidal flux loops and magnetic pick-up coils installed on the SST-1.

First-light instrument for the 3.6m DOT: 4Kx4K CCD Imager

As an in-house instrument developmental activity at ARIES, the 4Kx4K CCD Imager is designed and developed as a first-light instrument for the axial port of the 3.6m DOT. The f/9 beam of the telescope having a plate-scale of ~ 6.4 arc-sec/mm is utilized to conduct deeper photometry within the central 10 arc-min field of view. The pixel size of the blue-enhanced liquid Nitrogen cooled STA4150 4Kx4K CCD chip is 15 micron, with options to select gain and speed values to utilize the dynamic range. Using the Imager, it is planned to image the central ~ 6.5x6.5 arc-min^2 field of view of the telescope for various science goals by getting deeper images in several broad-band filters for point sources and objects with low surface brightness. The fully assembled Imager along with automated filter wheels having Bessel UBVRI and SDSS ugriz filters was tested in late 2015 at the axial port of the 3.6m DOT. This instrument was finally mounted at the axial port of the 3.6m DOT on 30th March 2016 when the telescope was technically activated jointly by the Prime Ministers of India and Belgium. This instrument is expected to serve as a general purpose multi-band deep imaging instrument for variety of science goals including studies of cosmic transients, active galaxies, star clusters and optical monitoring of X-ray sources discovered by the newly launched Indian space-mission called ASTROSAT and follow-up of radio bright objects discovered by the GMRT.

Non-cocycle-conjugate $E_0$-semigroups on factors

We investigate $E_0-$semigroups on general factors, which are not necessarily of type I, and analyse associated invariants like product systems, super product systems etc. By tensoring $E_0-$semigroups on type I factors with $E_0-$semigroups on type II$_1$ factor, we produce several families (both countable and uncountable), consisting of mutually non-cocycle-conjugate of $E_0-$semigroups on the hyperfinite II$_\infty$ factor. Using CCR representations associated with quasi-free states, we construct for the first time, uncountable families consisting of mutually non-cocycle-conjugate $E_0-$semigroups on all type III$_λ$ factors, for $λ\in (0,1]$.

Greenland Telescope Project --- Direct Confirmation of Black Hole with Sub-millimeter VLBI

A 12-m diameter radio telescope will be deployed to the Summit Station in Greenland to provide direct confirmation of a Super Massive Black Hole (SMBH) by observing its shadow image in the active galaxy M87. The telescope (Greenland Telescope: GLT) is to become one of the Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) stations at sub-millimeter (submm) regime, providing the longest baseline > 9,000 km to achieve an exceptional angular resolution of 20 micro arc sec at 350 GHz, which will enable us to resolve the shadow size of ~40 micro arc sec. The triangle with the longest baselines formed by the GLT, the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile, and the Submillimeter Array (SMA) in Hawaii will play a key role for the M87 observations. We have been working on the image simulations based on realistic conditions for a better understanding of the possible observed images. In parallel, retrofitting of the telescope and the site developments are in progress. Based on three years of opacity monitoring at 225 GHz, our measurements indicate that the site is excellent for submm observations, comparable to the ALMA site. The GLT is also expected to make single-dish observations up to 1.5 THz.

Extendable endomorphisms on factors

We begin this note with a von Neumann algebraic version of the elementary but extremely useful fact about being able to extend inner-product preserving maps from a total set of the domain Hilbert space to an isometry defined on the entire domain. This leads us to the notion of when `good' endomorphisms of a factorial probability space $(M,ϕ)$ (which we call equi-modular) admit a natural extension to endomorphisms of $L^2(M,ϕ)$. We exhibit examples of such extendable endomorphisms. We then pass to $E_0$-semigroups $α= {α_t: t \geq 0}$ of factors, and observe that extendability of this semigroup (i.e., extendability of each $α_t$) is a cocycle-conjugacy invariant of the semigroup. We identify a necessary condition for extendability of such an $E_0$-semigroup, which we then use to show that the Clifford flow on the hyperfinite $II_1$ factor is not extendable.

Invariants for E_0-semigroups on II_1 factors

We introduce four new cocycle conjugacy invariants for E_0-semigroups on II_1 factors: a coupling index, a dimension for the gauge group, a super product system and a C*-semiflow. Using noncommutative Itô integrals we show that the dimension of the gauge group can be computed from the structure of the additive cocycles. We do this for the Clifford flows and even Clifford flows on the hyperfinite II_1 factor, and for the free flows on the free group factor $L(F_\infty)$. In all cases the index is 0, which implies they have trivial gauge groups. We compute the super product systems for these families and, using this, we show they have trivial coupling index. Finally, using the C*-semiflow and the boundary representation of Powers and Alevras, we show that the families of Clifford flows and even Clifford flows contain infinitely many mutually non-cocycle-conjugate E_0-semigroups.

Hilbert von Neumann modules

We introduce a way of regarding Hilbert von Neumann modules as spaces of operators between Hilbert space, not unlike [Skei], but in an apparently much simpler manner and involving far less machinery. We verify that our definition is equivalent to that of [Skei], by verifying the `Riesz lemma' or what is called `self-duality' in [Skei]. An advantage with our approach is that we can totally side-step the need to go through $C^*$-modules and avoid the two stages of completion - first in norm, then in the strong operator topology - involved in the former approach. We establish the analogue of the Stinespring dilation theorem for Hilbert von Neumann bimodules, and we develop our version of `internal tensor products' which we refer to as Connes fusion for obvious reasons. In our discussion of examples, we examine the bimodules arising from automorphisms of von Neumann algebras, verify that fusion of bimodules corresponds to composition of automorphisms in this case, and that the isomorphism class of such a bimodule depends only on the inner conjugacy class of the automorphism. We also relate Jones' basic construction to the Stinespring dilation associated to the conditional expectation onto a finite-index inclusion (by invoking the uniqueness assertion regarding the latter).

Statistical Modelling of ft to Process Parameters in 30 nm Gate Length Finfets

This paper investigates the effect of process variations on unity gain frequency (ft) in 30 nm gate length FinFET by performing extensive TCAD simulations. Six different geometrical parameters, channel doping, source/drain doping and gate electrode work function are studied for their sensitivity on ft. It is found that ft is more sensitive to gate length, underlap, gate-oxide thickness, channel and Source/Drain doping and less sensitive to source/drain width and length, and work function variations. Statistical modelling has been performed for ft through design of experiment with respect to sensitive parameters. The model has been validated through a comparison between random set of experimental data simulations and predicted values obtained from the model.

Toeplitz CAR flows and type I factorizations

Toeplitz CAR flows are a class of E_0-semigroups including the first type III example constructed by R. T. Powers. We show that the Toeplitz CAR flows contain uncountably many mutually non cocycle conjugate E_0-semigroups of type III. We also generalize the type III criterion for Toeplitz CAR flows employed by Powers (and later refined by W. Arveson), and show that Toeplitz CAR flows are always either of type I or type III.

Generalized CCR Flows

We introduce a new construction of $E_0$-semigroups, called generalized CCR flows, with two kinds of descriptions: those arising from sum systems and those arising from pairs of $C_0$-semigroups. We get a new necessary and sufficient condition for them to be of type III, when the associated sum system is of finite index. Using this criterion, we construct examples of type III $E_0$-semigroups, which can not be distinguished from $E_0$-semigroups of type I by the invariants introduced by Boris Tsirelson. Finally, by considering the local von Neumann algebras, and by associating a type III factor to a given type III $E_0$-semigroup, we show that there exist uncountably many type III $E_0$-semigroups in this family, which are mutually non-cocycle conjugate.

On Product Systems arising from Sum Systems

Boris Tsirelson constructed an uncountable family of type III product systems of Hilbert spaces through the theory of Gausian spaces, measure type spaces and `slightly coloured noises', using techniques from probability theory. Here we take a purely functional analytic approach and try to have a better understanding of Tsireleson's construction and his examples. We prove an extension of Shale's theorem connecting symplectic group and Weyl representation. We show that the `Shale map' respects compositions (This settles an old conjecture of K. R. Parthasarathy). Using this we associate a product system to a sum system. This construction includes the exponential product system of Arveson, as a trivial case, and the type III examples of Tsirelson. By associating a von Neumann algebra to every `elementary set' in [0,1], in a much simpler and direct way, we arrive at the invariants of the product system introduced by Tsirelson, given in terms of the sum system. Then we introduce a notion of divisibility for a sum system, and prove that the examples of Tsirelson are divisible. It is shown that only type I and type III product systems arise out of divisible sum systems. Finally, we give a sufficient condition for a divisible sum system to give rise to a unitless (type III) product system.
