Unlimited growth of particle fluctuations in many-body localized phases

We study quench dynamics in a t-V chain of spinless fermions (equivalent to the spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain) with strong potential disorder. For this prototypical model of many-body localization we have recently argued that -- contrary to the established picture -- particles do not become fully localized. Here we summarize and expand on our previous results for various entanglement measures such as the number and the Hartley number entropy. We investigate, in particular, possible alternative interpretations of our numerical data. We find that none of these alternative interpretations appears to hold and, in the process, discover further strong evidence for the absence of localization. Furthermore, we obtain more insights into the entanglement dynamics and the particle fluctuations by comparing with non-interacting systems where we derive several strict bounds. We find that renormalized versions of these bounds also hold in the interacting case where they provide support for numerically discovered scaling relations between number and entanglement entropies.

Absence of topology in Gaussian mixed states of bosons

In a recent paper [Bardyn et al. Phys. Rev. X 8, 011035 (2018)], it was shown that the generalization of the many-body polarization to mixed states can be used to construct a topological invariant which is also applicable to finite-temperature and non-equilibrium Gaussian states of lattice fermions. The many-body polarization defines an ensemble geometric phase (EGP) which is identical to the Zak phase of a fictitious Hamiltonian, whose symmetries determine the topological classification. Here we show that in the case of Gaussian states of bosons the corresponding topological invariant is always trivial. This also applies to finite-temperature states of bosons in lattices with a topologically non-trivial band-structure. As a consequence there is no quantized topological charge pumping for translational invariant bulk states of non-interacting bosons.

Adiabatic creation of entangled states by a bichromatic field designed from the topology of the dressed eigenenergies

Preparation of entangled pairs of coupled two-state systems driven by a bichromatic external field is studied. We use a system of two coupled spin-1/2 that can be translated into a three-state ladder model whose intermediate state represents the entangled state. We show that this entangled state can be prepared in a robust way with appropriate fields. Their frequencies and envelopes are derived from the topological properties of the model.

Coherent population transfer beyond the adiabatic limit: generalized matched pulses and higher-order trapping states

We show that the physical mechanism of population transfer in a 3-level system with a closed loop of coherent couplings (loop-STIRAP) is not equivalent to an adiabatic rotation of the dark-state of the Hamiltonian but coresponds to a rotation of a higher-order trapping state in a generalized adiabatic basis. The concept of generalized adiabatic basis sets is used as a constructive tool to design pulse sequences for stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) which give maximum population transfer also under conditions when the usual condition of adiabaticty is only poorly fulfilled. Under certain conditions for the pulses (generalized matched pulses) there exists a higher-order trapping state, which is an exact constant of motion and analytic solutions for the atomic dynamics can be derived.
