On Sampling Methods for Inverse Biharmonic Scattering Problems in Supported Plates

We study the inverse problem of qualitatively recovering a supported cavity in a thin elastic plate governed by the flexural (biharmonic) wave equation, using far-field pattern measurements. We derive a reciprocity principle and a factorization of the far-field operator for the supported plate boundary conditions, and we analyze its range properties to justify both the linear sampling method (LSM) and the direct sampling method (DSM). Numerical experiments assess the performance of LSM and DSM under noise, a limited amount of data, multiple scattering, and variations in the Poisson's ratio. The results show that both methods robustly recover the obstacle's location and convex hull, with DSM offering improved stability and reduced computational cost.

Well-posedness for the biharmonic scattering problem for a penetrable obstacle

We address the direct scattering problem for a penetrable obstacle in an infinite elastic two--dimensional Kirchhoff--Love plate. Under the assumption that the plate's thickness is small relative to the wavelength of the incident wave, the propagation of perturbations on the plate is governed by the two-dimensional biharmonic wave equation, which we study in the frequency domain. With the help of an operator factorization, the scattering problem is analyzed from the perspective of a coupled boundary value problem involving the Helmholtz and modified Helmholtz equations. Well-posedness and reciprocity relations for the problem are established. Numerical examples for some special cases are provided to validate the theoretical findings.

Qualitative reconstruction methods for imaging interior Robin interfaces in EIT from Robin-to-Dirichlet data

We consider an inverse shape problem arising in electrical impedance tomography (EIT) for nondestructive testing, in which interior defects are modeled through Robin transmission conditions. Unlike classical formulations, we impose Robin boundary conditions on both the exterior measurement surface and the interior interface, and use the Robin-to-Dirichlet (RtD) map as the available data. Within this setting, we develop qualitative (non-iterative) reconstruction methods based on the Linear Sampling Method (LSM) and the Regularized Factorization Method (RFM), and derive new analytical characterizations that enable these methods to identify interior regions. We further propose a numerical implementation that incorporates regularization strategies and demonstrate, through experiments, that the methods reliably reconstruct interior regions of interest.

Factorization method for the biharmonic scattering problem for an absorbing penetrable scatterer

This work extends the factorization method to the inverse scattering problem of reconstructing the shape and location of an absorbing penetrable scatterer embedded in a thin infinite elastic (Kirchhoff--Love) plate. With the assumption that the plate thickness is small compared to the wavelength of the incident wave, the propagation of flexural perturbations is modeled by the two--dimensional biharmonic wave equation in the frequency domain. Within this setting, we provide a rigorous justification of the factorization method and demonstrate that it yields a binary criterion for distinguishing whether a sampling point lies inside or outside the scatterer, using only the spectral data of the far--field operator. In addition, we numerically analyze the Born approximation for weak scatterers in this biharmonic scattering context and compute the relative error against exact far--field data for sample weak scatterers, thereby quantifying its validity as a limited but useful approximation.

Analysis of the transmission eigenvalue problem for biharmonic scattering considering penetrable scatterers

In this paper, we provide an analytical study of the transmission eigenvalue problem in the context of biharmonic scattering with a penetrable obstacle. We will assume that the underlying physical model is given by an infinite elastic two--dimensional Kirchhoff--Love plate in $\mathbb{R}^2$, where the plate's thickness is small relative to the wavelength of the incident wave. In previous studies, transmission eigenvalues have been studied for acoustic scattering, whereas in this case, we consider biharmonic scattering. We prove the existence and discreteness of the transmission eigenvalues as well as study the dependence on the refractive index. We are able to prove the monotonicity of the first transmission eigenvalue with respect to the refractive index. Lastly, we provide numerical experiments to validate the theoretical work.

Inverse parameter and shape problem for an isotropic scatterer with two conductivity coefficients

In this paper, we consider the direct and inverse problem for isotropic scatterers with two conductive boundary conditions. First, we show the uniqueness for recovering the coefficients from the known far-field data at a fixed incident direction for multiple frequencies. Then, we address the inverse shape problem for recovering the scatterer for the measured far-field data at a fixed frequency. Furthermore, we examine the direct sampling method for recovering the scatterer by studying the factorization for the far-field operator. The direct sampling method is stable with respect to noisy data and valid in two dimensions for partial aperture data. The theoretical results are verified with numerical examples to analyze the performance by the direct sampling method.

Reconstruction of small and extended scatterers with a conductive boundary using far-field data

In this paper, we consider the inverse shape problem of recovering small and extended isotropic scatterers with a conductive boundary condition. Here, we assume that the measured far-field data is known at a fixed wave number. We will provide qualitative reconstruction methods for recovering either small or extended scatterers. For the case of small scatterers, we model this by a region(possibly with multiple components) with small volume. We derive an asymptotic expansion for the far-field pattern which will allow us to study the MUSIC algorithm for solving the problem. In the case of an extended scatterer, we derive a new factorization of the far-field operator. This is then used to provide the resolution analysis for a direct sampling method. The theoretical results are verified with some numerical experiments in 2--dimensions.

Direct sampling method via Landweber iteration for an absorbing scatterer with a conductive boundary

In this paper, we consider the inverse shape problem of recovering isotropic scatterers with a conductive boundary condition. Here, we assume that the measured far-field data is known at a fixed wave number. Motivated by recent work, we study a new direct sampling indicator based on the Landweber iteration and the factorization method. Therefore, we prove the connection between these reconstruction methods. The method studied here falls under the category of qualitative reconstruction methods where an imaging function is used to recover the absorbing scatterer. We prove stability of our new imaging function as well as derive a discrepancy principle for recovering the regularization parameter. The theoretical results are verified with numerical examples to show how the reconstruction performs by the new Landweber direct sampling method.

Analysis of the transmission eigenvalue problem with two conductivity parameters

In this paper, we provide an analytical study of the transmission eigenvalue problem with two conductivity parameters. We will assume that the underlying physical model is given by the scattering of a plane wave for an isotropic scatterer. In previous studies, this eigenvalue problem was analyzed with one conductive boundary parameter whereas we will consider the case of two parameters. We will prove the existence and discreteness of the transmission eigenvalues as well as study the dependence on the physical parameters. We are able to prove monotonicity of the first transmission eigenvalue with respect to the parameters and consider the limiting procedure as the second boundary parameter vanishes. Lastly, we provide extensive numerical experiments to validate the theoretical work.
