A free boundary problem associated with the isoperimetric inequality

This paper proves a 30 year old conjecture that disks and annuli are the only domains where analytic content - the uniform distance from $\bar{z}$ to analytic functions - achieves its lower bound. This problem is closely related to several well-known free boundary problems, in particular, Serrin's problem about laminar flow of incompressible viscous fluid for multiply-connected domains, and Garabedian's problem on the shape of electrified droplets. Some further ramifications and open questions, including extensions to higher dimensions, are also discussed.

Lemniscates do not survive Laplacian growth

The large class of moving boundary processes in the plane modeled by the so-called Laplacian growth, which describes, e.g., solidification, electrodeposition, viscous fingering, bacterial growth, etc., is known to be integrable and to exhibit a large number of exact solutions. In this work, the boundaries are assumed to be in the class of lemniscates with all zeros inside the bounded component of the complex plane. We prove that for any initial boundary taken from this class, the evolving boundary instantly stops being in the class, or else Laplacian growth destroys lemniscates instantly.

Unstable fingering patterns of Hele-Shaw flows as a dispersionless limit of the KdV hierarchy

We show that unstable fingering patterns of two dimensional flows of viscous fluids with open boundary are described by a dispersionless limit of the KdV hierarchy. In this framework, the fingering instability is linked to a known instability leading to regularized shock solutions for nonlinear waves, in dispersive media. The integrable structure of the flow suggests a dispersive regularization of the finite-time singularities.

Semiclassical evolution of the spectral curve in the normal random matrix ensemble as Whitham hierarchy

We continue the analysis of the spectral curve of the normal random matrix ensemble, introduced in an earlier paper. Evolution of the full quantum curve is given in terms of compatibility equations of independent flows. The semiclassical limit of these flows is expressed through canonical differential forms of the spectral curve. We also prove that the semiclassical limit of the evolution equations is equivalent to Whitham hierarchy.

Normal random matrix ensemble as a growth problem

In general or normal random matrix ensembles, the support of eigenvalues of large size matrices is a planar domain (or several domains) with a sharp boundary. This domain evolves under a change of parameters of the potential and of the size of matrices. The boundary of the support of eigenvalues is a real section of a complex curve. Algebro-geometrical properties of this curve encode physical properties of random matrix ensembles. This curve can be treated as a limit of a spectral curve which is canonically defined for models of finite matrices. We interpret the evolution of the eigenvalue distribution as a growth problem, and describe the growth in terms of evolution of the spectral curve. We discuss algebro-geometrical properties of the spectral curve and describe the wave functions (normalized characteristic polynomials) in terms of differentials on the curve. General formulae and emergence of the spectral curve are illustrated by three meaningful examples.
