Light Higgs Mass Bound in SUSY Left-Right Models

We show that in supersymmetric left-right models (SUSYLR), the upper bound on the lightest neutral Higgs mass can be appreciably higher than that in minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM). The exact magnitude of the bound depends on the scale of parity restoration and can be 10-20 GeV above the MSSM bound if mass of the right-handed gauge boson $W_R$ is in the TeV range. An important implication of our result is that since SUSYLR models provide a simple realization of seesaw mechanism for neutrino masses, measurement of the Higgs boson mass could provide an independent probe of a low seesaw scale.

General CP Violation in Minimal Left-Right Symmetric Model and Constraints on the Right-Handed Scale

In minimal left-right symmetric theories, the requirement of parity invariance allows only one complex phase in the Higgs potential and one in the Yukawa couplings, leading to a two-phase theory with both spontaneous and explicit CP violations. We present a systematic way to solve the right-handed quark mixing matrix analytically in this model and find that the leading order solution has the same hierarchical structure as the left-handed CKM matrix with one more CP-violating phase coming from the complex Higgs vev. Armed with this explicit right-handed mixing matrix, we explore its implications for flavor changing and conserving processes in detail, low-energy CP-violating observables in particular. We report an improved lower bound on the $W_R$ mass of 2.5 TeV from $ΔM_K$ and $ΔM_{B}$, and a somewhat higher bound (4 TeV) from kaon decay parameters $ε$, $ε'$, and neutron electric dipole moment. The new bound on the flavor-changing neutral Higgs mass is 25 TeV.

Gauged Discrete Symmetries and Proton Stability

We discuss the results of a search for anomaly free Abelian Z_N discrete symmetries that lead to automatic R-parity conservation and prevents dangerous higher-dimensional proton decay operators in simple extensions of the minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model (MSSM) based on the left-right symmetric group, the Pati-Salam group and SO(10). We require that the superpotential for the models have enough structures to be able to give correct symmetry breaking to MSSM and potentially realistic fermion masses. We find viable models in each of the extensions and for all the cases, anomaly freedom of the discrete symmetry restricts the number of generations.

Quark-Lepton Complementarity in Unified Theories

As pointed out by many authors, recent observations are consistent with an intriguing relation between the Cabibbo angle $θ_C$ and the solar neutrino mixing angle $θ_{12}$, namely $θ_{12} \simeq π/4 - θ_C$. Such quark-lepton complementarity (QLC) may be a signal of an underlying quark-lepton unification at short distances. We discuss possible ways to realize this relation in realistic quark-lepton unification theories by identifying a minimal set of operators that lead to QLC while remaining consistent with other known data. The purpose of this paper is to present the first elements of a unified model at the GUT scale capable of predicting the QLC relation. A generic prediction of our proposed class of models is the new relation for the lepton mixing angle $θ_{13} \simeq θ_C$, which allows these models to be confirmed or excluded by the current generation of neutrino oscillation experiments.

Lepton Electric Dipole Moments, Supersymmetric Seesaw and Leptogenesis Phase

We calculate the lepton electric dipole moments in a class of supersymmetric seesaw models and explore the possibility that they may provide a way to probe some of the CP violating phases responsible for the origin of matter via leptogenesis. We show that in models where the right handed neutrino masses, $M_R$ arise from the breaking of local B-L symmetry by a Higgs field with B-L=2, some of the leptogenesis phases can lead to enhancement of the lepton dipole moments compared to the prediction of models where $M_R$ is either directly put in by hand or is a consequence of a higher dimensional operator.

A minimal three generation seesaw scenario for LSND

We show that in the minimal three generation seesaw models for neutrinos, the presence of leptonic $(L_e+L_μ-L_τ)\times S_2$ symmetry leads to one of the right handed neutrinos remaining massless. This state can then be identified with the sterile neutrino required for a simultaneous understanding of solar, atmospheric and LSND observations. We present a gauge model where the presence of higher dimensional operators originating from Planck scale physics lead to a realistic 2+2 mixed scenario that fits all oscillation data. The model predicts a range for the mixing angle $U_{e3}$ and an effective mass for neutrinos emitted in tritium decay, which can be used to test this model.

Models for Geometric CP Violation with Extra Dimensions

In a recent paper, two of us (D.C. and R.N.M.) proposed a new way to break CP symmetry geometrically using orbifold projections. The mechanism can be realized in the five dimensional brane bulk picture. In this paper, we elaborate on this proposal and provide additional examples of models of this type. We also note the phenomenological implications of some of these models.

Mirror Dark Matter and Core Density of Galaxies

We present a particle physics realization of a recent suggestion by Spergel and Steinhardt that collisional but dissipationless dark matter may resolve the core density problem in dark matter-dominated galaxies such as the dwarf galaxies. The realization is the asymmetric mirror universe model introduced to explain the neutrino puzzles and the microlensing anomaly. The mirror baryons are the dark matter particles with the desired properties. The time scales are right for resolution of the core density problem and formation of mirror stars (MACHOs observed in microlensing experiments). The mass of the region homogenized by Silk damping is between a dwarf and a large galaxy.

SIMP (Strongly Interacting Massive Particle) Search

We consider laboratory experiments that can detect stable, neutral strongly interacting massive particles (SIMPs). We explore the SIMP annihilation cross section from its minimum value (restricted by cosmological bounds) to the barn range, and vary the mass values from a GeV to a TeV. We also consider the prospects and problems of detecting such particles at the Tevatron.

Mirror Matter MACHOs

We propose that the massive compact halo objects (MACHOs) observed in the recent microlensing experiments with an apparent best fit mass of about $0.5 M_{\odot}$ are objects made out of ``mirror'' baryonic matter rather than familiar baryons. Such a possibility arises naturally within the framework of mirror matter models proposed recently to accomodate the sterile neutrinos that seem necessary to solve all the neutrino puzzles simultaneusly. We show that for mirror matter parameters that fit the neutrino observations, the maximum mass of mirror stars are of order $0.5 M_{\odot}$ and their main sequence lifetime is much less than the age of the universe. They are therefore likely to be black holes. Mirror matter machos have the advantage that they do not suffer from the problems encountered in the conventional red, brown or white dwarf interpretation. The calculations also apply to the question of how the world of familiar matter would be different if all fundamental mass parameters were.

A New Doublet-Triplet Splitting Mechanism for Supersymmetric SO(10) and Implications for Fermion Masses

We present a new mechanism for doublet-triplet splitting in supersymmetric SO(10) models using a missing vev pattern which is different from the one used in the currently popular Dimopoulos-Wilczek method. In our method, the doublets in a {$\bf 16,\bar{16}$} pair are the ones split from the rest of the multiplet and are then mixed with the doublets from one or two {\bf 10}'s giving rise to the doublets {$\bf H_u$} and {$\bf H_d$} of the standard model. This approach provides a natural way to understand why top quark is so much heavier than the bottom quark. It also enables us to generate both hierarchical and nonhierarchical pattern for neutrino masses, the latter being of interest if neutrino is the hot component of the dark matter of the universe. We construct a simple, realistic model based on this idea. The model uses only simple representations, has no unwanted flat directions and maintains coupling constant unification as a prediction.

Nucleosynthesis constraints on massive, stable, strongly interacting particles

We find constraints on heavy, stable, strongly interacting massive particles (X) from searches for anomalous nuclei containing them, formed during primordial nucleosynthesis. Using existing data, we obtain a limit on the abundance ratio $C_X\equiv n_X/n_B$ in the range of $3\times 10^{-8}$ to $3\times 10^{-13}$ for masses up to 10 TeV if the $X-N$ interaction is sufficiently strong to bind in low Z nuclei. We also find a rough lower limit on the $X-N$ interaction that implies binding in nuclei with $A\geq 200$ over much of the $M_X$ range of interest, and address the relative abundance of such anomalous nuclei on Earth.

Grand Unification of the Sterile Neutrino

The simplest way to simultaneously understand all existing indications of neutrino oscillations from solar and atmospheric neutrino deficits and the LSND experiment, seems to be to postulate a sterile neutrino. We present a realistic grand unified model based on the gauge group $SO(10)\times SO(10)^\prime$ that leads to the desired masses and mixings for the sterile and the known neutrinos needed to understand the above observations while fitting those of the known charged fermions. The model is a grand unified realization of the recently proposed idea that the sterile neutrino is the lightest neutrino of a mirror sector of the universe which has identical matter and gauge content as the standard model. The two SO(10)'s operate on the two sectors in a mirror symmetric way and are connected by a mixed Higgs representations whose net effect is to connect the superheavy right handed neutrinos of the two sectors.

P, C and Strong CP in Left-Right Supersymmetric Models

We systematically study the connection between P, C and strong CP in the context of both non-supersymmetric and supersymmetric left-right theories. We find that the solution to the strong CP problem requires both supersymmetry and parity breaking scales to be around the weak scale.

Supernova Constraints on a Superlight Gravitino

In supergravity models with low supersymmetry breaking scale the gravitinos can be superlight with mass in the micro-eV to keV range. In such a case, gravitino emission provides a new cooling mechanism for protoneutron stars and therefore can provide constraints on the mass of the superlight gravitino. This happens because the coupling to matter of superlight gravitinos is dominated by its goldstino component, whose coupling to matter is inversely proportional to the scale of supersymmetry breaking and increases as the gravitino mass decreases. Present observations therefore provide lower limits on the gravitino mass. Using recently revised goldstino couplings, we find that the two dominant processes in supernova cooling are $e^+e^-\to \tilde{G}\tilde{G}$ and $γ+e^-\to e^-\tilde{G}\tilde{G}$. They lead to lower limits on the supersymmetry breaking scale $Λ_{S}$ from 160 to 500 GeV for core temperatures 30 to 60 MeV and electron chemical potentials 200 to 300 MeV. The corresponding lower limits on the gravitino mass are $.6 - 6\times 10^{-6}$ eV.

A Supersymmetric Composite Model of Quarks and Leptons

We present a class of supersymmetric models with complete generations of composite quarks and leptons using recent non-perturbative results for the low energy dynamics of supersymmetric QCD. In these models, the quarks arise as composite "mesons" and the leptons emerge as composite "baryons." The quark and lepton flavor symmetries are linked at the preon level. Baryon number violation is automatically suppressed by accidental symmetries. We give some speculations on how this model might be made realistic.

Can Long Range Anomalous Neutrino Interactions Account for the Measured Tritium Beta Decay Spectrum ?

Recent experimental searches for neutrino mass in tritium beta decay yield a negative value for the mass-squared of the electron neutrino. If this effect is genuine, then it is hard to understand it using conventional particle physics ideas as embodied in the standard model or its simple extensions that have been widely discussed. We consider the possibility that there is a hidden anomalous long range interaction of neutrinos that is responsible for this effect and study the phenomenological consistency of this idea. We also discuss how such interactions may arise in extensions of the standard model.
