Neutrino Mass Matrices with Generalized CP Symmetries and Texture Zeros

We investigate the properties of neutrino mass matrices that incorporate texture zeros and generalized CP symmetries associated with tribimaximal mixing. By combining these approaches, we derive predictive neutrino mass matrices and explore their implications for mass hierarchies, mixing angles, and CP-violating phases. We find that the three angles defining the generalized CP symmetries have narrow allowed ranges. We also obtain distinct correlations between the three mixing angles and the CP-violating phases that distinguish the various texture patterns from one another. Moreover, we compute the effective neutrino mass for neutrinoless double beta decay and the sum of neutrino masses. Our results highlight the predictability and testability of neutrino mass matrices with generalized CP symmetry.

A new texture of neutrino mass matrix with three constraints

We present a new texture of neutrino mass matrix having three complex relations among its elements and study in detail the phenomenological implications. A characteristic feature of the resulting neutrino mass matrix is that the atmospheric neutrino mixing angle is predicted to lie in a very narrow region near $45^{\circ}$. We illustrate how such a form of the neutrino mass matrix can be realized using the non-Abelian flavor symmetry $A_4$ in the framework of type-I+II seesaw mechanism.

Zeros in the magic neutrino mass matrix

We study the phenomenological implications of the presence of two zeros in a magic neutrino mass matrix. We find that only two such patterns of the neutrino mass matrix are experimentally acceptable. We express all the neutrino observables as functions of one unknown phase $ϕ$ and two known parameters $Δm^{2}_{12}$, $r=Δm^{2}_{12}/Δm^{2}_{23}$. In particular, we find $\sin^2 θ_{13}=(2/3)r/(1+r)$. We also present a mass model for the allowed textures based upon the group $A_{4}$ using type I+II see-saw mechanism.

New mixing schemes for (3+1) neutrinos

We propose new mixing schemes for (3+1) neutrinos which describe mixing among active-active and active-sterile neutrinos. The mixing matrix in these mixing schemes can be factored into a zeroth order flavor symmetric part and another part representing small perturbations needed for generating non-zero $U_{e3}$, nonmaximal $θ_{23}$, CP violation and active-sterile mixing. We find interesting correlations amongst various neutrino mixing angles and, also, calculate the parameter space for various parameters.

Trimaximal mixing with a texture zero

We analyze neutrino mass matrices having one texture zero, assuming that the neutrino mixing matrix has either its first (TM$_1$) or second (TM$_2$) column identical to that of the tribimaximal mixing matrix. We found that all the six possible one texture zero neutrino mass matrices are compatible with the present neutrino oscillation data when combined with TM$_1$ or TM$_2$ mixing. These textures have interesting predictions for the presently unknown parameters such as the effective Majorana neutrino mass, the Dirac CP violating phase and the neutrino mass scale. We also present a way to theoretically realize some of these textures using $A_4$ symmetry within the framework of type-I+II seesaw mechanism.

Neutrino mass matrices with three or four vanishing cofactors and non diagonal charged lepton sector

We investigate the texture structures of lepton mass matrices with four (five) non-zero elements in the charged lepton mass matrix and three (four) vanishing cofactors in the neutrino mass matrix. Using weak basis transformations, all possible textures for three and four vanishing cofactors in $M_ν$ are grouped into 7 classes and predictions for the unknown parameters such as the Dirac CP violating phase and the effective Majorana mass for the phenomenologically allowed textures have been obtained. We, also, illustrate how such texture structures can be realized using discrete Abelian flavor symmetries.

Implications of texture zeros for a variant of tribimaximal Mixing

We study the phenomenological implications of the presence of two texture zeros in the neutrino mass matrix assuming that the neutrino mixing matrix has its first column identical to that of the tribimaximal mixing matrix. Only two patterns of this kind are compatible with the experimental data. These textures have definite predictions for the neutrino observables that are testable in future neutrino experiments.

Deviations in Tribimaximal Mixing From Sterile Neutrino Sector

We explore the possibility of generating a non-zero $U_{e3}$ element of the neutrino mixing matrix from tribimaximal neutrino mixing by adding a light sterile neutrino to the active neutrinos. Small active-sterile mixing can provide the necessary deviation from tribimaximal mixing to generate a non-zero $θ_{13}$ and atmospheric mixing $θ_{23}$ different from maximal. Assuming no CP-violation, we study the phenomenological impact of sterile neutrinos in the context of current neutrino oscillation data. The tribimaximal pattern is broken in such a manner that the second column of tribimaximal mixing remains intact in the neutrino mixing matrix.

Neutrino mass matrices with one texture zero and a vanishing neutrino mass

Assuming Majorana nature of neutrinos, we investigate the singular one texture zero neutrino mass matrices in the flavor basis. We find that for the normal mass ordering with $m_1=0$, all the six one texture zero classes are now ruled out at 3$σ$ confidence level, whereas for inverted mass ordering with $m_3=0$ only four classes out of total six can accommodate the latest neutrino oscillation data at 3$σ$ confidence level. Moreover, only two classes can accommodate the present data at 1$σ$ confidence level. We examine the phenomenological implications of the allowed classes for the effective Majorana mass, Dirac and Majorana CP-violating phases. Working within the framework of type-I seesaw mechanism, we present simple discrete Abelian symmetry models leading to all the phenomenologically allowed classes.

Near Maximal Atmospheric Neutrino Mixing in Neutrino Mass Models with Two Texture Zeros

The implications of a large value of the effective Majorana neutrino mass for a class of two texture zero neutrino mass matrices have been studied in the flavor basis. It is found that these textures predict near maximal atmospheric neutrino mixing angle in the limit of large effective Majorana neutrino mass. It is noted that this prediction is independent of the values of solar and reactor neutrino mixing angles. We present the symmetry realization of these textures using the discrete cyclic group $Z_3$. It is found that the texture zeros realised in this work remain stable under renormalization group running of the neutrino mass matrix from the seesaw scale to the electroweak scale, at one loop level.

Charged Lepton Corrections to Scaling Neutrino Mixing

Assuming Majorana nature of neutrinos, a general expression for the charged lepton corrections to scaling neutrino mixing has been obtained in the context of three flavor neutrino oscillations. Non-zero value of the reactor mixing angle is nicely accommodated. It is noted that scaling in the effective neutrino mass matrix is equivalent to the presence of two vanishing minors corresponding to first row elements of the effective neutrino mass matrix. A value of reactor mixing angle which is fairly close to the currently measured best fit is predicted for charged lepton corrections of the order of the Cabbibo angle. We, also, present symmetry realization of such texture structures in the framework of type-I seesaw mechanism with non-diagonal charged lepton mass matrix using discrete Abelian flavor symmetry.

Hybrid Textures of the Right-Handed Majorana Neutrino Mass Matrix

We perform a systematic study of neutrino mass matrices having a vanishing cofactor and an equality between two cofactors of the mass matrix. Such texture structures of the effective neutrino mass matrix arise from type-I seesaw mechanism when the Dirac neutrino mass matrix is diagonal with equal elements and the right-handed Majorana neutrino mass matrix has hybrid textures with one equality of matrix elements and one zero matrix element. For three right-handed neutrinos there are sixty possible hybrid textures out of which only six are excluded by the present experimental data. We show that such textures can be derived using discrete symmetries. The predictions of experimentally allowed textures are examined for unknown parameters such as the effective Majorana mass of the electron neutrino and the Dirac-type CP-violating phase.

Neutrino Mass Matrices with Two Equalities Between the Elements or Cofactors

We study the implications of the existence of two equalities between the elements or cofactors of the neutrino mass matrix. There are sixty five structures of this type for each case. Phenomenological implications for unknown parameters like the effective Majorana mass of the electron neutrino and CP-violating phases are examined for the viable cases. To illustrate how such forms of the neutrino mass matrices may be realized, we also present a simple $A_4$ model for one of the classes in each case.

Broken S3 Symmetry in the Neutrino Mass Matrix and Non-Zero theta_{13}

We study the effects of breaking S3 symmetry in the neutrino mass matrix for the masses and mixing matrix of neutrinos. At zeroth order the model gives degenerate neutrino masses and accommodates tribimaximal mixing. We introduce perturbations in terms of a small and complex parameter. The perturbations are introduced in a manner such that the S3 symmetry is broken by its elements in the same representation. Successive perturbations introduce mass splitting, sizable non-zero reactor mixing angle and CP violation. This scheme of breaking S3 symmetry can reproduce a relatively large reactor mixing angle as suggested by the recent T2K results. The effective neutrino mass is predicted to be large which is testable in the ongoing and forthcoming neutrinoless double beta decay experiments.

Near Maximal Atmospheric Mixing in Neutrino Mass Matrices with Two Vanishing Minors

In the flavor basis there are seven cases of two vanishing minors in the neutrino mass matrix which can accommodate the present neutrino oscillation data including the recent T2K data. It is found that two of these cases, namely $B_5$ and $B_6$ predict near maximal atmospheric neutrino mixing in the limit of large effective neutrino mass. This feature remains irrespective of the values of solar and reactor mixing angles. A non-zero reactor mixing angle is naturally accommodated in these textures.

Parametrizing the Lepton Mixing Matrix in terms of Charged Lepton Corrections

We consider a parametrization of the lepton mixing matrix in which the deviations from maximal atmospheric mixing and vanishing reactor mixing are obtained in terms of small corrections from the charged lepton sector. Relatively large deviations for the reactor mixing angle from zero as indicated by T2K experiment can be obtained in this parametrization. We are able to further reduce the number of complex phases, thus, simplifying the analysis. In addition, we have obtained the sides of unitarity triangles and the vacuum oscillation probabilities in this parametrization. The Jarlskog rephasing invariant measure of CP violation at the leading order has a single phase difference which can be identified as Dirac-type CP violating phase in this parametrization.

Broken $S_3$ Symmetry in the Neutrino Mass Matrix

We explore the feasibility of the discrete flavor symmetry $S_3$ to explain the pattern of neutrino masses and mixings. In the flavor basis, the neutrino mass matrix is taken to be invariant under $S_3$ symmetry at the zeroth order. The effects of breaking $S_3$ symmetry by matrices invariant under different $S_2$ subgroups of $S_3$ are studied. The resulting retrocirculant perturbation matrix leads to the perturbed $S_3$ neutrino mass matrix having a trimaximal eigenvector as suggested by the solar neutrino data. It is found that after the third order perturbation the neutrino mixings only depend on the perturbation parameter and are consistent with the current experimental data leading to very small deviations from tribimaximal mixing. These perturbations in the $S_3$ invariant neutrino mass matrix result in interesting interplay between the solar and the reactor neutrino mixing angles. We also get a strongly suppressed range of effective Majorana mass which lies well within the reach of the ongoing experiments.

Zero Textures of the Neutrino Mass Matrix from Cyclic Family Symmetry

We present the symmetry realization of the phenomenologically viable Frampton-Glashow-Marfatia (FGM) two zero texture neutrino mass matrices in the flavor basis within the framework of the type (I+II) seesaw mechanism natural to SO(10) grand unification. A small Abelian cyclic symmetry group $Z_3$ is used to realize these textures except for class C for which the symmetry is enlarged to $Z_4$. The scalar sector is restricted to the Standard Model (SM) Higgs doublet to suppress the flavor changing neutral currents. Other scalar fields used for symmetry realization are at the most two scalar triplets and, in some cases, a complex scalar singlet. Symmetry realization of one zero textures has, also, been presented.
