Quark production in high energy proton-nucleus collisions

In this note, we discuss the problem of quark-antiquark pair production in the framework of the color glass condensate. The cross-section can be calculated in closed form for the case of proton-nucleus collisions, where the proton can be considered to be a dilute object. We find that kt-factorization is broken by rescattering effects.

Proton-nucleus collisions in the color glass condensate framework

We discuss proton-nucleus collisions in the framework of the color glass condensate. By assuming that the proton can be described as a low density color source, we solve exactly the Yang-Mills equations corresponding to this type of collision, and then use this solution in order to calculate inclusive gluon production or quark-antiquark production. Our result shows that k_T-factorization, while valid for gluon production, is violated for quark pair production in proton-nucleus collisions.

High energy pA collisions in the color glass condensate approach I. Gluon production and the Cronin effect

We study gluon production in high energy proton-nucleus collisions in the semi-classical framework of the Color Glass Condensate. We develop a general formalism to compute gluon fields in covariant gauge to lowest order in the classical field of the proton and to all orders in the classical field of the nucleus. The use of the covariant gauge makes the diagrammatic interpretation of the solution more transparnt. k_t-factorization holds to this order for gluon production -- Our results for the gluon distribution are equivalent to the prior diagrammatic analysis of Kovchegov and Mueller. We also show that these results are equivalent to the computation of gluon production by Dumitru and McLerran in the Fock-Schwinger gauge. We demonstrate how the Cronin effect arises in this approach, and examine its behavior in the two extreme limits of a) no small-x quantum evolution, and b) fully saturated quantum evolution. In both cases, the formalism reduces to Glauber's formalism of multiple scatterings. We comment on the possible implications of this study for the interpretation of the recent results on Deuteron-Gold collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC).

High energy pA collisions in the color glass condensate approach II. Quark production

We compute the production of quark-antiquark pairs in high energy collisions between a small and a large projectile, as in proton-nucleus collisions, in the framework of the Color Glass Condensate. We derive a general expression for quark pair-production, which is not k_t-factorizable. However, k_t-factorization is recovered in the limit of large mass pairs or large quark--anti-quark momenta. Our results are amenable to a simple interpretation and suggest how multi-parton correlations at small x can be quantified in high-energy proton/deuteron-nucleus collisions.

Large mass Q-Qbar production from the Color Glass Condensate

We compute quark-antiquark pair production in the context of the Color Glass Condensate model for central heavy-ion collisions. The calculation is performed analytically to leading order in the density of hard sources present in the projectiles, and is applicable to quarks with a mass large compared to the saturation momentum. The formulas derived in this paper are compared to expressions derived in the framework of collinearly factorized perturbative QCD and in kt factorization models. We comment on the breaking of kt factorization which occurs beyond leading order in our approach.

Anomalous chirality fluctuations in the initial stage of heavy ion collisions and parity odd bubbles

We compute numerically the topological charge distribution in the initial stage of a high energy heavy ion collision. This charge distribution is generated by Chern-Simons number fluctuations associated with the dynamics of strong classical fields in the initial state. The distribution is found to be quite narrow at RHIC and LHC energies reflecting a small value of the topological susceptibility. Thus the effective potential of classical fields is shallow in the $θ$-direction likely creating favorable conditions for the subsequent generation of P-odd bubbles.

Multiparticle production at RHIC and LHC: a classical point of view

We report results of our ongoing nonperturbative numerical study of a classical effective theory describing low-x partons in the central region of a heavy-ion collision. In particular, we give estimates of the initial transverse energies and multiplicities for a wide range of collision regimes, including those at RHIC and at LHC.

Hard Thermal Loops and Beyond in the Finite Temperature World-Line Formulation of QED

We derive the hard thermal loop action for soft electromagnetic fields in the finite temperature world-line formulation at imaginary time, by first integrating out the hard fermion modes from the microscopic QED action. Further, using the finite T world-line method, we calculate all static higher order terms in the soft electromagnetic field. At high T, the leading non-linear terms are independent of the temperature and, except for a term quartic in the time component of the vector potential, they cancel exactly against the vacuum contribution. The remaining T-dependent non-linear terms become more strongly suppressed by the temperature as the number of soft fields increases, thus making the expansion reliable. Applications of this method to other theories and problems at the soft scale are also briefly discussed.

Quantum Corrections to the Weizsäcker--Williams Distribution Function as Small x

We compute the quantum corrections to the gluon distribution function in the background of a non--Abelian Weizsäcker--Williams field. These corrections are valid to all orders in the effective coupling $α_s μ$, where $μ^2$ denotes the average valence quark color charge squared per unit area. We find $\ln(1/x)$ logarithmic corrections to the classical gluon distribution function. The one loop corrections to the classical Weizsäcker-Williams field do not contribute to these singular terms in the distribution function. Their effect is to cause the running of $α_s$.

Nucleation of Quark--Gluon Plasma from Hadronic Matter

The energy densities achieved during central collisions of large nuclei at Brookhaven's AGS may be high enough to allow the formation of quark--gluon plasma. Calculations based on relativistic nucleation theory suggest that rare events, perhaps one in every 10$^2$ or 10$^3$, undergo the phase transition. Experimental ramifications may include an enhancement in the ratio of pions to baryons, a reduction in the ratio of deuterons to protons, and a larger source size as seen by hadron interferometry.

Screening Mass from Chiral Perturbation Theory, Virial Expansion, and the Lattice

We calculate the electric screening mass in hot hadronic matter using two different approaches, chiral perturbation theory and the relativistic virial expansion with empirical phase shifts, and compare the results to each other and to a gas of free pions and $ρ$ mesons. We also compute the electric screening mass for noninteracting, charged bosons with mass $m$ on a lattice to study likely finite size effects in lattice gauge theory simulations of continuum QCD. For a lattice of given size, the continuum can be properly represented only for a window in the ratio $T/m$.
