Finite time singularity formation for a nonlocal Boussinesq system arising in cold-plasma dynamics

We study finite-time singularity formation for a nonlocal Boussinesq system arising in cold-plasma dynamics. We show that smooth, symmetric initial data with strictly positive total density and a sufficiently negative velocity slope at the origin lead to finite-time blow-up. More precisely, we give an explicit upper bound for the lifespan and show that the velocity gradient becomes unbounded.

A fluid-solid interaction problem in porous media

In this work, we derive asymptotic interface models for an elastic Muskat free boundary problem describing Darcy flow beneath an elastic membrane. In a weakly nonlinear regime of small interface steepness, we obtain nonlocal evolution equations that capture the free-boundary dynamics up to quadratic order. In the long-wave thin-film regime, we rewrite the kinematic condition in flux form, flatten the moving domain, and derive a lubrication-type equation. Moreover, we establish well-posedness for these models in suitable Wiener spaces.

Pseudo-differential noise and nonlocal singularity formation in the stochastic Córdoba--Córdoba--Fontelos equation

We study the stochastic Córdoba--Córdoba--Fontelos equation driven by multiplicative Stratonovich noise. The noise amplitude is allowed to be a pseudo-differential operator whose leading part is nearly skew-adjoint. This class contains classical transport noise and also permits genuinely nonlocal perturbations. We first develop a local-in-time theory for maximal classical solutions in Sobolev spaces, proving existence, uniqueness, and a blow-up criterion. We then consider the special case of Stratonovich transport. For sufficiently large initial nonlocal steepness at a global maximum, we prove finite-time blow-up with arbitrarily high prescribed probability and obtain an explicit upper bound on the lifespan. Finally, on the event that the nonlocal steepness at the transported maximum diverges, we establish a conditional Type-I upper bound. When the terminal Cesàro average of the normalised nonlocal energy converges, we further identify the exact leading-order blow-up rate in terms of its limiting value.

Remarks on some quasi-linear fourth order parabolic equations arising in mathematical physics

This note proves existence and uniqueness of strong solutions to a broad class of fourth-order quasi-linear parabolic equations in the class of Wiener spaces. It improves upon previous results in the literature, devoted to some special cases falling within the general framework developed here, in which uniqueness held true in a smaller class than the space where existence was proven. Gain of analyticity, as well as generalisations to higher-order equations and to propagation of higher regularities, are also discussed.

Derivation and well-posedness for asymptotic models of cold plasmas

In this paper we derive three new asymptotic models for an hyperbolic-hyperbolicelliptic system of PDEs describing the motion of a collision-free plasma in a magnetic field. The first of these models takes the form of a non-linear and non-local Boussinesq system (for the ionic density and velocity) while the second is a non-local wave equation (for the ionic density). Moreover, we derive a unidirectional asymptotic model of the later which is closely related to the well-known Fornberg-Whitham equation. We also provide the well-posedness of these asymptotic models in Sobolev spaces. To conclude, we demonstrate the existence of a class of initial data which exhibit wave breaking for the unidirectional model.

Asymptotic models for viscoelastic one-dimensional blood flow

We derive a unidirectional asymptotic model for one-dimensional blood flow in viscoelastic arteries. We prove local well-posedness of strong solutions in Sobolev spaces for general parameters and mean-zero periodic data. In the purely elastic BBM regime we further establish global existence and exponential decay for sufficiently small initial data. We also present a numerical study of the reduced model, including comparisons across different viscoelastic and amplitude regimes, and discuss the observed dynamics in connection with the continuation criterion.

Weakly nonlinear models for hydroelastic water waves

In this work, we derive reduced interface models for hydroelastic water waves coupled to a nonlinear viscoelastic plate. In a weakly nonlinear small-steepness regime we obtain bidirectional nonlocal evolution equations capturing the interface dynamics up to quadratic order, and we also derive two unidirectional models describing one-way propagation while retaining the leading dispersive and dissipative effects induced by the plate. Remarkably, one of the bidirectional model has a doubly nonlinear structure in the sense that there there is a nonlinear elliptic operator acting on the acceleration of the interface. We prove local well-posedness for the bidirectional model for small data via a two-parameter regularization and nested fixed points. For the unidirectional models, we obtain local well-posedness for arbitrary data and global well-posedness for small data.

A bifurcation theory approach to the nonlocal Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation

We study the nonlocal Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation on the one-dimensional torus, \[ u_t+u u_x=Λ^{r}u-\varepsilon Λ^{s}u,\qquad x\in\mathbb T, \] where $\varepsilon>0$, $s>1$, $r\in[-1,s)$. We first prove local and global well-posedness for initial data in $H^{3}(\mathbb T)$. We then investigate the steady-state problem and show that the trivial branch undergoes bifurcation at the critical values $\varepsilon_k=k^{\,r-s}$, $k\in\mathbb N$. Using the Crandall-Rabinowitz theorem we obtain smooth local curves of nontrivial equilibria emanating from each $(\varepsilon_k,0)$ and compute the bifurcation direction. To address the global continuation of these branches we derive global a priori bounds and apply a global alternative based on the Fitzpatrick-Pejsachowicz-Rabier degree for Fredholm maps of index zero. In particular, for the component bifurcating from the first critical point we prove that its $\varepsilon$-projection contains the interval $(2^{r-s},1)$, yielding the existence of nontrivial steady states for that parameter range. We complement the theory with numerical continuation results illustrating the bifurcation diagram and solution profiles.

Unstable Interface Dynamics for Gravity Stokes Flow

We investigate some unstable behavior of the interface given by two incompressible fluids of different densities evolving by the regular Stokes law with gravity force. In the unstable scenario, where the denser fluid lies above the lighter fluid, we prove infinite-in-time growth of the length or the curvature of the interface. We support these analytical results with numerical simulations that confirm the predicted growth phenomena. In the stable configuration, where the denser fluid lies below the lighter fluid, we show that certain initial configurations evolve into the unstable regime in finite time.

A new asymptotic model of multilayer tumor growth

In this paper we study the growth of a tumor colony of multilayer type and focus on how the tumor grows from a near flat (when compared to the length of the tumor as, for instance, in the case of a bone tumor in a femur) initial colony. In particular we derive and study a new weakly nonlinear asymptotic model of multilayer tumor growth. The model takes the form of a nonlinear and nonlocal high order system of PDEs. Finally, motivated by the possibility of a finite time collision of the interfaces, we study the well-posedness of this system.

Asymptotic models for the evolution of a circular biofilm

We study a class of lubrication-type equations modeling the spread of thin poroelastic biofilms at air/agar interfaces. Starting from a biofilm slab model, we perform a formal multi-scale asymptotic expansion to derive a reduced nonlinear evolution equation with time-dependent coefficients. First, we establish a local-in-time existence result as well as a continuation criteria. Moreover, under suitable assumptions on the radius of the biofilm, we show the existence of global in time solutions. We conclude with some numerical simulations illustrating the emergence of instabilities and potential singularities in finite time.

Analysis of a Cross-Nonlinear Porous-Medium System Modeling Pressure-Driven Cell Population Dynamics

In this work, we introduce a cross-diffusion model that couples population density and occupied area to investigate how internal pressure drives growth and motility. By blending nonlinear nonlocal interactions with porous-medium diffusion and an antidiffusive pressure term, the model captures the two-way feedback between local density fluctuations and tissue expansion or contraction. Building on Shraiman's area-growth paradigm, we enrich the framework with density-dependent spreading at the population boundary and a novel cross-diffusion term, yielding fully nonlinear transport in both equations. We prove local well-posedness for nonnegative solutions in Sobolev spaces and, under higher regularity, show both density and area remain nonnegative. Uniqueness follows when the initial density's square root lies in $H^2$, even if density vanishes on parts of the domain. We also exhibit initial data that induce finite-time blow-up, highlighting potential singularity formation. Finally, we establish that the density's spatial support remains invariant and characterize the co-evolution of occupied area and population density domains, offering new insights into pattern formation and mass transport in biological tissues.

A nonlocal equation describing tumor growth

Cancer is a very complex phenomenon that involves many different scales and situations. In this paper we consider a free boundary problem describing the evolution of a tumor colony and we derive a new asymptotic model for tumor growth. We focus on the case of a single phase tumor colony taking into account chemotactic effects in an early stage where there is no necrotic inner region. Thus, our model is valid for the case of multilayer avascular tumors with very little access to both nutrients and inhibitors or the case where the amount of nutrients and inhibitors is very similar to the amount consumed by the multilayer tumor cells. Our model takes the form of a single nonlocal and nonlinear partial differential equation. Besides deriving the model, we also prove a well-posedness result.

New functional inequalities with applications to the arctan-fast diffusion equation

In this paper, we prove a couple of new nonlinear functional inequalities of Sobolev type akin to the logarithmic Sobolev inequality. In particular, one of the inequalities reads $$ \int_{\mathbb{S}^1}\arctan\left(\frac{\partial_x u}{u}\right)\partial_xu \,dx\geq \arctan\left(\|u(t)\|_{\dot{W}^{1,1}(\mathbb{S}^1)}\right)\|u(t)\|_{\dot{W}^{1,1}(\mathbb{S}^1)}. $$ Then, these inequalities are used in the study of the nonlinear \emph{arctan}-fast diffusion equation $$ \partial_t u-\partial_x\arctan\left(\frac{\partial_x u}{u}\right)=0. $$ For this highly nonlinear PDE we establish a number of well-posedness results and qualitative properties.

On a Camassa-Holm type equation describing the dynamics of viscous fluid conduits

In this note we derive a new nonlocal and nonlinear dispersive equations capturing the main dynamics of a circular interface separating a light, viscous fluid rising buoyantly through a heavy, more viscous, miscible fluid at small Reynolds numbers. This equation that we termed the $g-$model shares some common structure with the Camassa-Holm equation but has additional nonlocal effects. For this new PDE we study the well-posedness together with the existence of periodic traveling waves. Furthermore, we also show some numerical simulations suggesting the finite time singularity formation.

On two systems of Burgers type arising in nonlinear wave interaction

In this note we study the well-posedness of two systems of Burgers type arising in nonlinear wave interactions. The first model describes the interaction of a Burger's bore with the classical Korteweg-de Vries equation while the second exemplify the interaction of weak sound waves and entropy waves with small amplitudes. For the former, we show the local existence and uniqueness of solutions in Sobolev spaces and Wiener-type spaces. For the latter, we provide an elementary proof of finite time singularity.

On the existence of traveling wave solutions for cold plasmas

The present paper is concerned with the existence of traveling wave solutions of the asymptotic model, derived by the authors in a previous work, to approximate the unidirectional evolution of a collision-free plasma in a magnetic field. First, using bifurcation theory, we can rigorously prove the existence of periodic traveling waves of small amplitude. Furthermore, our analysis also evidences the existence of different type of traveling waves. To this end, we present a second approach based on the analysis of the differential system satisfied by the traveling-wave profiles, the existence of equilibria, and the identification of associated homo-clinic and periodic orbits around them. The study makes use of linearization techniques and numerical computations to show the existence of different types of traveling-wave solutions, with monotone and non-monotone behaviour and different regularity, as well as periodic traveling waves.
