Out-of-phase Plasmon Excitations in the Trilayer Cuprate Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{10+δ}$

Within a homologous series of cuprate superconductors, variations in the stacking of CuO$_2$ layers influence the collective charge dynamics through the long-range Coulomb interactions. We use O $K$-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering to reveal plasmon excitations in the optimally-doped trilayer Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{10+δ}$. The observed plasmon exhibits nearly $q_z$-independent dispersion and a large excitation gap of approximately 300 meV. This mode is primarily ascribed to the $ω_{-}$ mode, where the charge density on the outer CuO$_2$ sheets oscillates out of phase while the density in the inner sheet remains unaltered at $q_z=0$. The intensity of the acoustic $ω_3$ mode is relatively weak and becomes vanishingly small near $(q_x, q_y)=(0, 0)$. This result highlights a qualitative change in the eigenmode of the dominant low-energy plasmon with the number of CuO$_2$ layers.

Spectroscopic investigations on trivalent ruthenium ions in ruthenium perovskite oxide thin films

The $d^5$ electron configurations under the crystal field, spin-orbit coupling, and Coulomb interaction give rise to a plethora of profound ground states. Ruthenium perovskite oxides exhibit a number of unconventional properties yet the Ru$^{4+}$ state ($4d^4$) is usually stable in these materials. In this regard, Ru$^{3+}$ ions in perovskite materials are expected to be a mesmerising playground of $4d^5$ electron configurations. Here, we report measurements of x-ray photoemission spectroscopy on recently synthesized perovskite ruthenium oxide thin films, LaRuO$_3$ and NdRuO$_3$, whose valence state of the ruthenium ions is trivalent. We discuss correlation and spin-orbit effects from the valence-band spectra, in particular an additional peak structure around 3-5 eV, reminiscent of the so-called 3 eV peak observed in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. Moreover, we find that the core-level spectra of these materials are quantitatively different from those in other ruthenates which possess Ru$^{4+}$ ions, e.g., SrRuO$_3$. We therefore argue that the core level spectra of LaRuO$_3$ and NdRuO$_3$ are peculiar to the Ru$^{3+}$ states.

High sensitivity of a future search for P-odd/T-odd interactions on the 0.75 eV $p$-wave resonance in $\vec{n}+^{139}\vec{\rm La}$ forward transmission determined using pulsed neutron beam

Neutron transmission experiments can offer a new type of highly sensitive search for time-reversal invariance violating (TRIV) effects in nucleon-nucleon interactions via the same enhancement mechanism observed for large parity violating (PV) effects in neutron-induced compound nuclear processes. In these compound processes, the TRIV cross-section is given as the product of the PV cross-section, a spin-factor $κ$, and a ratio of TRIV and PV matrix elements. We determined $κ$ to be $0.59\pm0.05$ for $^{139}$La+$n$ using both $(n, γ)$ spectroscopy and ($\vec{n}+^{139}\vec{\rm La}$) transmission. This result quantifies for the first time the high sensitivity of the $^{139}$La 0.75~eV $p$-wave resonance in a future search for P-odd/T-odd interactions in ($\vec{n}+^{139}\vec{\rm La}$) forward transmission.

Spin dependence in the $p$-wave resonance of ${^{139}\vec{\rm{La}}+\vec{n}}$

We measured the spin dependence in a neutron-induced $p$-wave resonance by using a polarized epithermal neutron beam and a polarized nuclear target. Our study focuses on the 0.75~eV $p$-wave resonance state of $^{139}$La+$n$, where largely enhanced parity violation has been observed. We determined the partial neutron width of the $p$-wave resonance by measuring the spin dependence of the neutron absorption cross section between polarized $^{139}\rm{La}$ and polarized neutrons. Our findings serve as a foundation for the quantitative study of the enhancement effect of the discrete symmetry violations caused by mixing between partial amplitudes in the compound nuclei.

Lattice constants and magnetism of L10-ordered FePt under high pressure

We studied the relationship between the lattice constant and magnetism of L10-ordered FePt under high pressure by means of first-principles calculations and synchrotron x-ray measurements. Based on our calculations, we found that the c/a ratio shows an anomaly at ~ 20 GPa and that the Pt magnetic moment is sharply suppressed at ~ 60 GPa. As for the c/a, we experimentally verified the anomaly at ~ 20 GPa by powder x-ray diffraction. We also measured the x-ray magnetic circular dichroism at the Pt L edge up to ~ 20 GPa. Any significant change of the Pt magnetic moment was not observed, in agreement with the calculations. These results thus indicate the possibility that novel magnetic states can be created in L10-ordered FePt by lattice deformation under high pressure.

On Weak Lensing Response Functions

We introduce the response function (RFs) approach to model the weak lensing statistics in the context of separate universe formalism. Numerical results for the RFs are presented for various semi-analytical models that include perturbative modelling and variants of halo models. These results extend the recent studies of the Integrated Bispectrum (IB) and Trispectrum to arbitrary order. We find that due to the line-of-sight (los) projection effects, the expressions for RFs are not identical to the squeezed correlation functions of the same order. We compute the RFs in three-dimensions (3D) using the spherical Fourier-Bessel (sFB) formalism which provides a natural framework for incorporating photometric redshifts, and relate these expressions to tomographic and projected statistics. We generalise the concept of $k$-cut power spectrum to $k$-cut response functions. In addition to the response function for high-order spectra, we also define their counterparts in real space, since they are easier to estimate from surveys with low sky-coverage and non-trivial survey boundaries.

A New Estimator for Phase Statistics

We introduce a novel statistic to probe the statistics of phases of Fourier modes in two-dimensions (2D) for weak lensing convergence field $κ$. This statistic contains completely independent information compared to that contained in observed power spectrum. We compare our results against state-of-the-art numerical simulations as a function of source redshift and find good agreement with theoretical predictions. We show that our estimator can achieve better signal-to-noise compared to the commonly employed statistics known as the line correlation function (LCF). Being a two-point statistics, our estimator is also easy to implement in the presence of complicated noise and mask, and can also be generalised to higher-order. While applying this estimator for the study of lensed CMB maps, we show that it is important to include post-Born corrections in the study of statistics of phase.

The Weak Lensing Bispectrum Induced By Gravity

Recent studies have demonstrated that {\em secondary} non-Gaussianity induced by gravity will be detected with a high signal-to-noise (S/N) by future and even by on-going weak lensing surveys. One way to characterise such non-Gaussianity is through the detection of a non-zero three-point correlation function of the lensing convergence field, or of its harmonic transform, the bispectrum. A recent study analysed the properties of the squeezed configuration of the bispectrum, when two wavenumbers are much larger than the third one. We extend this work by estimating the amplitude of the (reduced) bispectrum in four generic configurations, i.e., {\em squeezed, equilateral, isosceles} and {\em folded}, and for four different source redshifts $z_s=0.5,1.0,1.5,2.0$, by using an ensemble of all-sky high-resolution simulations. We compare these results against theoretical predictions. We find that, while the theoretical expectations based on widely used fitting functions can predict the general trends of the reduced bispectra, a more accurate theoretical modelling will be required to analyse the next generation of all-sky weak lensing surveys. The disagreement is particularly pronounced in the squeezed limit.

10~Mb/s quantum key distribution

We report the first quantum key distribution (QKD) systems capable of delivering sustainable, real-time secure keys continuously at rates exceeding 10 Mb/s. To achieve such rates, we developed high speed post-processing modules, achieving maximum data throughputs of 60 MC/s, 55 Mb/s, and 108 Mb/s for standalone operation of sifting, error correction and privacy amplification modules, respectively. The photonic layer of the QKD systems features high-speed single photon detectors based on self-differencing InGaAs avalanche photodiodes, phase encoding using asymmetric Mach-Zehnder interferometer, and active stabilization of the interferometer phase and photon polarisation. An efficient variant of the decoy-state BB84 protocol is implemented for security analysis, with a large dataset size of $10^8$ bits selected to mitigate finite-size effects. Over a 2 dB channel, a record secure key rate of 13.72 Mb/s has been achieved averaged over 4.4 days of operation. We confirm the robustness and long-term stability on a second QKD system continuously running for 1 month without any user intervention.

A-site driven ferroelectricity in strained ferromagnetic L2NiMnO6 thin films

We report on theoretical and experimental investigation of A-site driven ferroelectricity in ferromagnetic La2NiMnO6 thin films grown on SrTiO3 substrates. Structural analysis and density functional theory calculations show that epitaxial strain stretches the rhombohedral La2NiMnO6 crystal lattice along the [111]cubic direction, triggering a displacement of the A-site La ions in the double perovskite lattice. The lattice distortion and the A-site displacements stabilize a ferroelectric polar state in ferromagnetic La2NiMnO6 crystals. The ferroelectric state only appears in the rhombohedral La2NiMnO6 phase, where MnO6 and NiO6 octahedral tilting is inhibited by the 3-fold crystal symmetry. Electron localization mapping showed that covalent bonding with oxygen and 6s orbital lone pair formation are negligible in this material.

Spin mixing conductance at a well-controlled platinum/yttrium iron garnet interface

A platinum (Pt)/yttrium iron garnet (YIG) bilayer system with a well-controlled interface has been developed; spin mixing conductance at the Pt/YIG interface has been studied. Crystal perfection at the interface is experimentally demonstrated to contribute to large spin mixing conductance. The spin mixing conductance is obtained to be $1.3\times10^{18} \rm{m^{-2}}$ at the well-controlled Pt/YIG interface, which is close to a theoretical prediction.

Pyroelectric detection of spontaneous polarization in magnetite thin films

We have investigated the spontaneous polarization in Fe$_3$O$_4$ thin films by using dynamic and static pyroelectric measurements. The magnetic and dielectric behavior of Fe$_3$O$_4$ thin films grown on Nb:SrTiO$_3$(001) substrates was consistent with bulk crystals. The well-known metal-insulator (Verwey) transition was observed at 120 K. The appearance of a pyroelectric response in the Fe$_3$O$_4$ thin films just below the Verwey temperature shows that spontaneous polarization appeared in Fe$_3$O$_4$ at the charge ordering transition temperature. The polar state characteristics are consistent with bond- and site- centered charge ordering of Fe$^{2+}$ and Fe$^{3+}$ ions sharing the octahedral $B$ sites. The pyroelectric response in Fe$_3$O$_4$ thin films was dependent on the dielectric constant. Quasi-static pyroelectric measurement of Pd/Fe$_3$O$_4$/Nb:SrTiO$_3$ junctions showed that magnetite has a very large pyroelectric coefficient of 735 nC/cm$^{2}$K at 60 K.

Measuring spin of a supermassive black hole at the Galactic centre -- Implications for a unique spin

We determine the spin of a supermassive black hole in the context of discseismology by comparing newly detected quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) of radio emission in the Galactic centre, Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), as well as infrared and X-ray emissions with those of the Galactic black holes. We find that the spin parameters of black holes in Sgr A* and in Galactic X-ray sources have a unique value of $\approx 0.44$ which is smaller than the generally accepted value for supermassive black holes, suggesting evidence for the angular momentum extraction of black holes during the growth of supermassive black holes. Our results demonstrate that the spin parameter approaches the equilibrium value where spin-up via accretion is balanced by spin-down via the Blandford-Znajek mechanism regardless of its initial spin. We anticipate that measuring the spin of black holes by using QPOs will open a new window for exploring the evolution of black holes in the Universe.

Oscillation Phenomena in the disk around the massive black hole Sagittarius A*

We report the detection of radio QPOs with structure changes using the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) at 43 GHz. We found conspicuous patterned changes of the structure with P = 16.8 +- 1.4, 22.2 +- 1.4, 31.2 +- 1.5, 56.4 +- 6 min, very roughly in a 3:4:6:10 ratio. The first two periods show a rotating one-arm structure, while the P = 31.4 min shows a rotating 3-arm structure, as if viewed edge-on. At the central 50 microasec the P = 56.4 min period shows a double amplitude variation of those in its surroundings. Spatial distributions of the oscillation periods suggest that the disk of SgrA* is roughly edge-on, rotating around an axis with PA = -10 degree. Presumably, the observed VLBI images of SgrA* at 43 GHz retain several features of the black hole accretion disk of SgrA* in spite of being obscured and broadened by scattering of surrounding plasma.

Magnetohydrodynamics of Neutrino-Cooled Accretion Tori around a Rotating Black Hole in General Relativity

We present our first numerical results of axisymmetric magnetohydrodynamic simulations for neutrino-cooled accretion tori around rotating black holes in general relativity. We consider tori of mass $\sim 0.1$--0.4$M_{\odot}$ around a black hole of mass $M=4M_{\odot}$ and spin $a=0$--$0.9M$; such systems are candidates for the central engines of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) formed after the collapse of massive rotating stellar cores and the merger of a black hole and a neutron star. In this paper, we consider the short-term evolution of a torus for a duration of $\approx 60$ ms, focusing on short-hard GRBs. Simulations were performed with a plausible microphysical equation of state that takes into account neutronization, the nuclear statistical equilibrium of a gas of free nucleons and $α$-particles, black body radiation, and a relativistic Fermi gas (neutrinos, electrons, and positrons). Neutrino-emission processes, such as $e^{\pm}$ capture onto free nucleons, $e^{\pm}$ pair annihilation, plasmon decay, and nucleon-nucleon bremsstrahlung are taken into account as cooling processes. Magnetic braking and the magnetorotational instability in the accretion tori play a role in angular momentum redistribution, which causes turbulent motion, resultant shock heating, and mass accretion onto the black hole. The mass accretion rate is found to be $\dot M_* \sim 1$--$10 M_{\odot}$/s, and the shock heating increases the temperature to $\sim 10^{11}$ K. This results in a maximum neutrino emission rate of $L_ν=$ several $\times 10^{53}$ ergs/s and a conversion efficiency $L_ν/\dot M_* c^2$ on the order of a few percent for tori with mass $M_{\rm t} \approx 0.1$--0.4$M_{\odot}$ and for moderately high black hole spins.

The effect of supersymmetry breaking in the Mass Varying Neutrinos

We discuss the effect of the supersymmetry breaking on the Mass Varying Neutrinos(MaVaNs) scenario. Especially, the effect mediated by the gravitational interaction between the hidden sector and the dark energy sector is studied. A model including a chiral superfield in the dark sector and the right handed neutrino superfield is proposed. Evolutions of the neutrino mass and the equation of state parameter are presented in the model. It is remarked that only the mass of a sterile neutrino is variable in the case of the vanishing mixing between the left-handed and a sterile neutrino on cosmological time scale. The finite mixing makes the mass of the left-handed neutrino variable.

Geometrical Effect of Supercritical Accretion Flows: Observational Implications of Galactic Black-Hole Candidates and Ultraluminous X-ray Sources

We investigate the dependence of the viewing angle in supercritical accretion flows and discuss the observational implications of galactic black-hole candidates and ultraluminous X-ray sources. When the mass accretion rate exceeds the critical rate, then the shape of the disk is geometrically thick due to the enhanced radiation pressure. The model spectra of supercritical accretion flows strongly depend on the inclination angle. Because the outer disk blocks the emission from the disk inner region for high inclination angle. We also find that the spectral properties of low-inclination angle and low accretion-rate disks are very similar to those of high-inclination and high accretion rate disks. That is, if an object has a high inclination and high accretion rate, such a system suffers from self-occultation and the spectrum will be extremely soft. Therefore, we cannot discriminate these differences from spectrum shapes only. Conversely, if we use the self-occultation properties, we could constrain the inclination angle of the system. We suggest that some observed high temperature ultraluminous X-ray sources have near face-on geometry, i < 40, and Galactic black hole candidate, XTE J1550-564, possesses relatively high-inclination angles, i > 60.

The coalescence remnant of spinning binary black holes

We compute the gravitational radiation generated in the evolution of a family of close binary black hole configurations, using a combination of numerical and perturbative approximation methods. We evolve the binaries with spins, $s$, aligned or counter-aligned with the orbital angular momentum from near the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) down to the final single rotating black hole. For the moderately spinning holes studied here the remnant Kerr black hole formed at the end of an inspiral process have a rotation parameter $a/M\approx0.72+0.32(s/m_H)$, suggesting it is difficult (though not excluded) to end up with near maximally rotating holes from such scenarios.
