Direct observation of the spin texture in strongly correlated SmB6 as evidence of the topological Kondo insulator

The concept of a topological Kondo insulator (TKI) has been brought forward as a new class of topological insulators in which non-trivial surface states reside in the bulk Kondo band gap at low temperature due to the strong spin-orbit coupling [1-3]. In contrast to other three-dimensional (3D) topological insulators (e.g. Bi2Se3), a TKI is truly insulating in the bulk [4]. Furthermore, strong electron correlations are present in the system, which may interact with the novel topological phase. Applying spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (SARPES) to the Kondo insulator SmB6, a promising TKI candidate, we reveal that the surface states of SmB6 are spin polarized, and the spin is locked to the crystal momentum. Counter-propagating states (i.e. at k and -k) have opposite spin polarizations protected by time-reversal symmetry. Together with the odd number of Fermi surfaces of surface states between the 4 time-reversal invariant momenta in the surface Brillouin zone [5], these findings prove, for the first time, that SmB6 can host non-trivial topological surface states in a full insulating gap in the bulk stemming from the Kondo effect. Hence our experimental results establish that SmB6 is the first realization of a 3D TKI. It can also serve as an ideal platform for the systematic study of the interplay between novel topological quantum states with emergent effects and competing order induced by strongly correlated electrons.

Magnetoelectric coupling at the interface of BiFeO3/La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 multilayers

Electric-field controlled exchange bias in a heterostructure composed of the ferromagnetic manganite La0.7Sr0.3MO3 and the ferroelectric antiferromagnetic BiFeO3 has recently been demonstrated experimentally. By means of a microscopic model Hamiltonian we provide a possible explanation of the origin of this magnetoelectric coupling. We find, in agreement with experimental results, a net ferromagnetic moment at the BiFeO3 interface. The induced ferromagnetic moment is the result of the competition between the e_g-electrons double exchange and the t_2g-spins antiferromagnetic superexchange that dominate in bulk BiFeO3. The balance of these simultaneous ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic tendencies is strongly affected by the interfacial electronic charge density which, in turn, can be controlled by the BiFeO3 ferroelectric polarization.

Dynamic microscopic structures and dielectric response in the cubic-to-tetragonal phase transition for BaTiO3 studied by first-principles molecular dynamics simulation

The dynamic structures of the cubic and tetragonal phase in BaTiO3 and its dielectric response above the cubic-to-tetragonal phase transition temperature (Tp) are studied by first-principles molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. It's shown that the phase transition is due to the condensation of one of the transverse correlations. Calculation of the phonon properties for both the cubic and tetragonal phase shows a saturation of the soft mode frequency near 60 cm-1 near Tp and advocates its order-disorder nature. Our first-principles calculation leads directly to a two modes feature of the dielectric function above Tp [Phys. Rev. B 28, 6097 (1983)], which well explains the long time controversies between experiments and theories.

Reversible Structural Transition in Epitaxial Manganite Film

A reversible structural transition of an epitaxial La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 film deposited on the LaAlO3 substrate has been investigated by means of in situ high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HREM) and electron diffraction, combined with image and diffraction calculations. We observe that the crystallographic symmetry of the film can be lowered via electron beam irradiation, leading to a rhombohedral-monoclinic transition. This transition can be attributed to the cooperating effect of the mismatch stress and the irradiation-induced thermal-stress.

Degenerations of Schubert varieties of SL(n)/B to toric varities

Using polytopes defined in an earlier paper, we show in this paper the existence of degenerations of a large class of Schubert varieties of SL_n to toric varieties by extending the method used by Gonciulea and Lakshmibai for a minuscule G/P to Schubert varieties in SL_n

A Delayed Choice Quantum Eraser

This paper reports a "delayed choice quantum eraser" experiment proposed by Scully and Drühl in 1982. The experimental results demonstrated the possibility of simultaneously observing both particle-like and wave-like behavior of a quantum via quantum entanglement. The which-path or both-path information of a quantum can be erased or marked by its entangled twin even after the registration of the quantum.

Dynamic Local Distortions in Ferroelectrics

Molecular-dynamics simulations of KNbO$_3$ reveal preformed dynamic chain-like structures, present even in the paraelectric phase, that are related to the softening of phonon branches over large regions of the Brillouin zone. The phase sequence of ferroelectric transitions is correctly reproduced, showing that the first-principles effective Hamiltonian used in the simulations captures the essential behavior of the microscopic fluctuations driving the transitions. Real space chains provide a framework for understanding both the displacive and order-disorder characteristics of these phase transitions.
