Gaugings of Groupoids, Strings in Shadows, and Emergent Poisson $σ$-Models

The gauge principle is proposed for rigid Lie-groupoidal symmetries $G=>M$ of the Polyakov-Alvarez-Gawędzki 2$d$ non-linear $σ$-model with metric target $(M,g_M)$ and the WZ term given by a CS differential character coming from an abelian gerbe $\mathcal{G}$. The principle bases on the notion of principaloid bundle with connection $(P,Θ)$, introduced by Strobl and the Author. The descent of the model to the shadow of $P$ is demonstrated to require a twisted $G$-equivariant structure on $\mathcal{G}$, prequantising a multiplicative extension $(H_M,ρ,0)$ of the gerbe's curvature $H_M$ to a 3-cocycle in the BSS cohomology of the groupoid's nerve. The descent is accompanied by a combined $g_M$-isometric/$ρ$-holonomic reduction of the structure group of $P$, and uses an augmentation of the original gerbe by a trivial one depending quadratically on $Θ$. The latter couples to the field of the $σ$-model -- in an extension of the scheme worked out for the action groupoid by Gawędzki, Waldorf and the Author -- through the comomentum component of the Spencer pair of $ρ$, as described by Crainic et al. A fully fledged cohomological analysis of the relevant gauge anomaly and of inequivalent gaugings is presented. In the symplectic setting, the augmentation procedure is shown to lead to the emergence of the standard Poisson $σ$-model. Conversely, a coaugmentation of a (local) Poisson $σ$-model by a flat equivariant gerbe yields a novel field theory with the shadow of the underlying symplectic principaloid bundle as the configuration bundle, and with manifest lagrangean gauge symmetry. A simple Cartan-type associating mechanism is proposed to account for the reduction of the structure group of the principaloid bundle. The mechanism allows for the coupling of an arbitrary number of distinct charged matter-field species to a given gauge field.

Principaloid bundles

We present a novel generalisation of principal bundles -- principaloid bundles: These are fibre bundles $π:P\to B$ where the typical fibre is the arrow manifold $G$ of a Lie groupoid $G\rightrightarrows M$ and the structure group is reduced to the latter's group of bisections. Each such bundle canonically comes with a bundle map $D:P\to F$ to another fibre bundle $F$ over the base $B$, with typical fibre $M$. Examples of principaloid bundles include ordinary principal $\underline G$-bundles, obtained for $G:=\underline G\rightrightarrows\bullet$, bundles associated to them, obtained for action groupoids $G:=\underline G\ltimes M$, and general fibre bundles if $G$ is a pair groupoid. While $π$ is far from being a principal $G$-bundle, we prove that $D$ is one. Connections on the principaloid bundle $π$ are thus required to be $G$-invariant Ehresmann connections. In the three examples mentioned above, this reproduces the usual types of connection for each of them. In a local description over a trivialising cover $\{O_i\}$ of $B$, the connection gives rise to Lie algebroid-valued objects living over bundle trivialisations $\{O_i\times M\}$ of $F$. Their behaviour under bundle automorphisms, including gauge transformations, is studied in detail. Finally, we construct the Atiyah-Ehresmann groupoid ${\rm At}(P)\rightrightarrows F$ which governs symmetries of $P$, this time mapping distinct $D$-fibres to one another in general. It is a fibre-bundle object in the category of Lie groupoids, with typical fibre $G\rightrightarrows M$ and base $B\times B\rightrightarrows B$. We show that those of its bisections which project to bisections of its base are in a one-to-one correspondence with automorphisms of $π$.

Towards higher super-$σ$-model categories

A simplicial framework for the gerbe-theoretic modelling of supercharged-loop dynamics in the presence of worldsheet defects is discussed whose equivariantisation with respect to global supersymmetries of the bulk theory and subsequent orbit decomposition lead to a natural stratification of and cohomological superselection rules for target-space supergeometry, expected to encode essential information on the quantised 2$d$ field theory. A physically relevant example is analysed in considerable detail.

A Cartan tale of the orbifold superstring

A geometrisation scheme internal to the category of Lie supergroups is discussed for the supersymmetric de Rham cocycles on the super-Minkowski group $\,\mathbb{T}\,$ which determine the standard super-$p$-brane dynamics with that target, and interpreted within Cartan's approach to the modelling of orbispaces of group actions by homotopy quotients. The ensuing higher geometric objects are shown to carry a canonical equivariant structure for the action of a discrete subgroup of $\,\mathbb{T}$, which results in their descent to the corresponding orbifolds of $\,\mathbb{T}\,$ and in the emergence of a novel class of superfield theories with defects.

Equivariant Cartan-Eilenberg supergerbes, the Kostelecký-Rabin defect and descent to the Rabin-Crane superorbifold

A concrete geometrisation scheme is proposed for the Green-Schwarz cocycles in the supersymmetric de Rham cohomology of the super-minkowskian spacetime, which determine standard super-$σ$-model dynamics of super-p-branes. The scheme yields higher-supergeometric structures with supersymmetry akin to those known from the un-graded setting - distinguished (Murray-type) p-gerbe objects in the category of Lie supergroups. These are shown to carry a canonical equivariant structure for the action of the discrete Kostelecký-Rabin subgroup of the target supersymmetry group on the target, and thus to resolve the `topology' of the corresponding Rabin-Crane soul superorbifold of the super-minkowskian spacetime. The equivariant structure is seen to effectively define a novel $σ$-model of super-p-brane dynamics in the super-orbifold through the construction of the corresponding (gauge-)symmetry defect.

On symmetric simplicial (super)string backgrounds, (super-)WZW defect fusion and the Chern-Simons theory

The super-$σ$-model of dynamics of the super-charged loop in an ambient supermanifold in the presence of worldsheet defects of arbitrary topology is formalised within Gawȩdzki's higher-cohomological approach, drawing inspiration from the precursor arXiv:0808.1419 [hep-th]. A distinguished class of the corresponding backgrounds (supertargets with additional bicategorial supergeometric data), organised into simplicial hierarchies, is considered. To these, configurational (super)symmetry of the bulk field theory is lifted coherently, whereby the notion of a maximally (super)symmetric background, and in particular that of a simplicial Lie background, arises as the target structure requisite for the definition of the super-$σ$-model with defects fully transmissive to the currents of the bulk (super)symmetry. The formal concepts are illustrated in two settings of physical relevance: that of the WZW $σ$-model of the bosonic string in a compact simple 1-connected Lie group and that of the GS super-$σ$-model of the superstring in the Minkowski super-space. In the former setting, the structure of the background is fixed through a combination of simplicial, symmetry(-reducibility) and cohomological arguments, and a novel link between fusion of the maximally symmetric WZW defects of Fuchs et al. and the 3$d$ CS theory with timelike Wilson lines with fixed holonomy is established. Moreover, a purely geometric interpretation of the Verlinde fusion rules is proposed. In the latter setting, a multiplicative structure compatible with supersymmetry is shown to exist on the GS super-1-gerbe of arXiv:1706.05682 [hep-th], and subsequently used in a novel construction of a class of maximally (rigidly) supersymmetric bi-branes whose elementary fusion is also studied.

The higher-algebraic skeleton of the superstring -- a case study

A novel Lie-superalgebraic description of the superstring in the super-Minkowskian background is extracted from the Cartan-Eilenberg super-1-gerbe geometrising the higher gauge field (the Green-Schwarz super-3-cocycle) that couples to the supercharge carried by the superstring. The description assumes the form of a hierarchy of Lie superalgebras integrable to a hierarchy of Lie supergroups and provides a manifestly supersymmetric model of a family of supermanifolds defining a trivialisation of the super-1-gerbe over the embedded superstring worldsheet. The trivialisation, obtained in a purely topological formulation of the superstring dynamics dual to the standard Nambu-Goto-type one, conforms with the gerbe-theoretic representation of extended sources of higher gauge fields known from previous studies of the $σ$-model of the bosonic string.

Equivariant Cartan-Eilenberg supergerbes II. Equivariance in the super-Minkowskian setting

This is a continuation of a programme, initiated in Part I [arXiv:1706.05682], of geometrisation, compatible with the SUSY present, of the Green-Schwarz $(p+2)$-cocycles coupling to the topological charges carried by $p$-branes on reductive homogeneous spaces of SUSY groups described by GS(-type) super-$σ$-models. In the present part, higher-geometric realisations of the various SUSYs - both global and local - of these field theories are studied at length in the form of - respectively - families of gerbe isomorphisms indexed by the global-SUSY group and equivariant structures with respect to SUSY actions amenable to gauging. The discussion, employing an algebroidal analysis of the small gauge anomaly, leads to a novel definition of a supersymmetric equivariant structure on the Cartan-Eilenberg super-$p$-gerbe of Part I with respect to actions of distinguished normal subgroups of the SUSY group. This is exemplified by the ${\rm Ad}_\cdot$-equivariant structure on the GS super-$p$-gerbes for $\,p\in\{0,1\}\,$ over the super-Minkowski space, whose existence conforms with the classical results for the bosonic counterparts of the corresponding super-$σ$-models. The study also explores the fundamental gauge SUSY of the GS super-$σ$-model aka $κ$-symmetry. Its geometrisation calls for a transcription of the field theory to the dual topological Hughes-Polchinski formulation. Natural conditions for the transcription are identified and illustrated on the example of the super-Minkowskian model of Part I. In the dual formulation, the notion of an extended HP $p$-gerbe unifying the metric and topological degrees of freedom of the GS super-$σ$-model is advanced. Its compatibility with $κ$-symmetry is ensured by the existence of a linearised equivariant structure. The results reported herein lend strong structural support to the geometrisation scheme postulated in Part I.

Equivariant Cartan-Eilenberg supergerbes for the Green-Schwarz superbranes I. The super-Minkowskian case

An explicit gerbe-theoretic description of the super-$σ$-models of the Green-Schwarz type is proposed and its fundamental structural properties, such as equivariance with respect to distinguished isometries of the target supermanifold and $κ$-symmetry, are studied at length for targets with the structure of a homogeneous space of a Lie supergroup. The programme of (super)geometrisation of the Cartan-Eilenberg super-$(p+2)$-cocycles that determine the topological content of the super-$p$-brane mechanics and ensure its $κ$-symmetry, motivated by the successes of and guided by the intuitions provided by its bosonic predecessor, is based on the idea of a (super)central extension of a Lie supergroup in the presence of a nontrivial super-2-cocycle in the Chevalley-Eilenberg cohomology of its Lie superalgebra, the gap between the two cohomologies being bridged by a super-variant of the classic Chevalley-Eilenberg construction. A systematic realisation of the programme is herewith begun with a detailed study of the elementary homogeneous space of the super-Poincaré group, the super-Minkowskian spacetime, whose simplicity affords straightforward identification of the supergeometric mechanisms and unobstructed development of formal tools to be employed in more complex circumstances.

The square root of the vacuum I. Equivariance for the $κ$-symmetry superdistribution

A complete and natural geometric and physical interpretation of the tangential gauge supersymmetry, also known as $κ$-symmetry, of a large class of Green-Schwarz(-type) super-$σ$-models for the super-$p$-brane in a homogeneous space of a (supersymmetry) Lie supergroup is established in the convenient setting of the topological Hughes-Polchinski formulation of the super-$σ$-model and illustrated on a number of physical examples. The supersymmetry is identified as an odd superdistribution in the tangent sheaf of the supertarget of the super-$σ$-model, generating - through its weak derived flag - the vacuum foliation of the supertarget. It is also demonstrated to canonically lift to the vacuum restriction of the extended Hughes-Polchinski $p$-gerbe associated with the superbackground of the field theory, and that in the form of a canonical linearised equivariant structure thereon, canonically compatible with the residual global supersymmetry of the vacuum.

Equivariant Cartan-Eilenberg supergerbes for the Green-Schwarz superbranes III. The wrapping anomaly and the super-${\rm AdS}_5\times\mathbb{S}^5$ background

This is a continuation of a programme, initiated in the work arXiv:1706.05682 [hep-th], of supersymmetry-equivariant geometrisation of the Green-Schwarz super-$(p+2)$-cocycles coupling to the topological charges carried by super-$p$-branes of the superstring theory on reductive homogeneous spaces of supersymmetry Lie supergroups. In the present part, the ideas and geometro-algebraic tools developed previously are substantially enhanced, adapted to and applied in the physically significant curved backround of Metsaev and Tseytlin, determining the propagation of the critical superstring in the super-${\rm AdS}_5\times\mathbb{S}^5$ geometry. The analysis brings to the fore the rôle, in the geometrisation scheme proposed, of the wrapping anomaly of the Poisson algebra of the Noether charges of the rigid symmetries of the relevant super-σ-model that lift the geometric symmetries of the supertarget. In particular, the significance of the charges quantifying the monodromy of the Grassmann-odd coordinates in the Kostelecký-Rabin-type quotient of the supertarget is emphasised. A trivial super-1-gerbe is associated with the Metsaev-Tseytlin super-3-cocycle over the super-${\rm AdS}_5\times\mathbb{S}^5$ target. The issue of compatibility of the geometrisation with the İnönü-Wigner contraction of the supersymmetry Lie superalgebra to its flat-superspace counterpart is investigated at some length, revealing the rigidity of the relevant Cartan-Eilenberg cohomology and signalling an attractive potential alternative to the non-contractible trivial super-1-gerbe constructed.

Equivariant prequantisation of the super-0-brane in ${\rm AdS}_2\times\mathbb{S}^2$ - a toy model for supergerbe theory on curved spaces

The paper is another step towards a realisation of the goal, advanced in articles 1706.05682 [hep-th] and 1808.04470 [hep-th], of a systematic supersymmetry-equivariant geometrisation of physically distinguished Green-Schwarz super-(p+2)-cocycles defining classes in the supersymmetry-invariant refinement of the de Rham cohomology of homogeneous spaces of (supersymmetry) Lie supergroups, associated with reductive decompositions of their Lie superalgebras. It deals with a correlated geometrisation of a pair of such super-(p+2)-cocycles on spaces in correspondence under a blow-up transformation dual to the İnönü-Wigner contraction that relates the respective (supersymmetry) Lie superalgebras, the latter correspondence being taken as the organising principle of the geometrisation procedure that exploits the link between the Cartan-Eilenberg cohomology of the supersymmetry group and the Chevalley-Eilenberg cohomology of its Lie superalgebra, alongside a cohomological classification of central extensions thereof. A general scheme of a correlated geometrisation compatible with the contraction is laid out and illustrated on the nontrivial example of a pair of consistent super-0-brane backgrounds: the super-Minkowski space $sMink^{3,1|8}$ with the standard N=2 Green-Schwarz super-2-cocycle on it and the super-$AdS_2 \times S^2$ space with Zhou's super-2-cocycle on it, asymptoting to the former in the limit of an infinite common radius of the $AdS_2$ and the $S^2$ in the body $AdS_2\times S^2$ of the supertarget. The geometrisation yields the respective supersymmetry-equivariant super-0-gerbes, i.e., the prequantum bundles of the associated Green-Schwarz super-$σ$-models in the Nambu-Goto formulation. Upon passing to the equivalent Hughes-Polchinski formulation of the models, the relevant extended super-0-gerbes are verified to possess a weak $κ$-equivariant structure.

Defects, dualities and the geometry of strings via gerbes II. Generalised geometries with a twist, the gauge anomaly and the gauge-symmetry defect

This is the second in a series of papers discussing in the framework of gerbe theory canonical and geometric aspects of the 2d nonlinear sigma model in the presence of conformal defects in the worldsheet. Employing the formal tools worked out in the first paper of the series, 1101.1126 [hep-th], a thorough analysis of rigid symmetries of the sigma model is carried out with emphasis on algebraic structures on generalised tangent bundles over the target space of the theory and over its state space that give rise to a realisation of the symmetry algebra on states. The analysis leads to a proposal for a novel differential-algebraic construct extending the original definition of the (gerbe-twisted) Courant algebroid on the generalised tangent bundles over the target space in a manner codetermined by the structure of the 2-category of abelian bundle gerbes with connection over it. The construct admits a neat interpretation in terms of a relative Cartan calculus associated with the hierarchy of manifolds that compose the target space of the multiphase sigma model. The paper also discusses at length the gauge anomaly for the rigid symmetries, derived and quantified cohomologically in a previous work of Gawȩdzki, Waldorf and the author. The ensuing reinterpretation of the small gauge anomaly in terms of the twisted rel. Courant algebroid modelling the Poisson algebra of Noether charges of the symmetries is elucidated through an equivalence between a category built from data of the gauged sigma model and that of principal bundles over the worldsheet with a structural action groupoid based on the target space. Finally, the large gauge anomaly is identified with the obstruction to the existence of topological defect networks implementing the action of the gauge group of the gauged sigma model and those giving a local trivialisation of a gauge bundle of an arbitrary topology over the worldsheet.

Defects, dualities and the geometry of strings via gerbes. I. Dualities and state fusion through defects

This is the first of a series of papers discussing canonical aspects of the two-dimensional non-linear sigma model in the presence of conformal defects on the world-sheet in the framework of gerbe theory. In the paper, the basic tools of the state-space analysis are introduced, such as the symplectic structure on the state space of the sigma model and the pre-quantum bundle over it, and a relation between the defects and dualities of the sigma model is established. Also, a state-space description of the splitting-joining interaction of the string across the defect is presented, leading to an interpretation of the geometric data associated to junctions of defect lines in terms of intertwiners between the incoming and outgoing sectors of the theory in interaction.
