Vanishing evaluations of simple functors

The classification of simple biset functors is known, but the evaluation of a simple biset functor at a finite group G may be zero. We investigate various situations where this happens, as well as cases where this does not occur. We also prove a closed formula for such an evaluation under some restrictive conditions on G.

Fusion Systems for Profinite Groups

We introduce the notion of a pro-fusion system on a pro-p group, which generalizes the notion of a fusion system on a finite p-group. We also prove a version of Alperin's Fusion Theorem for pro-fusion systems.

Simple biset functors and double Burnside rings

Let G be a finite group and let k be a field. Our purpose is to investigate the simple modules for the double Burnside ring kB(G,G). It turns out that they are evaluations at G of simple biset functors. For a fixed finite group H, we introduce a suitable bilinear form on kB(G,H) and we prove that the quotient of kB(-,H) by the radical of the bilinear form is a semi-simple functor. This allows for a description of the evaluation of simple functors, hence of simple modules for the double Burnside ring.

On the composition product of saturated fusion systems

We say that a fusion system is the composition product of two subsystems if every morphism can be factored as a morphism in one fusion system followed by a morphism in the other. We establish a relationship between the characteristic idempotent of a saturated fusion system that is the composition product of saturated subsystems and the characteristic idempotents of the component systems. Consequently we obtain a compatibility result for transfer through the composition product and transfer through the component systems.

Saturated fusion systems as idempotents in the double Burnside ring

We give a new, unexpected characterization of saturated fusion systems on a p-group S in terms of idempotents in the p-local double Burnside ring of S that satisfy a Frobenius reciprocity relation, and reformulate fusion-theoretic phenomena in the language of idempotents. Interpreting our results in stable homotopy, we answer a long-standing question on stable splittings of classifying spaces of finite groups, and generalize the Adams--Wilkerson criterion for recognizing rings of invariants in the cohomology of an elementary abelian p-group. This work is partly motivated by a conjecture of Haynes Miller which proposes retractive transfer triples as a purely homotopy-theoretic model for p-local finite groups. We take an important step toward proving this conjecture by showing that a retractive transfer triple gives rise to a p-local finite group when two technical assumptions are made, thus reducing the conjecture to proving those two assumptions.

The extension algebra of some cohomological Mackey functors

Let $k$ be a field of characteristic $p$. We construct a new inflation functor for cohomological Mackey functors for finite groups over $k$. Using this inflation functor, we give an explicit presentation of the graded algebra of self extensions of the simple functor $S_\un^G$, when $p$ is odd and $G$ is an elementary abelian $p$-group.

On the graded center of the stable category of a finite $p$-group

We show that for any finite $p$-group $P$ of rank at least 2 and any algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p$ the graded center $Z^*(\modbar(kP))$ of the stable module category of finite-dimensional $kP$-modules has infinite dimension in each odd degree, and if $p=2$ also in each even degree. In particular, this provides examples of symmetric algebras $A$ for which $Z^0(\modbar(A))$ is not finite-dimensional, answering a question raised in [10]

A characteristic subgroup for fusion systems

As a counterpart for the prime 2 to Glauberman's $ZJ$-theorem, Stellmacher proves that any nontrivial 2-group $S$ has a nontrivial characteristic subgroup $W(S)$ with the following property. For any finite $Σ_4$-free group $G$, with $S$ a Sylow 2-subgroup of $G$ and with $O_2(G)$ self-centralizing, the subgroup $W(S)$ is normal in $G$. We generalize Stellmacher's result to fusion systems. A similar construction of $W(S)$ can be done for odd primes and gives rise to a Glauberman functor.

Realising fusion systems

We show that every fusion system on a p-group S is equal to the fusion system associated to a discrete group G with the property that every p-subgroup of G is conjugate to a subgroup of S.
