Two partial monoid structures on a set

It is well-known that small categories have equivalent descriptions as partial monoids. We provide a formulation of partial monoid and partial monoid homomorphism involving $s$ and $t$ instead of identities and then following a recent investigation into involutive double categories, we prove that a double category is equivalent to a set equipped with two partial monoid structures in which all structure maps $(s,t,\circ)$ are partial monoid homomorphisms. We discuss the light this purely algebraic perspective sheds on the symmetries of these structures and its applications. Iteration of the procedure leads also to a pure algebraic formulation of the notion of $n$-fold category.

C*-bundle dynamical systems

C*-bundle dynamical systems are introduced and their rôle within the theory of C*-subalgebras and Fell bundles is investigated. A C*-bundle dynamical system involves an action of a 1-parameter group of "spatial automorphisms" of the C*-bundle together with a notion of covariance with respect to the diffeomorphisms of the base manifold, and turns out to define a class of examples of Arveson's $A$-dynamical systems. An embedding invariant for non-commutative C*-subalgebras (equivalent to a groupoid 2-cocycle by construction) emerges and has presentation analogous to a partition function towards a potential algebraic formulation of quantum gravity.

Spectral C*-categories and Fell bundles with path-lifting

Following Crane's suggestion that categorification should be of fundamental importance in quantising gravity, we show that finite dimensional even $S^o$-real spectral triples over $\bbc$ are already nothing more than full C*-categories together with a self-adjoint section of their domain and range maps, while the latter are equivalent to unital saturated Fell bundles over pair groupoids equipped with a path-lifting operator given by a normaliser. Interpretations can be made in the direction of quantum Higgs gravity. These geometries are automatically quantum geometries and we reconstruct the classical limit, that is, general relativity on a Riemannian spin manifold.

Applications to quantum gravity from C*-bundles

Applications to quantum gravity of some results in C*-algebras are developed. We open by describing why algebra may be an integral aspect of quantum gravity. By interpreting the inner automorphisms of a C*-algebra as families of parallel transports on a C*-bundle, we define a notion of generalised connection for C*-bundles, implying that C*-bundle dynamical systems can be used to study a Dirac operator's spectrum and also the generator of the modular group. The fact that their dynamics preserves the bundle structure, means that C*-bundle dynamical systems are relativistic systems. We describe a 2-category to unify Einstein's two uses of the phrase general covariance, give concrete examples and construct a generally covariant quantum system. Motivations include the point of view of virtual points hiding in fibres of a C*-bundle over $X$ and that physical geometry is instrinsically non-local.

Non-commutative fermion mass matrix and gravity

The first part is an introductory description of a small cross-section of the literature on algebraic methods in non-perturbative quantum gravity with a specific focus on viewing algebra as a laboratory in which to deepen understanding of the nature of geometry. This helps to set the context for the second part, in which we describe a new algebraic characterisation of the Dirac operator in non-commutative geometry and then use it in a calculation on the form of the fermion mass matrix. Assimilating and building on the various ideas described in the first part, the final part consists of an outline of a speculative perspective on (non-commutative) quantum spectral gravity. This is the second of a pair of papers so far on this project.

Double Fell bundles over discrete double groupoids with folding

In this paper we construct the notions of double Fell bundle and double C*-category for possible future use as tools to describe noncommutative spaces, in particular in finite dimensions. We identify the algebra of sections of a double Fell line bundle over a discrete double groupoid with folding with the convolution algebra of the latter. This turns out to be what one might call a double C*-algebra. We generalise the Gelfand-Naimark-Segal construction to double C*-categories and we form the dual category for a saturated double Fell bundle using the Tomita-Takesaki involution.

Finite temperature corrections and embedded strings in noncommutative geometry and the standard model with neutrino mixing

The recent extension of the standard model to include massive neutrinos in the framework of noncommutative geometry and the spectral action principle involves new scalar fields and their interactions with the usual complex scalar doublet. After ensuring that they bring no unphysical consequences, we address the question of how these fields affect the physics predicted in Weinberg-Salam theory, particularly in the context of the Electroweak phase transition. Applying the Dolan-Jackiw procedure, we calculate the finite temperature corrections, and find that the phase transition is first order. The new scalar interactions significantly improve the stability of the Electroweak Z string, through the ``bag'' phenomenon described by Watkins and Vachaspati. (Recently cosmic strings have climbed back into interest due to new evidence). Sourced by static embedded strings, an internal space analogy of Cartan's torsion is drawn, and a possible Higgs-force-like `gravitational' effect of this non-propagating torsion on the fermion masses is described. We also check that the field generating the Majorana mass for the $ν_R$ is non-zero in the physical vacuum.
