Non-relativistic Reduction of Spinors, New Currents and their Algebra

A specific mapping is introduced to reduce the Dirac action to the non-relativistic (Pauli - Schrödinger) action for spinors. Using this mapping, the structures of the vector and axial vector currents in the non-relativistic theory are obtained. The implications of the relativistic Ward identities in the non-relativistic limit are discussed. A new non-abelian type of current in the Pauli - Schrödinger theory is obtained. As we show, this is essential for the closure of the algebra among the usual currents. The role of parity in the non-relativistic theory is also discussed.

Meissner effect in holographic superconductors with Dirac-Born-Infeld electrodynamics

In this paper, we have investigated the Meissner effect of holographic superconductors in the presence of Dirac-Born-Infeld electrodynamics. The matching method is applied to obtain the critical magnetic field and the critical temperature. The critical magnetic field obtained from this investigation shows the effects of the DBI parameter $b$ and differs from that obtained from Born electrodynamics because of the extra $\vec{E}.\vec{B}$ term in the Dirac-Born-Infeld theory. It is observed that the critical magnetic field increases in Dirac-Born-Infeld theory compared to that in the Born theory.

A New Action for Nonrelativistic Particle in Curved Background

We obtain a new form for the action of a nonrelativistic particle coupled to Newtonian gravity. The result is different from that existing in the literature which, as shown here, is riddled with problems and inconsistencies. The present derivation is based on the formalism of galilean gauge theory, introduced by us as an alternative method of analysing nonrelativistic symmetries in gravitational background.

Galilean gauge theory from Poincare gauge theory

We provide an exact mapping between the Galilian gauge theory, recently advocated by us \cite{BMM1, BMM2, BM}, and the Poincare gauge theory. Applying this correspondence we provide a vielbein approach to the geometric formulation of Newton's gravity where no ansatze or additional conditions are required.

Noncommutative fluid and Growing Modes of Inhomogeneity in (Newtonian) Cosmology

Time evolution of modes of density contrast, in particular the growing modes, dictate the structure formation in Universe. In this paper we explicitly show how (spatial) Non-Commutativity (NC) can affect the behavior of the modes, that is we compute NC corrected power law profiles of the density contrast modes. We develop a generalized fluid model that lives in NC space. The dynamical equations of fluid, namely the continuity and Euler equations receive NC contributions. When mapped to comoving coordinates these generate the NC extended versions of continuity and Friedmann equations for cosmology. Introducing cosmological perturbations finally yield the NC corrected evolution of density contrast modes. The construction of the NC fluid model from first principles and development of the formal aspects of its Hamiltonian formulation have been presented in the first part.

Late-time acceleration driven by shift-symmetric Galileon in the presence of Torsion

A shift-symmetric Galileon model in presence of spacetime torsion has been constructed for the first time. This has been realized by localizing (or, gauging) the Galileon symmetry in flat spacetime in an appropriate manner. We have applied the above model to study the evolution of the universe at a cosmological scale. Interestingly, for a wide class of torsional structures we have shown that the model leads to late time cosmic acceleration. Furthermore, as torsion vanishes, our model reproduces the standard results.

Milne boost from galilean gauge theory

Physical origin of Milne boost invariance of the Newton Cartan spacetime is traced to the effect of local Galilean boosts in its metric structure, using galilean gauge theory. Specifically, we do not require any gauge field to understand Milne boost invariance.

On the subtelties of nonrelativistic reduction and applications

Various subtleties and problems associated with nonrelativistic (NR) reduction of a scalar field theory to the Schroedinger theory are discussed. Contrary to the usual approaches that discuss the mapping among the equations of motion or the actions, we highlight the mapping among the space time generators. Using a null reduction we show the embedding of the conformal generators of the Schroedinger theory to that of a complex scalar theory in one higher dimension. As applications we reveal the conformal symmetry in hydrodynamics and the obtention of NR diffeomorphism symmetry from the relativistic one. A geometrical connection based on Horava-Lifshitz and Newton-Cartan spacetime is discussed.

On the equivalence among stress tensors in a gauge-fluid system

In this paper we bring out the subtleties involved in the study of a first order relativistic field theory with auxiliary field variables playing an essential role. In particular we discuss the nonisentropic Eulerian (or Hamiltonian) fluid model. Interactions are introduced by coupling the fluid to a {\it dynamical} Maxwell ($U(1)$) gauge field. This dynamical nature of the gauge field is crucial in showing the equivalence, on the physical subspace, of the stress tensor derived from two definitions, {\it{ie.}} the canonical (Noether) one and the symmetric one. In the conventional equal-time formalism, we have shown that the generators of the spacetime transformations obtained from these two definitions agree, modulo the Gauss constraint. This equivalence in the physical sector has been achieved only because of the dynamical nature of the gauge fields. Subsequently we have explicitly demonstrated the validity of the Schwinger condition. A detailed analysis of the model in lightcone formalism has also been done where several interesting features are revealed.

Taming galileons in curved spacetime

Localising the galileon symmetry along with Poincare symmetry we have found a version of galileon model coupled with curved spacetime which retains the internal galileon symmetry in covariant form. Also, the model has second order equations of motion.

Cosmological implications of shift symmetric Galileon field

A ghost-free metric formulation of the recently proposed covariant Galileon model \cite{RPgal} which retains the internal shift symmetry has been constructed. This presents a new result because the covariant Galileon models introduced so far in the literature lacks the full Galileon symmetry. We demonstrate that the same general procedure is applicable to all the Galileon interaction terms and the resulting ghost-free Galileon action respecting internal shift symmetry cannot predict the late time acceleration of the universe. However, weakly breaking the shift symmetry in the covariant Galileon Lagrangian, allows us to include an appropriate potential term which can explain late time acceleration, in accordance with recent findings in the literature.

On the question of symmetries in non-relativistic diffeomorphism invariant theories

A novel algorithm is provided to couple a Galilean invariant model with curved spatial background by taking nonrelativistic limit of a unique minimally coupled relativistic theory, which ensures Galilean symmetry in the flat limit and canonical transformation of the original fields. That the twin requirements are fulfilled is ensured by a new field, the existence of which was demonstrated recently from Galilean gauge theory. The ambiguities and anomalies concerning the recovery of Galilean symmetry in the flat limit of spatial non relativistic diffeomorphic theories, reported in the literature, are focused and resolved from a new angle.

Thermogeometric phase transition in a unified framework

Using geomterothermodynamics (GTD), we investigate the phase transition of black hole in a metric independent way. We show that for any black hole, curvature scalar (of equilibrium state space geometry) is singular at the point where specific heat diverges. Previously such a result could only be shown by taking specific examples on a case by case basis. A different type of phase transition, where inverse specific heat diverges, is also studied within this framework. We show that in the latter case, metric (of equilibrium state space geometry) is singular instead of curvature scalar. Since a metric singularity may be a coordinate artifact, we propose that GTD indicates that it is the singularity of specific heat and not inverse specific heat which indicates a phase transition of black holes.

Torsional Newton-Cartan geometry from Galilean gauge theory

Using the recently advanced Galilean gauge theory (GGT) we give a comprehensive construction of torsional Newton Cartan geometry. The coupling of a Galilean symmetric model with background NC geometry following GGT is illustrated by a free nonrelativistic scalar field theory. The issue of spatial diffeomorphisn \cite{SW, BMM3} is focussed from a new angle. The expression of the torsionful connection is worked out which is in complete parallel with the relativistic theory. Also smooth transition of the connection to its well known torsionless expression is demonstrated. A complete (implicit) expression of the torsion tensor for the Newton Cartan spacetime is provided where the first order variables occur in a suggestive way. The well known result for the temporal part of torsion is reproduced from our expression.

New approach to nonrelativistic ideal magnetohydrodynamics

We provide a novel action principle for nonrelativistic ideal magnetohydrodynamics in the Eulerian scheme exploiting a Clebsch-type parametrisation. Both Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulations have been considered. Within the Hamiltonian framework, two complementary approaches have been discussed using Dirac's constraint analysis. In one case the Hamiltonian is canonical involving only physical variables but the brackets have a noncanonical structure, while the other retains the canonical structure of brackets by enlarging the phase space. The special case of incompressible magnetohydrodynamics is also considered where, again, both the approaches are discussed in the Hamiltonian framework. The conservation of the stress tensor reveals interesting aspects of the theory.

Canonical formulation for nonrelativistic Euler fluids and Schwinger type conditions

We present a new approach, based on Noether's energy-momentum tensor, to construct the lagrangian for nonrelativistic nonisentropic Euler fluids. An advantage of this approach is that it naturally provides a generalised Clebsh decomposition for the fluid velocity. This is used to develop a hamiltonian formulation inolving a noncanonical algebra. This algebra is very simply obtained from the symplectic structure. It is used to show that the components of the Noether's energy-momentum tensor satisfy certain Schwinger-type relations. These relations, which are reminiscent of corresponding relations in relativistic field theory, are new.
