Search for Tens of MeV Neutrinos associated with Gamma-Ray Bursts in Super-Kamiokande

A search for neutrinos produced in coincidence with Gamma-Ray Bursts(GRB) was conducted with the Super-Kamiokande (SK) detector. Between December 2008 and March 2017, the Gamma-ray Coordinates Network recorded 2208 GRBs that occurred during normal SK operation. Several time windows around each GRB were used to search for coincident neutrino events. No statistically significant signal in excess of the estimated backgrounds was detected. The $\barν_e$ fluence in the range from 8 MeV to 100 MeV in positron total energy for $\barν_e+p\rightarrow e^{+}+n$ was found to be less than $\rm 5.07\times10^5$ cm$^{-2}$ per GRB in 90\% C.L. Upper bounds on the fluence as a function of neutrino energy were also obtained.

Value-assigned pulse shape discrimination for neutron detectors

Using the waveforms from a digital electronic system, an offline analysis technique on pulse shape discrimination (PSD) has been developed to improve the neutron-gamma separation in a bar-shaped NE-213 scintillator that couples to a photomultiplier tube (PMT) at each end. The new improved method, called the ``valued-assigned PSD'' (VPSD), assigns a normalized fitting residual to every waveform as the PSD value. This procedure then facilitates the incorporation of longitudinal position dependence of the scintillator, which further enhances the PSD capability of the detector system. In this paper, we use radiation emitted from an AmBe neutron source to demonstrate that the resulting neutron-gamma identification has been much improved when compared to the traditional technique that uses the geometric mean of light outputs from both PMTs. The new method has also been modified and applied to a recent experiment at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) that uses an analog electronic system.

An ALMA multi-line survey of the ISM in two quasar host-companion galaxy pairs at $z > 6$

We present a multi-line survey of the interstellar medium (ISM) in two $z>6$ quasar (QSO) host galaxies, PJ231-20 ($z=6.59$) and PJ308-21 ($z=6.23$), and their two companion galaxies. Observations were carried out using the Atacama Large (sub-)Millimeter Array (ALMA). We targeted eleven transitions including atomic fine structure lines (FSLs) and molecular lines: [NII]$_{\rm 205μm}$, [CI]$_{\rm 369μm}$, CO ($J_{\rm up} = 7, 10, 15, 16$), H$_2$O $3_{12}-2_{21}$, $3_{21}-3_{12}$, $3_{03}-2_{12}$, and the OH$_{\rm 163μm}$ doublet. The underlying far-infrared (FIR) continuum samples the Rayleigh-Jeans tail of the respective dust emission. By combining this information with our earlier ALMA [CII]$_{\rm 158μm}$ observations, we explore the effects of star formation and black hole feedback on the galaxies' ISM using the CLOUDY radiative transfer models. We estimate dust masses, spectral indexes, IR luminosities, and star-formation rates from the FIR continuum. The analysis of the FSLs indicates that the [CII]$_{\rm 158μm}$ and [CI]$_{\rm 369μm}$ emission arises predominantly from the neutral medium in photodissociation regions (PDRs). We find that line deficits are in agreement with those of local luminous infrared galaxies. The CO spectral line energy distributions (SLEDs), reveal significant high-$J$ CO excitation in both quasar hosts. Our CO SLED modeling of the quasar PJ231-20 shows that PDRs dominate the molecular mass and CO luminosities for $J_{\rm up}\le 7$, while the $J_{\rm up}\ge10$ CO emission is likely driven by X-ray dissociation regions produced by the active galactic nucleus (AGN) at the very center of the quasar host [abridged].

Laser-Induced Transient Magnons in Sr3Ir2O7 Throughout the Brillouin Zone

Although ultrafast manipulation of magnetism holds great promise for new physical phenomena and applications, targeting specific states is held back by our limited understanding of how magnetic correlations evolve on ultrafast timescales. Using ultrafast resonant inelastic x-ray scattering we demonstrate that femtosecond laser pulses can excite transient magnons at large wavevectors in gapped antiferromagnets, and that they persist for several picoseconds which is opposite to what is observed in nearly gapless magnets. Our work suggests that materials with isotropic magnetic interactions are preferred to achieve rapid manipulation of magnetism.

Flat band and $η$-pairing states in one-dimensional Moiré Hubbard model

A moiré system is formed when two periodic structures have a slightly mismatched period, resulting in unusual strongly correlated states in the presence of particle-particle interactions. The periodic structures can arise from the intrinsic crystalline order and periodic external field. We investigate a one-dimensional Hubbard models with periodic on-site potential of period $n_{0}$, which is commensurate to the lattice constant. For large $% n_{0}$, exact solution demonstrates that there is a midgap flat band with zero energy in the absence of Hubbard interaction. Each moiré unit cell contributes two zero energy levels to the flat band. In the presence of Hubbard interaction, the midgap physics is demonstrated to be well described by a uniform Hubbard chain, in which the effective hopping and on-site interaction strength, can be controlled by the amplitude and period of the external field. Numerical simulations are performed to demonstrate the correlated behaviors in the finite-sized moiré Hubbard system, including the existence of $η$-pairing state, and bound pair oscillation. This finding provides a method to enhance the correlated effect by a spatially periodic external field.

Probing the Symmetry Energy with the Spectral Pion Ratio

Many neutron star (NS) properties, such as the proton fraction within a NS, reflect the symmetry energy contributions to the Equation of State that dominate when neutron and proton densities differ strongly. To constrain these contributions at supra-saturation densities, we measure the spectra of charged pions produced by colliding rare isotope tin (Sn) beams with isotopically enriched Sn targets. Using ratios of the charged pion spectra measured at high transverse momenta, we deduce the slope of the symmetry energy to be $42 < L < 117$ MeV. This value is slightly lower but consistent with the $L$ values deduced from a recent measurement of the neutron skin thickness of $^{208}$Pb.

Electrostatic solitary waves in the Earth's bow shock: nature, properties, lifetimes and origin

We present a statistical analysis of more than two thousand bipolar electrostatic solitary waves (ESW) collected from ten quasi-perpendicular Earth's bow shock crossings by Magnetospheric Multiscale spacecraft. We developed and implemented a correction procedure for reconstruction of actual electric fields, velocities, and other properties of ESW from measurements, whose spatial scales are typically comparable with or smaller than spatial distance between voltage-sensitive probes. We determined the optimal ratio between frequency response factors of axial and spin plane antennas to be around 1.65/1.8. We found that more than 95\% of the ESW in the Earth's bow shock are of negative polarity and present an in depth analysis of properties of these ESW. They have spatial scales of about 10--100 m that is within a range of $λ_{D}$ to $10λ_{D}$, amplitudes typically below a few Volts that is below 0.1 of local electron temperature, and velocities below a few hundreds km/s in spacecraft and plasma rest frames that is on the order of local ion-acoustic speed. The spatial scales of ESW are distinctly correlated with local Debye length $λ_{D}$. ESW with amplitudes of 5--30 V or 0.1--0.3 Te have the occurrence rate of a few percent. The ESW have electric fields generally oblique to local magnetic field and propagate highly oblique to shock normal ${\bf N}$; more than 80\% of ESW propagate within 30$^{\circ}$ of the shock plane. In the shock plane, ESW typically propagate within a few tens of degrees of local magnetic field projection ${\bf B}_{\rm LM}$ onto the shock plane and preferentially opposite to ${\bf N}\times {\bf B}_{\rm LM}$. We argue that the ESW of negative polarity are ion phase space holes produced in a nonlinear stage of ion-ion ion-streaming instabilities. We estimated lifetimes of the ion holes to be 10--100 ms, or 1--10 km in terms of spatial distance.

Determining the temperature in heavy-ion collisions with multiplicity distribution

By relating the charge multiplicity distribution and the temperature of a de-exciting nucleus through a deep neural network, we propose that the charge multiplicity distribution can be used as a thermometer of heavy-ion collisions. Based on an isospin-dependent quantum molecular dynamics model, we study the caloric curve of reaction $^{103}$Pd + $^9$Be with the apparent temperature determined through the charge multiplicity distribution. The caloric curve shows a characteristic signature of nuclear liquid-gas phase transition around the apparent temperature $T_{\rm ap}$ $=$ $6.4~\rm MeV$, which is consistent with that through a traditional heavy-ion collision thermometer, and indicates the viability of determining the temperature in heavy-ion collisions with multiplicity distribution.

Search for proton decay via $p\to e^+π^0$ and $p\to μ^+π^0$ with an enlarged fiducial volume in Super-Kamiokande I-IV

We have searched for proton decay via $p\to e^+π^0$ and $p\to μ^+π^0$ modes with the enlarged fiducial volume data of Super-Kamiokande from April 1996 to May 2018, which corresponds to 450 kton$\cdot$years exposure. We have accumulated about 25% more livetime and enlarged the fiducial volume of the Super-Kamiokande detector from 22.5 kton to 27.2 kton for this analysis, so that 144 kton$\cdot$years of data, including 78 kton$\cdot$years of additional fiducial volume data, has been newly analyzed. No candidates have been found for $p\to e^+π^0$ and one candidate remains for $p\to μ^+π^0$ in the conventional 22.5 kton fiducial volume and it is consistent with the atmospheric neutrino background prediction. We set lower limits on the partial lifetime for each of these modes: $τ/B(p\to e^+π^0) > 2.4 \times 10^{34}$ years and $τ/B(p\to μ^+π^0) > 1.6 \times 10^{34}$ years at 90% confidence level.

Symmetry energy investigation with pion production from Sn+Sn systems

In the past two decades, pions created in the high density regions of heavy ion collisions have been predicted to be sensitive at high densities to the symmetry energy term in the nuclear equation of state, a property that is key to our understanding of neutron stars. In a new experiment designed to study the symmetry energy, the multiplicities of negatively and positively charged pions have been measured with high accuracy for central $^{132}$Sn+$^{124}$Sn, $^{112}$Sn+$^{124}$Sn, and $^{108}$Sn+$^{112}$Sn collisions at $E/A=270~\mathrm{MeV}$ with the S$π$RIT Time Projection Chamber. While the uncertainties of individual pion multiplicities are measured to 4\%, those of the charged pion multiplicity ratios are measured to 2\%. We compare these data to predictions from seven major transport models. The calculations reproduce qualitatively the dependence of the multiplicities and their ratios on the total neutron to proton number in the colliding systems. However, the predictions of the transport models from different codes differ too much to allow extraction of reliable constraints on the symmetry energy from the data. This finding may explain previous contradictory conclusions on symmetry energy constraints obtained from pion data in Au+Au system. These new results call for better understanding of the differences among transport codes, and new observables that are more sensitive to the density dependence of the symmetry energy.

Neutron-Antineutron Oscillation Search using a 0.37 Megaton$\cdot$Year Exposure of Super-Kamiokande

As a baryon number violating process with $ΔB=2$, neutron-antineutron oscillation ($n\to\bar n$) provides a unique test of baryon number conservation. We have performed a search for $n\to\bar n$ oscillation with bound neutrons in Super-Kamiokande, with the full data set from its first four run periods, representing an exposure of 0.37~Mton-years. The search used a multivariate analysis trained on simulated $n\to\bar n$ events and atmospheric neutrino backgrounds and resulted in 11 candidate events with an expected background of 9.3 events. In the absence of statistically significant excess, we derived a lower limit on $\bar n$ appearance lifetime in $^{16}$O nuclei of $3.6\times{10}^{32}$ years and on the neutron-antineutron oscillation time of $τ_{n\to\bar n} > 4.7\times10^{8}$~s at 90\% C.L..

Learning Monocular 3D Vehicle Detection without 3D Bounding Box Labels

The training of deep-learning-based 3D object detectors requires large datasets with 3D bounding box labels for supervision that have to be generated by hand-labeling. We propose a network architecture and training procedure for learning monocular 3D object detection without 3D bounding box labels. By representing the objects as triangular meshes and employing differentiable shape rendering, we define loss functions based on depth maps, segmentation masks, and ego- and object-motion, which are generated by pre-trained, off-the-shelf networks. We evaluate the proposed algorithm on the real-world KITTI dataset and achieve promising performance in comparison to state-of-the-art methods requiring 3D bounding box labels for training and superior performance to conventional baseline methods.

Radio frequency field-induced electron mobility in an ultracold plasma state of arrested relaxation

Penning ionization releases electrons in a state-selected Rydberg gas of nitric oxide entrained in a supersonic molecular beam. Subsequent processes of electron impact avalanche, bifurcation, and quench form a strongly coupled, spatially correlated ultracold plasma of NO$^+$ ions and electrons that exhibits characteristics of self-organized criticality. This plasma contains a residue of nitric oxide Rydberg molecules. A conventional fluid dynamics of ion-electron-Rydberg quasi-equilibrium predicts rapid decay to neutral atoms. Instead, the NO plasma endures for a millisecond or more, suggesting that quenched disorder creates a state of suppressed electron mobility. Supporting this proposition, a 60 MHz radiofrequency field with a peak-to-peak amplitude less than 1 V cm$^{-1}$ acts dramatically to mobilize electrons, causing the plasma to dissipate by dissociative recombination and Rydberg predissociation. An evident density dependence shows that this effect relies on collisions, giving weight to the idea of arrested relaxation as a cooperative property of the ensemble.

Quantum-critical scale invariance in a transition metal alloy

Quantum-mechanical fluctuations between competing phases at $T=0$ induce exotic finite-temperature collective excitations that are not described by the standard Landau Fermi liquid framework. These excitations exhibit anomalous temperature dependences, or non-Fermi liquid behavior, in the transport and thermodynamic properties in the vicinity of a quantum critical point, and are often intimately linked to the appearance of unconventional Cooper pairing as observed in strongly correlated systems including the high-$T_c$ cuprate and iron pnictide superconductors. The presence of superconductivity, however, precludes direct access to the quantum critical point, and makes it difficult to assess the role of quantum-critical fluctuations in shaping anomalous finite-temperature physical properties. Here we report temperature-field scale invariance of non-Fermi liquid thermodynamic, transport, and Hall quantities in a non-superconducting iron-pnictide, Ba(Fe$_{1/3}$Co$_{1/3}$Ni$_{1/3}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$, indicative of quantum criticality at zero temperature and zero applied magnetic field. Beyond a linear in temperature resistivity, the hallmark signature of strong quasiparticle scattering, we find the scattering rate that obeys a universal scaling relation between temperature and applied magnetic fields down to the lowest energy scales. Together with the dominance of hole-like carriers close to the zero-temperature and zero-field limits, the scale invariance, isotropic field response, and lack of applied pressure sensitivity suggests a unique quantum critical system that does not drive a pairing instability.

mm-wave Rydberg-Rydberg resonances as a witness of intermolecular coupling in the arrested relaxation of a molecular ultracold plasma

Out-of-equilibrium, strong correlation in a many-body system triggers emergent properties that can act in important ways to constrain the natural dissipation of energy and matter. Networks of atoms, intricately engineered to arrange positions and tune interaction energies, exhibit striking dynamics. But, strong correlation itself can also act to restrict available phase space. Relaxation confined by strong correlation gives rise to scale invariance and density distributions characteristic of self-organized criticality. For some time, we have observed signs of self-organization in the avalanche, bifurcation and quench of a state-selected Rydberg gas of nitric oxide to form an ultracold, strongly correlated ultracold plasma. The robust arrested relaxation of this system forms a disordered state with quantum-mechanical properties that appear to support a coherent destruction of transport. Work reported here focuses on initial stages of avalanche and quench, using the mm-wave spectroscopy of an embedded quantum probe to characterize the intermolecular interaction dynamics associated with the evolution to plasma. Double-resonance excitation prepares a Rydberg gas of nitric oxide composed of a single selected state, $n_0f(2)$. Penning ionization, followed by an avalanche of electron-Rydberg collisions, forms a plasma of NO$^+$ ions and weakly bound electrons, in which a residual population of $n_0$ Rydberg molecules evolves to high-$\ell$. At long times, $n_0\ell(2) \rightarrow (n_0 \pm 1)d(2)$ depletion resonances signal collision-free energy redistribution in the basis of central-field Rydberg states. The widths and asymmetries of Fano lineshapes witness the degree to which coupling to the arrested bath broadens the bright state as well as how bright-state predissociation mixes the network of levels in the localized ensemble.

The S$π$RIT Time Projection Chamber

The SAMURAI Pion Reconstruction and Ion-Tracker Time Projection Chamber (S$π$RIT TPC) was designed to enable measurements of heavy ion collisions with the SAMURAI spectrometer at the RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory and provide constraints on the Equation of State of neutron-rich nuclear matter. The S$π$RIT TPC has a 50.5 cm drift length and an 86.4 cm $\times$ 134.4 cm pad plane with 12,096 pads that are equipped with the Generic Electronics for TPCs readout electronics. The S$π$RIT TPC allows excellent reconstruction of particles and provides isotopic resolution for pions and other light charged particles across a wide range of energy losses and momenta. Details of the S$π$RIT TPC are presented, along with discussion of the TPC performance based on cosmic ray and experimental data.

Beam test results of IHEP-NDL Low Gain Avalanche Detectors(LGAD)

To meet the timing resolution requirement of up-coming High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), a new detector based on the Low-Gain Avalanche Detector(LGAD), High-Granularity Timing Detector (HGTD), is under intensive research in ATLAS. Two types of IHEP-NDL LGADs(BV60 and BV170) for this update is being developed by Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) of Chinese Academic of Sciences (CAS) cooperated with Novel Device Laboratory (NDL) of Beijing Normal University and they are now under detailed study. These detectors are tested with $5GeV$ electron beam at DESY. A SiPM detector is chosen as a reference detector to get the timing resolution of LGADs. The fluctuation of time difference between LGAD and SiPM is extracted by fitting with a Gaussian function. Constant fraction discriminator (CFD) method is used to mitigate the effect of time walk. The timing resolution of $41 \pm 1 ps$ and $63 \pm 1 ps$ are obtained for BV60 and BV170 respectively.

Indirect Search for Dark Matter from the Galactic Center and Halo with the Super-Kamiokande Detector

We present a search for an excess of neutrino interactions due to dark matter in the form of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) annihilating in the galactic center or halo based on the data set of Super-Kamiokande-I, -II, -III and -IV taken from 1996 to 2016. We model the neutrino flux, energy, and flavor distributions assuming WIMP self-annihilation is dominant to $ν\overlineν$, $μ^+μ^-$, $b\overline{b}$, or $W^+W^-$. The excess is in comparison to atmospheric neutrino interactions which are modeled in detail and fit to data. Limits on the self-annihilation cross section $\langle σ_{A} V \rangle$ are derived for WIMP masses in the range 1 GeV to 10 TeV, reaching as low as $9.6 \times10^{-23}$ cm$^3$ s$^{-1}$ for 5 GeV WIMPs in $b\bar b$ mode and $1.2 \times10^{-24}$ cm$^3$ s$^{-1}$ for 1 GeV WIMPs in $ν\bar ν$ mode. The obtained sensitivity of the Super-Kamiokande detector to WIMP masses below several tens of GeV is the best among similar indirect searches to date.
