A double smoothing technique for solving unconstrained nondifferentiable convex optimization problems

The aim of this paper is to develop an efficient algorithm for solving a class of unconstrained nondifferentiable convex optimization problems in finite dimensional spaces. To this end we formulate first its Fenchel dual problem and regularize it in two steps into a differentiable strongly convex one with Lipschitz continuous gradient. The doubly regularized dual problem is then solved via a fast gradient method with the aim of accelerating the resulting convergence scheme. The theoretical results are finally applied to an l1 regularization problem arising in image processing.

On the generalized parallel sum of two maximal monotone operators of Gossez type (D)

The generalized parallel sum of two monotone operators via a linear continuous mapping is defined as the inverse of the sum of the inverse of one of the operators and with inverse of the composition of the second one with the linear continuous mapping. In this article, by assuming that the operators are maximal monotone of Gossez type (D), we provide sufficient conditions of both interiority- and closedness-type for guaranteeing that their generalized sum via a linear continuous mapping is maximal monotone of Gossez type (D), too. This result will follow as a particular instance of a more general one concerning the maximal monotonicity of Gossez type (D) of an extended parallel sum defined for the maximal monotone extensions of the two operators to the corresponding biduals.

Approaching the maximal monotonicity of bifunctions via representative functions

We provide an approach to maximal monotone bifunctions based on the theory of representative functions. Thus we extend to nonreflexive Banach spaces recent results due to A.N. Iusem and, respectively, N. Hadjisavvas and H. Khatibzadeh, where sufficient conditions guaranteeing the maximal monotonicity of bifunctions were introduced. New results involving the sum of two monotone bifunctions are also presented.

Closedness type regularity conditions for surjectivity results involving the sum of two maximal monotone operators

In this note we provide regularity conditions of closedness type which guarantee some surjectivity results concerning the sum of two maximal monotone operators by using representative functions. The first regularity condition we give guarantees the surjectivity of the monotone operator $S(\cdot + p)+T(\cdot)$, where $p\in X$ and $S$ and $T$ are maximal monotone operators on the reflexive Banach space $X$. Then, this is used to obtain sufficient conditions for the surjectivity of $S+T$ and for the situation when $0$ belongs to the range of $S+T$. Several special cases are discussed, some of them delivering interesting byproducts.

Error bound results for convex inequality systems via conjugate duality

The aim of this paper is to implement some new techniques, based on conjugate duality in convex optimization, for proving the existence of global error bounds for convex inequality systems. We deal first of all with systems described via one convex inequality and extend the achieved results, by making use of a celebrated scalarization function, to convex inequality systems expressed by means of a general vector function. We also propose a second approach for guaranteeing the existence of global error bounds of the latter, which meanwhile sharpens the classical result of Robinson.

Looking for appropriate qualification conditions for subdifferential formulae and dual representations for convex risk measures

A fruitful idea, when providing subdifferential formulae and dual representations for convex risk measures, is to make use of the conjugate duality theory in convex optimization. In this paper we underline the outstanding role played by the qualification conditions in the context of different problem formulations in this area. We show that not only the meanwhile classical generalized interiority point ones come here to bear, but also a recently introduced one formulated by means of the quasi-relative interior.

Classical linear vector optimization duality revisited

With this note we bring again into attention a vector dual problem neglected by the contributions who have recently announced the successful healing of the trouble encountered by the classical duals to the classical linear vector optimization problem. This vector dual problem has, different to the mentioned works which are of set-valued nature, a vector objective function. Weak, strong and converse duality for this "new-old" vector dual problem are proven and we also investigate its connections to other vector duals considered in the same framework in the literature. We also show that the efficient solutions of the classical linear vector optimization problem coincide with its properly efficient solutions (in any sense) when the image space is partially ordered by a nontrivial pointed closed convex cone, too.

On the Dini-Hadamard subdifferential of the difference of two functions

In this paper we first provide a general formula of inclusion for the Dini-Hadamard epsilon-subdifferential of the difference of two functions and show that it becomes equality in case the functions are directionally approximately starshaped at a given point and a weak topological assumption is fulfilled. To this end we give a useful characterization of the Dini-Hadamard epsilon-subdifferential by means of sponges. The achieved results are employed in the formulation of optimality conditions via the Dini-Hadamard subdifferential for cone-constrained optimization problems having the difference of two functions as objective.

An extension of the variational inequality approach for nonlinear ill-posed problems

Convergence rates results for Tikhonov regularization of nonlinear ill-posed operator equations in abstract function spaces require the handling of both smoothness conditions imposed on the solution and structural conditions expressing the character of nonlinearity. Recently, the distinguished role of variational inequalities holding on some level sets was outlined for obtaining convergence rates results. When lower rates are expected such inequalities combine the smoothness properties of solution and forward operator in a sophisticated manner. In this paper, using a Banach space setting we are going to extend the variational inequality approach from Hölder rates to more general rates including the case of logarithmic convergence rates.

Regularity conditions via generalized interiority notions in convex optimization: new achievements and their relation to some classical statements

For the existence of strong duality in convex optimization regularity conditions play an indisputable role. We mainly deal in this paper with regularity conditions formulated by means of different generalizations of the notion of interior of a set. The primal-dual pair we investigate is a general one expressed in the language of a perturbation function and by employing its Fenchel-Moreau conjugate. After providing an overview on the generalized interior-point conditions that exist in the literature we introduce several new ones formulated by means of the quasi interior and quasi-relative interior. We underline the advantages of the new conditions vis-á-vis the classical ones and illustrate our investigations by numerous examples. We close the paper by particularizing the general approach to the classical Fenchel and Lagrange duality concepts.

Enlargements of positive sets

In this paper we introduce the notion of enlargement of a positive set in SSD spaces. To a maximally positive set $A$ we associate a family of enlargements $\E(A)$ and characterize the smallest and biggest element in this family with respect to the inclusion relation. We also emphasize the existence of a bijection between the subfamily of closed enlargements of $\E(A)$ and the family of so-called representative functions of $A$. We show that the extremal elements of the latter family are two functions recently introduced and studied by Stephen Simons. In this way we extend to SSD spaces some former results given for monotone and maximally monotone sets in Banach spaces.
