Conformal Metrics on the Disk with Prescribed Negative Gaussian Curvature and Boundary Geodesic Curvature

We study the problem of prescribing the Gaussian curvature on the disk and the geodesic curvature on its boundary via a conformal change of the metric. In this paper the case of negative Gaussian curvature is treated, a regime for which the bubbling behavior of approximate solutions is not so well understood. This is due to the possible appearance of blow-up solutions with diverging length and area. We give an existence result under assumptions on the curvatures which are somewhat natural, in view of some obstructions inherent to the problem. Our strategy is variational and relies on the study of certain families of approximated problems. By performing a refined blow-up analysis for solutions with bounded Morse index, we conclude compactness.

Prescribing curvatures in the disk via conformal changes of the metric: the case of negative Gaussian curvature

This paper deals with the question of prescribing the Gaussian curvature on a disk and the geodesic curvature of its boundary by means of a conformal deformation of the metric. We restrict ourselves to a symmetric setting in which the Gaussian curvature is negative, and we are able to give general existence results. Our approach is variational, and solutions will be searched as critical points of an associated functional. The proofs use a perturbation argument via the monotonicity trick of Struwe, together with a blow-up analysis and Morse index estimates. We also give a nonexistence result that shows that, to some extent, the assumptions required for existence are necessary.

A mean field problem approach for the double curvature prescription problem

In this paper we establish a new mean field-type formulation to study the problem of prescribing Gaussian and geodesic curvatures on compact surfaces with boundary, which is equivalent to the following Liouville-type PDE with nonlinear Neumann conditions: $$\left\{\begin{array}{ll} -Δu+2K_g=2Ke^u&\text{in }Σ\\ \partial_νu+2h_g=2he^\frac u2&\text{on }\partialΣ. \end{array}\right.$$ We provide three different existence results in the cases of positive, zero and negative Euler characteristics by means of variational techniques.

Existence of solutions for a system with general Hardy--Sobolev singular criticalities

In this paper we study a class of Hardy--Sobolev type systems defined in $\mathbb{R}^N$ and coupled by a singular critical Hardy--Sobolev term. The main novelty of this work is that the orders of the singularities are independent and contained in a wide range. By means of variational techniques, we will prove the existence of positive bound and ground states for such a system. In particular, we find solutions as minimizers or Mountain--Pass critical points of the energy functional on the underlying Nehari manifold.

Nonlinear elliptic systems involving Hardy-Sobolev Criticalities

This paper is focused on the solvability of a family of nonlinear elliptic systems defined in $\mathbb{R}^N$. Such equations contain Hardy potentials and Hardy-Sobolev criticalities coupled by a possible critical Hardy-Sobolev term. That problem arises as a generalization of Gross-Pitaevskii and Bose-Einstein type systems. By means of variational techniques, we shall find ground and bound states in terms of the coupling parameter $ν$ and the order of the different parameters and exponents. In particular, for a wide range of parameters we find solutions as minimizers or Mountain-Pass critical points of the energy functional on the underlying Nehari manifold.

Classification of solutions to Hardy-Sobolev Doubly Critical Systems

This work deals with a family of Hardy-Sobolev doubly critical system defined in $\mathbb{R}^n$. More precisely, we provide a classification of the positive solutions, whose expressions comprise multiplies of solutions of the decoupled scalar equation. Our strategy is based on the symmetry of the solutions, deduced via a suitable version of the moving planes technique for cooperative singular systems, joint with the study of the asymptotic behavior by using the Moser's iteration scheme.

Symmetry and monotonicity results for solutions of vectorial $p$-Stokes systems

In this paper we shall study qualitative properties of a $p$-Stokes type system, namely $$ -{\boldsymbol Δ}_p{\boldsymbol u}=-\operatorname{\bf div}(|D{\boldsymbol u}|^{p-2}D{\boldsymbol u}) = {\boldsymbol f}(x,{\boldsymbol u})\,\, \mbox{ in $Ω$},$$ where ${\boldsymbol Δ}_p$ is the $p$-Laplacian vectorial operator. More precisely, under suitable assumptions on the domain $Ω$ and the function $\boldsymbol{ f}$, it is deduced that system solutions are symmetric and monotone. Our main results are derived from a vectorial version of the weak and strong comparison principles, which enable to proceed with the moving-planes technique for systems. As far as we know, these are the first qualitative kind results involving vectorial operators.

A Strong Maximum Principle for the fractional Laplace equation with mixed boundary condition

In this work we prove a strong maximum principle for fractional elliptic problems with mixed Dirichlet-Neumann boundary data which extends the one proved by J. Dávila to the fractional setting. In particular, we present a comparison result for two solutions of the fractional Laplace equation involving the spectral fractional Laplacian endowed with homogeneous mixed boundary condition. This result represents a non-local counterpart to a Hopf's Lemma for fractional elliptic problems with mixed boundary data.

Bound and ground states of coupled "NLS-KDV" equations with Hardy potential and critical power

We consider the existence of bound and ground states for a family of nonlinear elliptic systems in $\mathbb{R}^N$, which involves equations with critical power nonlinearities and Hardy-type singular potentials. The equations are coupled by what we call ``Schrödinger-Korteweg-de Vries'' non-symmetric terms, which arise in some phenomena of fluid mechanics. By means of variational methods, ground states are derived for several ranges of the positive coupling parameter $ν$. Moreover, by using min-max arguments, we seek bound states under some energy assumptions.

Existence of bound and ground states for an elliptic system with double criticality

We study the existence of bound and ground states for a class of nonlinear elliptic systems in $\mathbb{R}^N$. These equations involve critical power nonlinearities and Hardy-type singular potentials, coupled by a term containing up to critical powers. More precisely, we find ground states either the positive coupling parameter $ν$ is large or $ν$ is small under suitable assumptions on the other parameters of the problem. Furthermore, bound states are found as Mountain-Pass-type critical points of the underlying functional constrained on the Nehari manifold. Our variational approach improves some known results and allows us to cover range of parameters which have not been considered previously.

Blow-up analysis of conformal metrics of the disk with prescribed Gaussian and geodesic curvatures

This paper is concerned with the compactness of metrics of the disk with prescribed Gaussian and geodesic curvatures. We consider a blowing-up sequence of metrics and give a precise description of its asymptotic behavior. In particular, the metrics blow-up at a unique point on the boundary and we are able to give necessary conditions on its location. It turns out that such conditions depend locally on the Gaussian curvatures but they depend on the geodesic curvatures in a nonlocal way. This is a novelty with respect to the classical Nirenberg problem where the blow-up conditions are local, and this new aspect is driven by the boundary condition.

A double mean field equation related to a curvature prescription problem

We study a double mean field-type PDE related to a prescribed curvature problem on compacts surfaces with boundary. We provide a general blow-up analysis, then a Moser-Trudinger inequality, which gives energy-minimizing solutions for some range of parameters. Finally, we provide existence of min-max solutions for a wider range of parameters, which is dense in the plane if $§$ is not simply connected.

Conformal metrics with prescribed Gaussian and geodesic curvatures

We consider the problem of prescribing the Gaussian and the geodesic curvatures of a compact surface with boundary by a conformal deformation of the metric. We derive some existence results using a variational approach, either by minimization of the Euler-Lagrange energy or via min-max methods. One of the main tools in our approach is a blow-up analysis of solutions, which in the present setting can have diverging volume. To our knowledge, this is the first time in which such an aspect is treated. Key ingredients in our arguments are: a blow-up analysis around a sequence of points different from local maxima; the use of holomorphic domain-variations; and Morse-index estimates.

Compactness, existence and multiplicity for the singular mean field problem with sign-changing potentials

In this paper we consider a mean field problem on a compact surface with conical singularities. This problem appears in the Gaussian curvature prescription problem in Geometry, and also in the Electroweak Theory and in the abelian Chern-Simons-Higgs model in Physics. In this paper we focus on the case of sign-changing potentials, and we give results on compactness, existence and multiplicity of solutions.

Existence and non existence results for the singular Nirenberg problem

In this paper we study the problem, posed by Troyanov, of prescribing the Gaussian curvature under a conformal change of the metric on surfaces with conical singularities. Such geometrical problem can be reduced to the solvability of a nonlinear PDE with exponential type non-linearity admitting a variational structure. In particular, we are concerned with the case where the prescribed function $K$ changes sign. When the surface is the standard sphere, namely for the singular Nirenberg problem, by a min-max approach and a new compactness argument we give sufficient conditions on $K$, concerning mainly the regularity of its nodal line and the topology of its positive nodal region, to be the Gaussian curvature of a conformal metric with assigned conical singularities. Besides, we find a class of functions on $\mathbb{S}^2$ which do not verify our conditions and which can not be realized as the Gaussian curvature of any conformal metric with one conical singularity. This shows that our result is somehow sharp.

Prescribing the Gaussian curvature in a subdomain of S^2 with Neumann boundary condition

In this paper we study the problem of prescribing the Gaussian curvature under a conformal change of the metric. We are concerned with the problem posed on a subdomain of the 2-sphere under Neumann boundary conditions of the conformal factor. If the area of the subdomain is greater than 2π, the associated energy functional is no longer bounded from below. We treat this case by using min-max techniques, giving a new existence result that generalizes and unifies previous work on the argument.
