Fermion propagator in a rotating environment

We apply the exponential operator method to derive the propagator for a fermion immersed within a rigidly rotating environment with cylindrical geometry. Given that the rotation axis provides a preferred direction, Lorentz symmetry is lost and the general solution is not translationally invariant in the radial coordinate. However, under the approximation that the fermion is completely dragged by the vortical motion, valid for large angular velocities, translation invariance is recovered. The propagator can then be written in momentum space. The result is suited to be used applying ordinary Feynman rules for perturbative calculations in momentum space.

Magnetic field dependence of the neutral pion mass in the linear sigma model with quarks: The strong field case

We use the linear sigma model with quarks to find the magnetic field-induced modifications to the neutral pion mass at one-loop level. The magnetic field effects are introduced by using charged particle propagators in the presence of a magnetic background in the strong field regime. We show that when accounting for the effects of the magnetic field on the model couplings, the vacuum sigma field and the neutral pion self-energy, the neutral pion mass decreases monotonically as a function of the field strength. We find an excellent qualitative and quantitative agreement with recent lattice QCD calculations, reproducing the monotonically decreasing trend with the field strength as well as the decrease when lattice data approaches the physical vacuum pion mass from larger values.

Magnetic corrections to the boson self-coupling and boson-fermion coupling in the linear sigma model with quarks

We compute the magnetic field-induced modifications to the boson self-coupling and the boson-fermion coupling, in the static limit, using an effective model of QCD, the linear sigma model with quarks. The former is computed for arbitrary field strengths as well as using the strong field approximation. The latter is obtained in the strong field limit. The arbitrary field result for the boson self-coupling depends on the ultraviolet renormalization scale and this dependence cannot be removed by a simple vacuum subtraction. Using the strong field result as a guide, we find the appropriate choice for this scale and discuss the physical implications. The boson-fermion coupling depends on the Schwinger's phase and we show how this phase can be treated consistently in such a way that the magnetic field induced vertex modification is both gauge invariant and can be written with an explicit factor corresponding to energy-momentum conservation for the external particles. Both couplings show a modest decrease with the field strength.

Magnetic field dependence of nucleon parameters from QCD sum rules

Finite energy QCD sum rules involving nucleon current correlators are used to determine several QCD and hadronic parameters in the presence of an external, uniform, large magnetic field. The continuum hadronic threshold $s_0$, nucleon mass $m_N$, current-nucleon coupling $λ_N$, transverse velocity $v_\perp$, the spin polarization condensate $\langle\bar qσ_{12} q\rangle$, and the magnetic susceptibility of the quark condensate $χ_q$, are obtained for the case of protons and neutrons. Due to the magnetic field, and charge asymmetry of light quarks up and down, all the obtained quantities evolve differently with the magnetic field, for each nucleon or quark flavor. With this approach it is possible to obtain the evolution of the above parameters up to a magnetic field strength $eB < 1.4$ GeV$^2$.

Gluon polarization tensor and dispersion relation in a weakly magnetized medium

We study the polarization and dispersion properties of gluons moving within a weakly magnetized background at one-loop order. To this end, we show two alternative derivations of the charged fermion propagator in the weak field expansion and use this expression to compute the lowest order magnetic field correction to the gluon polarization tensor. We explicitly show that, in spite of its cumbersome appearance, the gluon polarization tensor is transverse as required by gauge invariance. We also show that none of the three polarization modes develops a magnetic mass and that gluons propagate along the light cone, non withstanding that Lorentz invariance is lost due to the presence of the magnetic field. By comparing with the expression for the gluon polarization tensor valid to all orders in the magnetic field, the existence of a second solution, corresponding to a finite gluon mass, is shown to be spurious and an artifact of the lowest order approximation in the field strength. We also study the strength of the polarization modes for real gluons. We conclude that, provided the spurious solutions are discarded, the lowest order approximation to the gluon polarization and dispersion properties is good as long as the field strength is small compared to the loop fermion mass.

Thermal corrections to the gluon magnetic Debye mass

We compute the gluon polarization tensor in a thermo-magnetic environment in the strong magnetic field limit at zero and high temperature. The magnetic field effects are introduced using Schwinger's proper time method. Thermal effects are computed in the HTL approximation. At zero temperature, we reproduce the well-known result whereby for a non-vanishing quark mass, the polarization tensor reduces to the parallel structure and its coefficient develops an imaginary part corresponding to the threshold for quark-antiquark pair production. This coefficient is infrared finite and simplifies considerably when the quark mass vanishes. Keeping always the field strength as the largest energy scale, in the high temperature regime we analyze two complementary hierarchies of scales: $q^2\ll m_f^2\ll T^2$ and $m_f^2\ll q^2\ll T^2$. In the latter, we show that the polarization tensor is infrared finite as $m_f$ goes to zero. In the former, we discuss the thermal corrections to the magnetic Debye mass.

Magnetic renormalons in a scalar self interacting $λϕ^{4}$ theory

We present an analysis about the influence of an external magnetic field on renormalons in a self interacting theory $λϕ^{4}$. In the weak magnetic field region, using an appropriate expansion for the Schwinger propagator's, we find new renormalons as poles on the real axis of the Borel plane, whose position do not depend on the magnetic field, but where the residues acquire in fact a magnetic dependence. In the strong magnetic limit, working in the lowest Landau level approximation (LLLA), these new poles are not longer present. We compare the magnetic scenario with previous results in the literature concerning thermal effects on renormalons in this theory.

A new perspective for the magnetic corrections to $π$-$π$ Scattering Lengths in the Linear Sigma Model

In this article, a new perspective for obtaining the magnetic evolution of $π-π$ scattering lengths in the frame of the linear sigma model is presented. When computing the relevant one-loop diagrams that contribute to these parameters, the sum over Landau levels --emerging from the expansion of the Schwinger propagator-- is handled in a novel way that could also be applied to the calculation of other magnetic-type corrections. Essentially, we have obtained an expansion in terms of Hurwitz Zeta functions. It is necessary to regularize our expressions by an appropriate physical subtraction when $|qB| \rightarrow 0$ ($q$ the meson charge and $B$ the magnetic field strength). In this way, we are able to interpolate between the very high magnetic field strength region, usually handled in terms of the Lowest Landau Level (LLA) approximation, and the weak field region, discussed in a previous paper by some of us, which is based on an appropriate expansion of the Schwinger propagator up to order $|qB|^{2}$. Our results for the scattering lengths parameters produce a soft evolution in a wide region of magnetic field strengths, reducing to the previously found expressions in both limits.

Magnetic field-dependence of the neutral pion mass in the linear sigma model coupled to quarks: The weak field case

We compute the neutral pion mass dependence on a magnetic field in the weak field approximation at one-loop order. The calculation is carried out within the linear sigma model coupled to quarks and using Schwinger's proper-time representation for the charged particle propagators. We find that the neutral pion mass decreases with the field strength provided the boson self-coupling magnetic field corrections are also included. The calculation should be regarded as the setting of the trend for the neutral pion mass as the magnetic field is turned on.

Thermo-magnetic evolution of the QCD strong coupling

We study the one-loop gluon polarization tensor at zero and finite temperature in the presence of a magnetic field, to extract the thermo-magnetic evolution of the strong coupling $α_s$. We analyze four distinct regimes, to wit, the small and large field cases, both at zero and at high temperature. From a renormalization group analysis we show that at zero temperature, either for small or large magnetic fields, and for a fixed transferred momentum $Q^2$, $α_s$ grows with the field strength with respect to its vacuum value. However, at high temperature and also for a fixed value of $Q^2$ we find two different cases: When the magnetic field is even larger than the squared temperature, $α_s$ also grows with the field strength. On the contrary, when the squared temperature is larger than the magnetic field, a turnover behavior occurs and $α_s$ decreases with the field strength. This thermo-magnetic behavior of $α_s$ can help explain the inverse magnetic catalysis phenomenon found by lattice QCD calculations.

Magnetic Corrections to $π$-$π$ Scattering Lengths in the Linear Sigma Model

In this article we consider the magnetic corrections to $π$-$π$ scattering lengths in the frame of the linear sigma model. For this we consider all the one loop corrections in the s, t and u channels, associate to the insertion of a Schwinger propagator for charged pions, working in the region of small values of the magnetic field. Our calculation relies on an appropriate expansion for the propagator. It turns out that the leading scattering length, $l = 0$ in the S-channel, increases for an increasing value of the magnetic field, in the isospin $I = 2$ case whereas the opposite effect is found for the $I = 0$ case. The isospin symmetry is valid because the insertion of the magnetic field occurs through the absolute value of the electric charges. The channel $I = 1$ does not receive any corrections. These results, for the channels $I = 0$ and $I = 2$ are opposite with respect to the thermal corrections found previously in the literature.

Critical end point in a thermo-magnetic nonlocal NJL model

In this article we explore the critical end point in the $T-μ$ phase diagram of a thermomagnetic nonlocal Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model in the weak field limit. We work with the Gaussian regulator, and find that a crossover takes place at $μ, B=0$. The crossover turns to a first order phase transition as the chemical potential or the magnetic field increase. The critical end point of the phase diagram occurs at a higher temperature and lower chemical potential as the magnetic field increases. This result is in accordance to similar findings in other effective models. We also find there is a critical magnetic field, for which a first order phase transition takes place even at $μ=0$.

Thermomagnetic correlation lengths of strongly interacting matter in the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model

We study the correlation length between test quarks with the same electric and color charges in the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model, considering thermal and magnetic effects. We extract the correlation length from the quark correlation function. The latter is constructed from the probability amplitude to bring a given quark into the plasma, once a previous one with the same quantum numbers is placed at a given distance apart. For temperatures below the transition temperature, the correlation length starts growing as the field strength increases to then decrease for large magnetic fields. For temperatures above the critical temperature, the correlation length continues increasing as the field strength increases. We found that such behavior can be understood as a competition between the tightening induced by the classical magnetic force versus the random thermal motion. For large enough temperatures, the increase of the occupation number contributes to the screening of the interaction between the test particles. The growth of the correlation distance with the magnetic field can be understood as due to the closer proximity between one of the test quarks and the ones popped up from vacuum, which in turn appear due to the increase of the occupation number with temperature.

Thermo-magnetic nonlocal NJL model in the real and imaginary time formalisms

In this article we study a nonlocal Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (nNJL) model with a Gaussian regulator in presence of a uniform magnetic field. We take a mixed approach to the incorporation of temperature in the model, and consider aspects of both real and imaginary time formalisms. We include confinement in the model through the quasiparticle interpretation of the poles of the propagator. The effect of the magnetic field in the deconfinement phase transition is then studied. It is found that, like with chiral symmetry restoration, magnetic catalysis occurs for the deconfinement phase transition. It is also found that the magnetic field enhances the thermodynamical instability of the system. We work in the weak field limit, i.e. $(eB)<5m_π^2$. At this level there is no splitting of the critical temperatures for chiral and deconfinement phase transitions.

Inverse magnetic catalysis from the properties of the QCD coupling in a magnetic field

We compute the vacuum one-loop quark-gluon vertex correction at zero temperature in the presence of a magnetic field. From the vertex function we extract the effective quark-gluon coupling and show that it grows with increasing magnetic field strength. The effect is due to a subtle competition between the color charge associated to gluons and the color charge associated to quarks, the former being larger than the latter. In contrast, at high temperature the effective thermo-magnetic coupling results exclusively from the contribution of the color charge associated to quarks. This produces a decrease of the coupling with increasing field strength. We interpret the results in terms of a geometrical effect whereby the magnetic field induces, on average, a closer distance between the (electrically charged) quarks and antiquarks. At high temperature, since the effective coupling is proportional only to the color charge associated to quarks, such proximity with increasing field strength makes the effective coupling decrease due to asymptotic freedom. In turn, this leads to a decreasing quark condensate. In contrast, at zero temperature both the effective strong coupling and the quark condensate increase with increasing magnetic field. This is due to the color charge associated to gluons dominating over that associated to quarks, with both having the opposite sign. Thus, the gluons induce a kind of screening of the quark color charge, in spite of the quark-antiquark proximity. The implications of these results for the inverse magnetic catalysis phenomenon are discussed.

Thermo-magnetic behavior of the quark-gluon vertex

The thermo-magnetic corrections to the quark-gluon vertex in the presence of a weak magnetic field are calculated in the frame of the Hard Thermal Loop approximation. The vertex satisfies a QED-like Ward identity with the quark self-energy calculated within the same approximation. It turns out that only the longitudinal vertex components get modified. The calculation provides a first principles result for the quark anomalous magnetic moment at high temperature in a weak magnetic field. The effective thermo-magnetic quark-gluon coupling shows a decreasing behavior as function of the field strength. This result supports the observation that the behavior of the effective quark-gluon coupling in the presence of a magnetic field is an important ingredient in order to understand the inverse magnetic catalysis phenomenon recently observed in the lattice QCD simulations.

The magnetized effective QCD phase diagram

The QCD phase diagram in the temperature versus quark chemical potential plane is studied in the presence of a magnetic field, using the linear sigma model coupled to quarks. It is shown that the decrease of the couplings with increasing field strength obtained in this model leads to the critical temperature for the phase transition to decrease with increasing field intensity (inverse magnetic catalysis). This happens provided that plasma screening is properly accounted for. It is also found that with increasing field strength the location of the critical end point (CEP) in the phase diagram moves toward lower values of the critical quark chemical potential and larger values of the critical temperature. In addition, the CEP approaches the temperature axis for large values of the magnetic field. We argue that a similar behavior is to be expected in QCD, since the physical impact of the magnetic field, regardless of strength, is to produce a spatial dimension reduction, whereby virtual quark-antiquark pairs are closer on average and thus, the strength of their interaction decreases due to asymptotic freedom.

Weak magnetic field effects on chiral critical temperature in a nonlocal Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model

In this article we study the nonlocal Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with a Gaussian regulator in the chiral limit. Finite temperature effects and the presence of a homogeneous magnetic field are considered. The magnetic evolution of the critical temperature for chiral symmetry restoration is then obtained. Here we restrict ourselves to the case of low magnetic field values, being this a complementary discussion to the exisiting analysis in nonlocal models in the strong magnetic field regime.
