Canonical and phenomenological formulations of spin hydrodynamics

Two formulations of relativistic hydrodynamics of particles with spin 1/2 are compared. The first approach, dubbed the canonical one, uses expressions for the energy-momentum and spin tensors that have properties that follow a direct application of Noether's theorem, which yields a totally antisymmetric spin tensor. The other one is based on a simplified form of the spin tensor and is commonly used in the current literature under the name of a phenomenological approach. We show that these two frameworks are equivalent, i.e., they can be directly connected by a suitably defined pseudogauge transformation, only if the first framework is initially improved by a suitable modification of the energy-momentum tensor (addition of a divergence-free term that cannot be interpreted as a pseudogauge). Our analysis uses arguments related to the positivity of entropy production. The latter turns out to be equivalent for the improved canonical and phenomenological frameworks.

Pseudogauge freedom and the SO(3) algebra of spin operators

The energy-momentum and spin tensors for a given theory can be replaced by alternative expressions that obey the same conservation laws for the energy, linear momentum, as well as angular momentum but, however, differ by the local redistribution of such quantities (with global energy, linear momentum, and angular momentum remaining unchanged). This arbitrariness is described in recent literature as the pseudogauge freedom or symmetry. In this letter, we analyze several pseudogauges used to formulate the relativistic hydrodynamics of particles with spin 1/2 and conclude that the canonical version of the spin tensor has an advantage over other forms as only the canonical definition defines the spin operators that fulfill the SO(3) algebra of angular momentum. This result sheds new light on the results encountered in recent papers demonstrating pseudogauge dependence of various physical quantities. It indicates that for spin-polarization observables, the canonical version is fundamentally better suited for building a connection between theory and experiment.

Relativistic second-order spin hydrodynamics: an entropy-current analysis

We present a new derivation of Israel-Stewart-like relativistic second-order dissipative spin hydrodynamic equations using the entropy current approach. In our analysis, we consider a general energy-momentum tensor with symmetric and anti-symmetric parts. Moreover, the spin tensor, which is not separately conserved, has a simple phenomenological form that is antisymmetric only in the last two indices. Apart from the evolution equations for energy density, fluid flow, and spin density, we also find relaxation-type dynamical equations for various dissipative currents. The latter are consistently derived within the second-order theory as gradient corrections to the energy-momentum and spin tensors. We argue that this approach correctly reproduces the corresponding Navier-Stokes limit of spin hydrodynamic equations. Throughout our analysis, the spin chemical potential is considered a $\mathcal{O}(\partial)$ quantity in the hydrodynamic gradient expansion and reduces to thermal vorticity in the global equilibrium. New coefficients appearing in the generalized spin hydrodynamic equations are undetermined and can only be evaluated within a proper underlying microscopic theory of a given system.

Relativistic Spin Magnetohydrodynamics

Starting from kinetic theory description of massive spin-1/2 particles in presence of magnetic field, equations for relativistic dissipative non-resistive magnetohydrodynamics are obtained in the small polarization limit. We use a relaxation time approximation for the collision kernel in the relativistic Boltzmann equation and calculate non-equilibrium corrections to the phase-space distribution function of spin-polarizable particles. We demonstrate that our framework naturally leads to emergence of the well known Einstein-de Hass and Barnett effects. We obtain multiple transport coefficients and show, for the first time, that the coupling between spin and magnetic field appear at gradient order in hydrodynamic equations.

Boost invariant spin hydrodynamics within the first order in derivative expansion

Boost-invariant equations of spin hydrodynamics confined to the first-order terms in gradients are numerically solved. The spin equation of state, relating the spin density tensor to the spin chemical potential, is consistently included in the first order. Depending on its form and the structure of the spin transport coefficients, we find solutions which are both stable and unstable within the considered evolution times of 10 fm/c. These findings are complementary to the recent identification of stable and unstable modes for perturbed uniform spin systems described by similar hydrodynamic frameworks.

Stability studies of first order spin-hydrodynamic frameworks

We study the stability of first-order dissipative spin-hydrodynamic frameworks. We considered two different first-order dissipative spin-hydrodynamic frameworks. The first one considers the spin chemical potential ($ω^{αβ}$) to be first order ($\mathcal{O}(\partial)$) in the hydrodynamic gradient expansion. The hydrodynamic gradient ordering of the spin chemical potential is a debatable issue within the frameworks of spin hydrodynamics. Therefore as a second choice, we also consider the spin hydrodynamic equations with $ω^{αβ}\sim\mathcal{O}(1)$. We find that for both frameworks, at the level of linear perturbations some spin modes can be unstable. To remove these generic instabilities we consider the Frenkel condition. We argue that Frenkel condition helps get rid of the unstable solutions in both cases, but with a physical drawback for the case where $ω^{μν}\sim\mathcal{O}(\partial)$.

Spin waves in spin hydrodynamics

The propagation properties of spin degrees of freedom are analyzed in the framework of relativistic hydrodynamics with spin based on the de Groot--van Leeuwen--van Weert definitions of the energy-momentum and spin tensors. We derive the analytical expression for the spin wave velocity for arbitrary statistics and show that it goes to half the speed of light in the ultra-relativistic limit. We find that only the transverse degrees of freedom propagate, analogously to electromagnetic waves. Finally, we consider the effect of dissipative corrections and calculate the damping coefficients for the case of Maxwell-Jüttner statistics.

On the interpretation of $Λ$ spin polarization measurements

The physics interpretation of the recent measurements of the spin polarization of $Λ$ hyperons produced in relativistic heavy-ion collisions is discussed. We suggest that the polarization measured in the $Λ$ rest frame should be projected along the direction of the total angular momentum that is first transformed to the same frame, and only then averaged over $Λ$'s with different momenta in the center-of-mass frame. While this procedure does not affect the current measurements done in a broad transverse-momentum range, it may become important (represent a correction of about 10\%) for the most energetic hyperons under study (with transverse momenta reaching 4-5 GeV/c). The proposed treatment is generally more appropriate for relativistic $Λ$'s. Throughout the paper, we deliver explicit expressions for various boosts, rotations, and transformations of angular distributions, which may help to compare model predictions with the experimental results.

Quantum baryon number fluctuations in subsystems of a hot and dense relativistic gas of fermions

Quantum features of the baryon number fluctuations in subsystems of a hot and dense relativistic gas of fermions are analyzed. We find that the fluctuations in small systems are significantly increased compared to their values known from the statistical physics, and diverge in the limit where the system size goes to zero. The numerical results obtained for a broad range of the thermodynamic parameters expected in heavy-ion collisions are presented. They can be helpful to interpret and shed new light on the experimental data.

Spin polarization dynamics in the non-boost-invariant background

Space-time evolution of spin polarization within the framework of hydrodynamics with spin based on de Groot - van Leeuwen - van Weert forms of energy-momentum and spin tensors is studied. Due to the non-boost invariant flow in the system the spin polarization components couple to each other implying some effects on the spin polarization observables. We study transverse-momentum and rapidity dependence of mean spin polarization vector for $Λ$ hyperons. Our results show qualitative agreement for rapidity dependence of the global spin polarization with the experiments and other models. The quadrupole structure of the longitudinal component at midrapidity is not found, however, as compared to the results for Bjorken expansion, some non-trivial signal at forward rapidities is observed.

Quantum fluctuations of energy in subsystems of a hot relativistic gas

We derive a formula that defines quantum fluctuations of energy in subsystems of a hot relativistic gas. For small subsystem sizes we find substantial increase of fluctuations compared to those known from standard thermodynamic considerations. However, if the size of the subsystem is sufficiently large, we reproduce the result for energy fluctuations in the canonical ensemble. Our results are subsequently used in the context of relativistic heavy-ion collisions to introduce limitations of the concepts such as classical energy density or fluid element. In the straightforward way, our formula can be applied in other fields of physics, wherever one deals with hot and relativistic matter.

Effect of thermal shear on longitudinal spin polarization in a thermal model

By including the recently introduced thermal shear term that contributes to the spin polarization vector at local equilibrium, we determine longitudinal polarization of $Λ$ hyperons emitted from a hot and rotating hadronic medium using the thermal model with single freeze-out. In our analysis, we consider the RHIC top energies and use the model parameters which were determined in the earlier analyses of particle spectra and elliptic flow. We confirm that, unlike the previous calculations done by using only the thermal vorticity, the thermal shear term alone leads to the correct sign of the quadrupole structure of the longitudinal component of the polarization three-vector measured in experiments. However, we find almost complete cancellation between thermal shear and vorticity terms, which eventually leads to disagreement with the data. To clarify the role played by velocity and temperature gradient terms, we present a systematic analysis of different contributions to the longitudinal polarization.

Spin polarization dynamics in the Bjorken-expanding resistive MHD background

Evolution of spin polarization in the presence of external electric field is studied for collision energies $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=27\,{\rm GeV}$ and $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=200\,{\rm GeV}$. The numerical analysis is done in the perfect-fluid Bjorken-expanding resistive magnetohydrodynamic background and novel results are reported. In particular, we show that the electric field plays a significant role in the competition between expansion and dissipation.

Evolution of spin polarization in the Gubser-expanding conformal perfect-fluid hydrodynamic background is studied. The analysis of the conformal transformation properties of the conservation laws is extended to the case of the angular momentum conservation. Pseudo-gauge dependence of quantum fluctuations of energy in a hot relativistic gas of fermions

Explicit expressions for quantum fluctuations of energy in subsystems of a hot relativistic gas of spin-$1/2$ particles are derived. The results depend on the form of the energy-momentum tensor used in the calculations, which is a feature described as pseudo-gauge dependence. However, for sufficiently large subsystems the results obtained in different pseudo-gauges converge and agree with the canonical-ensemble formula known from statistical physics. As different forms of the energy-momentum tensor of a gas are a priori equivalent, our finding suggests that the concept of quantum fluctuations of energy in very small thermodynamic systems is pseudo-gauge dependent. On the practical side, the results of our calculations determine a scale of coarse graining for which the choice of the pseudo-gauge becomes irrelevant.

Dissipative Spin Dynamics in Relativistic Matter

Using classical description of spin degrees of freedom, we extend recent formulation of the perfect-fluid hydrodynamics for spin-polarized fluids to the case including dissipation. Our work is based on the analysis of classical kinetic equations for massive particles with spin-1/2, with the collision terms treated in the relaxation time approximation. The kinetic-theory framework determines the structure of viscous and diffusive terms and allows to explicitly calculate a complete set of new kinetic coefficients that characterize dissipative spin dynamics.

Relativistic dissipative spin dynamics in the relaxation time approximation

The concept of the Wigner function is used to construct a semi-classical kinetic theory describing the evolution of the axial-current phase-space density of spin-1/2 particles in the relaxation time approximation. The resulting approach can be used to study spin-polarization effects in relativistic matter, in particular, in heavy-ion collisions. An expression for the axial current based on the classical treatment of spin is also introduced and we show that it is consistent with earlier calculations using Wigner functions. Finally, we derive non-equilibrium corrections to the spin tensor, which are used to define, for the first time, the structure of spin transport coefficients in relativistic matter.
