Local singlets, frustration, and unconventional superconductivity in the organic charge-transfer solids

We suggest that superconductivity (SC) in the organic charge transfer solids (CTS) is reached from a Bond-Charge Density Wave (BCDW). We discuss an effective model for the BCDW to SC transition, an attractive U extended Hubbard Hamiltonian with repulsive nearest neighbor interaction V. We discuss experimental consequences of the theory for different classes of CTS superconductors as well as related inorganic materials.

From valence bond solid to unconventional superconductivity in the organic charge-transfer solids

We show that superconductivity is absent within the 1/2-filled band triangular lattice repulsive Hubbard model that has been proposed for organic charge-transfer solids. We posit that organic superconductivity is rather reached from a Bond-Charge Density Wave that either constitutes the insulating state proximate to superconductivity, or is extremely close in energy to the antiferromagnetic state, and replaces the latter under pressure. The Bond-Charge Density Wave can be described within an effective attractive $U$ extended Hubbard Hamiltonian with repulsive nearest neighbor interaction $V$. A first-order transition from the insulating to the superconducting state occurs within the model with increasing frustration.

Absence of superconductivity in the half-filled band Hubbard model on the anisotropic triangular lattice

We report exact calculations of magnetic and superconducting pair-pair correlations for the half-filled band Hubbard model on an anisotropic triangular lattice. Our results for the magnetic phases are similar to those obtained with other techniques. The superconducting pair-pair correlations at distances beyond nearest neighbor decrease monotonically with increasing Hubbard interaction U for all anisotropy, indicating the absence of frustration-driven superconductivity within the model.

Quantum critical transition from charge-ordered to superconducting state in the triangular lattice negative-U extended Hubbard model

We demonstrate a robust frustration-driven charge-order to superconductivity transition in the half-filled negative-U extended Hubbard model. Superconductivity extends over a broad region of the parameter space. We argue that the model provides the correct insight to understanding unconventional superconductivity in the organic charge-transfer solids and other quarter-filled systems.

Infrared Investigation of the Charge Ordering Pattern in the Organic Spin Ladder Candidate (DTTTF)2Cu(mnt)2

We measured the variable temperature infrared response of the spin ladder candidate (DTTTF)2Cu(mnt)2 in order to distinguish between two competing ladder models, rectangular versus zigzag, proposed for this family of materials. The distortion along the stack direction below 235 K is consistent with a doubling along b through the metal-insulator transition. While this would agree with either of the ladder models, the concomitant transverse distortion rules out the rectangular ladder model and supports the zigzag scenario. Intramolecular distortions within the DTTTF building block molecule also give rise to on-site charge asymmetry.

Temperature-driven transition from the Wigner Crystal to the Bond-Charge-Density Wave in the Quasi-One-Dimensional Quarter-Filled band

It is known that within the interacting electron model Hamiltonian for the one-dimensional 1/4-filled band, the singlet ground state is a Wigner crystal only if the nearest neighbor electron-electron repulsion is larger than a critical value. We show that this critical nearest neighbor Coulomb interaction is different for each spin subspace, with the critical value decreasing with increasing spin. As a consequence, with the lowering of temperature, there can occur a transition from a Wigner crystal charge-ordered state to a spin-Peierls state that is a Bond-Charge-Density Wave with charge occupancies different from the Wigner crystal. This transition is possible because spin excitations from the spin-Peierls state in the 1/4-filled band are necessarily accompanied by changes in site charge densities. We apply our theory to the 1/4-filled band quasi-one-dimensional organic charge-transfer solids in general and to 2:1 tetramethyltetrathiafulvalene (TMTTF) and tetramethyltetraselenafulvalene (TMTSF) cationic salts in particular. We believe that many recent experiments strongly indicate the Wigner crystal to Bond-Charge-Density Wave transition in several members of the TMTTF family. We explain the occurrence of two different antiferromagnetic phases but a single spin-Peierls state in the generic phase diagram for the 2:1 cationic solids. The antiferromagnetic phases can have either the Wigner crystal or the Bond-Charge-Spin-Density Wave charge occupancies. The spin-Peierls state is always a Bond-Charge-Density Wave.

Phase diagram of the one dimensional Hubbard-Holstein Model at 1/2 and 1/4 filling

The Hubbard-Holstein model is one of the simplest to incorporate both electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions. In one dimension at half filling the Holstein electron-phonon coupling promotes onsite pairs of electrons and a Peierls charge density wave while the Hubbard onsite Coulomb repulsion U promotes antiferromagnetic correlations and a Mott insulating state. Recent numerical studies have found a possible third intermediate phase between Peierls and Mott states. From direct calculations of charge and spin susceptibilities, we show that (i) As the electron-phonon coupling is increased, first a spin gap opens, followed by the Peierls transition. Between these two transitions the metallic intermediate phase has a spin gap, no charge gap, and properties similar to the negative-U Hubbard model. (ii) The transitions between Mott/intermediate and intermediate/Peierls states are of the Kosterlitz-Thouless form. (iii) For larger U the two transitions merge at a tritical point into a single first order Mott/Peierls transition. In addition we show that an intermediate phase also occurs in the quarter-filled model.

Intermediate phase of the one dimensional half-filled Hubbard-Holstein model

We present a detailed numerical study of the Hubbard-Holstein model in one dimension at half filling, including full finite-frequency quantum phonons. At half filling, the effects of the electron-phonon and electron-electron interactions compete, with the Holstein phonon coupling acting as an effective negative Hubbard onsite interaction U that promotes on-site electron pairs and a Peierls charge-density wave state. Most previous work on this model has assumed that only Peierls or U>0 Mott insulator phases are possible at half filling. However, there has been speculation that a third metallic phase exists between the Peierls and Mott phases. We present results confirming the intermediate metallic phase, and show that the Luttinger liquid correlation exponent K_rho>1 in this region, indicating dominant superconducting pair correlations. We explore the full phase diagram as a function of onsite Hubbard U, phonon coupling constant, and phonon frequency.

Magnetism in BEDT-TTF materials

Strong commensurate antiferromagnetism proximate to superconductivity is found in some members of the kappa-(ET) family, while a spin gap (SG) is found in the theta-(ET). Both kappa- and theta-(ET) materials have frustrated triangular lattice structures. We show from calculations of spin-spin correlations within the effective half-filled band triangular lattice proposed for the kappa-ET, as well as for the real lattice, that long range AFM order is not obtained as a consequence of this frustration. We argue that some other mechanism reduces the magnetic frustration in these systems. We show that the low temperature magnetic states in these materials can only be understood if the effects of the {\it cooperative} charge and bond ordering transitions occurring at higher temperatures in these systems are taken into account. In the kappa-ET, this co-operative transition leads to unequal hole populations on the ET dimers that form the triangular lattice.

Co-operative density wave and giant spin gap in the quarter-filled zigzag ladder

Strong co-operative interactions occur between four different broken symmetries involving charge-ordering and bond distortions in the quarter-filled correlated zigzag electron ladder. The ground state is singlet, with spin gap several times larger than in the spin-Peierls state of the one-dimensional quarter-filled chain with the same parameters. We propose the quarter-filled zigzag electron ladder model for several different organic charge-transfer solids with coupled pairs of quasi-one-dimensional stacks, the spin-gap transition temperatures in which are unusually high.

Rung-singlet charge-ordering in alpha'-NaV2O5

We show that the proposed zig--zag charge--ordering model for alpha'--NaV2O5 is incompatible with a single transition that induces both charge--ordering and spin gap. We introduce a two--band model for alpha'--NaV2O5 within which the simultaneous charge--spin order transition is driven principally by electron-phonon interactions. The spin gap is due to the formation of local dimers, thus explaining the weak magnetic effect on this transition.

The pattern of the charge ordering in quasi-one- and two-dimensional organic charge transfer solids

We examine critically two different recently proposed models of charge ordering in the nominally 1/4-filled organic charge transfer solids (CTS). In one dimension, the two models are characterized by site charge densities of the form ...1010... and ...1100..., respectively. We establish the following theoretical results: 1) there exists a critical nearest-neighbor Coulomb interaction (V_c > 2|t|) only above which does the ...1010... state become the ground state; 2) Hartree-Fock mean field theory predicts V_c incorrectly; 3) accurate quantum Monte Carlo calculations indicate that V_c increases with decreasing U; 4) for sufficiently strong e-ph interactions, the ...1010... state can undergo a spin-Peierls (SP) transition; 5) for V < V_c, in the presence of e-ph interactions, the ...1100... CO state is the ground state and also undergoes a SP transition. We show that experimental observations clearly indicate the ...1100... CO in the 1:2 anionic CTS and the (TMTSF)_2X class of materials, while the results for (TMTTF)_2X with narrower one-electron bandwidths are more ambiguous. In two dimensions, we focus on the theta-(BEDT-TTF)_2X materials, and establish that the CO pattern there corresponds to the so-called horizontal stripe structure, with ...1100... CO along the two directions with larger electron hopping. We give precise explanations of the observed spontaneous bond distortions in the c-direction of theta-(BEDT-TTF)_2X at the metal-insulator transition and also show that the appearance of the spin gap at lower temperatures is a true two-dimensional effect different from the usual SP transition. Superconductivity in the charge transfer solids appears to be limited to the class of materials which exhibits the ...1100... CO in the insulating phase.

The ubiquitous 1100 charge ordering in organic charge-transfer solids

Charge and spin-orderings in the 1/4-filled organic CT solids are of strong interest, especially in view of their possible relations to organic superconductivity. We show that the charge order (CO) in both 1D and 2D CT solids is of the ...1100... type, in contradiction to mean field prediction of >...1010... CO. We present detailed computations for metal-insulator and magnetic insulator-insulator transitions in the theta-ET materials. Complete agreement with experiments in several theta systems is found. Similar comparisons between theory and experiments in TCNQ, TMTTF, TMTSF, and ET materials prove the ubiquity of this phenomenon.

Charge ordering in theta-(BEDT-TTF)_2 X materials

We investigate theoretically charge ordered states on the anisotropic triangular lattice characteristic of the theta-(BEDT-TTF)_2 X materials. Using exact diagonalization studies, we establish that the charge order (CO) pattern corresponds to a ``horizontal'' stripe structure, with ...1100... CO along the two directions with larger electron hopping (p-directions), and ...1010... CO along the third direction (c-direction). The CO is accompanied by co-operative bond dimerizations along all three directions in the highest spin state. In the lowest spin state bonds along the p-directions are tetramerized. Our theory explains the occurence of a charge-induced high temperature transition as well as a spin gap transition at lower temperature.

Dimensionality dependence of optical nonlinearity and relaxation dynamics in cuprates

Femtosecond pump-probe measurements find pronounced dimensionality dependence of the optical nonlinearity in cuprates. Although the coherent two-photon absorption (TPA) and linear absorption bands nearly overlap in both quasi-one and two-dimensional (1D and 2D) cuprates, the TPA coefficient is one order of magnitude smaller in 2D than in 1D. Furthermore, picosecond recovery of optical transparency is observed in 1D cuprates, while the recovery in 2D involves relaxation channels with a time scales of tens of picoseconds. The experimental results are interpreted within the two-band extended Hubbard model.

Bond and charge density waves in the isotropic interacting two-dimensional quarter-filled band and the insulating state proximate to organic superconductivity

We report two surprising results regarding the nature of the spatial broken symmetries in the two-dimensional (2D), quarter-filled band with strong electron-electron interactions. First, in direct contradiction to the predictions of one-electron theory, we find a coexisting ``bond-order and charge density wave'' (BCDW) insulating ground state in the 2D rectangular lattice for all anisotropies, including the isotropic limit. Second, we find that the BCDW further coexists with a spin-density wave (SDW) in the range of large anisotropy. Further, in contrast to the interacting half-filled band, in the interacting quarter-filled band there are two transitions: first, a similar singlet-to-AFM/SDW transition for large anisotropy and second, an AFM/SDW-to-singlet transition at smaller anisotropy. We discuss how these theoretical results apply to the insulating states that are proximate to the superconducting states of 2:1 cationic charge-transfer solids (CTS). An important consequence of this work is the suggestion that organic superconductivity is related to the proximate Coulomb-induced BCDW, with the SDW that coexists for large anisotropies being also a consequence of the BCDW, rather than the driver of superconductivity.

Re-integerization of fractional charges in the correlated quarter-filled band

Previous work has demonstrated the existence of soliton defect states with charges +/- e/2 in the limits of zero and of infinite on-site Coulomb interactions in the one-dimensional (1D) quarter-filled band. For large but finite on-site Coulomb interaction, the low temperature 2k_F bond distortion that occurs within the 4k_F bond-distorted phase is accompanied by charge-ordering on the sites. We show that a ``re-integerization'' of the defect charge occurs in this bond-charge density wave (BCDW) state due to a ``binding'' of the fractional charges. We indicate briefly possible implications of this result for mechanisms of organic superconductivity.
