Type II Perfect Absorption and Amplification Modes with Controllable Bandwidth in PT-Symmetric/Traditional Bragg Grating Combined Structures

We reveal previously unnoticed Type II perfect absorption and amplification modes of optical scattering system. These modes, in contrast to the counterparts in recent works [Phys. Rev. A 82, 031801 (2010); Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 093902 (2011).] which could be referred as Type I modes, appear at a continuous region along the real frequency axis with any frequency. The Type II modes can be demonstrated in the PT-symmetric/traditional Bragg grating combined structures. A series of exotic nonreciprocal absorption and amplification behaviours are observed in the combined structures, making them have potential for versatile devices acting simultaneously as a perfect absorber, an amplifier, and an ultra-narrowband filter. Based on the properties of Type II modes, we also propose structures with controllable perfect absorption and amplification bandwidth at any single or multiple wavelengths.

Central Limit Theorems for Supercritical Branching Markov Processes

In this paper we establish spatial central limit theorems for a large class of supercritical branching Markov processes with general spatial-dependent branching mechanisms. These are generalizations of the spatial central limit theorems proved in [1], P. for branching OU processes with binary branching mechanisms. Compared with the results of [1], our central limit theorems are more satisfactory in the sense that the normal random variables in our theorems are non-degenerate.

The electronic properties of graphene on metal modified SiO2 substrate

Based on first principles calculation, the electronic properties of graphene on metal (Ti, Ca, Ni, Mn, Co, Fe, Cr, K) modified SiO2 substrate have been studied. The results of binding energies supported graphene indicate that the metal atoms are adsorbed more stably on O surface than on Si surface of SiO2 substrate, and graphene is adsorbed very stably on metal modified substrate. The band structures of supported graphene are similar with that of suspending graphene when deposited on Co modified SiO2 surface, but change obviously with the effect of decorated Fe atoms. Interesting, a semi-metal band structure with a 1-2 eV gap in spin-up state will occur on the magnetic atoms decorated surface.

Graphene to Graphane: Novel Electrochemical Conversion

A novel electrochemical means to generate atomic hydrogen, simplifying the synthesis and controllability of graphane formation on graphene is presented. High quality, vacuum grown epitaxial graphene (EG) was used as starting material for graphane conversion. A home-built electrochemical cell with Pt wire and exposed graphene as the anode and cathode, respectively, was used to attract H+ ions to react with the exposed graphene. Cyclic voltammetry of the cell revealed the potential of the conversion reaction as well as oxidation and reduction peaks, suggesting the possibility of electrochemically reversible hydrogenation. A sharp increase in D peak in the Raman spectra of EG, increase of D/G ratio, introduction of a peak at ~2930 cm-1 and respective peak shifts as well as a sharp increase in resistance showed the successful hydrogenation of EG. This conversion was distinguished from lattice damage by thermal reversal back to graphene at 1000°C.

Role of the Mean-field in Bloch Oscillations of a Bose-Einstein Condensate in an Optical Lattice and Harmonic Trap

Using the Crank-Nicholson method, we study the evolution of a Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice and harmonic trap. The condensate is excited by displacing it from the center of the harmonic trap. The mean field plays an important role in the Bloch-like oscillations that occur after sufficiently large initial displacement. We find that a moderate mean field significantly suppresses the dispersion of the condensate in momentum space. When the mean field becomes large, soliton and vortex structures appear in the condensate wavefunction.

1-D Mott insulator transition of a Bose-Einstein condensate

The superfluid to one-dimensional Mott-insulator transition of a 87Rb Bose-Einstein condensate is demonstrated. In the experiment, we apply a one-dimensional optical lattice, formed by two laser beams with a wavelength of 852 nm, to a three dimensional BEC in a shallow trap. We use Kapitza-Dirac scattering to determine the depth of the optical lattice without knowledge of its exact geometry. We further study the dynamics of the transition as well as steady-state phase behavior specific to the one-dimensional case.

The pulling force of a single DNA molecule condensed by spermidine

In a recent experiment, a single DNA double helix is stretched and relaxed in the presence of spermidine, a short positive polyelectrolyte, and the pulling force is measured as a function of DNA extension. In a certain range of spermidine concentration, a force plateau appears whose value shows maximum as a function of spermidine concentration. We present a quantitative theory of this plateau force based on the theory of reentrant condensation and derive almost parabolic behavior of the plateau force as a function of the logarithm of the spermidine concentration in the range of condensation. Our result is in good agreement with experimental data.

Phase diagram of aggregation of oppositely charged colloids in salty water

Aggregation of two oppositely charged colloids in salty water is studied. We focus on the role of Coulomb interaction in strongly asymmetric systems in which the charge and size of one colloid is much larger than the other one. In the solution, each large colloid (macroion) attracts certain number of oppositely charged small colloids ($Z$-ion) to form a complex. If the concentration ratio of the two colloids is such that complexes are not strongly charged, they condense in a macroscopic aggregate. As a result, the phase diagram in a plane of concentrations of two colloids consists of an aggregation domain sandwiched between two domains of stable solutions of complexes. The aggregation domain has a central part of total aggregation and two wings corresponding to partial aggregation. A quantitative theory of the phase diagram in the presence of monovalent salt is developed. It is shown that as the Debye-Hückel screening radius $r_s$ decreases, the aggregation domain grows, but the relative size of the partial aggregation domains becomes much smaller. As an important application of the theory, we consider solutions of long double-helix DNA with strongly charged positive spheres (artificial chromatin). We also consider implications of our theory for in vitro experiments with the natural chromatin. Finally, the effect of different shapes of macroions on the phase diagram is discussed.
