On the Generalisation of the Hahn-Jordan Decomposition for Real Càdlàg Functions

For a real càdlàg function f and a positive constant c we find another càdlàg function, which has the smallest total variation pos- sible among all functions uniformly approximating f with accuracy c/2. The solution is expressed with the truncated variation, upward truncated variation and downward truncated variation introduced in [L1] and [L2]. They are always finite even if the total variation of f is infinite, and they may be viewed as the generalisation of the Hahn-Jordan decomposition for real càdlàg functions. We also present partial results for more general functions.

Pathwise stochastic integration with finite variation processes uniformly approximating càdlàg processes

For any real-valued stochastic process $X$ with cŕdlŕg paths we define non-empty family of processes which have locally finite total variation, have jumps of the same order as the process $X$ and uniformly approximate its paths on compacts. The application of the defined class is the definition of stochastic integral with semimartingale integrand and integrator as a limit of pathwise Lebesgue-Stieltjes integrals. This construction leads to the stochastic integral with some correction term (different from the Stratonovich integral). We compare the obtained result with classical results of Wong-Zakai and Bichteler on pathwise stochastic integration. As a "byproduct" we obtain an example of a series of double Skorohod maps of a standard Brownian motion, which is not a semimartingale.

On limit distributions of normalized truncated variation, upward truncated variation and downward truncated variation processes

In the paper we introduce the truncated variation, upward truncated variation and downward truncated variation. These are closely related to the total variation but are well-defined even if the latter is infinite. Our aim is to explore their feasibility to studies of stochastic processes. We concentrate on a Brownian motion with drift for which we prove the convergence of the above- mentioned quantities. For example, we study the truncated variation when the truncation parameter c tends to 0. We prove in this case that for "small" c's it is well-approximated by a deterministic process. Moreover we prove that error in this approximation converges weakly (in functional sense) to a Brownian motion. We prove also similar result for truncated variation processes when time parameter is rescaled to infinity. We stress that our methodology is robust. A key to the proofs was a decomposition of the truncated variation (see Lemmas 11 and 12). It can be used for studies of any continuous processes. Some additional results like an analog of the Anscombe-Donsker theorem and the Laplace transform of time to given drawdown by c (and analogously drawup till time) are presented.

On pathwise uniform approximation of processes with càdlàg trajectories by processes with finite total variation

For any real-valued stochastic process X with càdlàg paths we define non-empty family of processes, which have finite total variation, have jumps of the same order as the process X and uniformly approximate its paths: This allows to decompose any real-valued stochastic process with càdlàg paths and infinite total variation into a sum of uniformly close, finite variation process and an adapted process, with arbitrary small amplitude but infinite total variation. Another application of the defined class is the definition of the stochastic integral with respect to the process X as a limit of pathwise Lebesgue-Stieltjes integrals. This construction leads to the stochastic integral with some correction term.

On truncated variation, upward truncated variation and downward truncated variation for diffusions

The truncated variation, $TV^c$, is a fairly new concept introduced in [5]. Roughly speaking, given a càdlàg function $f$, its truncated variation is "the total variation which does not pay attention to small changes of $f$, below some threshold $c>0$". The very basic consequence of such approach is that contrary to the total variation, $TV^c$ is always finite. This is appealing to the stochastic analysis where so-far large classes of processes, like semimartingales or diffusions, could not be studied with the total variation. Recently in [6], another characterization of $TV^c$ was found. Namely $TV^c$ is the smallest total variation of a function which approximates $f$ uniformly with accuracy $c/2$. Due to these properties we envisage that $TV^c$ might be a useful concept to the theory of processes. For this reason we determine some properties of $TV^c$ for some well-known processes. In course of our research we discover intimate connections with already known concepts of the stochastic processes theory. Firstly, for semimartingales we proved that $TV^c$ is of order $c^{-1}$ and the normalized truncated variation converges almost surely to the quadratic variation of the semimartingale as $c\searrow0$. Secondly, we studied the rate of this convergence. As this task was much more demanding we narrowed to the class of diffusions (with some mild additional assumptions). We obtained the weak convergence to a so-called Ocone martingale. These results can be viewed as some kind of large numbers theorem and the corresponding central limit theorem. All the results above were obtained in a functional setting, viz. we worked with processes describing the growth of the truncated variation in time. Moreover, in the same respect we also treated two closely related quantities - the so-called upward truncated variation and downward truncated variation.

On Pathwise Uniform Approximation of Processes with Càdlàg Trajectories by Processes with Minimal Total Variation

For a real cadlag function $f$ and positive constant $c$ we find another cadlag function, which has the smallest total variation possible among the functions uniformly approximating f with accuracy c=2. The solution is expressed with the truncated variation, upward truncated variation and downward truncated variation introduced in the papers R. Łochowski, Truncated variation of Brownian motion with drift, Bull. Pol. Acad. Sci. Math. Vol. 56 (2008) and R. Łochowski, Truncated variation, upward truncated variation and downward truncated variation of Brownian motion with drift - their characteristics and applications Stochastic Processes and their Applications 121 (2011). They are analogs of Hahn-Jordan decomposition of a cadlag function with finite total variation but are always finite even if the total variation is infinite. We apply obtained results to general stochastic processes with c?adl?ag trajectories and in the special case of Brownian motion with drift we apply them to obtain full characterisation of its truncated variation by calculating its Laplace transform. We also calculate covariance of upward and downward truncated variations of Brownian motion with drift.
