Electron Mass Enhancement near a Nematic Quantum Critical Point in NaFe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$As

A magnetic order can be completely suppressed at zero temperature($T$), by doping carriers or applying pressure, at a quantum critical point(QCP), around which physical properties change drastically. However, the situation is unclear for an electronic nematic order that breaks rotation symmetry. Here we report nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR) studies on NaFe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$As where magnetic and nematic transitions are well separated. The NMR spectrum is sensitive to inhomogeneous magnetic fields in the vortex state, which is related to London penetration depth $λ_{\rm L}$ that measures the electron mass $m^*$. We discovered two peaks in the doping dependence of $λ_{\rm L}^2$($T\sim$0); one at $x_{\rm M}$=0.027 where the spin-lattice relaxation rate shows quantum critical behavior, and another at $x_{\rm c}$=0.032 around which the nematic transition temperature extrapolates to zero and the electrical resistivity shows a $T$-linear variation. Our results indicate that a nematic QCP lies beneath the superconducting dome at $x_{\rm c}$ where $m^*$ is enhanced. The impact of the nematic fluctuations on superconductivity is discussed.

Unusual interplay between superconductivity and field-induced charge order in YBa2Cu3Oy

We present a detailed study of the temperature (T) and magnetic field (H) dependence of the electronic density of states (DOS) at the Fermi level, as deduced from specific heat and Knight shift measurements in underdoped YBa2Cu3Oy. We find that the DOS becomes field-independent above a characteristic field H_{DOS} and that the H_{DOS}(T) line displays an unusual inflection near the onset of the long range 3D charge-density wave order. The unusual S-shape of H_{DOS}(T) is suggestive of two mutually-exclusive orders that eventually establish a form of cooperation in order to coexist at low T. On theoretical grounds, such a collaboration could result from the stabilisation of a pair-density wave state, which calls for further investigations in this region of the phase diagram

Short-distance matrix elements for $D^0$-meson mixing for $N_f=2+1$ lattice QCD

We calculate in three-flavor lattice QCD the short-distance hadronic matrix elements of all five $ΔC=2$ four-fermion operators that contribute to neutral $D$-meson mixing both in and beyond the Standard Model. We use the MILC Collaboration's $N_f = 2+1$ lattice gauge-field configurations generated with asqtad-improved staggered sea quarks. We also employ the asqtad action for the valence light quarks and use the clover action with the Fermilab interpretation for the charm quark. We analyze a large set of ensembles with pions as light as $M_π\approx 180$ MeV and lattice spacings as fine as $a\approx 0.045$ fm, thereby enabling good control over the extrapolation to the physical pion mass and continuum limit. We obtain for the matrix elements in the $\overline{\text{MS}}$-NDR scheme using the choice of evanescent operators proposed by Beneke \emph{et al.}, evaluated at 3 GeV, $\langle D^0|\mathcal{O}_i|\bar{D}^0 \rangle = \{0.0805(55)(16), -0.1561(70)(31), 0.0464(31)(9), 0.2747(129)(55), 0.1035(71)(21)\}~\text{GeV}^4$ ($i=1$--5). The errors shown are from statistics and lattice systematics, and the omission of charmed sea quarks, respectively. To illustrate the utility of our matrix-element results, we place bounds on the scale of CP-violating new physics in $D^0$~mixing, finding lower limits of about 10--50$\times 10^3$ TeV for couplings of $\mathrm{O}(1)$. To enable our results to be employed in more sophisticated or model-specific phenomenological studies, we provide the correlations among our matrix-element results. For convenience, we also present numerical results in the other commonly-used scheme of Buras, Misiak, and Urban.

Spin susceptibility of charge ordered YBa2Cu3Oy across the upper critical field

The value of the upper critical field Hc2, a fundamental characteristic of the superconducting state, has been subject to strong controversy in high-Tc copper-oxides. Since the issue has been tackled almost exclusively by macroscopic techniques so far, there is a clear need for local-probe measurements. Here, we use 17O NMR to measure the spin susceptibility $χ_{spin}$ of the CuO2 planes at low temperature in charge ordered YBa2Cu3Oy. We find that $χ_{spin}$ increases (most likely linearly) with magnetic field H and saturates above field values ranging from 20 to 40 T. This result is consistent with Hc2 values claimed by G. Grissonnanche et al. [Nat. Commun. 5, 3280 (2014)] and with the interpretation that the charge-density-wave (CDW) reduces Hc2 in underdoped YBa2Cu3Oy. Furthermore, the absence of marked deviation in $χ_{spin}(H)$ at the onset of long-range CDW order indicates that this Hc2 reduction and the Fermi-surface reconstruction are primarily rooted in the short-range CDW order already present in zero field, not in the field-induced long-range CDWorder. Above Hc2, the relatively low values of $χ_{spin}$ at T=2 K show that the pseudogap is a ground-state property, independent of the superconducting gap.

Semileptonic $B$-meson decays to light pseudoscalar mesons on the HISQ ensembles

We report the status of an ongoing lattice-QCD calculation of form factors for exclusive semileptonic decays of $B$ mesons with both charged currents ($B\toπ\ellν$, $B_s\to K\ellν$) and neutral currents ($B\toπ\ell^+\ell^-$, $B\to K\ell^+\ell^-$). The results are important for constraining or revealing physics beyond the Standard Model. This work uses MILC's (2+1+1)-flavor ensembles with the HISQ action for the sea and light valence quarks and the clover action in the Fermilab interpretation for the $b$ quark. Simulations are carried out at three lattice spacings down to $0.088$ fm, with both physical and unphysical sea-quark masses. We present preliminary results for correlation-function fits.

Observation of electronic bound states in charge-ordered YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$

Observing how electronic states in solids react to a local symmetry breaking provides insight into their microscopic nature. A striking example is the formation of bound states when quasiparticles are scattered off defects. This is known to occur, under specific circumstances, in some metals and superconductors but not, in general, in the charge-density-wave (CDW) state. Here, we report the unforeseen observation of bound states when a magnetic field quenches superconductivity and induces long-range CDW order in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$. Bound states indeed produce an inhomogeneous pattern of the local density of states $N(E_F)$ that leads to a skewed distribution of Knight shifts which is detected here through an asymmetric profile of $^{17}$O NMR lines. We argue that the effect arises most likely from scattering off defects in the CDW state, which provides a novel case of disorder-induced bound states in a condensed-matter system and an insightful window into charge ordering in the cuprates.

Electromagnetic effects on the light pseudoscalar mesons and determination of $m_u/m_d$

The MILC Collaboration has completed production running of electromagnetic effects on light mesons using asqtad improved staggered quarks. In these calculations, we use quenched photons in the noncompact formalism. We study four lattice spacings from $\approx\!0.12\:$fm to $\approx\!0.045\:$fm. To study finite-volume effects, we used six spatial lattice sizes $L/a=12$, 16, 20, 28, 40, and 48, at $a\!\approx\!0.12\:$fm. We update our preliminary values for the correction to Dashen's theorem ($ε$) and the quark-mass ratio $m_u/m_d$.

Cu-NMR study of oxygen disorder in ortho-II YBa2Cu3Oy

We show that 63Cu NMR spectra place strong constraints on both the nature and the concentration of oxygen defects in ortho-II YBa2Cu3Oy. Systematic deviation from ideal ortho-II order is revealed by the presence of inequivalent Cu sites in either full or empty chains. The results can be explained by two kinds of defects: oxygen clustering into additional chains, or fragments thereof, most likely present at all concentrations (6.4<y<6.6) and oxygen vacancies randomly distributed in the full chains for y<6.50 only. Furthermore, the remarkable reproducibility of the spectra in different samples with optimal ortho-II order (y=6.55) shows that chain-oxygen disorder, known to limit electronic coherence, is ineluctable because it is inherent to these compounds.

Orbital Order and Spin Nematicity in the Tetragonal Phase of Electron-doped Iron-Pnictides NaFe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$As

In copper-oxide and iron-based high temperature (high-$T_{\rm c}$) superconductors, many physical properties exhibit in-plane anisotropy, which is believed to be caused by a rotational symmetry-breaking nematic order, whose origin and its relationship to superconductivity remain elusive. In many iron-pnictides, a tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural transition temperature $T_{\rm s}$ coincides with the magnetic transition temperature $T_{\rm N}$, making the orbital and spin degrees of freedom highly entangled. NaFeAs is a system where $T_{\rm s}$ = 54 K is well separated from $T_{\rm N}$ = 42 K, which helps simplify the experimental situation. Here we report nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements on NaFe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$As (0 $\leq x \leq$ 0.042) that revealed orbital and spin nematicity occurring at a temperature $T^{\rm *}$ far above $T_{\rm s}$ in the tetragonal phase. We show that the NMR spectra splitting and its evolution can be explained by an incommensurate orbital order that sets in below $T^{\rm *}$ and becomes commensurate below $T_{\rm s}$, which brings about the observed spin nematicity.

Decay constants $f_B$ and $f_{B_s}$ from HISQ simulations

We give a progress report on a project aimed at a high-precision calculation of the decay constants $f_B$ and $f_{B_s}$ from simulations with HISQ heavy and light valence and sea quarks. Calculations are carried out with several heavy valence-quark masses on ensembles with 2+1+1 flavors of HISQ sea quarks at five lattice spacings and several light sea-quark mass ratios $m_{ud}/m_s$, including approximately physical sea-quark masses. This range of parameters provides excellent control of the continuum limit and of heavy-quark discretization errors. We present a preliminary error budget with projected uncertainties of 2.2~MeV and 1.5~MeV for $f_B$ and $f_{B_s}$, respectively.

Electromagnetic effects on the light hadron spectrum

For some time, the MILC Collaboration has been studying electromagnetic effects on light mesons. These calculations use fully dynamical QCD, but only quenched photons, which suffices to NLO in XPT. That is, the sea quarks are electrically neutral, while the valence quarks carry charge. For the photons we use the non-compact formalism. We have new results with lattice spacing as small as 0.045 fm and a large range of volumes. We consider how well chiral perturbation theory describes these results and the implications for light quark masses

New Superconductivity Dome in LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$ Accompanied by Structural Transition

High temperature superconductivity is often found in the vicinity of antiferromagnetism. This is also true in LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$ ($x \leq$ 0.2) and many other iron-based superconductors, which leads to proposals that superconductivity is mediated by fluctuations associated with the nearby magnetism. Here we report the discovery of a new superconductivity dome without low-energy magnetic fluctuations in LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$ with 0.25$\leq x \leq$0.75, where the maximal critical temperature $T_c$ at $x_{opt}$ = 0.5$\sim$0.55 is even higher than that at $x \leq$ 0.2. By nuclear magnetic resonance and Transmission Electron Microscopy, we show that a C4 rotation symmetry-breaking structural transition takes place for $x>$ 0.5 above $T_c$. Our results point to a new paradigm of high temperature superconductivity.

$B\toπ\ellν$ semileptonic form factors from unquenched lattice QCD and determination of $|V_{ub}|$

We compute the $B\toπ\ellν$ semileptonic form factors and update the determination of the CKM matrix element $|V_{ub}|$. We use the MILC asqtad ensembles with $N_f=2+1$ sea quarks at four different lattice spacings in the range $a \approx 0.045$~fm to $0.12$~fm. The lattice form factors are extrapolated to the continuum limit using SU(2) staggered chiral perturbation theory in the hard pion limit, followed by an extrapolation in $q^2$ to the full kinematic range using a functional $z$-parameterization. The extrapolation is combined with the experimental measurements of the partial branching fraction to extract $|V_{ub}|$. Our preliminary result is $|V_{ub}|=(3.72\pm 0.14)\times 10^{-3}$, where the error reflects both the lattice and experimental uncertainties, which are now on par with each other.

Charmed and light pseudoscalar meson decay constants from four-flavor lattice QCD with physical light quarks

We compute the leptonic decay constants $f_{D^+}$, $f_{D_s}$, and $f_{K^+}$, and the quark-mass ratios $m_c/m_s$ and $m_s/m_l$ in unquenched lattice QCD using the experimentally determined value of $f_{π^+}$ for normalization. We use the MILC highly improved staggered quark (HISQ) ensembles with four dynamical quark flavors---up, down, strange, and charm---and with both physical and unphysical values of the light sea-quark masses. The use of physical pions removes the need for a chiral extrapolation, thereby eliminating a significant source of uncertainty in previous calculations. Four different lattice spacings ranging from $a\approx 0.06$ fm to $0.15$ fm are included in the analysis to control the extrapolation to the continuum limit. Our primary results are $f_{D^+} = 212.6(0.4)({}^{+1.0}_{-1.2})\ \mathrm{MeV}$, $f_{D_s} = 249.0(0.3)({}^{+1.1}_{-1.5})\ \mathrm{MeV}$, and $f_{D_s}/f_{D^+} = 1.1712(10)({}^{+29}_{-32})$, where the errors are statistical and total systematic, respectively. The errors on our results for the charm decay constants and their ratio are approximately two to four times smaller than those of the most precise previous lattice calculations. We also obtain $f_{K^+}/f_{π^+} = 1.1956(10)({}^{+26}_{-18})$, updating our previous result, and determine the quark-mass ratios $m_s/m_l = 27.35(5)({}^{+10}_{-7})$ and $m_c/m_s = 11.747(19)({}^{+59}_{-43})$. When combined with experimental measurements of the decay rates, our results lead to precise determinations of the CKM matrix elements $|V_{us}| = 0.22487(51) (29)(20)(5)$, $|V_{cd}|=0.217(1) (5)(1)$ and $|V_{cs}|= 1.010(5)(18)(6)$, where the errors are from this calculation of the decay constants, the uncertainty in the experimental decay rates, structure-dependent electromagnetic corrections, and, in the case of $|V_{us}|$, the uncertainty in $|V_{ud}|$, respectively.

Gradient Flow Analysis on MILC HISQ Ensembles

We report on a preliminary scale determination with gradient-flow techniques on the $N_f = 2 + 1 + 1$ HISQ ensembles generated by the MILC collaboration. The ensembles include four lattice spacings, ranging from 0.15 to 0.06 fm, and both physical and unphysical values of the quark masses. The scales $\sqrt{t_0}/a$ and $w_0/a$ are computed using Symanzik flow and the cloverleaf definition of $\langle E \rangle$ on each ensemble. Then both scales and the meson masses $aM_π$ and $aM_K$ are adjusted for mistunings in the charm mass. Using a combination of continuum chiral perturbation theory and a Taylor series ansatz in the lattice spacing, the results are simultaneously extrapolated to the continuum and interpolated to physical quark masses. Our preliminary results are $\sqrt{t_0} = 0.1422(7)$fm and $w_0 = 0.1732(10)$fm. We also find the continuum mass-dependence of $w_0$.

Finite-volume effects and the electromagnetic contributions to kaon and pion masses

We report on the MILC Collaboration calculation of electromagnetic effects on light pseudoscalar mesons. The simulations employ asqtad staggered dynamical quarks in QCD plus quenched photons, with lattice spacings varying from 0.12 to 0.06 fm. Finite volume corrections for the MILC realization of lattice electrodynamics have been calculated in chiral perturbation theory and applied to the lattice data. These corrections differ from those calculated by Hayakawa and Uno because our treatment of zero modes differs from theirs. Updated results for the corrections to "Dashen's theorem" are presented.

The $D_s$, $D^+$, $B_s$ and $B$ decay constants from $2+1$ flavor lattice QCD

We present a study of the $D$ and $B$ leptonic decay constants on the MILC $N_f=2+1$ asqtad gauge ensembles using asqtad-improved staggered light quarks and clover heavy quarks in the Fermilab interpretation. Our previous analysis \cite{Bazavov:2011aa} computed the decay constants at lattice spacings $a \approx 0.14, 0.11$ and $0.083$ fm. We have extended the simulations to finer $a \approx 0.058$ and $0.043$ fm lattice spacings, and have also increased statistics; this allows us to address many important sources of uncertainty. Technical advances include a two-step two-point fit procedure, better tuning of the heavy quark masses and a better determination of the axial-vector current matching. The present analysis remains blinded, so here we focus on the improvements and their predicted impact on the error budget compared to the prior analysis.
