Fermi surface in the absence of a Fermi liquid in the Kondo insulator SmB$_6$

The search for a Fermi surface in the absence of a conventional Fermi liquid has thus far yielded very few potential candidates. Among promising materials are spin-frustrated Mott insulators near the insulator-metal transition, where theory predicts a Fermi surface associated with neutral low energy excitations. Here we reveal another route to experimentally realise a Fermi surface in the absence of a Fermi liquid by the experimental study of a Kondo insulator SmB$_6$ positioned close to the insulator-metal transition. We present experimental signatures down to low temperatures ($\ll 1$ K) associated with a Fermi surface in the bulk, including a sizeable linear specific heat coefficient, and on the application of a finite magnetic field, bulk magnetic quantum oscillations, finite quantum oscillatory entropy, and substantial enhancement in thermal conductivity well below the charge gap energy scale. Thus, the weight of evidence indicates that despite an extreme instance of Fermi liquid breakdown in Kondo insulating SmB$_6$, a Fermi surface arises from novel itinerant low energy excitations that couple to magnetic fields, but not weak DC electric fields.

Intact Quasiparticles at an Unconventional Quantum Critical Point

We report measurements of in-plane electrical and thermal transport properties in the limit $T \rightarrow 0$ near the unconventional quantum critical point in the heavy-fermion metal $β$-YbAlB$_4$. The high Kondo temperature $T_K$ $\simeq$ 200 K in this material allows us to probe transport extremely close to the critical point, at unusually small values of $T/T_K < 5 \times 10^{-4}$. Here we find that the Wiedemann-Franz law is obeyed at the lowest temperatures, implying that the Landau quasiparticles remain intact in the critical region. At finite temperatures we observe a non-Fermi liquid T-linear dependence of inelastic scattering processes to energies lower than those previously accessed. These processes have a weaker temperature dependence than in comparable heavy fermion quantum critical systems, and suggest a new temperature scale of $T \sim 0.3 K$ which signals a sudden change in character of the inelastic scattering.

Low-Energy Quasiparticles Probed by Heat Transport in the Iron Based Superconductor LaFePO

We have measured the thermal conductivity of the iron pnictide superconductor LaFePO down to temperatures as low as T=60mK and in magnetic fields up to 5 T. The data shows a large residual contribution that is linear in temperature, consistent with the presence of low energy electronic quasiparticles. We interpret the magnitude of the linear term, as well as the field and temperature dependence of thermal transport in several pairing scenarios. The presence of an unusual supralinear temperature dependence of the electronic thermal conductivity in zero magnetic field, and a high scattering rate with minimal Tc suppression argues for a sign-changing nodal s+/- state.

Dilatometric Study of LiHoF4 In a Transverse Magnetic Field

Theoretical and experimental work have not provided a consistent picture of the phase diagram of the nearly ideal Ising ferromagnet LiHoF4 in a transverse magnetic field. Using a newly fabricated capacitive dilatometer, we have investigated the thermal expansion and magnetostriction of LiHoF4 in magnetic fields applied perpendicular to the Ising direction. Critical points for the ferromagnetic phase transition have been determined from both methods in the classical paramagnetic to ferromagnetic regime. Excellent agreement has been found with existing experimental data suggesting that, in this regime, the current theoretical calculations have not entirely captured the physics of this interesting model system.

Multi-symmetry and Multi-band Superconductivity in Filled-skutterudites PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$ and PrRu$_4$Sb$_{12}$

Thermal conductivity measurements were performed on single crystal samples of the superconducting filled skutterudite compounds PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$ and PrRu$_4$Sb$_{12}$ both as a function of temperature and magnetic field applied perpendicular to the heat current. In zero magnetic field, the low temperature electronic thermal conductivity of PrRu$_4$Sb$_{12}$ is vanishingly small, consistent with a fully-gapped Fermi surface. For PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$, however, we find clear evidence for residual electronic conduction as the temperature tends to zero Kelvin which is consistent with the presence of nodes in the superconducting energy gap. The field dependence of the electronic conductivity for both compounds shows a rapid rise immediately above H$_{c1}$ and significant structure over the entire vortex state. In the fully gapped superconductor PrRu$_4$Sb$_{12}$, this is interpreted in terms of multi-band effects. In PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$, we consider the Doppler shift of nodal quasiparticles at low fields and multiband effects at higher fields.

Doping dependence of the superconducting gap in Tl_2Ba_2CuO_{6+delta} from heat transport

We present low-temperature thermal conductivity measurements on the cuprate Tl_2Ba_2CuO_{6+delta} throughout the overdoped regime. In the T -> 0 limit, the thermal conductivity due to d-wave nodal quasiparticles provides a bulk measurement of the superconducting gap, Delta. We find Delta to decrease with increasing doping, with a magnitude consistent with spectroscopic measurements (photoemission and tunneling). This argues for a pure and simple d-wave superconducting state in the overdoped region of the phase diagram, which appears to extend into the underdoped regime down to a hole concentration of 0.1 hole/Cu. As hole concentration is decreased, the gap-to-Tc ratio increases, showing that the suppression of the superconducting transition temperature Tc (relative to the gap) begins in the overdoped regime.

Nonvanishing Energy Scales at the Quantum Critical Point of CeCoIn5

Heat and charge transport were used to probe the magnetic field-tuned quantum critical point in the heavy-fermion metal CeCoIn$_5$. A comparison of electrical and thermal resistivities reveals three characteristic energy scales. A Fermi-liquid regime is observed below $T_{FL}$, with both transport coefficients diverging in parallel and $T_{FL}\to 0$ as $H\to H_c$, the critical field. The characteristic temperature of antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations, $T_{SF}$, is tuned to a minimum but {\it finite} value at $H_c$, which coincides with the end of the $T$-linear regime in the electrical resistivity. A third temperature scale, $T_{QP}$, signals the formation of quasiparticles, as fermions of charge $e$ obeying the Wiedemann-Franz law. Unlike $T_{FL}$, it remains finite at $H_c$, so that the integrity of quasiparticles is preserved, even though the standard signature of Fermi-liquid theory fails.

Thermal conductivity in the vicinity of the quantum critical endpoint in Sr3Ru2O7

Thermal conductivity of Sr3Ru2O7 was measured down to 40 mK and at magnetic fields through the quantum critical endpoint at H_c = 7.85 T. A peak in the electrical resistivity as a function of field was mimicked by the thermal resistivity. In the limit as T -> 0 K we find that the Wiedemann-Franz law is satisfied to within 5% at all fields, implying that there is no breakdown of the electron despite the destruction of the Fermi liquid state at quantum criticality. A significant change in disorder (from $ρ_0$(H=0T) = 2.1 $μΩ$ cm to 0.5 $μΩ$ cm) does not influence our conclusions. At finite temperatures, the temperature dependence of the Lorenz number is consistent with ferromagnetic fluctuations causing the non-Fermi liquid behavior as one would expect at a metamagnetic quantum critical endpoint.

Unpaired Electrons in the Heavy-Fermion Superconductor CeCoIn_{5}

Thermal conductivity and specific heat were measured in the superconducting state of the heavy fermion material Ce_{1-x}La_{x}CoIn_{5}. With increasing impurity concentration x, the suppression of T_{c} is accompanied by the increase in the residual electronic specific heat expected of a d-wave superconductor, but it occurs in parallel with a decrease in residual electronic thermal conductivity. This contrasting behavior reveals the presence of uncondensed electrons coexisting with nodal quasiparticles. An extreme multiband scenario is proposed, with a d-wave superconducting gap on the heavy-electron sheets of the Fermi surface and a negligible gap on the light, three-dimensional pockets.

Heat Transport as a Probe of Electron Scattering by Spin Fluctuations: the Case of Antiferromagnetic CeRhIn5

Heat and charge conduction were measured in the heavy-fermion metal CeRhIn5, an antiferromagnet with T_N=3.8 K. The thermal resistivity is found to be proportional to the magnetic entropy, revealing that spin fluctuations are as effective in scattering electrons as they are in disordering local moments. The electrical resistivity, governed by a q^2 weighting of fluctuations, increases monotonically with temperature. In contrast, the difference between thermal and electrical resistivities, characterized by an omega^2 weighting, peaks sharply at T_N and eventually goes to zero at a temperature T^* ~ 8 K. T^* thus emerges as a measure of the characteristic energy of magnetic fluctuations.

Delocalized fermions in underdoped cuprates

Low temperature heat transport was used to investigate the ground state of high-purity single crystals of the lightly-doped cuprate YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6.33}$. Samples were measured on either side of the superconducting phase boundary, in both zero and applied magnetic field. We report the observation of delocalized fermionic excitations at zero energy in the non-superconducting state, which shows that the ground state of underdoped cuprates is metallic. Its low-energy spectrum appears to be similar to that of the d-wave superconductor, i.e. nodal. The insulating ground state observed in underdoped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_4$ is attributed to the competing spin-density-wave order present in that system.

Giant electron-electron scattering in the Fermi-liquid state of Na_0.7CoO_2

The in-plane resistivity, rho, and thermal conductivity, kappa, of a single crystal of Na_0.7CoO_2 were measured down to 40 mK. Verification of the Wiedemann-Franz law, kappa/T = L_0/rho as T -> 0, and observation of a T^2 dependence of rho at low temperature, rho = rho_0 + AT^2, establish the existence of a well-defined Fermi-liquid state. The measured value of coefficient A reveals enormous electron-electron scattering, characterized by the largest Kadowaki-Woods ratio, A/gamma^2, encountered in any material. The rapid suppression of A with magnetic field suggests a possible proximity to a magnetic quantum critical point. We also speculate on the possible role of magnetic frustration and proximity to a Mott insulator.

Field-Induced Quantum Critical Point in CeCoIn5

The resistivity of the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn5 was measured as a function of temperature, down to 25 mK and in magnetic fields of up to 16 T applied perpendicular to the basal plane. With increasing field, we observe a suppression of the non-Fermi liquid behavior, rho ~ T, and the development of a Fermi liquid state, with its characteristic rho = rho_0 + AT^2 dependence. The field dependence of the T^2 coefficient shows critical behavior with an exponent of 1.37. This is evidence for a field-induced quantum critical point (QCP), occuring at a critical field which coincides, within experimental accuracy, with the superconducting critical field H_c2. We discuss the relation of this field-tuned QCP to a change in the magnetic state, seen as a change in magnetoresistance from positive to negative, at a crossover line that has a common border with the superconducting region below ~ 1 K.

Transport in Ultraclean YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$: neither Unitary nor Born Impurity Scattering

The thermal conductivity of ultraclean YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ was measured at very low temperature in magnetic fields up to 13 T. The temperature and field dependence of the electronic heat conductivity show that two widespread assumptions of transport theory applied to unconventional superconductors fail for clean cuprates: impurity scattering cannot be treated in the usual unitary limit (nor indeed in the Born limit), and scattering of quasiparticles off vortices cannot be neglected. Our study also sheds light on the long-standing puzzle of a sudden onset of a "plateau" in the thermal conductivity of Bi-2212 versus field.

Field-Induced Thermal Metal-to-Insulator Transition in Underdoped LSCO

The transport of heat and charge in cuprates was measured in single crystals of La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_{4+δ} (LSCO) across the doping phase diagram at low temperatures. In underdoped LSCO, the thermal conductivity is found to decrease with increasing magnetic field in the T goes to 0 limit, in striking contrast to the increase observed in all superconductors, including cuprates at higher doping. In heavily underdoped LSCO, where superconductivity can be entirely suppressed with an applied field, we show that a novel thermal metal-to-insulator transition takes place upon going from the superconducting state to the field-induced normal state.

Field-induced thermal metal-to-insulator transition in underdoped LSCO

The transport of heat and charge in cuprates was measured in undoped and heavily-underdoped single crystal La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_{4+delta} (LSCO). In underdoped LSCO, the thermal conductivity is found to decrease with increasing magnetic field in the T --> 0 limit, in striking contrast to the increase observed in all superconductors, including cuprates at higher doping. The suppression of superconductivity with magnetic field shows that a novel thermal metal-to-insulator transition occurs upon going from the superconducting state to the field-induced normal state.

Multiband superconductivity in NbSe_2 from heat transport

The thermal conductivity of the layered s-wave superconductor NbSe_2 was measured down to T_c/100 throughout the vortex state. With increasing field, we identify two regimes: one with localized states at fields very near H_c1 and one with highly delocalized quasiparticle excitations at higher fields. The two associated length scales are most naturally explained as multi-band superconductivity, with distinct small and large superconducting gaps on different sheets of the Fermi surface.

Doping dependence of superconducting gap in YBa_2Cu_3O_y from universal heat transport

Thermal transport in the T -> 0 limit was measured as a function of doping in high-quality single crystals of the cuprate superconductor YBa_2Cu_3O_y. The residual linear term kappa_0/T is found to decrease as one moves from the overdoped regime towards the Mott insulator region of the phase diagram. The doping dependence of the low-energy quasiparticle gap extracted from kappa_0/T is seen to scale closely with that of the pseudogap, arguing against a non-superconducting origin for the pseudogap. The presence of a linear term for all dopings is evidence against the existence of a quantum phase transition to an order parameter with a complex (ix) component.
