Quantum Monte Carlo Study of an Interaction-Driven Band Insulator to Metal Transition

We study the transitions from band insulator to metal to Mott insulator in the ionic Hubbard model on a two dimensional square lattice using determinant Quantum Monte Carlo. Evaluation of the temperature dependence of the conductivity demonstrates that the metallic region extends for a finite range of interaction values. The Mott phase at strong coupling is accompanied by antiferromagnetic (AF) order. Inclusion of these intersite correlations changes the phase diagram qualitatively compared to dynamical mean field theory.

Mott and Band Insulator Transitions in the Binary Alloy Hubbard Model

We use determinant Quantum Monte Carlo simulations and exact diagonalization to explore insulating behavior in the Hubbard model with a bimodal distribution of randomly positioned local site energies. From the temperature dependence of the compressibility and conductivity, we show that gapped, incompressible Mott insulating phases exist away from half filling when the variance of the local site energies is sufficiently large. The compressible regions around this Mott phase are metallic only if the density of sites with the corresponding energy exceeds the percolation threshold, but are Anderson insulators otherwise.

Exact Study of the 1D Boson Hubbard Model with a Superlattice Potential

We use Quantum Monte Carlo simulations and exact diagonalization to explore the phase diagram of the Bose-Hubbard model with an additional superlattice potential. We first analyze the properties of superfluid and insulating phases present in the hard-core limit where an exact analytic treatment is possible via the Jordan-Wigner transformation. The extension to finite on-site interaction is achieved by means of quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We determine insulator/superfluid phase diagrams as functions of the on-site repulsive interaction, superlattice potential strength, and filling, finding that insulators with fractional occupation numbers, which are present in the hard-core case, extend deep into the soft-core region. Furthermore, at integer fillings, we find that the competition between the on-site repulsion and the superlattice potential can produce a phase transition between a Mott insulator and a charge density wave insulator, with an intermediate superfluid phase. Our results are relevant to the behavior of ultracold atoms in optical superlattices which are beginning to be studied experimentally.

Effect of inhomogeneity on s-wave superconductivity in the attractive Hubbard model

Inhomogeneous s-wave superconductivity is studied in the two-dimensional, square lattice attractive Hubbard Hamiltonian using the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) mean field approximation. We find that at weak coupling, and for densities mainly below half-filling, an inhomogeneous interaction in which the on-site interaction $U_i$ takes on two values, $U_i=0, 2U$ results in a larger zero temperature pairing amplitude, and that the superconducting $T_c$ can also be significantly increased, relative to a uniform system with $U_i=U$ on all sites. These effects are observed for stripe, checkerboard, and even random patterns of the attractive centers, suggesting that the pattern of inhomogeneity is unimportant. Monte Carlo calculations which reintroduce some of the fluctuations neglected within the BdG approach see the same effect, both for the attractive Hubbard model and a Hamiltonian with d-wave pairing symmetry.

Time of flight observables and the formation of Mott domains of fermions and bosons on optical lattices

We study, using quantum Monte Carlo simulations, the energetics of the formation of Mott domains of fermions and bosons trapped on one-dimensional lattices. We show that, in both cases, the sum of kinetic and interaction energies exhibits minima when Mott domains appear in the trap. In addition, we examine the derivatives of the kinetic and interaction energies, and of their sum, which display clear signatures of the Mott transition. We discuss the relevance of these findings to time-of-flight experiments that could allow the detection of the metal--Mott-insulator transition in confined fermions on optical lattices, and support established results on the superfluid--Mott-insulator transition in confined bosons on optical lattices.

The magnetic susceptibility of exchange-disordered antiferromagnetic finite chains

The low-temperature behavior of the static magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$ of exchange-disordered antiferromagnetic spin chains is investigated. It is shown that for a relatively small and even number of spins in the chain, two exchange distributions which are expected to occur in nanochains of P donors in silicon lead to qualitatively distinct behaviors of the low-temperature susceptibility. As a consequence, magnetic measurements might be useful to characterize whether a given sample meets the requirements compatible with Kane's original proposalfor the exchange gates in a silicon-based quantum computer hardware. We also explore the dependence of $χ(T)$ on the number of spins in the chain as it increases towards the thermodynamic limit, where any degree or distribution of disorder leads to the same low-temperature scaling behavior. We identify a crossover regime where the two distributions of disorder may not be clearly differentiated, but the characteristic scaling of the thermodynamic limit has not yet been reached.

Phase coherence, visibility, and the superfluid--Mott-insulator transition on one-dimensional optical lattices

We study the phase coherence and visibility of trapped atomic condensates on one-dimensional optical lattices, by means of quantum Monte-Carlo simulations. We obtain structures in the visibility similar to the kinks recently observed experimentally by Gerbier et.al.[Phy. Rev. Lett. 95, 050404 (2005); Phys. Rev. A 72, 053606 (2005)]. We examine these features in detail and offer a connection to the evolution of the density profiles as the depth of the lattice is increased. Our simulations reveal that as the interaction strength, U, is increased, the evolution of superfluid and Mott-insulating domains stall for finite intervals of U. The density profiles do not change with increasing U. We show here that in one dimension the visibility provides unequivocal signatures of the melting of Mott domains with densities larger than one.

Comment on "Novel Superfluidity in a Trapped Gas of Fermi Atoms with Repulsive Interaction Loaded on an Optical Lattice"

In a recent letter Machida et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 200402 (2004)] concluded that in a trapped gas of fermions with repulsive interactions a superfluid phase appears around the Mott-insulator at the center of the trap. They base their conclusion on a negative binding energy, and a large weight for a singlet formed by particles located at opposite sides of the Mott-insulator. We show here that the observed effects are not related to superfluidity.

Superconductivity and Lattice Instability in Compressed Lithium from Fermi Surface Hot Spots

The highest superconducting temperature T$_c$ observed in any elemental metal (Li with T$_c$ ~ 20 K at pressure P ~ 40 GPa) is shown to arise from critical (formally divergent) electron-phonon coupling to the transverse T$_1$ phonon branch along intersections of Kohn anomaly surfaces with the Fermi surface. First principles linear response calculations of the phonon spectrum and spectral function $α^2 F(ω)$ reveal (harmonic) instability already at 25 GPa. Our results imply that the fcc phase is anharmonically stabilized in the 25-38 GPa range.

Collective Oscillations of Strongly Correlated One-Dimensional Bosons on a Lattice

We study the dipole oscillations of strongly correlated 1D bosons, in the hard-core limit, on a lattice, by an exact numerical approach. We show that far from the regime where a Mott insulator appears in the system, damping is always present and increases for larger initial displacements of the trap, causing dramatic changes in the momentum distribution, $n_k$. When a Mott insulator sets in the middle of the trap, the center of mass barely moves after an initial displacement, and $n_k$ remains very similar to the one in the ground state. We also study changes introduced by the damping in the natural orbital occupations, and the revival of the center of mass oscillations after long times.

Ring Exchange and Phase Separation in the Two-dimensional Boson Hubbard model

We present Quantum Monte Carlo simulations of the soft-core bosonic Hubbard model with a ring exchange term K. For values of K which exceed roughly half the on-site repulsion U, the density is a non-monotonic function of the chemical potential, indicating that the system has a tendency to phase separate. This behavior is confirmed by an examination of the density-density structure factor and real space images of the boson configurations. Adding a near-neighbor repulsion can compete with phase separation, but still does not give rise to a stable normal Bose liquid.

Dynamic response of trapped ultracold bosons on optical lattices

We study the dynamic response of ultracold bosons trapped in one-dimensional optical lattices using Quantum Monte Carlo simulations of the boson Hubbard model with a confining potential. The dynamic structure factor reveals the inhomogeneous nature of the low temperature state, which contains coexisting Mott insulator and superfluid regions. We present new evidence for local quantum criticality and shed new light on the experimental excitation spectrum of 87Rb atoms confined in one dimension.

Solitons in Trapped Bose-Einstein condensates in one-dimensional optical lattices

We use Quantum Monte Carlo simulations to show the presence and study the properties of solitons in the one dimensional soft-core bosonic Hubbard model with near neighbor interaction in traps. We show that when the half-filled Charge Density Wave (CDW) phase is doped, solitons are produced and quasi long range order established. We discuss the implications of these results for the presence and robustness of this solitonic phase in Bose-Einstein Condensates (BEC) on one dimensional optical lattices in traps and study the associated excitation spectrum. The density profile exhibits the coexistence of Mott insulator, CDW, and superfluid regions.

Critical Properties of an Ising Model with Dilute Long-range Interactions

Statistical mechanical models with local interactions in $d>1$ dimension can be regarded as $d=1$ dimensional models with regular long range interactions. In this paper we study the critical properties of Ising models having $V$ sites, each having $z$ randomly chosen neighbors. For $z=2$ the model reduces to the $d=1$ Ising model. For $z= \infty$ we get a mean field model. We find that for finite $z > 2$ the system has a second order phase transition characterized by a length scale $L={\rm ln}V$ and mean field critical exponents that are independent of $z$.

Ground state and finite temperature signatures of quantum phase transitions in the half-filled Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice

We investigate ground state and finite temperature properties of the half-filled Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice using quantum monte carlo and series expansion techniques. Unlike the square lattice, for which magnetic order exists at T=0 for any non-zero $U$, the honeycomb lattice is known to have a semi-metal phase at small $U$ and an antiferromagnetic one at large $U$. We investigate the phase transition at T=0 by studying the magnetic structure$and compressibility using quantum monte carlo simulations and by calculating the sublattice magnetization, uniform susceptibility, spin-wave and single hole %single-particle dispersion using series expansions around the ordered phase. Our results are consistent with a single continuous transition at $U_c/t$ in the range 4-5. Finite temperature signatures of this phase transition are seen in the behavior of the specific heat, $C(T)$, which changes from a two-peaked structure for $U>U_c$ to a one-peaked structure for $U < U_c$. Furthermore, the $U$ dependence of the low temperature coefficient of $C(T)$ exhibits an anomaly at $U \approx U_c$.

Reentrant Disordering of Colloidal Molecular Crystals on 2D Periodic Substrates

We study colloidal ordering and disordering on two-dimensional periodic substrates where the number of colloids per substrate minima is two or three. The colloids form dimer or trimer states with orientational ordering, referred to as colloidal molecular crystals. At a fixed temperature such that, in the absence of a substrate, the colloids are in a triangular floating solid state, upon increasing the substrate strength we find a transition to an ordered colloidal molecular crystal state, followed by a transition to a disordered state where the colloids still form dimers or trimers but the orientational order is lost. These results are in agreement with recent experiments.

Metastability and uniqueness of vortex states at depinning

We present results from numerical simulations of transport of vortices in the zero-field cooled (ZFC) and the field-cooled (FC) state of a type-II superconductor. In the absence of an applied current $I$, we find that the FC state has a lower defect density than the ZFC state, and is stable against thermal cycling. On the other hand, by cycling $I$, surprisingly we find that the ZFC state is the stable state. The FC state is metastable as manifested by increasing $I$ to the depinning current $I_{c}$, in which case the FC state evolves into the ZFC state. We also find that all configurations acquire a unique defect density at the depinning transition independent of the history of the initial states.

Critical temperature for the two-dimensional attractive Hubbard Model

The critical temperature for the attractive Hubbard model on a square lattice is determined from the analysis of two independent quantities, the helicity modulus, $ρ_s$, and the pairing correlation function, $P_s$. These quantities have been calculated through Quantum Monte Carlo simulations for lattices up to $18\times 18$, and for several densities, in the intermediate-coupling regime. Imposing the universal-jump condition for an accurately calculated $ρ_s$, together with thorough finite-size scaling analyses (in the spirit of the phenomenological renormalization group) of $P_s$, suggests that $T_c$ is considerably higher than hitherto assumed.
