Thermostatistics of extensive and non-extensive systems using generalized entropies

We describe in detail two numerical simulation methods valid to study systems whose thermostatistics is described by generalized entropies, such as Tsallis. The methods are useful for applications to non-trivial interacting systems with a large number of degrees of freedom, and both short-range and long-range interactions. The first method is quite general and it is based on the numerical evaluation of the density of states with a given energy. The second method is more specific for Tsallis thermostatistics and it is based on a standard Monte Carlo Metropolis algorithm along with a numerical integration procedure. We show here that both methods are robust and efficient. We present results of the application of the methods to the one-dimensional Ising model both in a short-range case and in a long-range (non-extensive) case. We show that the thermodynamic potentials for different values of the system size N and different values of the non-extensivity parameter q can be described by scaling relations which are an extension of the ones holding for the Boltzmann-Gibbs statistics (q=1). Finally, we discuss the differences in using standard or non-standard mean value definitions in the Tsallis thermostatistics formalism and present a microcanonical ensemble calculation approach of the averages.

Synchronization of Chaotic Systems by Common Random Forcing

We show two examples of noise--induced synchronization. We study a 1-d map and the Lorenz systems, both in the chaotic region. For each system we give numerical evidence that the addition of a (common) random noise, of large enough intensity, to different trajectories which start from different initial conditions, leads eventually to the perfect synchronization of the trajectories. The largest Lyapunov exponent becomes negative due to the presence of the noise terms.

Period Stabilization in the Busse-Heikes Model of the Kuppers-Lortz Instability

The Busse-Heikes dynamical model is described in terms of relaxational and nonrelaxational dynamics. Within this dynamical picture a diverging alternating period is calculated in a reduced dynamics given by a time-dependent Hamiltonian with decreasing energy. A mean period is calculated which results from noise stabilization of a mean energy. The consideration of spatial-dependent amplitudes leads to vertex formation. The competition of front motion around the vertices and the Kuppers-Lortz instability in determining an alternating period is discussed.

Nonequilibrium phase transitions induced by multiplicative noise: effects of self-correlation

A recently introduced lattice model, describing an extended system which exhibits a reentrant (symmetry-breaking, second-order) noise-induced nonequilibrium phase transition, is studied under the assumption that the multiplicative noise leading to the transition is colored. Within an effective Markovian approximation and a mean-field scheme it is found that when the self-correlation time of the noise is different from zero, the transition is also reentrant with respect to the spatial coupling D. In other words, at variance with what one expects for equilibrium phase transitions, a large enough value of D favors disorder. Moreover, except for a small region in the parameter subspace determined by the noise intensity and D, an increase in the self-correlation time usually preventsthe formation of an ordered state. These effects are supported by numerical simulations.

Selfsimilar Domain Growth, Localized Structures and Labyrinthine Patterns in Vectorial Kerr Resonators

We study domain growth in a nonlinear optical system useful to explore different scenarios that might occur in systems which do not relax to thermodynamic equilibrium. Domains correspond to equivalent states of different circular polarization of light. We describe three dynamical regimes: a coarsening regime in which dynamical scaling holds with a growth law dictated by curvature effects, a regime in which localized structures form, and a regime in which polarization domain walls are modulationally unstable and the system freezes in a labyrinthine pattern.

Scaling functions for Tsallis non--extensive statistics

We study the one-dimensional Ising model with long-range interactions in the context of Tsallis non-extensive statistics by computing numerically the number of states with a given energy. We find that the internal energy, magnetization, entropy and free energy follow non-trivial scaling laws with the number of constituents $N$ and temperature $T$. Each of the scaling functions for the internal energy, the magnetization and the free energy, adopts three different forms corresponding to $q>1$, $q=1$ and $q<1$, being $q$ the non-extensivity parameter of Tsallis statistics.

Noise-Induced Phase Separation: Mean-Field Results

We present a study of a phase-separation process induced by the presence of spatially-correlated multiplicative noise. We develop a mean-field approach suitable for conserved-order-parameter systems and use it to obtain the phase diagram of the model. Mean-field results are compared with numerical simulations of the complete model in two dimensions. Additionally, a comparison between the noise-driven dynamics of conserved and nonconserved systems is made at the level of the mean-field approximation.

Noise induced transition from an absorbing phase to a regime of stochastic spatiotemporal intermittency

We introduce a stochastic partial differential equation capable of reproducing the main features of spatiotemporal intermittency (STI). Additionally the model displays a noise induced transition from laminarity to the STI regime. We show by numerical simulations and a mean-field analysis that for high noise intensities the system globally evolves to a uniform absorbing phase, while for noise intensities below a critical value spatiotemporal intermittence dominates. A quantitative computation of the loci of this transition in the relevant parameter space is presented.

Fronts, Domain Growth and Dynamical Scaling in a d=1 non-Potential System

We present a study of dynamical scaling and front motion in a one dimensional system that describes Rayleigh-Benard convection in a rotating cell. We use a model of three competing modes proposed by Busse and Heikes to which spatial dependent terms have been added. As long as the angular velocity is different from zero, there is no known Lyapunov potential for the dynamics of the system. As a consequence the system follows a non-relaxational dynamics and the asymptotic state can not be associated with a final equilibrium state. When the rotation angular velocity is greater than some critical value, the system undergoes the Kuppers-Lortz instability leading to a time dependent chaotic dynamics and there is no coarsening beyond this instability. We have focused on the transient dynamics below this instability, where the dynamics is still non-relaxational. In this regime the dynamics is governed by a non-relaxational motion of fronts separating dynamically equivalent homogeneous states. We classify the families of fronts that occur in the dynamics, and calculate their shape and velocity. We have found that a scaling description of the coarsening process is still valid as in the potential case. The growth law is nearly logarithmic with time for short times and becomes linear after a crossover, whose width is determined by the strength of the non-potential terms.

Simulated Annealing using Hybrid Monte Carlo

We propose a variant of the Simulated Annealing method for optimization in the multivariate analysis of differentiable functions. The method uses global actualizations via the Hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm in their generalized version for the proposal of new configurations. We show how this choice can improve upon the performance of simulated annealing methods (mainly when the number of variables is large) by allowing a more effective searching scheme and a faster annealing schedule.

Disordering effects of color in nonequilibrium phase transitions induced by multiplicative noise

The model introduced by Van den Broeck, Parrondo and Toral [Phys. Rev. Lett.73, 3395 (1994)] -- leading to a second-order-like noise-induced nonequilibrium phase transition which shows reentrance as a function of the (multiplicative) noise intensity $σ$-- is investigated beyond the white-noise assumption. Through a Markovian approximation and within a mean-field treatment it is found that -- in striking contrast with the usual behavior for equilibrium phase transitions -- for noise self-correlation time $τ>0$, the stable phase for (diffusive) spatial coupling $D\to\infty$ is always the disordered one. Another surprising result is that a large noise "memory" also tends to destroy order. These results are supported by numerical simulations.

Phase Separation Driven by External Fluctuations

The influence of external fluctuations in phase separation processes is analysed. These fluctuations arise from random variations of an external control parameter. A linear stability analysis of the homogeneous state shows that phase separation dynamics can be induced by external noise. The spatial structure of the noise is found to have a relevant role in this phenomenon. Numerical simulations confirm these results. A comparison with order-disorder noise induced phase transitions is also made.
