Friedel-like Oscillations from Interstitial Iron in Superconducting Fe1+yTe0.62Se0.38

Using polarized and unpolarized neutron scattering we show that interstitial Fe in superconducting Fe_{1+y}Te_{1-x}Se_x induces a magnetic Friedel-like oscillation that diffracts at Q_(in-plane)=(1/2,0) and involves >50 neighboring Fe sites. The interstitial >2 mu_B moment is surrounded by compensating ferromagnetic four spin clusters that may seed double stripe ordering in Fe_{1+y}Te. A semi-metallic 5-band model with (1/2,1/2) Fermi surface nesting and four fold symmetric super-exchange between interstitial Fe and two in-plane nearest neighbors largely accounts for the observed diffraction.

Spin Order and Excitations in Triangular Antiferromagnet La2Ca2MnO7

We report a spin S = 3/2 triangular antiferromagnet with nearest-neighbor coupling J = 0.29 meV in La2Ca2MnO7. A genuinely two-dimensional, three-sublattice order develops below 2.80 K << the Weiss constant (25 K). The spin excitations deviate substantially from linear spin-wave theory, suggesting that magnon breakdown occurs in the material. Such a breakdown has been anticipated in recent theoretical studies, although the excitation spectrum remains to be accounted for.

Roton-like mode in solid He-4

Recent theoretical and experimental work on solid He-4 has focused on vacancies, or other lattice defects and whether these can form a Bose-Einstein condensate within the solid. The earliest suggestion that this could happen was based on the conjecture that the ground state of the solid at T = 0 K would include vacancies. Although no direct evidence for zero point vacancies has been presented, a variety of experimental observations have been interpreted as being due to thermally activated vacancies. Here we directly probe the excitation spectrum of hcp solid He-4 using inelastic neutron scattering. We identify a branch of delocalized excitations, with both longitudinal and transverse dispersion that coexist with acoustic phonons. While the energy gap is larger and the characteristic wavevector is shifted to coincide with the position of the (100) Bragg peak, the longitudinal effective mass of this mode is within 15% of that for rotons in superfluid He-4. The dispersion relation intersects the longitudinal acoustic phonon half way to the zone boundary, and this distinguishes the mode from a conventional optic phonon. Our results provide direct evidence for coherent delocalized non-phonon excitations in solid helium, which we identify as delocalized vacancy modes.

Universal features of charge and spin order in a half-doped layered perovskite

We have investigated the peculiar structure of charge and spin ordering in the half-doped layered perovskite oxide La$_{1.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$CoO$_4$ by elastic neutron scattering. Two samples with different preparation histories were studied. We find that the generic features of the ordered states, such as their short-range, glassy nature and the spin incommensurability, are sample-independent. At the same time, some subtle features of the ordered phases, such as the correlation lengths, differ.

Effect of a magnetic field on long-range magnetic order in stage-4 and stage-6 superconducting La2CuO(4+y)

We have measured the enhancement of the static incommensurate spin-density wave (SDW) order by an applied magnetic field in stage-4 and stage-6 samples of superconducting La2CuO(4+y). We show that the stage-6 La2CuO(4+y) (Tc=32 K) forms static long-range SDW order with the same wave-vector as that in the previously studied stage-4 material. We have measured the field dependence of the SDW magnetic Bragg peaks in both stage-4 and stage-6 materials at fields up to 14.5 T. A recent model of competing SDW order and superconductivity describes these data well.

Incommensurate magnetic structure of CeRhIn5

The magnetic structure of the heavy fermion antiferromagnet CeRhIn5 is determined using neutron diffraction. We find a magnetic wave vector q_M=(1/2,1/2,0.297), which is temperature independent up to T_N=3.8K. A staggered moment of 0.374(5) Bohr magneton at 1.4K, residing on the Ce ion, spirals transversely along the c axis. The nearest neighbor moments on the tetragonal basal plane are aligned antiferromagnetically.

Critical spin dynamics of the 2D quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnets: Sr_2CuO_2Cl_2 and Sr_2Cu_3O_4Cl_2

We report a neutron scattering study of the long-wavelength dynamic spin correlations in the model two-dimensional $S=1/2$ square lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnets Sr$_2$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$ and Sr$_2$Cu$_3$O$_4$Cl$_2$. The characteristic energy scale, $ω_0 (T/J)$, is determined by measuring the quasielastic peak width in the paramagnetic phase over a wide range of temperature ($0.2 \alt T/J \alt 0.7$). The obtained values for $ω_0 (T/J)$ agree {\it quantitatively} between the two compounds and also with values deduced from quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The combined data show scaling behavior, $ω\sim ξ^{-z}$, over the entire temperature range with $z=1.0(1)$, in agreement with dynamic scaling theory.

Critical dynamics of a spin-5/2 2D isotropic antiferromagnet

We report a neutron scattering study of the dynamic spin correlations in Rb$_2$MnF$_4$, a two-dimensional spin-5/2 antiferromagnet. By tuning an external magnetic field to the value for the spin-flop line, we reduce the effective spin anisotropy to essentially zero, thereby obtaining a nearly ideal two-dimensional isotropic antiferromagnet. From the shape of the quasielastic peak as a function of temperature, we demonstrate dynamic scaling for this system and find a value for the dynamical exponent $z$. We compare these results to theoretical predictions for the dynamic behavior of the two-dimensional Heisenberg model, in which deviations from $z=1$ provide a measure of the corrections to scaling.

Neutron Scattering study of Sr_2Cu_3O_4Cl_2

We report a neutron scattering study on the tetragonal compound Sr_2Cu_3O_4Cl_2, which has two-dimensional (2D) interpenetrating Cu_I and Cu_{II} subsystems, each forming a S=1/2 square lattice quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet (SLQHA). The mean-field ground state is degenerate, since the inter-subsystem interactions are geometrically frustrated. Magnetic neutron scattering experiments show that quantum fluctuations lift the degeneracy and cause a 2D Ising ordering of the Cu_{II} subsystem. Due to quantum fluctuations a dramatic increase of the Cu_I out-of-plane spin-wave gap is also observed. The temperature dependence and the dispersion of the spin-wave energy are quantitatively explained by spin-wave calculations which include quantum fluctuations explicitly. The values for the nearest-neighbor superexchange interactions between the Cu_I and Cu_{II} ions and between the Cu_{II} ions are determined experimentally to be J_{I-II} = -10(2)meV and J_{II}= 10.5(5)meV, respectively. Due to its small exchange interaction, J_{II}, the 2D dispersion of the Cu_{II} SLQHA can be measured over the whole Brillouin zone with thermal neutrons, and a novel dispersion at the zone boundary, predicted by theory, is confirmed. The instantaneous magnetic correlation length of the Cu_{II} SLQHA is obtained up to a very high temperature, T/J_{II}\approx 0.75. This result is compared with several theoretical predictions as well as recent experiments on the S=1/2 SLQHA.

Magnetic properties of the S=1/2 quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet CaCu2O3

We report single crystal growth and magnetic susceptibility and neutron diffraction studies of the S=1/2 quasi-1D antiferromagnet CaCu2O3. The structure of this material is similar to that of the prototype two-leg spin-ladder compound SrCu2O3. However, the Cu-O-Cu bond angle in the ladder rungs in CaCu2O3 is equal to 123 deg, and therefore the magnetic interaction along the rungs is expected to be much weaker in this material. At high temperatures, the magnetic susceptibility of CaCu2O3 can be decomposed into a contribution from 1D antiferromagnetic chains of finite-size chain segments together with a weak Curie contribution. The intrachain magnetic exchange constant, determined from the magnetic susceptibility measurements, is 2000 K. CaCu2O3 undergoes a Neel transition at T_N=25 K with ordering wavevector of (0.429(5), 0.5, 0.5). The magnetic structure is incommensurate in the direction of the frustrated interchain interaction. Weak commensurate (0.5, 0.5, 0.5) magnetic peaks are also observed below T_N. Application of a magnetic field induces a metamagnetic transition at which the incommensurability of the magnetic structure is substantially reduced. The material possesses only short-range magnetic order above the transition field.

Temperature and field dependence of the phase separation, structure, and magnetic ordering in La$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$MnO$_3$, ($x=0.47$, 0.50, and 0.53)

Neutron powder diffraction measurements, combined with magnetization and resistivity data, have been carried out in the doped perovskite La$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$MnO$_3$ ($x=0.47$, 0.50, and 0.53) to elucidate the structural, magnetic, and electronic properties of the system around the composition corresponding to an equal number of Mn3+ and Mn4+. At room temperature all three samples are paramagnetic and single phase, with crystallographic symmetry Pnma. The samples then all become ferromagnetic (FM) at $T_C\approx 265$ K. At $\sim 230$ K, however, a second distinct crystallographic phase (denoted A-II) begins to form. Initially the intrinsic widths of the peaks are quite large, but they narrow as the temperature decreases and the phase fraction increases, indicating microscopic coexistence. The fraction of the sample that exhibits the A-II phase increases with decreasing temperature and also increases with increasing Ca doping, but the transition never goes to completion to the lowest temperatures measured (5 K) and the two phases therefore coexist in this temperature-composition regime. Phase A-II orders antiferromagnetically (AFM) below a Néel temperature $T_N \approx 160$ K, with the CE-type magnetic structure. Resistivity measurements show that this phase is a conductor, while the CE phase is insulating. Application of magnetic fields up to 9 T progressively inhibits the formation of the A-II phase, but this suppression is path dependent, being much stronger for example if the sample is field-cooled compared to zero-field cooling and then applying the field. The H-T phase diagram obtained from the diffraction measurements is in good agreement with the results of magnetization and resistivity.

Neutron Scattering Study of Spin Density Wave Order in the Superconducting State of Excess-Oxygen-Doped La2CuO4+y

We report neutron scattering measurements of spin density wave order within the superconducting state of a single crystal of predominately stage-4 La2CuO4+y with a Tc(onset) of 42 K. The low temperature elastic magnetic scattering is incommensurate with the lattice and is characterized by long-range order in the copper-oxide plane with the spin direction identical to that in the insulator. Between neighboring planes, the spins exhibit short-range correlations with a stacking arrangement reminiscent of that in the undoped antiferromagnetic insulator. The elastic magnetic peak intensity appears at the same temperature within the errors as the superconductivity, suggesting that the two phenomena are strongly correlated. These observations directly reveal the persistent influence of the antiferromagnetic order as the doping level increases from the insulator to the superconductor. In addition, our results confirm that spin density wave order for incommensurabilities near 1/8 is a robust feature of the La2CuO4-based superconductors.

Unconventional ferromagnetic and spin-glass states of the reentrant spin glass Fe0.7Al0.3

Spin excitations of single crystal Fe0.7Al0.3 were investigated over a wide range in energy and reciprocal space with inelastic neutron scattering. In the ferromagnetic phase, propagating spin wave modes become paramagnon-like diffusive modes beyond a critical wave vector q0, indicating substantial disorder in the long-range ordered state. In the spin glass phase, spin dynamics is strongly q-dependent, suggesting remnant short-range spin correlations. Quantitative model for S(energy,q) in the ``ferromagnetic'' phase is determined.

Spin correlations in an isotropic spin-5/2 two-dimensional antiferromagnet

We report a neutron scattering study of the spin correlations for the spin 5/2, two-dimensional antiferromagnet Rb_2MnF_4 in an external magnetic field. Choosing fields near the system's bicritical point, we tune the effective anisotropy in the spin interaction to zero, constructing an ideal S=5/2 Heisenberg system. The correlation length and structure factor amplitude are closely described by the semiclassical theory of Cuccoli et al. over a broad temperature range but show no indication of approaching the low-temperature renormalized classical regime of the quantum non-linear sigma model.

Less than 50% sublattice polarization in an insulating S=3/2 kagome' antiferromagnet at low T

We have found weak long range antiferromagnetic order in the quasi-two-dimensional insulating oxide $ KCr_3(OD)_6(SO_4)_2$ which contains Cr$^{3+}$ S=3/2 ions on a kagomé lattice. In a sample with $\approx$ 76% occupancy of the chromium sites the ordered moment is 1.1(3)$μ_B$ per chromium ion which is only one third of the Néel value $gμ_BS=3μ_B$. The magnetic unit cell equals the chemical unit cell, a situation which is favored by inter-plane interactions. Gapless quantum spin-fluctuations ($Δ/k_B <0.25$K) with a bandwidth of 60K >> $T_N$ = 1.6K are the dominant contribution to the spin correlation function, $S(Q,ω)$ in the ordered phase.

Unconventional Ferromagnetic Transition in La1-xCaxMnO3

Neutron scattering has been used to study the magnetic correlations and long wavelength spin dynamics of La1-xCaxMnO3 in the ferromagnetic regime (0<=x<1/2). For x=1/3 (Tc=250K) where the magnetoresistance effects are largest the system behaves as an ideal isotropic ferromagnet at low T, with a gapless (<0.04meV) dispersion relation E=Dq^2 and D(T=0)~170 meV-A-1. However, an anomalous strongly-field-dependent diffusive component develops above ~200K and dominates the fluctuation spectrum as T approaches Tc. This component is not present at lower x.
