Linear Weingarten surfaces in Euclidean and hyperbolic space

In this paper we review some author's results about Weingarten surfaces in Euclidean space $\r^3$ and hyperbolic space $\h^3$. We stress here in the search of examples of linear Weingarten surfaces that satisfy a certain geometric property. First, we consider Weingarten surfaces in $\r^3$ that are foliated by circles, proving that the surface is rotational, a Riemann example or a generalized cone. Next we classify rotational surfaces in $\r^3$ of hyperbolic type showing that there exist surfaces that are complete. Finally, we study linear Weingarten surfaces in $\h^3$ that are invariant by a group of parabolic isometries, obtaining its classification.

Minimal translation surfaces in hyperbolic space

In the half-space model of hyperbolic space, that is, $\r^3_{+}=\{(x,y,z)\in\r^3;z>0\}$ with the hyperbolic metric, a translation surface is a surface that writes as $z=f(x)+g(y)$ or $y=f(x)+g(z)$, where $f$ and $g$ are smooth functions. We prove that the only minimal translation surfaces (zero mean curvature in all points) are totally geodesic planes.

Slant helices in Euclidean 4-space $E^4$

We consider a unit speed curve $α$ in Euclidean four-dimensional space $E^4$ and denote the Frenet frame by $\{T,N,B_1,B_2\}$. We say that $α$ is a slant helix if its principal normal vector $N$ makes a constant angle with a fixed direction $U$. In this work we give different characterizations of such curves in terms of their curvatures.

Some Characterizations of Cylindrical Helices in $E^n$

We consider a unit speed curve $α$ in Euclidean $n$-dimensional space $E^n$ and denote the Frenet frame by $\{v_1,...,v_n\}$. We say that $α$ is a cylindrical helix if its tangent vector $v_1$ makes a constant angle with a fixed direction $U$. In this work we give different characterizations of such curves in terms of their curvatures.

Timelike $B_2$-slant helices in Minkowski space $E_1^4$

We consider a unit speed timelike curve $α$ in Minkowski 4-space $E_1^4$ and denote the Frenet frame of $α$ by $\{T,N,B_1,B_2\}$. We say that $α$ is a generalized helix if one of the unit vector fields of the Frenet frame has constant scalar product with a fixed direction $U$ of $E_1^4$. In this work we study those helices where the function $ $ is constant and we give different characterizations of such curves.

On slant helices in Minkowski space $E_1^3$

We consider a curve $α=α(s)$ in Minkowski 3-space $E_1^3$ and denote by $\{T,N,B}$ the Frenet frame of $α$. We say that $α$ is a slant helix if there exists a fixed direction $U$ of $E_1^3$ such that the function $ $ is constant. In this work we give characterizations of slant helices in terms of the curvature and torsion of $α$.

A criterion on instability of rotating cylindrical surfaces

We consider a column of a rotating stationary surface in Euclidean space. We obtain a value $l_0>0$ in such way that if the length $l$ of column satisfies $l>l_0$, then the surface is instable. This extends, in some sense, previous results due to Plateau and Rayleigh for columns of surfaces with constant mean curvature.

A comparison result for radial solutions of the mean curvature equation

We establish two comparison results between the solutions of a class of mean curvature equations and pieces of arcs of circles that satisfy the same Neumann boundary condition. Finally we present a number of examples where our estimates can be applied, some of them have a physical motivation.

Stationary rotating surfaces in Euclidean space

A stationary rotating surface is a compact surface in Euclidean space whose mean curvature $H$ at each point $x$ satisfies $2H(x)=a r^2+b$, where $r$ is the distance from $x$ to a fixed straight-line $L$, and $a$ and $b$ are constants. These surfaces are solutions of a variational problem that describes the shape of a drop of incompressible fluid in equilibrium by the action of surface tension when it rotates about $L$ with constant angular velocity. The effect of gravity is neglected. In this paper we study the geometric configurations of such surfaces, focusing the relationship between the geometry of the surface and the one of its boundary. As special cases, we will consider two families of such surfaces: axisymmetric surfaces and embedded surfaces with planar boundary.

Parabolic Weingarten surfaces in hyperbolic space

A surface in hyperbolic space $\h^3$ invariant by a group of parabolic isometries is called a parabolic surface. In this paper we investigate parabolic surfaces of $\h^3$ that satisfy a linear Weingarten relation of the form $aκ_1+bκ_2=c$ or $aH+bK=c$, where $a,b,c\in \r$ and, as usual, $κ_i$ are the principal curvatures, $H$ is the mean curvature and $K$ is de Gaussian curvature. We classify all parabolic linear Weingarten surfaces in hyperbolic space.

Parabolic surfaces in hyperbolic space with constant curvature

We study parabolic linear Weingarten surfaces in hyperbolic space $\rlopezh^3$. In particular, we classify two family of parabolic surfaces: surfaces with constant Gaussian curvature and surfaces that satisfy the relation $aκ_1+bκ_2=c$, where $κ_i$ are the principal curvatures, and $a,b$ and $c$ are constant.

Stationary bands in three-dimensional Minkowski space

In this paper we consider a free boundary problem in the 3-dimensional Lorentz-Minkowski space $ł^3$ which deals spacelike surfaces whose mean curvature is a linear function of the time coordinate and the boundary moves in a given support plane. We study spacelike surfaces that project one-to-one into a strip of the support and that locally are critical points of a certain energy functional involving the area of the surface, a timelike potential and preserves the volume enclosed by the surface. We call these surfaces stationary bands. We establish existence of such surfaces and we investigate their qualitative properties. Finally, we give estimates of its size in terms of the initial data.

On linear Weingarten surfaces

In this paper we study surfaces in Euclidean 3-space that satisfy a Weingarten condition of linear type as $κ_1=m κ_2 +n$, where $m$ and $n$ are real numbers and $κ_1$ and $κ_2$ denote the principal curvatures at each point of the surface. We investigate the possible existence of such surfaces parametrized by a uniparametric family of circles. Besides the surfaces of revolution, we prove that not exist more except the case $(m,n)=(-1,0)$, that is, if the surface is one of the classical examples of minimal surfaces discovered by Riemann.

Special Weingarten surfaces foliated by circles

In this paper we study surfaces in Euclidean 3-space foliated by pieces of circles and that satisfy a Weingarten condition of type $a H+b K=c$, where $a,b$ and $c$ are constant and $H$ and $K$ denote the mean curvature and the Gauss curvature respectively. We prove that a such surface must be a surface of revolution, a Riemann minimal surface or a generalized cone.

Capillary channels in a gravitational field

The liquid shape between two vertical parallel plates in a gravity field due to capillary forces is studied. When the physical system achieves its mechanical equilibrium, the capillary surface has mean curvature proportional to its height above a horizontal reference plane and it meets the vertical walls in a prescribed angle. We examine the shapes of these interfaces and their qualitative properties depending on the sign of the capillary constant. We focus to obtain estimates of the size of the meniscus, as for example, its height and volume.
