AUTOPILOT VQA: Benchmarking Vision-Language Models for Incident-Centric Dashcam Understanding

Recent advances in Vision-Language Models, Large Language Models, and Multimodal Large Language Models have improved autonomous driving tasks such as scene understanding, decision making, trajectory prediction, and visual question answering. However, evaluating whether these models can reliably reason about safety-critical incidents remains challenging. To address this gap, we present AUTOPILOT-VQA, an incident-centric visual question answering benchmark for dashcam video understanding. The dataset evaluates different systems through structured questions designed around real-world driving incidents and near-incidents. The benchmark covers diverse safety-relevant categories, including weather and lighting conditions, traffic environment, road layout, road surface state, signage, involved entities, accident occurrence, impact location, and avoidability-related reasoning. By requiring models to answer grounded questions about both contextual scene properties and event-level incident details, AUTOPILOT-VQA moves beyond object recognition toward temporally grounded, safety-aware reasoning. The dataset is released as part of the AUTOPILOT CVPR 2026 competition and provides a standardized benchmark for assessing the reliability of autonomous driving systems in different scenarios. Our benchmark support developments for more interpretable, robust, and safety-conscious vision-language systems for real-world autonomous driving.

Depth of free-by-cyclic groups

For a free group automorphism, we prove that its poset of attracting lamination orbits is a canonical invariant of the associated mapping torus. That is, if a free-by-cyclic group splits as a mapping torus in two different ways, then the corresponding automorphisms have isomorphic posets of lamination orbits. Further, we show that the lamination depth, the size of the largest chain in this poset, is a commensurability invariant of the free-by-cyclic group.

Conformal dimension bounds for certain Coxeter group Bowditch boundaries

We give upper and lower bounds on the conformal dimension of the Bowditch boundary of a Coxeter group with defining graph a complete graph and edge labels at least three. The lower bounds are obtained by quasi-isometrically embedding Gromov's round trees in the Davis complex. The upper bounds are given by exhibiting a geometrically finite action on a CAT(-1) space and bounding the Hausdorff dimension of the visual boundary of this space. Our results imply that there are infinitely many quasi-isometry classes within each infinite family of such Coxeter groups with edge labels bounded from above. As an application, we prove there are infinitely many quasi-isometry classes among the family of hyperbolic groups with Pontryagin sphere boundary. Combining our results with work of Bourdon--Kleiner proves the conformal dimension of the boundaries of hyperbolic groups in this family achieves a dense set in $(1,\infty)$.

Combinatorial isoperimetric inequality for the free factor complex

We show that the free factor complex of the free group of rank greater than or equal to 4 does not satisfy a combinatorial isoperimetric inequality: that is, for every natural number N, there is a loop c_N of length 4 in the free factor complex such that the number of 2-simplices required to fill c_N grows at least as a linear function of N. To prove the result, we construct a coarsely Lipschitz function from the `upward link' of a free factor to the set of integers.

Orientable maps and polynomial invariants of free-by-cyclic groups

We relate the McMullen polynomial of a free-by-cyclic group to its Alexander polynomial. To do so, we introduce the notion of an orientable fully irreducible outer automorphism $φ$ and use it to characterize when the homological stretch factor of $φ$ is equal to its geometric stretch factor.

Limit sets of unfolding paths in Outer space

We construct an unfolding path in Outer space which does not converge in the boundary, and instead it accumulates on the entire 1-simplex of projectivized length measures on a non-geometric arational $\mathbb{R}$-tree T. We also show that T admits exactly two dual ergodic projective currents.

Hierarchically hyperbolic groups and uniform exponential growth

We give several sufficient conditions for uniform exponential growth in the setting of virtually torsion-free hierarchically hyperbolic groups. For example, any hierarchically hyperbolic group that is also acylindrically hyperbolic has uniform exponential growth. In addition, we provide a quasi-isometric characterization of hierarchically hyperbolic groups without uniform exponential growth. To achieve this, we gain new insights on the structure of certain classes of hierarchically hyperbolic groups. Our methods give a new unified proof of uniform exponential growth for several examples of groups with notions of non-positive curvature. In particular, we obtain the first proof of uniform exponential growth for certain groups that act geometrically on CAT(0) cubical spaces of dimension 3 or more. Under additional hypotheses, we show that a quantitative Tits alternative holds for hierarchically hyperbolic groups.

Groups acting on CAT(0) cube complexes with uniform exponential growth

We study uniform exponential growth of groups acting on CAT(0) cube complexes. We show that groups acting without global fixed points on CAT(0) square complexes either have uniform exponential growth or stabilize a Euclidean subcomplex. This generalizes the work of Kar and Sageev that considers free actions. Our result lets us show uniform exponential growth for certain groups that act improperly on CAT(0) square complexes, namely, finitely generated subgroups of the Higman group and triangle-free Artin groups. We also obtain that non-virtually abelian groups acting freely on CAT(0) cube complexes of any dimension with isolated flats that admit a geometric group action have uniform exponential growth.

Planar lattice subsets with minimal vertex boundary

A subset of vertices of a graph is minimal if, within all subsets of the same size, its vertex boundary is minimal. We give a complete, geometric characterization of minimal sets for the planar integer lattice X. Our characterization elucidates the structure of all minimal sets, and we are able to use it to obtain several applications. We characterize uniquely minimal sets of X: those which are congruent to any other minimal set of the same size. We also classify all efficient sets of X: those that have maximal size amongst all such sets with a fixed vertex boundary. We define and investigate the graph G of minimal sets whose vertices are congruence classes of minimal sets of X and whose edges connect vertices which can be represented by minimal sets that differ by exactly one vertex. We prove that G has exactly one infinite component, has infinitely many isolated vertices and has bounded components of arbitrarily large size. Finally, we show that all minimal sets, except one, are connected.

Homotopy type of the complex of free factors of a free group

We show that the complex of free factors of a free group of rank n > 1 is homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres of dimension n-2. We also prove that for n > 1, the complement of (unreduced) Outer space in the free splitting complex is homotopy equivalent to the complex of free factor systems and moreover is (n-2)-connected. In addition, we show that for every non-trivial free factor system of a free group, the corresponding relative free splitting complex is contractible.

Cannon--Thurston maps for CAT(0) groups with isolated flats

Mahan Mitra (Mj) proved Cannon--Thurston maps exist for normal hyperbolic subgroups of a hyperbolic group. We prove that Cannon--Thurston maps do not exist for infinite normal hyperbolic subgroups of non-hyperbolic CAT(0) groups with isolated flats with respect to the visual boundaries. We also show Cannon--Thurston maps do not exist for infinite infinite-index normal CAT(0) subgroups with isolated flats in non-hyperbolic CAT(0) groups with isolated flats. We obtain a structure theorem for the normal subgroups in these settings and show that outer automorphism groups of hyperbolic groups have no purely atoroidal $\mathbb{Z}^2$ subgroups.

Loxodromic elements in the cyclic splitting complex and their centralizers

We show that an outer automorphism acts loxodromically on the cyclic splitting complex if and only if it has a filling lamination and no generic leaf of the lamination is carried by a vertex group of a cyclic splitting. This is the analog for the cyclic splitting complex of Handel-Mosher's theorem on loxodromics for the free splitting complex. We also show that such outer automorphisms have virtually cyclic centralizers.

Loxodromic elements for the relative free factor complex

In this paper we prove that a fully irreducible outer automorphism relative to a non-exceptional free factor system acts loxodromically on the relative free factor complex as defined by Handel and Mosher. We also prove a north-south dynamic result for the action of such outer automorphisms on the closure of relative outer space.

Relative Currents

In this paper we define currents relative to a free factor system. We prove that a fully irreducible outer automorphism relative to a free factor system acts with uniform north-south dynamics on a subspace of the space of projective relative currents.
