Ollivier Ricci curvature for general graph Laplacians: Heat equation, Laplacian comparison, non-explosion and diameter bounds

Discrete time random walks on a finite set naturally translate via a one-to-one correspondence to discrete Laplace operators. Typically, Ollivier curvature has been investigated via random walks. We first extend the definition of Ollivier curvature to general weighted graphs and then give a strikingly simple representation of Ollivier curvature using the graph Laplacian. Using the Laplacian as a generator of a continuous time Markov chain, we connect Ollivier curvature with the heat equation which is strongly related to continuous time random walks. In particular, we prove that a lower bound on the Ollivier curvature is equivalent to a certain Lipschitz decay of solutions to the heat equation. This is a discrete analogue to a celebrated Ricci curvature lower bound characterization by Renesse and Sturm. Our representation of Ollivier curvature via the Laplacian allows us to deduce a Laplacian comparison principle by which we prove non-explosion and improved diameter bounds.

The Feller Property for Graphs

The Feller property concerns the preservation of the space of functions vanishing at infinity by the semigroup generated by an operator. We study this property in the case of the Laplacian on infinite graphs with arbitrary edge weights and vertex measures. In particular, we give conditions for the Feller property involving curvature-type quantities for general graphs, characterize the property in the case of model graphs, and give some comparison results to the model case.

Volume Growth, Spectrum and Stochastic Completeness of Infinite Graphs

We study the connections between volume growth, spectral properties and stochastic completeness of locally finite graphs. For a class of graphs with a very weak spherical symmetry we give a condition which implies both stochastic incompleteness and discreteness of the spectrum. We then use these graphs to give some comparison results for both stochastic completeness and estimates on the bottom of the spectrum for general locally finite graphs.

Heat Kernel and Essential Spectrum of Infinite Graphs

We study the existence and uniqueness of the heat kernel on infinite, locally finite, connected graphs. For general graphs, a uniqueness criterion, shown to be optimal, is given in terms of the maximal valence on spheres about a fixed vertex. A sufficient condition for non-uniqueness is also presented. Furthermore, we give a lower bound on the bottom of the spectrum of the discrete Laplacian and use this bound to give a condition ensuring that the essential spectrum of the Laplacian is empty.

Stochastic Completeness of Graphs

In this thesis, we analyze the stochastic completeness of a heat kernel on graphs which is a function of three variables: a pair of vertices and a continuous time, for infinite, locally finite, connected graphs. For general graphs, a sufficient condition for stochastic completeness is given in terms of the maximum valence on spheres about a fixed vertex. That this result is optimal is shown by studying a particular family of trees. We also prove a lower bound on the bottom of the spectrum for the discrete Laplacian and use this lower bound to show that in certain cases the Laplacian has empty essential spectrum.
