Steady-state coherences by composite system-bath interactions

We identify sufficient conditions on the structure of the interaction Hamiltonian between a two-level quantum system and a thermal bath which, without any external drive or coherent measurement, guarantee the generation of steady-state coherences (SSC). The SSC this way obtained remarkably turn out to be independent on the initial state of the system, which therefore could be even taken initially incoherent. We characterize in detail this phenomenon first analytically in the weak coupling regime for two paradigmatic models, and then numerically in more complex systems without any assumption on the coupling strength. In all these cases we find that SSC become increasingly significant as the bath is cooled down. These results can be therefore directly verified in many experimental platforms.

Nonclassical light from large ensemble of trapped ions

The vast majority of physical objects we are dealing with are almost exclusively made of atoms. Due to their discrete level structure, single atoms have proved to be emitters of light which is incompatible with the classical description of electromagnetic waves. We demonstrate this incompatibility for atomic fluorescence when scaling up the size of the source ensemble, which consists of trapped atomic ions, by several orders of magnitude. The presented measurements of nonclassical statistics on light unconditionally emitted from ensembles containing up to more than a thousand ions promise further scalability to much larger emitter numbers. The methodology can be applied to a broad range of experimental platforms focusing on the bare nonclassical character of single isolated emitters.

Quantum Non-Gaussian Multiphoton Light

We propose an experimental method of recognizing quantum non-Gaussian multiphoton states. This is a native quantum property of Fock states, the fundamental quantum states with a constant number of particles. Our method allows experimental development and characterization of higher Fock states of light, reaching even beyond the current technical limits of their generation. We experimentally demonstrate that it is capable of distinguishing realistic quantum non-Gaussian light with the mean number of photons up to 5 despite detection efficiency of 50 %. We also provide evidence that our method can help to distinguish the number of single-photon emitters based only on their collective emission.

Brownian motion surviving in the unstable cubic potential and the role of Maxwell's demon

Trajectories of an overdamped particle in a highly unstable potential diverge so rapidly, that the variance of position grows much faster than its mean. Description of the dynamics by moments is therefore not informative. Instead, we propose and analyze local directly measurable characteristics, which overcome this limitation. We discuss the most probable particle position (position of the maximum of the probability density) and the local uncertainty in an unstable cubic potential, both in the transient regime and in the long-time limit. The maximum shifts against the acting force as a function of time and temperature. Simultaneously, the local uncertainty does not increase faster than the observable shift. In the long-time limit, the probability density naturally attains a quasi-stationary form. We explain this process as a stabilization via the measurement-feedback mechanism, the Maxwell demon, which works as an entropy pump. Rules for measurement and feedback naturally arise from basic properties of the unstable dynamics. Observed thermally induced effects are inherent in unstable systems. Their detailed understanding will stimulate the development of stochastic engines and amplifiers and later, their quantum counterparts.

Multiphoton nonclassical light from clusters of single-photon emitters

We study nonclassical features of multiphoton light emitted by clusters of single-photon emitters. As signatures of nonclassicality, we use violation of inequalities for normalized correlation functions of different orders or the probabilities of multiphoton detection. In experiment, for clusters of 2 to 14 colloidal CdSe/CdS dot-in-rods we observe nonclassical behavior, which gets even more pronounced for larger clusters.

Continuous-variable quantum key distribution with a leakage from state preparation

We address side-channel leakage in a trusted preparation station of continuous-variable quantum key distribution with coherent and squeezed states. We consider two different scenaria: multimode Gaussian modulation, directly accessible to an eavesdropper, or side-channel loss of the signal states prior to the modulation stage. We show the negative impact of excessive modulation on both the coherent- and squeezed-state protocols. The impact is more pronounced for squeezed-state protocols and may require optimization of squeezing in the case of noisy quantum channels. Further, we demonstrate that coherent-state protocol is immune to side-channel signal state leakage prior to modulation, while the squeezed-state protocol is vulnerable to such attacks, becoming more sensitive to the noise in the channel. In the general case of noisy quantum channels the signal squeezing can be optimized to provide best performance of the protocol in the presence of side-channel leakage prior to modulation. Our results demonstrate that leakage from the trusted source in continuous-variable quantum key distribution should not be underestimated and squeezing optimization is needed to overcome coherent state protocols.

General implementation of arbitrary nonlinear quadrature phase gates

We propose general methodology of deterministic single-mode quantum interaction nonlinearly modifying single quadrature variable of a continuous variable system. The methodology is based on linear coupling of the system to ancillary systems subsequently measured by quadrature detectors. The nonlinear interaction is obtained by using the data from the quadrature detection for dynamical manipulation of the coupling parameters. This measurement-induced methodology enables direct realization of arbitrary nonlinear quadrature interactions without the need to construct them from the lowest-order gates. Such nonlinear interactions are crucial for more practical and efficient manipulation of continuous quadrature variables as well as qubits encoded in continuous variable systems.

Light-matter quantum interferometry with homodyne detection

We investigated the estimation of an unknown Gaussian process (containing displacement, squeezing and phase-shift) applied to a matter system. The state of the matter system is not directly measured; instead, we measure an optical mode which interacts with the system. We propose an interferometric setup exploiting a beam-splitter-type of light-matter interaction with homodyne detectors and two methods of estimation. We demonstrate the superiority of the interferometric setup over alternative non-interferometric schemes. Importantly, we show that even limited coupling strength and a noisy matter system are sufficient for very good estimation. Our work opens the way to many future investigations of light-matter interferometry for experimental platforms in quantum metrology of matter systems.

Sufficiency of quantum non-Gaussianity for discrete-variable quantum key distribution over noisy channel

Quantum key distribution can be enhanced and extended if nonclassical single-photon states of light are used. We study a connection between the security of quantum key distribution and quantum non-Gaussianity of light arriving at the receiver's detection system after the propagation through a noisy quantum channel, being under full control of an eavesdropper performing general collective attacks. We show that while quantum nonclassicality exhibited by the light arriving at the receiver's station is a necessary indication of the security of the discrete-variable protocols, quantum non-Gaussianity can be a sufficient indication of their security. Therefore, checking for non-Gaussianity of this light by performing standard autocorrelation function measurement can be used for prior verification of the usability of prepare-and-measure schemes. It can play similar role to the prior verification of the quantum correlations sufficient to violate Bell inequalities for entanglement-based protocols.

Deterministic nonlinear phase gates induced by a single qubit

We propose deterministic realizations of nonlinear phase gates by repeating non-commuting Rabi interactions feasible between a harmonic oscillator and {\em only} a single two-level ancillary qubit. We show explicitly that the key nonclassical features of the states after the ideal cubic phase gate and the quartic phase gate are reproduced faithfully by the engineered operators. This theoretical proposal completes the universal set of operators in continuous variable quantum computation.

Deterministic nonlinear gates with oscillators mediated by a qubit

Quantum nonlinear operations for harmonic oscillator systems play a key role in the development of analog quantum simulators and computers. Since a variety of strong highly nonlinear operations are unavailable in the existing physical systems, it is a common practice to approximate them by using conditional measurement-induced methods. The conditional approach has several drawbacks, the most severe of which is the exponentially decreasing success rate of the strong and complex nonlinear operations. We show that by using a suitable two level system sequentially interacting with the oscillator, it is possible to resolve these issues and implement a nonlinear operation both nearly deterministically and nearly perfectly. We explicitly demonstrate the approach by constructing self-Kerr and cross-Kerr couplings in a realistic situation, which require a feasible dispersive coupling between the two-level system and the oscillator.

Robustness of quantum key distribution with discrete and continuous variables to channel noise

We study the robustness of quantum key distribution protocols using discrete or continuous variables to the channel noise. We introduce the model of such noise based on coupling of the signal to a thermal reservoir, typical for continuous-variable quantum key distribution, to the discrete-variable case. Then we perform a comparison of the bounds on the tolerable channel noise between these two kinds of protocols using the same noise parametrization, in the case of implementation which is perfect otherwise. Obtained results show that continuous-variable protocols can exhibit similar robustness to the channel noise when the transmittance of the channel is relatively high. However, for strong loss discrete-variable protocols are superior and can overcome even the infinite-squeezing continuous-variable protocol while using limited nonclassical resources. The requirement on the probability of a single-photon production which would have to be fulfilled by a practical source of photons in order to demonstrate such superiority is feasible thanks to the recent rapid development in this field.

Optomechanical oscillator controlled by variation in its heat bath temperature

We propose a generation of a low-noise state of optomechanical oscillator by a temperature dependent force. We analyze the situation in which a quantum optomechanical oscillator (denoted as the membrane) is driven by an external force (produced by the piston). Both systems are embedded in a common heat bath at certain temperature $T$. The driving force the piston exerts on the membrane is bath temperature dependent. Initially, for $T=T_0$, the piston is linearly coupled to the membrane. The bath temperature is then reversibly changed to $T\neq T_0$. The change of temperature shifts the membrane, but simultaneously also increases its fluctuations. The resulting equilibrium state of the membrane is analyzed from the point of view of mechanical, as well as of thermodynamic characteristics. We compare these characteristics of membrane and derive their intimate connection. Next, we cool down the thermal noise of the membrane, bringing it out of equilibrium, still being in the contact with heat bath. This cooling retains the effective canonical Gibbs state with the effective temperature $T^\star$. In such case we study the analogs of the equilibrium quantities for low-noise mechanical states of the membrane.

Photon-phonon-photon transfer in optomechanics

We consider transfer of a highly nonclassical quantum state through an optomechanical system. That is we investigate a protocol consisting of sequential upload, storage and reading out of the quantum state from a mechanical mode of an optomechanical system. We show that provided the input state is in a test-bed single-photon Fock state, the Wigner function of the recovered state can have negative values at the origin, which is a manifest of nonclassicality of the quantum state of the macroscopic mechanical mode and the overall transfer protocol itself. Moreover, we prove that the recovered state is quantum non-Gaussian for wide range of setup parameters. We verify that current electromechanical and optomechanical experiments can test this complete transfer of single photon.

Pulsed quantum continuous-variable optoelectromechanical transducer

We propose a setup allowing to entangle two directly non-interacting radiation modes applying four sequential pulsed quantum resonant interactions with a noisy vibrational mode of a mechanical oscillator which plays the role of the mediator. We analyze Gaussian entanglement of the radiation modes generated by the transducer and confirm that the noisy mechanical mode can mediate generation of entanglement. The entanglement, however, is limited if the interaction gains are not individually optimized. We prove the robustness of the transducer to optical losses and the influence of the mechanical bath and propose the ways to achieve maximal performance through the individual optimization.

Deterministic nonclassicality for quantum mechanical oscillators in thermal states

Quantum nonclassicality is the basic building stone for the vast majority of quantum information applications and methods of its generation are at the forefront of research. One of the obstacles any method needs to clear is the looming presence of decohorence and noise which act against the nonclassicality and often erase it completely. In this paper we show that nonclassical states of a quantum harmonic oscillators initially in thermal equilibrium states can be deterministically created by coupling it to a single two level system. This can be achieved even in the absorption regime in which the two level system is initially in the ground state. The method is resilient to noise and it may actually benefit from it, as witnessed by the systems with higher thermal energy producing more nonclassical states.

Direct observation of phase sensitive Hong-Ou-Mandel interference

Quality of individual photons and their ability to interfere is traditionally tested by measuring the Hong-Ou-Mandel photon bunching effect. However, this phase insensitive measurement only tests the particle aspect of the quantum interference. Motivated by these limitations, we formulate a witness capable of recognizing both the quality and the coherence of two photons from a single set of measurements. We exploit the conditional nonclassical squeezing which is sensitive to both the quality of the single photons and their indistinguishability and we show that it can be used to irectly reveal both the particle and the wave aspects of the quantum interference. Finally, we experimentally test the witness by applying it to a pair of independent single photons generated on demand.

Estimation of nonclassical independent Gaussian processes by classical interferometry

We propose classical interferometry with low-intensity thermal radiation for the estimation of nonclassical independent Gaussian processes in material samples. We generally determine the mean square error of the phase-independent parameters of an unknown Gaussian process, considering a noisy source of radiation the phase of which is not locked to the pump of the process. We verify the sufficiency of passive optical elements in the interferometer, active optical elements do not improve the quality of the estimation. We also prove the robustness of the method against the noise and loss in both interferometric channels and the sample. The proposed method is suitable even for the case when a source of radiation sufficient for homodyne detection is not available.
