Predictions for $p+$Pb Collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 5$ TeV: Comparison with Data

Predictions made in Albacete {\it et al} prior to the LHC $p+$Pb run at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 5$ TeV are compared to currently available data. Some predictions shown here have been updated by including the same experimental cuts as the data. Some additional predictions are also presented, especially for quarkonia, that were provided to the experiments before the data were made public but were too late for the original publication are also shown here.

The Role of FAST in Pulsar Timing Arrays

The Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST) will become one of the world-leading telescopes for pulsar timing array (PTA) research. The primary goals for PTAs are to detect (and subsequently study) ultra-low-frequency gravitational waves, to develop a pulsar-based time standard and to improve solar system planetary ephemerides. FAST will have the sensitivity to observe known pulsars with significantly improved signal-to-noise ratios and will discover a large number of currently unknown pulsars. We describe how FAST will contribute to PTA research and show that jitter- and timing-noise will be the limiting noise processes for FAST data sets. Jitter noise will limit the timing precision achievable over data spans of a few years while timing noise will limit the precision achievable over many years.

Unit cell orientation of tetragonal-like BiFeO$_3$ thin films grown on highly miscut LaAlO$_3$ substrates

Synchrotron and lab-scale x-ray diffraction shows that tetragonal-like T'-BiFeO3 films on miscut LaAlO3 substrates (miscut < 5 deg) exhibit (00l)-planes tilted away from those of the substrate as predicted by the "Nagai model" (except for miscut <0.2 deg). Tilts as large as 1 deg are achieved even in 100 nm thick films, strikingly larger than those observed in other perovskites. We attribute this to the large c/a ratio and the high crystalline coherency of the T'-BiFeO3/LaAlO3 interface. This coherency is possible through an observed "diagonal-on-diagonal" alignment. Interestingly, the substrate miscut does not influence the relative population of monoclinic domains.

Predictions for $p+$Pb Collisions at sqrt s_NN = 5 TeV

Predictions for charged hadron, identified light hadron, quarkonium, photon, jet and gauge bosons in p+Pb collisions at sqrt s_NN = 5 TeV are compiled and compared. When test run data are available, they are compared to the model predictions.

Search for neutral Higgs bosons decaying into four taus at LEP2

A search for the production and non-standard decay of a Higgs boson, h, into four taus through intermediate pseudoscalars, a, is conducted on 683 pb-1 of data collected by the ALEPH experiment at centre-of-mass energies from 183 to 209 GeV. No excess of events above background is observed, and exclusion limits are placed on the combined production cross section times branching ratio, ξ^2 = σ(e+e- --> Zh)/σ_{SM}(e+e- --> Zh) x B(h --> aa)x B(a --> τ^+τ^-)^2. For mh < 107 GeV/c2 and 4 < ma < 10 GeV/c2, ξ^2 > 1 is excluded at the 95% confidence level.
