Direct measurement of the in-medium $\eta^{\prime}$ mass spectrum through the $\gamma\gamma$ decay channel

We measured the invariant mass of the $\eta^{\prime}(958)$ meson through the $\eta^{\prime}\to\gamma\gamma$ decay channel to search for possible character change of $\eta^{\prime}$ in a nuclear medium. The measured invariant-mass spectra were analyzed by fitting realistic spectral functions. An enhancement was observed in the lower tail of the $\eta^{\prime}$ mass peak for low-momentum ($P_{\gamma\gamma} < 1$~$\mathrm{GeV/c}$) events. Three statistical methods were applied to assess the significance of the enhancement. All methods yield a statistical significance above 3.7$\sigma$. The spectral fitting indicates a mass reduction of $57.5^{+~5.7}_{-27.8}$~$\mathrm{MeV/c}^{2}$. Our result provides the first evidence for an in-medium spectral modification of the $\eta^{\prime}$ meson obtained through a direct measurement of its invariant mass.

Characterizing the temporal evolution of Biermann-battery-driven magnetic reconnection in laser-ablated plasmas

This paper presents an experimental investigation of magnetic reconnection between two laser-produced expanding plasmas, focusing on the quantitative evaluation of the reconnection rate and energy conversion under varying initial conditions. By changing the separation distance between the drive laser focal spots (1 mm and 2 mm), we systematically controlled the inflow parameters. The reconnection region was probed using a two-directional laser Thomson scattering (LTS) system, which simultaneously measured the local plasma parameters parallel to the outflows and along the current sheet. Based on our established method incorporating macroscopic energy and mass conservation laws to derive the upstream magnetic field directly from LTS spectra, we characterized the temporal evolution of the current sheet and the reconnection rate. The larger spot separation allows the plasma bubbles to expand for a substantially longer time before the formation of a reconnection current sheet, resulting in different upstream conditions. Nevertheless, both configurations yielded comparable upstream magnetic fields and reconnection rates. These results suggest that the reconnection rate is relatively insensitive to the global inflow conditions and is primarily controlled by the local physics of the reconnection layer once a current sheet is formed.

Comprehensive measurement of $\eta^\prime$ photoproduction off the proton at $E_\gamma < 2.4$ $\mathrm{GeV}$

For the spectroscopy of nucleon resonances at the total energies from the $\eta^\prime$-meson production threshold to $2.32$ $\mathrm{GeV}$, photon beam asymmetries of the reaction $\gamma p \to \eta^\prime p$ were measured together with total and differential cross sections by analyzing the two decay modes $\eta^\prime \to \gamma \gamma$ and $\pi^0 \pi^0 \eta$. New constraints for amplitude decomposition were given by the first-time result of photon beam asymmetries at $E_\gamma > 1.84$ $\mathrm{GeV}$ and the most precise data of differential cross sections to date at extremely backward $\eta^\prime$ angles. The possibility of a larger coupling constant of the $\eta^\prime$-nucleon system to the $N(2250)$ resonance was implied in the partial wave analyses using the present data.

Mechanism of generating collisionless shock in magnetized gas plasma driven by laser-ablated target plasma

Mechanism of generating collisionless shock in magnetized gas plasma driven by laser-ablated target plasma is investigated by using one-dimensional full particle-in-cell simulation. The effect of finite injection time of target plasma, mimicking finite width of laser pulse, is taken into account. It was found that the formation of a seed-shock requires a recursor. The precursor is driven by gyrating ions, and its origin varies depending on the injection time of the target plasma. When the injection time is short, the target plasma entering the gas plasma creates a precursor, otherwise, gas ions reflected by the strong piston effect of the target plasma create a precursor. The precursor compresses the background gas plasma, and subsequently, a compressed seed-shock forms in the gas plasma. The parameter dependence on the formation process and propagation characteristics of the seed-shock was discussed. It was confirmed that the seed-shock propagates through the gas plasma exhibiting behavior similar to the shock front of supercritical shocks.

Competition of magnetic reconnections in self-generated and external magnetic fields

We investigate the competition of magnetic reconnections in self-generated and external magnetic fields in laser-produced plasmas. The temporal evolution of plasma structures measured with self-emission imaging shows the vertical expansions and horizontal separation of plasma, which can be signatures of reconnection outflows in self-generated and external magnetic fields, respectively. Because the outflows in self-generated magnetic fields are not clear in the presence of the external magnetic field, the external magnetic field can suppress the magnetic reconnection in self-generated magnetic fields.

Collective Thomson scattering in non-equilibrium laser produced two-stream plasmas

We investigate collective Thomson scattering (CTS) in two-stream non-equilibrium plasmas analytically, numerically and experimentally. In laboratory astrophysics, CTS is a unique tool to obtain local plasma diagnostics. While the standard CTS theory assumes plasmas to be linear, stationary, isotropic and equilibrium, it is often nonlinear, non-stationary, anisotropic, and non-equilibrium in high energy phenomena relevant to laboratory astrophysics. We theoretically calculate and numerically simulate the CTS spectra in two-stream plasmas as a typical example of non-equilibrium system in space and astrophysical plasmas. The simulation results show the feasibility to diagnose two-stream instability directly via CTS measurements. In order to confirm the non-equilibrium CTS analysis, we have been developing experimental system with high repetition rate table top laser for laboratory astrophysics.

Detection of current-sheet and bipolar ion flows in a self-generated antiparallel magnetic field of laser-produced plasmas for magnetic reconnection research

Magnetic reconnection in laser-produced magnetized plasma is investigated by using optical diagnostics. The magnetic field is generated via Biermann battery effect, and the inversely directed magnetic field lines interact with each other. It is shown by self-emission measurement that two colliding plasmas stagnate on a mid-plane forming two planar dense regions, and that they interact later in time. Laser Thomson scattering spectra are distorted in the direction of the self-generated magnetic field, indicating asymmetric ion velocity distribution and plasma acceleration. In addition, the spectra perpendicular to the magnetic field show different peak intensity, suggesting an electron current formation. These results are interpreted as magnetic field dissipation, reconnection, and outflow acceleration. Two-directional laser Thomson scattering is, as discussed here, a powerful tool for the investigation of microphysics in the reconnection region.

High-power laser experiment on developing supercritical shock propagating in homogeneously magnetized plasma of ambient gas origin

A developing supercritical collisionless shock propagating in a homogeneously magnetized plasma of ambient gas origin having higher uniformity than the previous experiments is formed by using high-power laser experiment. The ambient plasma is not contaminated by the plasma produced in the early time after the laser shot. While the observed developing shock does not have stationary downstream structure, it possesses some characteristics of a magnetized supercritical shock, which are supported by a one-dimensional full particle-in-cell simulation taking the effect of finite time of laser-target interaction into account.

Coherent photoproduction of the neutral pion and eta meson on the deuteron at incident energies below 1.15 GeV

Coherent photoproduction of the neutral pion and eta meson on the deuteron, $γ{d}${$\to$}$π^0η{d}$, has been experimentally studied at incident photon energies ranging from the reaction threshold to 1.15 GeV. The total cross section demonstrates a rapid rise below 1 GeV. The data are underestimated by the existing theoretical calculations based on quasi-free $π^0 η$ photoproduction on the nucleon followed by deuteron coalescence. At the same time, the data are rather well reproduced by the calculations taking into account the final-state interaction. We have also measured for the first time the differential cross sections: the $π^0 η$ invariant-mass distribution $dσ/dM_{πη}$, the $π^0 d$ invariant-mass distribution $dσ/dM_{πd}$, the $ηd$ invariant-mass distribution $dσ/dM_{ηd}$, and the distribution over the deuteron emission angle $dσ/dΩ_d$ in the overall center-of-mass frame. The measured cross section $dσ/dΩ_d$ does not exhibit strongly backward-peaking behavior predicted by the calculations. At all incident energies, an increase in $dσ/dM_{ηd}$ near the $ηd$ threshold is observed, which indicates a bound or virtual $ηd$ state resulting from a strong attraction between $η$ and a deuteron. The possibilities of using coherent $π^0η$ photoproduction on a nucleus to study the $η$-nuclear interaction are also discussed.

Differential cross sections and photon beam asymmetries of $η$ photoproduction on the proton at $E_γ$ = 1.3-2.4 GeV

We have carried out exclusive measurements for the photoproduction of an $η$ meson from a proton target with an egg-shaped calorimeter made of BGO crystals (BGOegg) and forward charged-particle detectors at the SPring-8 LEPS2 beamline. The differential cross sections and photon beam asymmetries of the $γp \to ηp$ reaction are measured in a center-of-mass energy ($W$) range of $1.82$-$2.32$ GeV and a polar angle range of $-1.0 < \cos{θ^η_{\mathrm{c.m.}}} < 0.6$. The reaction is identified by selecting a proton and two $γ$'s produced by an $η$-meson decay. The kinematic fit method was employed to select the reaction candidate with the confidence level larger than $1$\%. A bump structure at $W$ = $2.0$-$2.3$ GeV in the differential cross section is confirmed at extremely backward $η$ polar angles, where the existing data are inconsistent with each other. This bump structure is likely associated with high-spin resonances that couple with $s\bar{s}$ quarks. The results of the photon beam asymmetries in a wide $η$ polar angle range are new for the photon beam energies exceeding $2.1$ GeV. These results are not reproduced by the existing partial wave analyses. They provide an additional constraint to nucleon resonance studies at high energies.

Resonance-like structure near the $ηd$ threshold in the $γ{d}${$\to$}$π^0η{d}$ reaction

To investigate the interaction between the nucleon $N$ and nucleon resonance $N(1535)1/2^-$, the $ηd$ threshold structure connected to the isoscalar $S$-wave $N$-$N(1535)1/2^-$ system has been experimentally studied in the $γ{d}${$\to$}$π^0η{d}$ reaction at incident photon energies ranging from the reaction threshold to 1.15 GeV. A strong enhancement is observed near the $ηd$ threshold over the three-body phase-space contribution in the $ηd$ invariant-mass distribution. An analysis incorporating the known isovector resonance $\mathcal{D}_{12}$ with a spin-parity of $2^+$ in the $π^0d$ channel reveals the existence of a narrow isoscalar resonance-like structure with $1^-$ in the $ηd$ system. Using a Flatté parametrization, the mass is found to be $2.427_{-0.006}^{+0.013}$ GeV, close to the $ηd$ threshold, and the width is $\left(0.029_{-0.029}^{+0.006}{\rm\ GeV}\right)+\left(0.00_{-0.00}^{+0.41}\right) p_ηc$, where $p_η$ denotes the $η$ momentum in the rest frame of the $ηd$ system. The observed structure would be attributed to a predicted isoscalar $1^-$ $ηNN$ bound state from $ηNN$ and $πNN$ coupled-channel calculation, or an $ηd$ virtual state owing to strong $ηd$ attraction.

Probing the star formation origin of gamma rays from 3FHL J1907.0+0713

Star-forming (SF) regions embedded inside giant molecular clouds (GMCs) are potential contributors to Galactic gamma rays. The gamma-ray source 3FHL J1907.0+0713 is detected with a significance of roughly 13$σ$ in the 0.2 $-$ 300 GeV energy range after the removal of gamma-ray pulsation periods of PSR J1906+0722 from the Fermi-LAT data set of about 10 years. The energy spectrum of 3FHL J1907.0+0713 is best-fitted to a power law model with a spectral index of 2.26 $\pm$ 0.05. The CO($J$ = 1$-$0) data taken by NANTEN2 revealed that 3FHL J1907.0+0713 is overlapping with a GMC having a peak velocity of about 38 km s$^{-1}$. The best-fitting location of 3FHL J1907.0+0713 is measured to be approximately 0.13 degrees away from the Galactic supernova remnant (SNR) 3C 397 and it overlaps with a star that is associated with a bow-shock nebula. We show that there is no physical connection between 3FHL J1907.0+0713, 3C 397, as well as any positional coincidence with the pulsar. The spectrum of 3FHL J1907.0+0713 is fitting to both hadronic and leptonic gamma-ray emission models and the total luminosity at a distance of 2.6 kpc is calculated to be 1.1 $\times$ 10$^{34}$ erg s$^{-1}$. We also discuss possible SF origins of gamma rays from 3FHL J1907.0+0713, where SNRs, massive protostar outflows, stellar winds from runaway stars, colliding wind binaries, and young stellar clusters are considered as candidate sources.

ALMA CO Observations of the Gamma-Ray Supernova Remnant RX J1713.7-3946: Discovery of Shocked Molecular Cloudlets and Filaments at 0.01 pc scales

RX J1713.7-3946 is a unique core-collapse SNR that emits bright TeV gamma-rays and synchrotron X-rays caused by cosmic rays, in addition to interactions with interstellar gas clouds. We report here on results of ALMA $^{12}$CO($J$ = 1-0) observations toward the northwestern shell of the SNR. We newly found three molecular complexes consisting of dozens of shocked molecular cloudlets and filaments with typical radii of $\sim$0.03-0.05 pc and densities of $\sim$$10^4$ cm$^{-3}$. These cloudlets and filaments are located not only along synchrotron X-ray filaments, but also in the vicinity of X-ray hotspots with month or year-scale time variations. We argue that X-ray hotspots were generated by shock-cloudlet interactions through magnetic-field amplification up to mG. The ISM density contrast of $\sim$$10^5$, coexistence of molecular cloudlets and low-density diffuse medium of $\sim$0.1 cm$^{-3}$, is consistent with such a magnetic field amplification as well as a wind-bubble scenario. The small-scale cloud structures also affect hadronic gamma-ray spectra considering the magnetic field amplification on surface and inside clouds.

Search for $η'$ bound nuclei in the $^{12}{\rm C}(γ,p)$ reaction with simultaneous detection of decay products

We measured missing mass spectrum of the $^{12}{\rm C}(γ,p)$ reaction for the first time in coincidence with potential decay products from $η'$ bound nuclei. We tagged an ($η+p$) pair associated with the $η'N\toηN$ process in a nucleus. After applying kinematical selections to reduce backgrounds, no signal events were observed in the bound-state region. An upper limit of the signal cross section in the opening angle $\cosθ^{ηp}_{lab}<-0.9$ was obtained to be 2.2 nb/sr at the 90$\%$ confidence level. It is compared with theoretical cross sections, whose normalization ambiguity is suppressed by measuring a quasifree $η'$ production rate. Our results indicate a small branching fraction of the $η'N\toηN$ process and/or a shallow $η'$-nucleus potential.

Helicity-Changing Brillouin Light Scattering by Magnons in a Ferromagnetic Crystal

Brillouin light scattering in ferromagnetic materials usually involves one magnon and two photons and their total angular momentum is conserved. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the presence of a helicity-changing two-magnon Brillouin light scattering in a ferromagetic crystal, which can be viewed as a four-wave mixing process involving two magnons and two photons. Moreover, we observe an unconventional helicity-changing one-magnon Brillouin light scattering, which apparently infringes the conservation law of the angular momentum. We show that the crystal angular momentum intervenes to compensate the missing angular momentum in the latter scattering process.

Anomalous plasma acceleration in colliding high-power laser-produced plasmas

We developed an experimental platform for studying magnetic reconnection in an external magnetic field with simultaneous measurements of plasma imaging, flow velocity, and magnetic-field variation. Here, we investigate the stagnation and acceleration in counter-streaming plasmas generated by high-power laser beams. A plasma flow perpendicular to the initial flow directions is measured with laser Thomson scattering. The flow is, interestingly, accelerated toward the high-density region, which is opposite to the direction of the acceleration by pressure gradients. This acceleration is possibly interpreted by the interaction of two magnetic field loops initially generated by Biermann battery effect, resulting in a magnetic reconnection forming a single field loop and additional acceleration by a magnetic tension force.

$ωN$ scattering length from $ω$ photoproduction on the proton near the threshold

Photoproduction of the $ω$ meson on the proton has been experimentally studied near the threshold. The total cross sections are determined at incident energies ranging from 1.09 to 1.15 GeV. The 1/2 and 3/2 spin-averaged scattering length $a_{ωp}$ and effective range $r_{ωp}$ between the $ω$ meson and proton are estimated from the shape of the total cross section as a function of the incident photon energy: $a_{ωp} = \left(-0.97^{+0.16_{\rm stat}}_{-0.16_{\rm stat}}{}^{+0.03_{\rm syst}}_{-0.00_{\rm syst}}\right)+i \left(0.07^{+0.15_{\rm stat}}_{-0.14_{\rm stat}}{}^{+0.17_{\rm syst}}_{-0.09_{\rm syst}}\right)$ fm and $r_{ωp}=\left(+2.78^{+0.68_{\rm stat}}_{-0.54_{\rm stat}}{}^{+0.11_{\rm syst}}_{-0.13_{\rm syst}}\right)+i\left(-0.01^{+0.46_{\rm stat}}_{-0.50_{\rm stat}}{}^{+0.07_{\rm syst}}_{-0.00_{\rm syst}}\right)$ fm, resulting in a repulsive force. The real and imaginary parts for $a_{ωp}$ and $r_{ωp}$ are determined separately for the first time. A small $P$-wave contribution does not affect the obtained values.

Full particle-in-cell simulation of the interaction between two plasmas for laboratory experiments on the generation of magnetized collisionless shocks with high-power lasers

A preliminary numerical experiment is conducted for laboratory experiments on the generation of magnetized collisionless shocks with high-power lasers by using one-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation. The present study deals with the interaction between a moving Aluminum plasma and a Nitrogen plasma at rest. In the numerical experiment, the Nitrogen plasma is unmagnetized or magnetized by a weak external magnetic field. Since the previous study suggested the generation of spontaneous magnetic field in the piston (Aluminum) plasma due to the Biermann battery, the effect of the magnetic field is of interest. Sharp jumps of electron density and magnetic field are observed around the interface between the two plasmas as long as one of the two plasmas is magnetized, which indicates the formation of tangential electron-magneto-hydro-dynamic discontinuity. When the Aluminum plasma is magnetized, strong compression of both density and magnetic field takes place in the pure Aluminum plasma during the gyration of Nitrogen ions in the Aluminum plasma region. The formation of a shock downstream is indicated from the shock jump condition. The result suggests that the spontaneous magnetic field in the piston (Aluminum) plasma plays an essential role in the formation of a perpendicular collisionless shock.
