The Physics of the B Factories

This work is on the Physics of the B Factories. Part A of this book contains a brief description of the SLAC and KEK B Factories as well as their detectors, BaBar and Belle, and data taking related issues. Part B discusses tools and methods used by the experiments in order to obtain results. The results themselves can be found in Part C. Please note that version 3 on the archive is the auxiliary version of the Physics of the B Factories book. This uses the notation alpha, beta, gamma for the angles of the Unitarity Triangle. The nominal version uses the notation phi_1, phi_2 and phi_3. Please cite this work as Eur. Phys. J. C74 (2014) 3026.

Track Finding Efficiency in BaBar

We describe several studies to measure the charged track reconstruction efficiency and asymmetry of the BaBar detector. The first two studies measure the tracking efficiency of a charged particle using $\tau$ and initial state radiation decays. The third uses the $\tau$ decays to study the asymmetry in tracking, the fourth measures the tracking efficiency for low momentum tracks, and the last measures the reconstruction efficiency of $K_S^0$ particles. The first section also examines the stability of the measurements vs BaBar running periods.

The ARGUS Vertex Trigger

A fast second level trigger has been developed for the ARGUS experiment which recognizes tracks originating from the interaction region. The processor compares the hits in the ARGUS Micro Vertex Drift Chamber to 245760 masks stored in random access memories. The masks which are fully defined in three dimensions are able to reject tracks originating in the wall of the narrow beampipe of 10.5\,mm radius.

Semileptonic B Meson Decays and Interfering Amplitudes

Consequences of the interference between external and internal spectator amplitudes for the lifetimes and semileptonic decay fractions of $B^0$ and $B^+$ mesons are discussed. Extrapolating from the constructive interference observed in 11 exclusive hadronic $B$ decays we find an inclusive semileptonic decay fraction of $(11.2 \pm 0.5 \pm 1.7)$\%, significantly closer to the experimental results than previous predictions.

The Semileptonic Decay Fraction of B Mesons in the Light of Interfering Amplitudes

Consequences of the interference between spectator amplitudes for the lifetimes and semileptonic decay fractions of B^0 and B^+ mesons are discussed. Assuming duality and constructive interference between spectator amplitudes we are able to explain the low experimental value for the semileptonic decay fraction of $B$ mesons. Extracting these amplitudes from a fit to 11 exclusive hadronic B decay fractions we find a_1 = 1.05 +/- 0.03 +/- 0.10, a_2 =+0.227 +/ 0.012 +/- 0.022, an inclusive semileptonic decay fraction of (11.2 +/- 0.5 +/- 1.7), and a lifetime ratio tau(B^+) / tau(B^0) = 0.83 +/- 0.01 +/- 0.01.
