The role of singular spinor fields in a torsional gravity, Lorentz-violating, framework

In this work, we consider a generalization of quantum electrodynamics including Lorentz violation and torsional-gravity, in the context of general spinor fields as classified in the Lounesto scheme. Singular spinor fields will be shown to be less sensitive to the Lorentz violation, as far as couplings between the spinor bilinear covariants and torsion are regarded. In addition, we prove that flagpole spinor fields do not admit minimal coupling to the torsion. In general, mass dimension four couplings are deeply affected when singular flagpole spinors are considered, instead of the usual Dirac spinors. We also construct a mapping between spinors in the covariant framework and spinors in Lorentz symmetry breaking scenarios, showing how one may transliterate spinors of different classes between the two cases. Specific examples concerning the mapping of Dirac spinor fields in Lorentz violating scenarios into flagpole and flag-dipole spinors with full Lorentz invariance (including the cases of Weyl and Majorana spinors) are worked out.

Compact Q-balls

In this work we deal with non-topological solutions of the Q-ball type in two space-time dimensions, in models described by a single complex scalar field that engenders global symmetry. The main novelty is the presence of stable Q-balls solutions that live in a compact interval of the real line and appear from a family of models controlled by two distinct parameters. We find analytical solutions and study their charge and energy, and show how to control the parameters to make the Q-balls classically and quantum mechanically stable.

Torsion Effects in Braneworld Scenarios

We present gravitational aspects of braneworld models endowed with torsion terms both in the bulk and on the brane. In order to investigate a conceivable and measurable gravitational effect, arising genuinely from bulk torsion terms, we analyze the variation in the black hole area by the presence of torsion. Furthermore, we extend the well known results about consistency conditions in a framework that incorporates brane torsion terms. It is shown, in a rough estimate, that the resulting effects are generally suppressed by the internal space volume. This formalism provides manageable models and their possible ramifications into some aspects of gravity in this context, and cognizable corrections and physical effects as well.

Some Thoughts on Geometries and on the Nature of the Gravitational Field

In this paper we show how a gravitational field generated by a given energy-momentum distribution (for all realistic cases) can be represented by distinct geometrical structures (Lorentzian, teleparallel and non null nonmetricity spacetimes) or that we even can dispense all those geometrical structures and simply represent the gravitational field as a field in the Faraday's sense living in Minkowski spacetime. The explicit Lagrangian density for this theory is given and the field equations (which are Maxwell's like equations) are shown to be equivalent to Einstein's equations. Some examples are worked in detail in order to convince the reader that the geometrical structure of a manifold (modulus some topological constraints) is conventional as already emphasized by Poincare long ago, and thus the realization that there are disctints geometrical representations (and a physical model related to a deformation of the continuum supporting Minkowski spacetime) for any realistic gravitational field strongly suggests that we must investigate the origin of its physical nature. We hope that this paper will convince readers that this is indeed the case.

Notes on the Two-brane Model with Variable Tension

Motivated by possible extensions of the braneworld models with two branes, we investigate some consequences of a variable brane tension using the well established results on consistency conditions. By a slight modification of the usual stress-tensor used in order to derive the braneworld sum rules, we find out some important constraints obeyed by time dependent brane tensions. In particular it is shown that the tensions of two Randall-Sundrum like branes obeying, at the same time, an Eotvos law, aggravate the fine tuning problem. Also, it is shown that if the hidden brane tension obeys an Eotvos law, then the visible brane has a mixed behavior allowing a bouncing-like period at early times while it is dominated by an Eotvos law nowadays. To finalize, we discuss some qualitative characteristics which may arise in the scope of dynamical brane tensions, as anisotropic background and branons production.

Perturbative self-interacting scalar field theory: a differential equation approach

We revisit the investigation about the partition function related to a ϕ^4-scalar field theory on a n-dimensional Minkowski spacetime, which is shown to be a self-interacting scalar field theory at least in 4-dimensional Minkowski spacetime. After rederiving the analytical calculation of the perturbative expansion coefficients and also the approximate values for suitable limits using Stirling's formulae, which consists of Witten's proposed questions, solved by P. Deligne, D. Freed, L. Jeffrey, and S. Wu, we investigate a spherically symmetric scalar field in a n-dimensional Minkowski spacetime. For the first perturbative expansion coefficient it is shown how it can be derived a modified Bessel equation (MBE), which solutions are investigated in one, four, and eleven-dimensional Minkowski spacetime. The solutions of MBE are the first expansion coefficient of the series associated with the partition function of ϕ^4-scalar field theory. All results are depicted.

Spacetime Deformations and Electromagnetism in Material Media

This paper is intended to investigate the relation between electrodynamics in anisotropic material media and its analogous formulation in an spacetime, with non-null Riemann curvature tensor. After discussing the electromagnetism via chiral differential forms, we point out the optical activity of a given material medium, closely related to topological spin, and the Faraday rotation, associated to topological torsion. Both quantities are defined in terms of the magnetic potential and the electric and magnetic fields and excitations. We revisit some properties of material media and the associated Green dyadics. Some related features of ferrite are also investigated. It is well-known that the constitutive tensor is essentially equivalent to the Riemann curvature tensor. In order to investigate the propagation of electromagnetic waves in material media, we prove that it is analogous to consider the electromagnetic wave propagation in the vacuum, but this time in a curved spacetime, which is obtained by a deformation of the lorenztian metric of Minkowski spacetime. Spacetime deformations leave invariant the form of Maxwell equations. Also, there exists a close relation between Maxwell equations in curved spacetime and in an anisotropic material medium, indicating that electromagnetism and spacetime properties are deeply related. Besides, the geometrical aspects of wave propagation can be described by an effective geometry which represents a deformation of the lorentzian metric of Minkowski spacetime.

On Conformal d'Alembert-Like Equations

Using conformal coordinates associated with projective conformal relativity we obtain a conformal Klein-Gordon partial differential equation. As a particular case we present and discuss a conformal `radial' d'Alembert-like equation. As a by-product we show that this `radial' equation can be identified with a one-dimensional Schrödinger-like equation in which the potential is exactly the second Pöschl-Teller potential.
