Nonreciprocal spin waves in out-of-plane magnetized waveguides reconfigured by domain wall displacements

Wave-based platforms for novel unconventional computing approaches like neuromorphic computing require a well-defined, but adjustable flow of wave information combined with non-volatile data storage elements to implement weights which allow for training and learning. Due to their inherent nonreciprocal properties and their direct physical interaction with magnetic data storage, spin waves are ideal candidates to realize such platforms. In the present study, we show how spin-wave nonreciprocity induced by dipolar interactions of nanowaveguides with antiparallel, out-of-plane magnetization orientations can be used to create a spin-wave circulator allowing for unidirectional information transport and complex signal routing. In addition, the device can be reconfigured by a magnetic domain wall with adjustable position, which allows for a non-volatile tuning of the nonreciprocity and signal propagation. These properties are demonstrated for a spin-wave directional coupler through a combination of micromagnetic simulations and analytical modeling also showing that it functions as a waveguide crossing element, tunable power splitter, isolator, and frequency multiplexer. As magnetic material, out-of-plane magnetized Bismuth-doped Yttrium Iron Garnet has been considered. For this material, the motion of domain walls by magnonic spin transfer torque has been recently experimentally demonstrated which enables to store results from spin-wave computation. In combination with the presented concept of domain wall based reconfiguration and nonlinear spin-wave dynamics, this enables for the creation of a nano-scaled nonlinear wave computing platform with the capability for self-learning.

Simultaneous multitone microwave emission by DC-driven spintronic nano-element

Current-induced self-sustained magnetization oscillations in spin-torque nano-oscillators (STNOs) are promising candidates for ultra-agile microwave sources or detectors. While usually STNOs behave as a monochrome source, we report here clear bimodal simultaneous emission of incommensurate microwave oscillations, where the two tones correspond to two parametrically coupled eigenmodes with tunable splitting. The emission range is crucially sensitive to the change in hybridization of the eigenmodes of free and fixed layers, for instance, through a slight tilt of the applied magnetic field from the normal of the nano-pillar. Our experimental findings are supported both analytically and by micromagnetic simulations, which ascribe the process to four-magnon scattering between a pair of radially symmetric magnon modes and a pair of magnon modes with opposite azimuthal index. Our findings open up new possibilities for cognitive telecommunications and neuromorphic systems that use frequency multiplexing to improve communication performance.

Spin transport-induced damping of coherent THz spin dynamics in iron

We study the damping of perpendicular standing spin-waves (PSSWs) in ultrathin Fe films at frequencies up to 2.4 THz. The PSSWs are excited by optically generated ultrashort spin current pulses, and probed optically in the time domain. Analyzing the wavenumber and thickness dependence of the damping, we demonstrate that at sufficiently large wave vectors $k$ the damping is dominated by spin transport effects scaling with k^4 and limiting the frequency range of observable PSSWs. Although this contribution is known to originate in the spin diffusion, we argue that at moderate and large k a more general description is necessary and develop a model where the 'transverse spin mean free path' is the a key parameter, and estimate it to be ~0.5 nm.

Parametric generation of propagating spin-waves in ultra thin yttrium iron garnet waveguides

We present the experimental demonstration of the parallel parametric generation of spin-waves in a microscaled yttrium iron garnet waveguide with nanoscale thickness. Using Brillouin light scattering microscopy, we observe the excitation of the first and second waveguide modes generated by a stripline microwave pumping source. Micromagnetic simulations reveal the wave vector of the parametrically generated spin-waves. Based on analytical calculations, which are in excellent agreement with our experiments and simulations, we prove that the spin-wave radiation losses are the determinative term of the parametric instability threshold in this miniaturized system. The used method enables the direct excitation and amplification of nanometer spin-waves dominated by exchange interactions. Our results pave the way for integrated magnonics based on insulating nano-magnets.

Integrated magnonic half-adder

Spin waves and their quanta magnons open up a promising branch of high-speed and low-power information processing. Several important milestones were achieved recently in the realization of separate magnonic data processing units including logic gates, a magnon transistor and units for non-Boolean computing. Nevertheless, the realization of an integrated magnonic circuit consisting of at least two logic gates and suitable for further integration is still an unresolved challenge. Here we demonstrate such an integrated circuit numerically on the example of a magnonic half-adder. Its key element is a nonlinear directional coupler serving as combined XOR and AND logic gate that utilizes the dependence of the spin wave dispersion on its amplitude. The circuit constitutes of only three planar nano-waveguides and processes all information within the magnon domain. Benchmarking of the proposed device is performed showing the potential for sub-aJ energy consumption per operation.

Spin pinning and spin-wave dispersion in nanoscopic ferromagnetic waveguides

Spin waves are investigated in Yttrium Iron Garnet (YIG) waveguides with a thickness of 39 nm and widths ranging down to 50 nm, i.e., with aspect ratios thickness over width approaching unity, using Brillouin Light Scattering spectroscopy. The experimental results are verified by a semi-analytical theory and micromagnetic simulations. A critical width is found, below which the exchange interaction suppresses the dipolar pinning phenomenon. This changes the quantization criterion for the spin-wave eigenmodes and results in a pronounced modification of the spin-wave characteristics. The presented semi-analytical theory allows for the calculation of spin-wave mode profiles and dispersion relations in nano-structures.

Excitation of whispering gallery magnons in a magnetic vortex

One of the most fascinating topics in current quantum physics are hybridised systems, in which different quantum resonators are strongly coupled. Prominent examples are circular resonators with high quality factors that allow the coupling of optical whispering gallery modes to microwave cavities or magnon resonances in optomagnonics. Whispering gallery modes play a special role in this endeavour because of their high quality factor and strong localisation, which ultimately increases the overlap of the wavefunctions of quantum particles in hybridised systems. The hybridisation with magnons, the collective quantum excitations of the electron spins in a magnetically ordered material, is of particular interest because magnons can take over two functionalities: due to their collective nature they are robust and can serve as a quantum memory and, moreover, they can act as a wavelength converter between microwave and THz photons. However, the observation of whispering gallery magnons has not yet been achieved due to the lack of efficient excitation schemes for magnons with large wave vectors in a circular geometry. To tackle this problem, we studied nonlinear 3-magnon scattering as a means to generate whispering gallery magnons. This Letter discusses the basics of this nonlinear mechanism in a confined, circular geometry from experimental and theoretical point of view.

Backscattering immunity of dipole-exchange magnetostatic surface spin waves

The existence of backscattering-immune spin-wave modes is demonstrated in magnetic thin films of nano-scale thickness. Our results reveal that chiral Magneto Static Surface Waves (cMSSWs), which propagate perpendicular to the magnetization direction in an in-plane magnetized thin film, are robust against backscattering from surface defects. cMSSWs are protected against various types of surface inhomogeneities and defects as long as their frequency lies inside the gap of the volume modes. Our explanation is independent of the topology of the modes and predicts that this robustness is a consequence of symmetry breaking of the dynamic magnetic fields of cMSSWs due to the off-diagonal part of the dipolar interaction tensor, which is present both for long- (dipole dominated) and short-wavelength (exchange dominated) spin waves. Micromagnetic simulations confirm the robust character of the cMSSWs. Our results open a new direction in designing highly efficient magnonic logic elements and devices employing cMSSWs in nano-scale thin films.

Theory of nonreciprocal spin waves excitation in spin-Hall oscillators with Dzyaloshinkii-Moriya interaction

A two-dimensional analytical model for the description of the excitation of nonreciprocal spin waves by spin current in spin-Hall oscillators in the presence of the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (i-DMI) is developed. The theory allows one to calculate the threshold current for the excitation of spin waves, as well as the frequencies and spatial profiles of the excited spin wave modes. It is found, that the frequency of the excited spin waves exhibits a quadratic red shift with the i-DMI strength. At the same time, in the range of small and moderate values of the i-DMI constant, the averaged wave number of the excited spin waves is almost independent of the i-DMI, which results in a rather weak dependence on the i-DMI of the threshold current of the spin wave excitation. The obtained analytical results are confirmed by the results of micromagnetic simulations.

Spin-Hall nano-oscillator with oblique magnetization and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction as generator of skyrmions and nonreciprocal spin-waves

Spin-Hall oscillators are promising sources of spin-wave signals for magnonics applications, and can serve as building blocks for magnonic logic in ultralow power computation devices. Here, we analytically and micromagnetically study magnetization dynamics excited in a Spin-Hall oscillator with oblique magnetization when the spin-Hall effect and interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction act simultaneously. Our key results are (i) excitation of nonreciprocal spin-waves propagating perpendicularly to the in-plane projection of the static magnetization, (ii) skyrmions generation by pure spin-current, (iii) excitation of a new spin-wave mode with a spiral spatial profile originating from a gyrotropic rotation of a dynamical skyrmion. These results demonstrate that Spin-Hall oscillators can be used as generators of magnetic skyrmions and different types of propagating spin-waves for magnetic data storage and signal processing applications.
