Well-posedness of a water wave model with viscous effects

Starting from the paper by Dias, Dyachenko and Zakharov (\emph{Physics Letters A, 2008}) on viscous water waves, we derive a model that describes water waves with viscosity moving in deep water with or without surface tension effects. This equation takes the form of a nonlocal fourth order wave equation and retains the main contributions to the dynamics of the free surface. Then, we prove the well-posedness in Sobolev spaces of such equation.

Global existence and exponential decay to equilibrium for DLSS-type equations

In this paper, we deal with two logarithmic fourth order differential equations: the extended one-dimensional DLSS equation and its multi-dimensional analog. We show the global existence of solution in critical spaces, its convergence to equilibrium and the gain of spatial analyticity for these two equations in a unified way.

On a thin film model with insoluble surfactant

This paper studies the existence and asymptotic behavior of global weak solutions for a thin film equation with insoluble surfactant under the influence of gravitational, capillary and van der Waals forces. We prove the existence of global weak solutions for \emph{medium sized} initial data in \emph{large function spaces}. Moreover, exponential decay towards the flat equilibrium state is established, where an estimate on the decay rate can be computed explicitly.

Models for damped water waves

In this paper we derive some new weakly nonlinear asymptotic models describing viscous waves in deep water with or without surface tension effects. These asymptotic models take into account several different dissipative effects and are obtained from the free boundary problems formulated in the works of Dias, Dyachenko and Zakharov (Physics Letters A, 2008), Jiang, Ting, Perlin and Schultz (Journal of Fluid Mechanics,1996) and Wu, Liu and Yue (Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 2006).

On an asymptotic model for free boundary Darcy flow in porous media

We provide a rigorous mathematical study of an asymptotic model describing Darcy flow with free boundary in a low amplitude/large wavelength approximation. In particular, we prove several well-posedness results in critical spaces. Furthermore, we also study how the solution decays towards the flat equilibrium.

Growth in the Muskat problem

We review some recent results on the Muskat problem modelling multiphase flow in porous media. Furthermore, we prove a new regularity criterion in terms of some norms of the initial data in critical spaces ($\dot{W}^{1,\infty}$ and $\dot{H}^{3/2}$).

Asymptotic models for free boundary flow in porous media

We provide rigorous asymptotic models for the free boundary Darcy and Forchheimer problem under the assumption of weak nonlinear interaction, in a regime in which the steepness parameter of the interface is considered to be very small. The models we derive capture the nonlinear interaction of the original free boundary Darcy and Forchheimer problem up to quadratic terms. Furthermore, we provide models that consider both the two-dimensional and three-dimensional cases, with and without bottom topography.

On a nonlocal differential equation describing roots of polynomials under differentiation

In this work we study the nonlocal transport equation derived recently by Steinerberger when studying how the distribution of roots of a polynomial behaves under iterated differentation of the function. In particular, we study the well-posedness of the equation, establish some qualitative properties of the solution and give conditions ensuring the global existence of both weak and strong solutions. Finally, we present a link between the equation obtained by Steinerberger and a one-dimensional model of the surface quasi-geostrophic equation used by Chae, Córdoba, Córdoba and Fontelos.

Global existence and decay to equilibrium for some crystal surface models

In this paper we study the large time behavior of the solutions to the following nonlinear fourth-order equations $$ \partial_t u=Δe^{-Δu}, $$ $$ \partial_t u=-u^2Δ^2(u^3). $$ These two PDE were proposed as models of the evolution of crystal surfaces by J. Krug, H.T. Dobbs, and S. Majaniemi (Z. Phys. B, 97, 281-291, 1995) and H. Al Hajj Shehadeh, R. V. Kohn, and J. Weare (Phys. D, 240, 1771-1784, 2011), respectively. In particular, we find explicitly computable conditions on the size of the initial data (measured in terms of the norm in a critical space) guaranteeing the global existence and exponential decay to equilibrium in the Wiener algebra and in Sobolev spaces.

Global existence of weak solutions to dissipative transport equations with nonlocal velocity

We consider 1D dissipative transport equations with nonlocal velocity field: \[ θ_t+uθ_x+δu_{x} θ+Λ^γθ=0, \quad u=\mathcal{N}(θ), \] where $\mathcal{N}$ is a nonlocal operator given by a Fourier multiplier. Especially we consider two types of nonlocal operators: $\mathcal{N}=\mathcal{H}$, the Hilbert transform, $\mathcal{N}=(1-\partial_{xx} )^{-α}$. In this paper, we show several global existence of weak solutions depending on the range of $γ$ and $δ$. When $0<γ<1$, we take initial data having finite energy, while we take initial data in weighted function spaces (in the real variables or in the Fourier variables), which have infinite energy, when $γ\in (0,2)$.

On the thin film Muskat and the thin film Stokes equations

The present paper is concerned with the analysis of two strongly coupled systems of degenerate parabolic partial differential equations arising in multiphase thin film flows. In particular, we consider the two-phase thin film Muskat problem and the two-phase thin film approximation of the Stokes flow under the influence of both, capillary and gravitational forces. The existence of global weak solutions for medium size initial data in large function spaces is proved. Moreover, exponential decay results towards the equilibrium state are established, where the decay rate can be estimated by explicit constants depending on the physical parameters of the system. Eventually, it is shown that if the initial datum satisfies additional (low order) Sobolev regularity, we can propagate Sobolev regularity for the corresponding solution. The proofs are based on a priori energy estimates in Wiener and Sobolev spaces.

Boundedness and homogeneous asymptotics for a fractional logistic Keller-Segel equations

In this paper we consider a $d$-dimensional ($d=1,2$) parabolic-elliptic Keller-Segel equation with a logistic forcing and a fractional diffusion of order $α\in (0,2)$. We prove uniform in time boundedness of its solution in the supercritical range $α>d\left(1-c\right)$, where $c$ is an explicit constant depending on parameters of our problem. Furthermore, we establish sufficient conditions for $\|u(t)-u_\infty\|_{L^\infty}\rightarrow0$, where $u_\infty\equiv 1$ is the only nontrivial homogeneous solution. Finally, we provide a uniqueness result.

Critical Keller-Segel meets Burgers on ${\mathbb S}^1$: large-time smooth solutions

We show that solutions to the parabolic-elliptic Keller-Segel system on ${\mathbb S}^1$ with critical fractional diffusion $(-Δ)^\frac{1}{2}$ remain smooth for any initial data and any positive time. This disproves, at least in the periodic setting, the large-data-blowup conjecture by Bournaveas and Calvez. As a tool, we show smoothness of solutions to a modified critical Burgers equation via a generalization of the method of moduli of continuity by Kiselev, Nazarov and Shterenberg. over a setting where the considered equation has no scaling. This auxiliary result may be interesting by itself. Finally, we study the asymptotic behavior of global solutions, improving the existing results.

Well-posedness and decay to equilibrium for the Muskat problem with discontinuous permeability

We first prove local-in-time well-posedness for the Muskat problem, modeling fluid flow in a two-dimensional inhomogeneous porous media. The permeability of the porous medium is described by a step function, with a jump discontinuity across the fixed-in-time curve $(x_1,-1+f(x_1))$, while the interface separating the fluid from the vacuum region is given by the time-dependent curve $(x_1,h(x_1,t))$. Our estimates are based on a new methodology that relies upon a careful study of the PDE system, coupling Darcy's law and incompressibility of the fluid, rather than the analysis of the singular integral contour equation for the interface function $h$. We are able to develop an existence theory for any initial interface given by $h_0 \in H^2$ and any permeability curve-of-discontinuity that is given by $f \in H^{2.5}$. In particular, our method allows for both curves to have (pointwise) unbounded curvature. In the case that the permeability discontinuity is the set $f=0$, we prove global existence and decay to equilibrium for small initial data. This decay is obtained using a new energy-energy dissipation inequality that couples tangential derivatives of the velocity in the bulk of the fluid with the curvature of the interface. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first global existence result for the Muskat problem with discontinuous permeability.

Suppression of blow up by a logistic source in $2$D Keller-Segel system with fractional dissipation

We consider a two dimensional parabolic-elliptic Keller-Segel equation with a logistic forcing and a fractional diffusion of order $α$. We obtain existence of global in time regular solution for arbitrary initial data with no size restrictions and $c<α\leq 2$, where $c \in (0,2)$ depends on the equation's parameters. For an even wider range of $α's$, we prove existence of global in time weak solution for general initial data.
