A number theoretic characterization of $E$-smooth and (FRS) morphisms: estimates on the number of $\mathbb{Z}/p^{k}\mathbb{Z}$-points

We provide uniform estimates on the number of $\mathbb{Z}/p^{k}\mathbb{Z}$-points lying on fibers of flat morphisms between smooth varieties whose fibers have rational singularities, termed (FRS) morphisms. For each individual fiber, the estimates were known by work of Avni and Aizenbud, but we render them uniform over all fibers. The proof technique for individual fibers is based on Hironaka's resolution of singularities and Denef's formula, but breaks down in the uniform case. Instead, we use recent results from the theory of motivic integration. Our estimates are moreover equivalent to the (FRS) property, just like in the absolute case by Avni and Aizenbud. In addition, we define new classes of morphisms, called $E$-smooth morphisms ($E\in\mathbb{N}$), which refine the (FRS) property, and use the methods we developed to provide uniform number-theoretic estimates as above for their fibers. Similar estimates are given for fibers of $\varepsilon$-jet flat morphisms, improving previous results by the last two authors.

A $p$-adic variant of Kontsevich-Zagier integral operation rules and of Hrushovski-Kazhdan style motivic integration

We prove that if two semi-algebraic subsets of $\mathbb{Q}_p^n$ have the same $p$-adic measure, then this equality can already be deduced using only some basic integral transformation rules. On the one hand, this can be considered as a positive answer to a $p$-adic analogue of a question asked by Kontsevich-Zagier in the reals (though the question in the reals is much harder). On the other hand, our result can also be considered as stating that over $\mathbb{Q}_p$, universal motivic integration (in the sense of Hrushovski-Kazhdan) is just $p$-adic integration.

WF-holonomicity of C-exp-class distributions on non-archimedean local fields

In the context of geometry and analysis on non-archimedean local fields, we study two recent notions, $C^{\mathrm exp}$-class distributions from [11] and WF-holonomicity from [1], and we show that any distribution of $C^{\mathrm exp}$-class is WF-holonomic. Thus we answer a question from [1] by providing a framework of WF-holonomic distributions for non-archimedean local fields which is stable under taking Fourier transforms and which contains many natural distributions, in particular, the distributions studied in [1]. We further show that one can regularize distributions without leaving the $C^{\mathrm exp}$-class. Finally, we show a close link between zero loci and smooth loci for functions and distributions of $C^{\mathrm exp}$-class, by proving a converse to a result of [11]. A key ingredient is a new resolution result for subanalytic functions (by alterations), based on embedded resolution for analytic functions and model theory.

The dimension growth conjecture, polynomial in the degree and without logarithmic factors

We address Heath-Brown's and Serre's dimension growth conjecture (proved by Salberger), when the degree $d$ grows. Recall that Salberger's dimension growth results give bounds of the form $O_{X, \varepsilon} (B^{\dim X+\varepsilon})$ for the number of rational points of height at most $B$ on any integral subvariety $X$ of ${\mathbb P}^n_{\mathbb Q}$ of degree $d\geq 2$, where one can write $O_{d,n, \varepsilon}$ instead of $O_{X, \varepsilon}$ as soon as $d\geq 4$. Our main contribution is to remove the factor $B^\varepsilon$ as soon as $d \geq 5$, without introducing a factor $\log B$, while moreover obtaining polynomial dependence on $d$ of the implied constant. Working polynomially in $d$ allows us to give a self-contained and slightly simplified treatment of dimension growth for degree $d \geq 16$, while in the range $5 \leq d \leq 15$ we invoke results by Browning, Heath-Brown and Salberger. Along the way we improve the well-known bounds due to Bombieri and Pila on the number of integral points of bounded height on affine curves and those by Walsh on the number of rational points of bounded height on projective curves. The former improvement leads to a slight sharpening of a recent estimate due to Bhargava, Shankar, Taniguchi, Thorne, Tsimerman and Zhao on the size of the $2$-torsion subgroup of the class group of a degree $d$ number field. Our treatment builds on recent work by Salberger which brings in many primes in Heath-Brown's variant of the determinant method, and on recent work by Walsh and Ellenberg--Venkatesh, who bring in the size of the defining polynomial. We also obtain lower bounds showing that one cannot do better than polynomial dependence on $d$.

Igusa's conjecture for exponential sums: optimal estimates for non-rational singularities

We prove an upper bound on the log canonical threshold of a hypersurface that satisfies a certain power condition and use it to prove several generalizations of Igusa's conjecture on exponential sums, with the log-canonical threshold in the exponent of the estimates. We show that this covers optimally all situations of the conjectures for non-rational singularities, by comparing the log canonical threshold with a local notion of the motivic oscillation index.

Doubling coverings via resolution of singularities and preparation

In this paper we provide asymptotic upper bounds on the complexity in two (closely related) situations. We confirm for the total doubling coverings and not only for the chains the expected bounds of the form $$ κ({\mathcal U}) \le K_1(\log ({1}/δ))^{K_2} . $$ This is done in a rather general setting, i.e. for the $δ$-complement of a polynomial zero-level hypersurface $Y_0$ and for the regular level hypersurfaces $Y_c$ themselves with no assumptions on the singularities of $P$. The coefficient $K_2$ is the ambient dimension $n$ in the first case and $n-1$ in the second case. However, the question of a uniform behavior of the coefficient $K_1$ remains open. As a second theme, we confirm in arbitrary dimension the upper bound for the number of a-charts covering a real semi-algebraic set $X$ of dimension $m$ away from the $δ$-neighborhood of a lower dimensional set $S$, with bound of the form $$ κ(δ) \le C (\log ({1}/δ))^{m} $$ holding uniformly in the complexity of $X$. We also show an analogue for level sets with parameter away from the $δ$-neighborhood of a low dimensional set. More generally, the bounds are obtained also for real subanalytic and real power-subanalytic sets.

Uniform Yomdin-Gromov parametrizations and points of bounded height in valued fields

We prove a uniform version of non-Archimedean Yomdin-Gromov parametrizations in a definable context with algebraic Skolem functions in the residue field. The parametrization result allows us to bound the number of F_q[t]-points of bounded degrees of algebraic varieties, uniformly in the cardinality q of the finite field F_q and the degree, generalizing work by Sedunova for fixed q. We also deduce a uniform non-Archimedean Pila-Wilkie theorem, generalizing work by Cluckers-Comte-Loeser.

An invariant detecting rational singularities via the log canonical threshold

We show that if f is a nonzero, noninvertible function on a smooth complex variety X and J_f is the Jacobian ideal of f, then lct(f, J_f^2)>1 if and only if the hypersurface defined by f has rational singularities. Moreover, if this is not the case, then lct(f, J_f^2)=lct(f). We give two proofs, one relying on arc spaces and one that shows that the minimal exponent of f is at least as large as lct(f, J_f^2). In the case of a polynomial over the algebraic closure of Q, we also prove an analogue of this latter inequality, with the minimal exponent replaced by the motivic oscillation index moi(f).

Uniform parameterization of subanalytic sets and diophantine applications

We prove new parameterization theorems for sets definable in the structure $\mathbb{R}_{an}$ (i.e. for globally subanalytic sets) which are uniform for definable families of such sets. We treat both $C^r$-parameterization and (mild) analytic parameterization. In the former case we establish a polynomial (in $r$) bound (depending only on the given family) for the number of parameterizing functions. However, since uniformity is impossible in the latter case (as was shown by Yomdin via a very simple family of algebraic sets), we introduce a new notion, analytic quasi-parameterization (where many-valued complex analytic functions are used), which allows us to recover a uniform result. We then give some diophantine applications motivated by the question as to whether the $H^{o(1)}$ bound in the Pila-Wilkie counting theorem can be improved, at least for certain reducts of $\mathbb{R}_{an}$. Both parameterization results are shown to give uniform $(\log H)^{O(1)}$ bounds for the number of rational points of height at most $H$ on $\mathbb{R}_{an}$-definable Pfaffian surfaces. The quasi-parameterization technique produces the sharper result, but the uniform $C^r$-parametrization theorem has the advantage of also applying to $\mathbb{R}_{an}^{pow}$-definable families.

Uniform analysis on local fields and applications to orbital integrals

We study upper bounds, approximations, and limits for functions of motivic exponential class, uniformly in non-Archimedean local fields whose characteristic is $0$ or sufficiently large. Our results together form a flexible framework for doing analysis over local fields in a field-independent way. As corollaries, we obtain many new transfer principles, for example, for local constancy, continuity, and existence of various kinds of limits. Moreover, we show that the Fourier transform of an $L^2$-function of motivic exponential class is again of motivic exponential class. As an application in the realm of representation theory, we prove uniform bounds for the normalized by the discriminant Fourier transforms of orbital integrals on connected reductive $p$-adic groups.

Distributions and wave front sets in the uniform non-archimedean setting

We study some constructions on distributions in a uniform $p$-adic context, and also in large positive characteristic, using model theoretic methods. We introduce a class of distributions which we call distributions of ${\mathscr C}^{\mathrm{exp}}$-class and which is based on the notion of ${\mathscr C}^{\mathrm{exp}}$-class functions from [6]. This class of distributions is stable under Fourier transformation and has various forms of uniform behavior across non-archimedean local fields. We study wave front sets, pull-backs and push-forwards of distributions of this class. In particular we show that the wave front set is always equal to the complement of the zero locus of a ${\mathscr C}^{\mathrm{exp}}$-class function. We first revise and generalize some of the results of Heifetz that he developed in the $p$-adic context by analogy to results about real wave front sets by Hörmander. In the final section, we study sizes of neighborhoods of local constancy of Schwartz-Bruhat functions and their push forwards in relation to discriminants.

Definable equivalence relations and zeta functions of groups

We prove that the theory of the $p$-adics ${\mathbb Q}_p$ admits elimination of imaginaries provided we add a sort for ${\rm GL}_n({\mathbb Q}_p)/{\rm GL}_n({\mathbb Z}_p)$ for each $n$. We also prove that the elimination of imaginaries is uniform in $p$. Using $p$-adic and motivic integration, we deduce the uniform rationality of certain formal zeta functions arising from definable equivalence relations. This also yields analogous results for definable equivalence relations over local fields of positive characteristic. The appendix contains an alternative proof, using cell decomposition, of the rationality (for fixed $p$) of these formal zeta functions that extends to the subanalytic context. As an application, we prove rationality and uniformity results for zeta functions obtained by counting twist isomorphism classes of irreducible representations of finitely generated nilpotent groups; these are analogous to similar results of Grunewald, Segal and Smith and of du Sautoy and Grunewald for subgroup zeta functions of finitely generated nilpotent groups.

Integration of Oscillatory and Subanalytic Functions

We prove the stability under integration and under Fourier transform of a concrete class of functions containing all globally subanalytic functions and their complex exponentials. This paper extends the investigation started in [J.-M. Lion, J.-P. Rolin: "Volumes, feuilles de Rolle de feuilletages analytiques et théorème de Wilkie" Ann. Fac. Sci. Toulouse Math. (6) 7 (1998), no. 1, 93-112] and [R. Cluckers, D. J. Miller: "Stability under integration of sums of products of real globally subanalytic functions and their logarithms" Duke Math. J. 156 (2011), no. 2, 311-348] to an enriched framework including oscillatory functions. It provides a new example of fruitful interaction between analysis and singularity theory.

Definable sets up to definable bijections in Presburger groups

We entirely classify definable sets up to definable bijections in $\mathbb{Z}$-groups, where the language is the one of ordered abelian groups. From this, we deduce, among others, a classification of definable families of bounded definable sets.

Integration of functions of motivic exponential class, uniform in all non-archimedean local fields of characteristic zero

Through a cascade of generalizations, we develop a theory of motivic integration which works uniformly in all non-archimedean local fields of characteristic zero, overcoming some of the difficulties related to ramification and small residue field characteristics. We define a class of functions, called functions of motivic exponential class, which we show to be stable under integration and under Fourier transformation, extending results and definitions from previous papers. We prove uniform results related to rationality and to various kinds of loci. A key ingredient is a refined form of Denef-Pas quantifier elimination which allows us to understand definable sets in the value group and in the valued field.

A definable, p-adic analogue of Kirszbraun's Theorem on extensions of Lipschitz maps

A direct application of Zorn's Lemma gives that every Lipschitz map $f:X\subset \mathbb{Q}_p^n\to \mathbb{Q}_p^\ell$ has an extension to a Lipschitz map $\widetilde f: \mathbb{Q}_p^n\to \mathbb{Q}_p^\ell$. This is analogous, but more easy, to Kirszbraun's Theorem about the existence of Lipschitz extensions of Lipschitz maps $S\subset \mathbb{R}^n\to \mathbb{R}^\ell$. Recently, Fischer and Aschenbrenner obtained a definable version of Kirszbraun's Theorem. In the present paper, we prove in the $p$-adic context that $\widetilde f$ can be taken definable when $f$ is definable, where definable means semi-algebraic or subanalytic (or, some intermediary notion). We proceed by proving the existence of definable, Lipschitz retractions of $\mathbb{Q}_p^n$ to the topological closure of $X$ when $X$ is definable.

Transfer principles for Bounds of motivic exponential functions

We study transfer principles for upper bounds of motivic exponential functions and for linear combinations of such functions, directly generalizing the transfer principles from [7] by Cluckers-Loeser and [13, Appendix B] by Shin-Templier (appendix B by Cluckers-Gordon-Halupczok). These functions come from rather general oscillatory integrals on local fields, and can be used to describe e.g. Fourier transforms of orbital integrals. One of our techniques consists in reducing to simpler functions where the oscillation only comes from the residue field.

Bounds for p-adic exponential sums and log-canonical thresholds

We propose a conjecture for exponential sums which generalizes both a conjecture by Igusa and a local variant by Denef and Sperber, in particular, it is without the homogeneity condition on the polynomial in the phase, and with new predicted uniform behavior. The exponential sums have summation sets consisting of integers modulo $p^m$ lying $p$-adically close to $y$, and the proposed bounds are uniform in $p$, $y$, and $m$. We give evidence for the conjecture, by showing uniform bounds in $p$, $y$, and in some values for $m$. On the way, we prove new bounds for log-canonical thresholds which are closely related to the bounds predicted by the conjecture.
