Phase Coherence of Strongly Interacting Bosons in One-Dimensional Optical Lattices

Ultracold Bose gases in one-dimensional optical lattices constitute an important benchmark problem in the study of strongly interacting many-body quantum phases. Here we present a combined experimental and theoretical study of their phase-coherence properties over a wide range of lattice depths. Experimentally, we extract the single-particle correlation function directly from the measured momentum distribution. Theoretically, we perform tensor-network simulations of the Bose-Hubbard model that incorporate all relevant experimental parameters. For deep lattices well within the Mott insulator regime, the experimental results are in good agreement with the expected zero-temperature behavior, with only small temperature-dependent corrections. As the lattice depth is reduced, finite-temperature effects become increasingly important. We find that the experimental data are quantitatively described by an effective temperature extracted from the tensor-network simulations, and that this effective temperature decreases markedly with increasing lattice depth. Rather than indicating actual cooling, we interpret this behavior as evidence of inhibition of thermalization caused by the formation of Mott domains that suppress heat transport. Counterintuitively, the inhibition of thermalization favors the preparation of an effectively low-entropy quantum gas in the trap center for large lattice depths.

Probing supersolidity through excitations in a spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate

Spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates are a flexible experimental platform to engineer synthetic quantum many-body systems. In particular, they host the so-called stripe phase, an instance of a supersolid state of matter. The peculiar excitation spectrum of the stripe phase, a definite footprint of its supersolidity, has been difficult to measure experimentally. Here, we perform in situ imaging of the stripes and directly observe both superfluid and crystal excitations. We investigate superfluid hydrodynamics and reveal a stripe compression mode, thus demonstrating that the system possesses a compressible crystalline structure. Through the frequency softening of this mode, we locate the supersolid transition point. Our results establish spin-orbit-coupled supersolids as ideal systems to investigate supersolidity and its rich dynamics.

Many-Body Dephasing by Hole Motion in a Spin-Orbit-Coupled Mott Insulator

We use Ramsey interferometry to study spin dynamics in the strongly interacting regime of spin-orbit-coupled quantum gases in one-dimensional optical lattices. We observe an intrinsic many-body dephasing mechanism immune to spin-echo in two-component Mott insulators. We ascribe the dephasing to the motion of hole-like defects in an otherwise inert Mott insulator, the spinless nature of the holes explaining the ineffectiveness of spin echo to restore it. We show that a model of spin-orbit-coupled hardcore bosons can explain quantitatively our experimental observations.

Resonant light scattering by a slab of ultracold atoms

A gas of ultracold atoms probed with laser light is a nearly-ideal experimental realization of a medium of resonant point-like scatterers, a key problem from condensed matter to biology or photonics. Yet, several recent experiments have reported large discrepancies with theory. In this work, we measure the complex transmission through a slab of ultracold two-level atoms with an interferometric technique. We find good agreement with first-principles simulations of mutually-coupled, laser-driven dipoles, and provide an explanation for the discrepancies in earlier measurements.
